PHASE I [ day one ] Bright and early - very early - on April 1st, everyone will receive texts to their CereVices from one Yu Narukami that reads: Today’s the day, everyone. Let’s all plan to meet by Ardeo’s shrine as soon as possible. We’ll head over the wall from there and set out.
Regardless of when you arrive, Yu (and Yosuke) will be there, ready to greet you and hand out the supplies that Yu has been collecting for the past several days. Now is the time to mingle and get familiar with the other members of the expedition provided you don’t already know them. This is the last bit of calm you’ll get before a motley crew of fliers helps to lift you off the ground and take you over the wall: a dragon, a robot, and whatever these two are. Buckle up.
The jungle, once you arrive on the other side of the wall, is as humid and uncomfortable as ever, though you’ve all come a little more prepared this time. Your CereVices continue to fail to function (and, for some reason, they still play that song when you try to access the internet. Seriously, why did you even bother…?), and monsters of all kinds still lurk the trees amongst all the strange bugs and odd flowers from before. Better be on your guard; you might think you know what the jungle has in store for you, but you’d be wrong.
PHASE II [ day two ] By the second day of travel, this band of explorers has made it a fair way into the jungle, especially with a number of fliers between them to speed things along a little. The air is starting to get a little uncomfortable to breathe, but that’s no big deal, right? You can press through that.
What’s not as easy to simply press through is the strange things you’re starting to see in the trees. Is that … is that your sister? Your brother? Your father, your mother? Are they injured, are they bleeding? Either way, you seem to be seeing your family, and they seem to be terribly hurt. This may be a familiar effect to certain characters. That’s not all; the trees are moving, too, and if characters aren’t careful, they’ll get dragged down along with them. Stay still amongst these patches of trees, and you’ll turn into one yourself. Better keep moving and not dwell too long on what isn’t really there.
If you need some encouragement to keep moving, perhaps the sudden and untimely arrival of this friendly fellow burst forth from the moving trees which had unfortunately camouflaged it will convince you to run.
PHASE III [ day three ] Pressing on despite growing dangers, hallucinations, worsening conditions, and ever-more urgent fears of suffocation will be rewarded. Provided characters have figured out their way around the three day breathing limit (and you have figured it out by now, haven’t you?), they’ll finally see their first sign of the planet’s natives - the first glimpse of actual people that anyone has managed to catch. And it seems these people are willing to talk, especially once they catch sight of Hiccup and Toothless. They make it extremely clear they want everyone well away from their village, though. How, you ask? Well, that spike-lined pit you just fell into (hopefully you caught yourself on the edge!) might have made it clear. The pack of monsters they just sent your way might also be another hint. Survive all their traps and deterrents and make it clear that all you want to do is talk, and not approach the village proper, and they’ll become … well, less hostile, at least. Take the time to speak with them and decipher what little they learn of the language of Cerealia, and you might learn a few interesting things.
Taking the third day to gather information and simply rest might be for the best. You’ve all been pushing hard, and who’s to say what else awaits out there? Yu calls for a night of rest, and no one will go anywhere else on day three.
PHASE IV [ day four ] Hopefully you took that time to recover. Because on day four, you’ll find yourself saddled with a whole new world of trouble. A new friend will show up to spoil your plans whatever they may be, and he’s even less friendly than the last guy.
With two major monster attacks and a dozen minor ones, plus traps, bugs, hallucinations, and the very real threat of suffocation to contend with, with members of the group injured and supplies and healing spells dwindling, Yu will make another decision as leader of the group: we’re going home. The risk of staying out here has just become too great.
PHASE V [ day five ] Did you think it would be that easy?
The trek home is hard, even with fliers scattered between the group to speed everyone back the way you all came as quickly as possible. All the injuries still mean everyone has to touch ground in order to rest occasionally. And no matter how vigilant you are, no matter how careful, the best laid plans can still go awry…
[ Or they can be ripped entirely asunder. ]
When the battered, broken group finally reaches the walls late on the 5th day of April, their number will be two less than what they started with, and they will risk losing three more unless they get medical help immediately.
Such are the dangers of testing the jungles of Tellus.
BONUS [ day ??? ] Everyone’s least favorite bugs are still hanging around the jungle. Well, it’s not like they’d go away after just a few days of you all being gone, would they? Get bit, and you’ll find yourself hugging the nearest unlucky sap. Or maybe you’re just suffering some uncomfortable, sudden swelling. Yikes.
It’s funny, though. Is it just you, or is it just a little bit easier to breathe now that this totally random person with no particular elemental affiliation has been hugging you for a while? Huh. Must just be your imagination.

