You're probably woken up by the explosion first. A loud, deafening boom comes from behind the walls of the residential district. When you look outside your window towards the darker, more secretive area of the city, you might see the structure around it... crumbling, the land falling in on itself slowly but surely. That might be what wakes you up first. If it doesn't, you may be awoken instead by the sudden jerking feeling behind your navel pulling you from where you are to somewhere... else.

It's dark. The first thing you notice is that it's dark -- and then come the scrabbling sounds of creatures in the dark, like metal being dragged across metal, a chilling, sharp sound. The first thing that becomes clear, as your vision adjusts, is that you're on a rickety pathway, metal and rusting and frail, above what appears to be yawning blackness. Far, far below, there's the faint sound of rushing water, a ways away.

The second thing that becomes clear is that you are very much not alone. Something is out there with you, and from the screeching metallic noises that come ever closer, it seems to be stalking you.

Thankfully, you're not alone -- right?

...

...........

:)

//SCENARIOS.EXE

PHASE I

[ ??? ] It’s drafty here. You’re below ground, that’s for certain from the echoes of the wind in the darkness. If you continue on forwards along the rickety, metal railing that serves as a walkway, the skittering noises of creatures in the dark follow -- but they don’t appear.

It seems everyone has been dumped along this pathway at random; you may be with friends, with enemies or with someone you’ve never met before, but either way, it soon becomes clear. There are only two ways to go along this path: up or down.

If you choose to take the path that follows a gradual slope down, the sounds of water lapping against a surface increase bit by bit, the air growing heavier and danker, until finally, the metallic platform gives way very suddenly (watch your step!) to a muddy bank. Down here, everything is darker, and not far away there’s the water. It’s cold and frigid and there are unfriendly creatures that await if you choose to delve into it. However, if you brave those creatures, and dive deeply enough, there is a mask. It rests half-buried by silt and rocks, but it’s there, and can be found by any intrepid explorers.

Somehow, it feels a little familiar.

And if you carry on in the cave system underground, eventually you will come across what appears to be an altar. There is blood on it -- not fresh, but not more than a month old -- and pieces of trinkets. Old bits of cloth, locks of hair, and some of them may even be familiar. Any dropped character who has a reasonably large amount of spiritual or magical power may have left scraps, such as pieces of clothing, trinkets, hair, or the sort behind at the altar.

Maybe that's why they weren't in the Nexus Code.

PHASE II

[ ??? ] If you go up, you will eventually make your way above ground. It takes some time, and some luck -- you’ll have to avoid rusty railing and pathways, the path crumbling under you and that creeping sensation that something is following and watching you -- and then you’ll suddenly be in fresh air.

Well. It’s not so fresh, really.

The landscape is broken down and crumbled. It may have once been part of the city of Cerealia, but now it is in utter disrepair and decay. Buildings have crumbled, and debris is everywhere. There are signs of the same level of technology that Cerealia has -- but it is all broken down and utterly inaccessible.

And you’re not alone.

It seems the technology and metal and broken down destruction has gained sentience over its time sitting alone, waiting. And it is not happy to be disturbed. The creatures are made of pieces of everything around them, and when cut down, they’ll just slowly rebuild themselves from the debris.

It might be time to run.

They aren't happy about being disturbed, and you're in their way.

PHASE III

[ ??? ] Above ground, there are a lot of broken down buildings.

Some can’t be accessed at all; some are too broken, too reduced to rubble. For those looking for shelter, they'll be able to find buildings where the doors can be forced open and they can camp out on the inside to various degrees of stability. Though the ceiling may cave in or the floor fall out from under you at a moment's notice, it's better than being out there. Be careful, because none of the architecture here can be trusted anymore.

And other buildings... are even less trustworthy than that.

There is a series of buildings in the midst of the wasteland, somehow still standing. They stand there silently, towering over the rest of the rubble in their two-story glory, and if the doors are forced open, it soon becomes clear that the building itself is full of mirrors.

Once, the mirrors had perhaps covered the walls and ceiling. Once, this building might have been akin to something of a ballet studio, somewhere to express yourself creatively. But now the mirrors are shattered and broken into pieces and the building lacks the joy it might have once held. Shards of mirror cover the floor, some big, some not so big, but they still hang from the walls as well and everywhere you look, you can see yourself.

And then, the reflection changes. From one blink to the next, you see a memory playing in the mirrors. Your memory. You’ll see a glimpse of one of your most traumatic or life-changing moments, broken up but clear in the shards. Blink and look away, and it’s gone, only to show up again in the next mirror a few moments later. Surely it’s just a trick of the light, right?

Except if someone else is with you, they’ll see it too -- and you might end up seeing a bit of their own past as well. Hope you're fond of sharing.

