![]() A few weeks prior to December 26th, an invitation went out to all whom already reside in Cerealia. In delicate, curling script, it read: You are cordially invited by Natalia L.K. Lanvaldear to a Winter Ball to be held on the Eve of December 26th in the Gardens. Dress in your best attire and enjoy a magical evening of dance and fine cuisine. What do you mean we should fuss about worlds being destroyed? Get into the holiday spirit, you scrooge! And in regards to the new-comers: whether you have been wandering Cerealia over the course of the past few days and managed to receive one of the later waves of invitations or have simply suddenly appeared in the gardens with nothing but the (hopefully…. appropriate….) clothes on your back, welcome. The gardens have been transformed through the work of

Souji (Hakuouki)
...four months.
[ About four months ago he'd still been with Itou's faction. ]
What happened? [ Saitou stops himself from asking how this is even possible, because there's no reasons for lies. He isn't doubting your word, Souji, but this is a concept he's not quite wrapping his head around. ] It looks as if my arrival is untimely.
no subject
[he says that with a fairly typical light tone, but there's no denying the underlying weight to his words. it's a lot easier to start this off by not getting too serious, because the conversation is very well likely to take a much darker tone pretty quickly.]
But what happened... hm. I guess that depends on whether Saitou-kun wants the short version, or the long version. [with that weight to his tone also comes the slightly more formal form address—souji's subtle way of implying that shit's about to get real here.]
no subject
[ Still, Saitou can't shake the feeling there's something wrong. He rests his arm against his sword; the address of his name not lost on him. ]
The long version; we have time. [ He's not leaving anytime soon. ]
no subject
[he lets out a laugh that's dry, and even slightly bitter. truthfully, he was hoping this wouldn't have to happen quite yet, even if souji knows that it's a foolish hope. saitou's not the type to keep himself in the dark, especially not when it comes to a situation like this.
so even if he expected it in full, he's still not too thrilled about it. but, in typical souji fashion, he's doing all he can to not let those things show. instead, he speaks casual, somewhat flippant as he explains. he figures he can do it this way, because saitou should already know that things are more dire than he expresses.]
It just happens that way with places like this. New worlds, run by this big corporations... they don't care much about things like time and space. What could be a day for you can mean a year has passed for me, or the other way around. Sometimes, you even meet people from times hundreds of years before or after what we know.
Really, that's all pretty common. The world is a lot bigger than what little of it we were protecting in Kyoto. [it makes him feel pretty small and insignificant whenever he thinks about it, too. they, the shinsengumi, worked so hard to protect the shogunate, kyoto, and all of japan—not just from the threats beyond their waters that loomed, but from themselves.
but that doesn't really compare when thinking about the thousands of universes and timelines they're able to cross paths with while trying to fight for their own freedom and ability to return to their lives back home.]
no subject
He listens to that explanation, the way he usually listens when orders are being given.
'The world is a lot bigger than what little of it we were protecting in Kyoto.'
Somehow, that phrase bothers him the most, out of everything that has been said. Mostly the protecting part, because...that's all gone now, isn't it. Nothing there would make an impact here. But however much it bothers him, he presses down on that thought. There's other questions that matter more. ]
By "new worlds," you mean... [ His voice stops. Put that together with the explanations about time and the fact there is more than one.... ] This is not the first place you have been in.
[ While yes, that information might've come from somewhere else, there a sort of underlying resigned, bitter tone that does not come from secondhand information. ] How many times have we run into each other, then?