[ the jungle adventure they all had previously was probably a tad bit worse for tadashi hamada, but what he wants is to learn more. learn more about the fire, if possible, which is why prior to leaving for the jungle, he makes his way to another intrepid explorer to ask: ]
Hey, Tadashi Hamada. [ he'll offer his gloved hand to anybody whom he hasn't met yet, but if he knows the person, he'll just greet them with a hey. his st. bernard cybuddy barks a hello, as well. ]
Quick question: do you know who or what might have started the fire in the jungle a couple of days back?
[ even if they weren't there as witnesses to the fire, they could have at least heard the explosions. he seems to think that everyone's aware of what had happened that day.
now, upon arriving at the jungle, he immediately checks his cerevice for service, and is told to paint the colours of the wind… it's not cool at all, and he looks absolutely discontent. ]
Unbelievable.
[ hey, someone's got to be THAT person who'd make the song play again, right? ]
PHASE II:
[ being around the trees really is a familiar expereince for tadashi, especially when he thought he had seen his younger brother during the time he was with occidi. it was a painful experience trying to hug somebody and find out that they aren't real.
but what he sees now, however, are both his parents who have passed away years ago, looking so hurt and distraught. and this obviously leaves tadashi in a panicked and frozen state. ]
Mom? Dad?
[ well, the frozen state did not last for long as he tries to reach out after his parents. it might be best to snap him out of this hallucination before things get a little bit dangerous. ]
PHASE III:
[ the information is good, and tadashi commits it to memory, as well as typing it on his cerevice as if making a report to himself. what they've learned is clearly important, though he has nothing to use against CERES, yet. . . it's good information to share with katsura, when they all get back, though.
and tadashi hopes this time around that he makes it in one piece. he doesn't fear death per se, but he'd honestly rather not have his brother witness his brother dying three times in a row. seriously? what kind of sadistic god would have to have hiro hamada suffer in that manner? oh, right. this writer right here.
when yu commands the party to rest, tadashi decides to gather some wood for a bonfire and he rests on his cybuddy who isn't only soft and fluffy, but is aso tough and makes for a good backrest. it's a pretty comfy resting spot, if anybody wants to join him. ]
PHASE IV:
[ tadashi's courage seems to have taken the better of him when he jumps and tackles somebody out of their new friend's way. ]
Get ready, we're fighting this thing.
[ he immediately gets up, rubbing the back of his neck instinctively as he sends out an electro-magnetic ball that shocks the monster. it probably takes out 20% of its HP in video game terms.

Tadashi, move! [Because there's suddenly the sound of a rocket firing up and Baymax's fist soaring through the air toward the monster, followed by some mechanical clicking as Hiro follows it.
There's a sword. There's a fourteen year old boy with a mechanical, unpolished-looking sword that can split into three pieces with a hilt containing a round of bullets. Said-boy is also moving to collide into Tadashi and he swings the blade, breaking it down into three small daggers to also hit the monster.
Not his smartest move, no, but it'll get them out of the way until they could get back-up.]

This misplaced sense of duty is what's making Link stare over at Tadashi and his robot now. After a day of traveling and dealing with the natives, his wound is throbbing and aching. He can't decide whether he should ask for help or just endure it and not be a bother. They already treated it the day before, so the pain is probably just from being too active today, right?
Still, damn. It hurts. Internally he waffles back and forth on whether to ask for more help or not. Even as he's walking over he still can't decide.]

