Always Believe in the Heart of the Cards Except When They Tell You to Kill People

Welcome to CERES Research Tower’s latest event! For all you new folk queuing outside of the conference room where you were just made to sit through a lovely power point presentation, you will be asked to stay a bit longer and test out some games in their Game Testing Center. It’s a giant space located in the basement level filled to the brim with cubicles for everyone to sit in and enjoy their newest array of pop-up games. The games themselves will be in holo(gm) form and will feature suggestions from CEO’s post, including a simplified, 8-bit version of Tetris, Baseball, Soda Smash, etc. Characters can control the game through moving their fingers and tapping them against the holo(gm) screens.

Surrounding the cubicles will be tables of food and more food for characters to partake in. It’s all safe this time. No mind-altering candy corn or gut-exploding Knight Burgers. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the party. For those who have been in Cerealia for a while, they should have received an invitation to the event and an offer of 1,000 credits just for participating. So come on down and bring a friend or ten! Meanwhile, CEO has a small welcome for everyone-

“Good Morning and thank you all for coming!

We have been expecting you. We hope you will enjoy what we’ve put together today. Ever since we got your feedback on << RAINBOW NARWHAL MELEE >>, we’ve been developing new games for all of you to enjoy. We’ve also tried to draw in some things from your worlds. PHASE I

[ xxxx ] Music lightly wafts from the speakers as the showroom opens. Julius Vincere, CERES’ CEO, delivers the opening announcement before leaving the room. He’ll be watching through all the video cameras placed around the room, so be on your best behavior! You will be guided to one of the many cubicles where you will sit and wait for a screen to pop up with a game. Once that game is defeated, another will pop up and another and another until your character gets hungry/has to pee/is so done with this shit.

PHASE II

[ xxxx ] Among the game rotations is a simple 8-bit fortune telling game starring Aria, the fortune teller. Come be enchanted by her mysterious wiles as she reads your future. She will do some 8-bit arm motions before summoning a ring of cards that will float around her. Characters will be encouraged to pick a card -any card. Once one has been selected, it will turn around slowly and unveil a card from the major arcana. Aria will then give your character their fortune, and that will be that. End of game. Onto the next!

PHASE III

[ xxxx ] You’ve left the testing center, and the evening has passed. As you wake up to perform your normal daily tasks, a niggling urge emerges at the back of your mind. It’s faint at first, just a whisper of a suggestion that pokes at your brain like a mosquito bite. However, that bite starts to grow bigger and become infectious. As the day wears on, you find that one little suggestion escalating. The next day is even worse. It starts to dominate your every thought, making you carry out actions you never thought yourself capable of. Who is this person in the mirror? Who have you become?

PHASE IV

[ xxxx ] By day three, the impulse is now a full-blown addiction. It’s set into your psyche completely. You’ve become something else entirely –the embodiment of the card. You will be acting out everything without anymore resistance, and it won’t stop until the clock strikes midnight. That’s when you’ll reel back to your senses, and when it’ll all have felt like the worst dream ever. Or a nightmare really.

BONUS

[ whyo'clock ] Among all the games present, there is also an 8-bit version of CERESLearn. Yes, you remember the magical game that won your hearts over not too long ago. It will come complete with the same rules. You choose a subject, you choose an 8-bit teacher among the three (Astor), (Hilda), or (UN-Zippy), and you watch them as they try to erotically teach you what you want to learn. Is that an 8-bit boob or her arm? Who knows? But beware… as you may remember, these teachers house a very terrible secret.

They will transform into an 8-bit giant bug that will chase around your protag as you guide them to run away with your finger, but you can also flick the bug on the holo(gm) screen to send them away for good. Those who figure out that little cheat code will immediately receive a special real-time shoulder rub as a reward from a robot that looks eerily like a carbon copy of their teacher of choice.

Now that you mention it—yes. [Touka, don't even pretend you didn't call her over here to do some petty task...] I noticed I stepped on some chewing gum earlier.

[And lo and behold, she uncrosses her leg and lifts one of her feet up to reveal... chewing gum stuck to the heel of her boot. Blue, sticky chewing gum. Wow.]

Find a way to get it out.

[There's a lot Sakura can put up with. Too much, to be honest, but there's just something about this she can't take. Maybe it's because this girl had been so demanding for what turns out to be something so simple. Maybe it's because she's feeling even more uncomfortable around people than usual today. Whatever the reason, she's feeling pretty NOPE.JPG about this.]

That's, um... I don't think I'd be very good at that. Maybe you should ask someone else... [Or do it herself, but she won't actually say that out loud.]

Idiot. What kind of shitty short term memory is that? Did you forget already? [She did, didn't she? Man, she's surrounded by worthless dumbasses today... except she totally isn't. Touka's just being a thousand times more terrible than usual. She is going to be so, so, so sorry about everything ever later.