PHASE IV

[ ??? ] If you survive the monsters, the crumbling landscape and the untrustworthy buildings, you may eventually find a terminal. It is buried deep among the rubble. One turn around a corner, one stumble into a hole, and you will find it. It sits there, out in the middle of nowhere; the building in which it used to be housed is apparently long gone, reduced to nothing but rubble.

And if you turn it on, there is a brief message.

Transmission Broadcasting.

Transmission Connected.

And then, there is a face.

BONUS

[ ??? ] For those who have been wearing their masks a little too much, they might also start to notice that there are some strange effects attached, which worsen the more they’ve been wearing said masks. How badly they worsen is up to your discretion.

➝ Broken Mask: An intense feeling of paranoia, focused on whoever your character is with. They might also begin to remember fabricated memories of being betrayed by those people.

➝ Barcode Mask: Everything will begin to have value to them. There will be whispers in the back of their mind of the worth of their friends, the worth of a monster, the worth of everything around them. An intense need to own and consume as much as possible and as quickly as possible.

➝ Dripping Blood Mask: An intense lack of self-worth, a hollow feeling and thoughts of being weak and empty. Feeling as disposable as possible and an intense listless along with it.

:( Mask: A need to prove yourself, to show everyone how strong you are as quickly as possible. You can do things, you can be of worth to everyone around you. Why won't they see that? Why?

➝ Ivy Mask: A choking sort of terror from all things metal and technology based, and a need to lash out against it. An intense distrust for anything that they feel is against the laws of nature.

➝ Grey Mask: More personable than normal, more emotional, more empathetic. An intense feeling of kindness and gratitude to those around you and a renewed love of life.

➝ Feather Mask: A dulled, lack of emotion. A detached feeling to everything around you. A sort of bland curiosity towards things without any empathetic reaction.

➝ Bloody Fingerprints Mask: They'll feel absolutely fine. No change.

The effects of the broken mask can stack on top of the others, if they chose to break their mask after the other effects began to appear. No other effects can be stacked, as no other changes can be stacked.

PENALTY

[ ??? ] For characters who die while in the dark parts of the city, things will get... a little strange. They will die as normal, but they will wake up almost immediately after their death -- in the Nexus Code. They will have a few surreal moments to be there, to see their friends who have left Cerealia hanging lifelessly from odd, glimmering strands (though there are some faces, of course, that are missing, anyone who was spiritual, or magical, seems strangely absent) and then --

They’re back to being dead.

When characters revive in Cerealia, anywhere from one IC day to three or four IC days later, they will find that things are… not quite right with their code. They’re glitching, for a lack of a better word. Sometimes, their fingers will phase right through an object, their own limbs registering as cold and lifeless. Sometimes, they will see a face watching them -- but when they turn around to try to see who it is, the face will be gone.

These effects will last an IC week, before slowly things go back to normal.

That was strange.

[ The terminal flickers to life, and there's a message:

Communication Transmission Beginning.

And then, on the screen, there's an alien with a mask. It's clear that whatever it is, it isn't human; while it stands upright, there is no uncovered skin, and nothing can be seen behind the mask or dark clothing.

On the mask, there is a smile.

Comment here if you'd like to attempt to contact the mysterious masked alien! There's definitely a bit of a puzzle to getting them to be willing to chat, but there must be some way, right...?

PHASE I

[A cool breeze blew against the young girl's face, slowly lulling her out of her sleep.]

[Blinking several times, she slowly opened her eyes and was greeted by darkness. Almost. She could just barely see. Enough to tell her that she was no longer at the apartment. But...she also wasn't in any ViViD game, either. Not that she could remember.]

Where...am I?

[She sat up. Head slowly darting around in search of something familiar. Neither her eyes nor her expression told of fear. Only confusion. When no immediate answers came to her, she stood up and brushed some of the dirt from her clothing. She looked one way. Then the other. Up or down. Only two choices, with no indication beyond relative direction as to what separated one from the other.]

[Or, more importantly, which one she should take.]

[Her body relaxed. She closed her eyes. Thinking of who she wanted to see most right then. Her brother. But Taichi wasn't here. The little alert system she'd been given would have told her. Takeru. He was here. Probably. And so were her other friends she'd made in the city...]

[When her eyes opened again, she realized she was glowing. Just like in the subway tunnels. That soft, white Light that seemed to emit from every inch of her. Hair, clothing, skin, and all. It was warm and comforting, in spite of the fact that she still didn't know where it was coming from, and--most importantly--as she quietly asked in her mind which way she should go, it shot out in one distinct direction.]

[Wordlessly, she began to follow it. Knowing it would take her where she most needed to be.]

Phase III

[It was as if she'd been drawn to that room in particular.]