[Minato's not one for showy appearances and he makes as little of a scene as possible by arriving on time and greeting Yu and Yosuke first since he knows the both of them, but it does occur to him that he's going to have to get a certain detail settled for the benefit of everyone else who doesn't know him. As such, he'll be standing out in the open with a hand tucked into his pocket, looking back curiously at the other people on this trip.]
Good morning. I'm Minato Arisato, it's nice to meet you. [That would be that for most introductions after he offers said hand that was tucked in his pocket earlier, but he's still staring.] There's something you should know before we leave...do you know what a Persona is? [He's aware that most of them don't, but easing people gently into the knowledge of how his Evoker works beats "I summon mythological figures that can heal your injuries by metaphorically committing suicide" any time of the day- they really didn't need anyone panicking because he forgot to mention it.]
Phase III:
[It doesn't take a cultural anthropologist to conclude after a few barely-dodged traps that the natives no one had expected to find didn't want anyone coming near to their residence, and Minato can't blame them for their suspicion after one of their previous settlements went up in smoke, accident or not.
There's no doubt in his mind that even what little they've managed to make out will be useful, and he's thankful for it as conversing with the natives had been quite a challenge even with his high Academics aiding him in conversing with the natives- it helps of course that he's extremely mild-mannered and polite, the very picture of non-aggressiveness.
Night time brings about a more concerning problem: Even after chancing on a solution to their suffocation problems it's still getting risky to stay in the jungle. There's no telling what can happen when they're cut off from communication, and all they had was each other- with that thought Minato settles down by a regular tree to think about what they've learned, and to ask the person closest to him a question.] The sun's setting...what do you think about the natives? [And what they've learned, but that goes without saying.]

Nevertheless, Link isn't a complainer. This is the first time he's ever had so many people around while on the job, and he definitely doesn't want to make himself out to be a liability who needs to be babied. Besides, he needed to help with dealing with those natives! They were a pretty mild bunch - they just didn't want to be bothered.
Link turns his head to glance at Minato's question, the low light from the moon and their fire basking his face in faint orange.]
Wish they could have told us a little more than they did, but... I think we should be thankful they didn't try to kill us. [chuckle.]

[ Yosuke's scratching at his arm as he talks, like that's gonna somehow stop him from feeling gross all over. (Stupid jungle - he doesn't even like camping, let alone this, ew.) But he eventually cuts it out, looks up at Minato with a shrug of his shoulders. ]

[ a dry joke said from hiccup's current position of "leaning on his dragon", as he adjusts some of the straps on his flightsuit. the various... everythings they set out for them were unexpected, in a way, but not entirely questionable considering the natives' previous experiences.
not to mention they seemed to react pretty positively to him and toothless together, too--that's a plus, though that's the complete reason for his understanding. ]

[He's antsy, as usual. He's bouncing on the balls of his feet when they show up at the wall, ready to go and a little more than nervous even if he won't admit it. As the group gathers he's taking supplies from Yu and Yosuke and helping with the distribution, but more than that he's standing in front of his armored robot.]
He doesn't have a harness or anything so you've gotta have a tight grip. Think you can handle that?
[Flying's easy. If you choose to speak with him once you're all inside the jungle you'll find that Hiro's actively taking pictures of the bugs and flowers with his fully-charged CereVice while also continually patting his side for something tucked away in his belt and adjusting the symmetrical square backpack he's carrying. Hmm…what do you have, tiny Hamada?]
[Phase 2]
[They've made progress and he's writing it out in his head to report to certain winter spirits and rendezvous with certain dragon trainers later. Breathing doesn't seem to bother him so much (he's been having a tiny bit of trouble in the colony, so this seems to be almost like an improvement) but that's not his focus.
His focus is the fact that he seems to be seeing something nobody else is. Tadashi had been a nightmare far too real and he knows, he knows his brother's safe now. Instead, he's pausing in his steps and staring before he's diving with a quick yell of "Aunt Cass!" before tumbling into the dirt, crawling forward toward what he thinks is the battered and bloody body of his main caretaker.
Someone may want to snap him out of it though since behind him, seeing how there's a robotic "Oh no" and Baymax becoming entangled in the trees. Please help. Please tell Hiro to pay attention.]
[Phase 3]
[This journey's a little less chaotic than their last even if Hiro's slightly battered himself and it's the information he's most curious about. It had taken some trial and error to get close enough to the natives and though they were initially very distrusting of Hiro and his mechanical best friend, he does his best to placate them.
The information he receives (after surviving the natives' attacks) is a lot and he commits it to memory. He settles down in the dark slightly away from the rest of the group and guarded by Baymax when Yu calls it a night and though it may look as though he's isolating himself it becomes clear what he's doing by the way his eyes flicker about now and then. He's standing guard and keeping watch, but he won't say no to company if anyone approaches him. In particular, he's keeping watch on one very specific person from his guard post.]
[Phase 4]
[Oh look. Monsters. With a new battery in Baymax, the robot's firing up his rocket fist to aim at their new friend and Hiro pulls out what looks like a small tube. Soon enough though that tube forms and stretches out, forming into a sword with a rotatable hilt. Upon close inspection one can see that the blade can break into three pieces, and even closer inspection one can see that the hilt actually contains a round of bullets. It's not pretty by any means, but it's a prototype. Now's the perfect time to really test out the thing he's kept in his belt. He'll turn to whoever's at his side before nodding and fixing his gaze on the monster again.]
Ready to bring this guy down?