But seeing as it is not yet later, she's going to be rolling her eyes at this girl now.]

[Even in her social anxiety panicked state, she wishes someone else was here if only so they could take care of this instead!! Why can't this person even do it themselves? She wants to ask, but it'll probably just make her even more mad... Handling this much is hard enough as is.]

[...It takes her a lot longer than it probably should to answer her question, but ultimately, she nods. Count your lucky stars, man.]

Sure. [VERY CONDESCENDING.] It's not like there's anything else you can do for me.

[U G H. She doesn't say it of course, but her expression alone is probably enough to convey it. As much as she doesn't want to do this, it's not like she has much choice now.]

[Shhhh... Scraping gross chewing gum off Touka's foot is something EVERYONE should want to do. It's like, the biggest honor. This girl should frame that piece of gum after this, okay.

Which is to say, here's to hoping she enjoys having a foot suddenly shoved at her, inches away from her face. Ew.]

[GROSS but there's no other option now... Sakura takes out a handkerchief from her pocket, and with great regret, starts trying to pry the gum off Touka's foot. This poor handkerchief has seen better days, that's for sure......

But honestly this is hard GUM ISN'T EASY TO GET RID OF. She might be here for a while at this rate.]

Just how hard did you step into this gum...?

[Considering how big a wad it is, it's probably going to be a teeny bit hard getting it out without spreading it further. Or, uh, losing the handkerchief to the sole of Touka's boot. That, too.

She shrugs.]

How the hell should I know? All I know is I stepped on it.

[SPOILER ALERT: Very hard. She might have rubbed her foot in it, too.]

[It's not just stepped on it at this point, more like she purposefully placed the gum as flat against her shoe as possible... Sakura's a pro at cleaning in general, but she's not even sure she can really get this whole thing off like this.]

I see... Well, I hate to say it, but it seems like I might not be able to take the whole thing off.

Jeez... Are you sure? [TRAGICALLY SIGHS, like she's not being the most ungrateful person in the world right now.]

What a waste of my time.

I'd need another cloth, or maybe a napkin... [She even looks around for one, putting in the effort to help better DESPITE NOT WANTING TO BE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.]

Why not just use your sleeve?

[That's... going too far. And very gross. She's going to rue this day once this is all done, whoops.]

I-I can't do that! I'd never be able to get it out of sleeve! [Please spare the clothing at least...!]

Then throw your shirt out. [Nothing will be spared... not even a shred of dignity.]

[Honestly it's not even a shirt that she's deeply attached to, but it's the principle of the thing!! Why should she have to waste a shirt she spent money on to clean gum off a shoe?!

Although she's really the one who let herself get into this situation in the first place...]

You would owe me a new shirt then... [She tries to make a comeback, but it's pitiful honestly.]

[It's pitiful, but it sure as heck is pretty legit, too. Alas, Touka doesn't really get it in her current state of mind. She just thinks she's stupid for even saying it.]

Haah? And why would I owe you anything? It's just a shirt, you know.

[The same could be said for her boot, though.]

But—I'm going to have to get rid of it to help you! [It's not like she's directly blaming her, but apparently even like this Sakura can find ways to be passive-aggressive...]

And? Is that a problem? [YES, TOUKA. IT'S A PROBLEM. The world does not revolve around you, jeez...!!]

Well, I mean... [SHOULDN'T THAT BE OBVIOUS?!?! God, this is miserable enough as is though. If she tries to push it any further, she might just make this whole thing even worse. With a heavy sigh, she mumbles:] No, it's not.

[GOOD. THAT'S WHAT SHE THOUGHT. She's going to be so, so sorry about this once all of this is over. But for now? All she cares about is getting that gum out of her shoe.]

Then what are you waiting around for?

[WAITING FOR THIS MISERY TO END TBH but there's... really only one way to do that at this point. Silently, Sakura takes her sleeve and continues to clean the gum off of Touka's shoe, finally managing to get most of it off after a bit.

Is she free from this hell yet.... That was the agreement, right?!]

There. Is that good now?

[THE LIGHT. IT IS FINALLY THERE WITHIN HER REACH. Probably. Touka takes her sweet time inspecting her shoe, face carefully blank like she didn't just torment a poor, random stranger.

After a moment, she huffs.]

I guess that's good enough. [It's not even great. Just "good enough". THAT'S SO RUDE.]

[AT LONG LAST HER STRUGGLES HAVE PAID OFF..... Except not really in the end, but Sakura's desperate enough to leave to take a half-assed compliment like that.]

... As long as it's fine then. [Okay maybe she's miffed about it, BUT THE POINT IS, it's done. Even after all that, she nods her head politely to head off.] I'll be taking my leave now.

Yeah — whatever. Scram. [Waving her off.

REJOICE, YOU POOR STRANGER. YOU ARE FREE.]
