Oh, the food is safe! Nakigitsune has eaten a few of their snacks, and hasn't come to any harm so far.

[Not that he needs to eat? Can swords even get sick...it doesn't have any supernatural effects, at least.]

I'd assume they'd be satisfied by now though, if you've gone through so much...though the first goal would be to find the exit again.