[Fuck bugs. Fuckkkkk bugs so much. You'd think he'd learn not to take anything off but he needed a free hand to swap out Baymax's battery and a bug happens to bite the exposed skin.
And now Hiro's hand kinda looks like a small balloon.]

[After a solid day of traveling - and Link trying to keep his half-terrified questions to himself about dragons and marshmallow men and floating disco monsters - they've submerged themselves several miles deep into the woods. Link trudges nimbly over the roots and rocks, the terrain familiar by now. The air is starting to feel thick, almost as if a thunderstorm was coming in, except it's much too oppressive to be simple humidity. That's consistent with what happened last time they were here, so they should be careful, he thinks to himself.
A twig snaps under his boot as he hops down a large outcropping of tangled roots, but suddenly it sounds much louder and noticeable than it would have a second ago, among all the noise the group as a whole is making. Link looks up, only to see that Yu and Minato, who were leading the way, are gone. He can't hear their footsteps or conversation anymore. Halting and twisting around, he finds the rest of their party gone, too.
Well, this can't be good. He already had his shield in one hand, but now he draws his sword as well and frowns at the jungle around him, steeling himself. This could be some kind of trick... or his companions could have actually be stealthily snatched up. What he should probably do is wait first, see if anything would attack him, and --
"Link!"
A voice. A voice he hasn't heard in years, but unforgettable and unmistakable. Link freezes, his heart turning into a rock in his chest. It's literally impossible for him to be hearing this voice, and yet... when he turns around, there she is.
...Bleeding from her neck. Bleeding?!]
Saria...?!
[The girl turns and runs, with a pained expression. It's almost as stunning as seeing her in the first place; if she were hurt then she'd need help, and Saria would know to rely on Link. Link blinks and sputters --]
W-Wait! Sara, wait! It's me!
[-- before suddenly sprinting off in the opposite direction, stumbling on rocks in his rush.
Of course, his companions were all still there around him, trudging through the brush as normal. To them, Link will have done nothing more than suddenly call out to thin air and run off in a panic.]

Yosuke had looked over when he heard the sound of metal being drawn, but he didn't think too much about it, given there could be any number of reasons for Link to do such a thing - clear the path a bit better, raise his guard a bit, you know. But the next time he looks back in the kid's direction, he sees the shock in his expression just before he tears off into the jungle on his own, yelling. ]

[ He takes off after him, not wanting to take any chances. This jungle is serious business, and they can't afford to separate themselves like this - just makes it all the more imperative for him to get him back safely. ]

