[ He tenses instinctively at the look he's given -- measuring, efficiently so, despite the apparent comfort with which Rin is regarded. He's a shred of normalcy tossed into a world that's anything but, and he's starting to realize that the people he's encountering may not have known the same ebb and flow of ease that Rin has.

The tension doesn't sluice away, even after he has been released from the scales of that glowing gaze. He tries, but Rin has no mind for deception, even when danger might be a poor decision away; it's why he moves forward instead of away, hungry for a moment - a moment! - of camaraderie amidst the tumult of all else. ]

Of course not.

[ But the denial is too quickly given, Rin's eyes a shade darker than they had been a moment prior. It's not that he hadn't harbored doubts, not that he hadn't looked around himself and thought what a sick joke, remembering the molasses-like quality to every nightmare he's gritted through since his father's passing, but he'd had no reason to toss everything out entirely. Intelligence is quickly subsumed by fear when you're seventeen and the worst danger you've known is a loss of self. ]

— why, do you have a better explanation for all of this?