[ back into the jungle... oh boy! for those preparing for the trip, it's probably not too difficult to notice the young man, of course in his flight suit, and his saddled night fury. there's a bag hanging from toothless' saddle, which hiccup pulls at carefully, before he moves to the dragon's tail to fiddle with the prosthetic there. ]
We can take one or two people, so if anyone ever wanted to take a ride on a dragon, now's your chance. [ that's what he'll offer with some undertones of amusement as he finishes his last minute rechecking of their equipment.
and if he doesn't recognize you, excuse him as a hint of something passes through his expression. then, as he stands, a gesture to both him and the dragon: ] Uh, Hiccup and Toothless, by the way.
[ PHASE II. ]
[ it takes a lot to injure stoick the vast. but those that approach hiccup and toothless now, at this section of the jungle, won't witness the rare event that hiccup's seeing. no, what they'll see is hiccup, eyes towards his injured father that isn't really there, and a dragon tugging him back despite the varying amounts of resistance.
the viking seems confused, panicked and frustrated all at once, as he tries to nudge past the dragon-shaped barricade currently stopping him from moving and urging him in the other direction. they have experience with rushing towards plants, and they're not good experiences--couple that with toothless sensing approaching danger. ]
Toothless, what're you-- [ hiccup, on the other hand, is too focused on the figure he hasn't seen in too long. ] Toothless! Dad's right there, he's-- we can't leave him!
[ someone tell the dumb viking to listen to his dragon, okay. ]
[ PHASE III. ]
[ everything sure has been sufficiently amazing. but it's also par for the course when it comes to things here, so hiccup can't say he's as exhausted as he would've been before spending a good number of months in cerealia. at least talking with the natives had yielded some results after their initial struggle, and after some mild convincing. one of the things he can say he's good at.
now hiccup is leaning on toothless near the fire at the center of the group's resting spot, either marking down some things on the map in front of him, or fiddling with his retractable... flaming... sword. a press of a button and the blade is out, on fire, before he returns it into its hilt and takes out a cartridge from the bottom, swapping it with another in toothless' bag. ]
We're gonna have to get more of these, huh, bud?

[ Yosuke hates bugs, but these bugs? These are the worst bugs. They're even worse than cockroaches, and that's saying a hell of a lot coming from him. But what makes them so bad, you ask? Well, Yosuke has been on the receiving end of one too many hugs from people who've been bitten by these stupid things. Today, though, it's time to switch things up, apparently.
Yosuke's minding his own business, already scratching at his arms due to the general gross and itchy that the jungle so helpfully provides on its own. He doesn't even notice the fresh new bite on his arm, the way his skin is turning the slightest bit more red. To be honest, he doesn't know a single thing is even remotely amiss...
... Until he finds himself closing the distance between himself and the nearest person, and going in for a hug. From behind? From the side? From in front? Hey, whatever
or whatever makes him the most uncomfortable, if that's your styleHe's not picky. Well, except for the fact that he doesn't actually want this to be happening. ]Oh my God, you havegot to be kidding me...!
[ He groans, all theatrics, including the dramatic closing of his eyes in undignified resignation. Can he let go yet? Because he really wants to let go, even if his arms won't move. Ugh. Why. ]

[ Kyouko shows up at the tail end of arrivals, taking her time as always. Once she's gotten her supplies, she'll be standing off to the side until they're ready to go. Feel free to approach her, introduce yourself, whatever.

[ At certain times throughout the second day, Kyouko can be seen staring off into the trees, her expression hard. She knows what she's seeing isn't real—yet it's bringing out emotions she'd rather not deal with regardless. ]
Don't believe everything you see. [ It sounds cryptic, but she's saying it as much for your benefit as her own. ]

[ By nighttime, Kyouko has settling down by one of the harmless trees, staring down one of the paths as she thinks. If someone happens to approach her she'll ask: ]

[ Of course, Yu is here for all your greeting and supply-handing out needs. He'll be mingling as much as possible, introducing people who don't know each other and doing his best to make sure everyone is ready to go. Of course, everyone here knows him already, considering he extended all the invitations.
But when everyone is ready to go, he will summon Izanagi-no-Okami, to let everyone in the group who hasn't seen his Persona get used to the sight of the guy. ]
This is Izanagi. He'll be helping us get over the wall.
[ phase ii ]
[ Yu doesn't react to the hallucinations in the trees as much as some of the others do. You might think he takes it almost disturbingly in stride if you don't know him very well. But in truth, it affects him as badly as it does anyone else; he's just much quieter about it. It's in the way his eyes tighten, the way his hands compulsively curl, in the way he ducks his chin and looks at the ground instead of at the path ahead. His jaw flexes a little too much. And he can't help the way his eyes sometimes lock on the trees, like there's something he can see out there that he just can't look away from. ]
We need to keep the group tightly together, [ he'll murmur to whoever is nearest. ] If anyone runs off right now, it could be dangerous.
[ He only reacts violently once. Whatever he sees, it gets him to actually curse, tearing his gaze away as he drops his chin and slams his fist into a tree.
(Un?)thankfully, an unfriendly presence crashing through the trees doesn't give him much time to dwell, and he'll end up turning all his energies to the fight instead. ]

[ phase iii ]
[ Considering that this chance meeting with Tellus's is the entire reason he pushed into the jungle with a motley crew in the first place, this is the most energized anyone will have seen Yu since they all set out, monster attacks and traps of all sorts notwithstanding. You may even see him pull out a notebook to take notes once careful negotiations are over, though he was active during those too, careful and gentle and quiet and everything that might help the natives feel more at peace with these interlopers.
Still, once it's over, there's so much to think about - and so much on his mind - that he gives the order for everyone to rest. You're welcome to argue with him or try to press the point, if you like. You can find him at the center of whatever camp the group has set up, sitting near and staring into the fire, apparently deep in contemplation. After how active and involved he was earlier in the day, he seems strangely quiet and withdrawn come evening. He'll still nod a hello to anyone who approaches, at least, but he doesn't smile. ]
[ phase iv ]
[ Come true game time, though, Yu is completely on the ball. With Izanagi at his side Yu will be at the forefront of the fray, doing his best to call out orders and direct the flow of battle even when he's not 100% familiar with how everyone fights. Whether or not you listen to him is your choice; he won't admonish anyone for refusing to listen to his orders.
You may find, however, that Izanagi is barreling into you to push you out of the way of a suddenly surprise lunge from the monster, and when Izanagi gets pierced with the beast's stinger, Yu still cries out in pain, faltering for a second before he tries to rally and regain his focus.
At some point during the fight, he swaps to Saturnus and will call out to whoever is nearest, apparently hoping for a joint attack. ]

[ Too anxious and excited to sleep well the night before, Dipper nonetheless arrives by the shrine bright and early and ready to go, if a bit groggy. He's brought his own pack of essentials that probably overlaps a lot with what Yu is handing out, but after the way his last trip into the jungle had gone, it couldn't hurt to be a little over-prepared.
Yes, he would make sure things went differently this time. He was going back into the jungle not only to learn more of this planet's secrets, because there undoubtedly about a million things to learn and discover and he wanted all of it. But more than that, he had something to prove. Mabel going missing during their last jungle excursion had preoccupied every dark corner of his mind since it had happened. He had to face this place. He had to prove that this jungle couldn't knock him down again.
He knows about half the group here, and figures it would be prudent to know the other half since he'll be traveling with them and in several senses, relying on them to survive over the coming days. However, social grace isn't his forte, so the best he can do is sort of sidle up by people awkwardly, hands in his vest pockets and peering up at them underneath the brim of his pine tree hat. ]
Heeeeeeey. Uh. So. The jungle, am I right?
[ Then later, having no flying buddy of his own, Dipper has to have SOMEONE help him over this wall. Who will it be?? ]
[ PHASE III ]
[ After speaking with the natives, Dipper spends a good while taking copious notes in a notebook he'd brought with him. What they said was certainly intriguing, but it wasn't enough. He needs more answers. What weren't they telling them? Surely they had more to say, language barrier or no.
They've been told not to enter the villages, but...a little peek around the perimeter couldn't hurt, right? So he waits until everyone is asleep (or so he thinks) and then creeps out of his sleeping bag. Someone had better stop this idiot. ]
[ BONUS / WILDCARD ]
[ Okay, really? Really? The hugging bug again? As if the last time wasn't enough, Dipper is now compelled to hug whoever he catches sight of. Great. Because he's such a hugging type.
Or team up with him to take down a monster! He'll be the brains, you be the muscle. Or he can try to be the muscle, but it will go hilariously bad. Choose your own Dipventure. ]

okay, just kidding. from behind dipper, the sound of heavy footsteps as hiccup, mounted on toothless, approaches him. the dragon offers the boy something like a bubbled noise from the back of his throat, nostrils twitching while he sniffs curiously. the last time they met, the flight had been... interesting, to say the least. ]
Morning, Dipper.
[ not a greeting from toothless, of course, but rather the viking on his back. his hands are settled on the saddle, peg-leg slotted into the mechanism to control the prosthetic tail. basically? all set to go. ]

"Dipper! It worked! We've finally found you!"
A familiar-unfamiliar voice cuts through the monotonous sound of his shoes trudging trough the greenery. Dipper's head snaps up as he looks wildly around. No way, it couldn't be - but he could've sworn it was -
"Great Uncle Ford?"
The rest of the group is out of sight now, but he can still hear them. It - wouldn't hurt. To linger here for a moment. He knew full well about the hallucinations the trees had given others in the party, and that was probably the case for him, too. But...he just has to make sure. After all, Grunkle Ford had traveled dimensions before. If anyone could have come here to save him, it was Ford.
A rustling through the trees - and a moment later, Ford steps into sight, looking every bit the interdimensional, journal-slinging hero Dipper knew he was. The Author came here to rescue him. Of course he would - how could Dipper have ever doubted?
"We don't have much time! The portal only stays open for a few minutes." Ford waves for Dipper to follow him, but Dipper's legs feel bolted to the spot. Doubt creeps into his sensibilities again. What if this was all a trap? He needed to get back to the group. He needed to...
"Um, earth to Dipper! Come on, bro-bro!" Then Mabel is at Ford's side, tugging on Dipper's hand, urging him to move. Mabel. Mabel is here. She's safe. She's alive.
His hope in his sister unravels his doubts, and he grins, a genuine happiness warming his heart that he hasn't felt in a long time. That couldn't be a lie - not that feeling. Not the feeling of his sister of his sister's hand in his, a reassurance of life defying even his worst nightmares about what happened to her that day in the jungle. They were gonna be okay, he was going to get home. So he finally gives into their urging and breaks out into a run after Ford, Mabel at his side. He's going home, he's going home.
He keeps running, despite his fatigue and despite the fact that he loses sight of Grunkle Ford between the trees, like a flame flickering in and out. How far could the portal be? How had they been able to track down where he'd be in the wild jungle? And then, a thought strikes him, and he shouts out to his great uncle up ahead. "Wait - my friends! We have to go back for them! Grunkle Ford, we have to find a way to get them home, too!"
"There's no time, Dipper, just keep running!"
"We can't just leave them here!" The trees are thick, and Dipper can't see Ford at all now. He only has Mabel still holding onto his hand now to steel his will. Torn between the obvious choice to go home or to remain and do the noble thing by waiting until everyone can be rescued, Dipper pleads again. "Great Uncle Ford, we have to-"
His breaks into a clearing as his foot snags on the branch of a felled log, losing his grip on Mabel's hand and tumbling in a heap to the dirt. For a moment, all he can hear is the ringing in his ears, too sore and exhausted to get up, and then, silence.
"M-Mabel? Great Uncle Ford?" He calls out as he pushes himself upright, but his shouts are met only with more silence.
Well, no, that's not entirely true. A moment later, the silence is consumed by a deep, guttural growl from behind him in the clearing. And when he finally finds the energy to stand up and turn around - thanks to adrenaline and fear - he finds himself face to face with this unholy monstrosity.
The monster only surveys him for the moment, and Dipper, barely daring to breathe, carefully reaches into his vest for the journal. If he can just dispatch it on his own -
And then the beast screeches, its roar ringing loud and clear throughout the jungle, awakening its dozens of smaller minions nesting in the trees nearby.
Dipper does the next thing he thinks of. It's the only thing he can do.
He runs. ]

At least, he tries to be.
He knew Dipper was flagging behind, let him because he knew his friend was tired, they're all tired after countless monsters and days of struggling to breathe, was just trying to keep a head count on everyone before they maybe tried to take to the skies again for their final push home, their break for safety, and then they'd be out of this, they'd be safe, they'd be home, finally, and he let himself get distracted with a conversation for just a second--
And when he turned to do a headcount again, Dipper was gone.
Yu had stopped the group immediately and raised the alarm, and sent them all running, so they'll meet Dipper on the way. They just fought a huge monster yesterday; everyone is tired, and Link is sick, needs the kind of help that they don't seem able to give right now, but they have to do this or they'll all die out here. Code or not, regenerate from the Nexus or not, Yu's going to take death seriously. He can't forget the look on Hiro's face when the younger boy told him about his brother's death in the jungle.
Maybe he can't stop whatever's about to happen. But he has to try. ]
Dipper!
[ Izanagi bursts into life and slams into the monster. There's a screech and a crackle of lightning while Yu occupies himself with grabbing Dipper and hauling him to safety. ]
I've got you!
[ The monster has other plans. It makes a bizarre, high pitched, unholy hissing noise, sinking its massive fangs into Izanagi's arm and sending Yu reeling with a noise of pain. ]