[She'd hardly spared the other buildings a second glance. Most of them were worn. Barely standing. Even worse than Mugendramon's city. After a digimon battle. This one was mostly in-tact, though, and even took several attempts before she could get the door open. Like it had been stuck or rusted shut.]

[Inside, there were mirrors. Lots of mirrors. The wall. The ceiling. So many angles of her. All of them broken or shattered, some so much so that she could barely make out her own reflection behind the spider web of fractures--]

[--or that of Wizarmon--]

[Her whole body froze, and she turned back to that one shard. Her own brown eyes stared back.]

[But then she turned again, and in another shard...that image. Wizarmon standing in front of her and Tailmon and Vamdemon unleashed his attack. The one that had been meant to kill her. Would have killed her, if her hero hadn't sacrificed himself on her behalf.]

[Hikari's eyes flooded with tears. She dropped to her knees. The door behind her, which had been left open since she first entered the room, carried her voice out into the streets. Along with her sobs:]

W-Wizarmon....

BONUS

[The effects were so subtle, Hikari barely noticed what was happening.]

[She didn't grow tired. It was more like...the light inside her dimming. Her eyes dulling until she could stare directly ahead and see nothing at all. It didn't bother her. She wasn't afraid.]

[But only because, by the time she sat down, resting her back against the wall, she wasn't feeling anything at all.]

Phase I

[She chose down.]

[The path was long, and difficult to maneuver with the lack of light. Iris, herself, was frightened, but not enough to stop her. There must have been a reason why she was brought here, after all. Somebody wanted her to find something. How could she stay put knowing that much?]

[When she found the alter, she thought she understood. A part of the puzzle, at least. It looked...like some sort of sacrifice ritual had taken place. Judging by the blood. Pangs of nausea threatened to overtake her stomach, but she swallowed and held her head up high as she continued to approach. Eyeing the different artifacts scattered about.]

How horrible. Who...could have done something like this?

BONUS

[Her heart was pounding. Her head swam. Those memories...it couldn't be...but it was.]

[Eyes wide, she took a step back from the person approaching her. Trying in vain to keep her voice steady.]

S-stay back. Don't...come near me...

( phase i )

[the sound of the explosion had only barely woken stahn up—just enough for him to stumble out of bed and grab dymlos, because that has miraculously become his first instinct to that sort of sound (well, that and the ringing in his ears that comes from dymlos sternly yelling at him, though that's less prevalent). he barely even has time to process what's happening before he's pulled from the apartment.

he's dumped not far from the split in the pathway, and mostly? stahn is just standing there looking groggy and puzzled.]

Heeeh....? [he should definitely be a lot more alarmed than he is, but the truth of the matter is waking stahn up is difficult, and he's almost positive he's dreaming. naturally, he's being reprimanded by dymlos—those who can hear him will probably be able to catch that from a distance.

of course, this is also why he's thoughtlessly rambling sleepily to his sword with little regard for the fact that most people can't hear it.]

Stop yelling, Dymlos... even in dreams, you nag too much... [stahn, that's not what's happening here at all. eventually, he'll elect to take the up path, but for now... for now, it's this.]

( phase iii; )

[he managed to wake up eventually. and somehow, he's gotten above ground relatively unscathed—a few scratches and bruises, but nothing he can't handle. he's not really sure what to make of where he is; it's dangerous, and stahn is treading very carefully. his curiosity gets the better of him and he uses dymlos to force the door open.

the fact that there are mirrors everywhere is equally curious, but not too ominous until the imagery changes. reflected in the mirrors is the darkness of a cave that's in the beginnings of collapse, and the picture of stahn and a group of others rushing towards an elevator. in the near distance, reflected clearly, is leon magnus, separating himself from the group to a large operation switch. the imagery continues until leon is out of stahn's sights... and it's terrifying.

all stahn can do is let out a quiet, horrified gasp—this is something he relives in his nightmares often enough, but to see it reflected with this kind of clarity in front of him leaves him breathless in a very bad way. he's shaken, enough so that he won't notice if someone else is there to witness the scene; he barely even notices when dymlos is trying to call stahn back to his senses.]

Not a dream?

[he blinks a couple of times—while dymlos is making a slight sound, because he gets the sense that plagg can hear him. which isn't unheard of in cerealia, but still pretty uncommon. it also means he's going to shut up for now unless it becomes necessary for him to say anything.

stahn, on the other hand? slowly getting there. someone is definitely not a morning person here.]

So we're really... underground? [he yawns again, then ruffles his (incredibly disheveled) hair. oh.

hold on, he introduced himself, right?

yeah, okay, stahn can return that gesture.]

I'm Stahn... Stahn Aileron. It's ichetomeeyou... [there is a "nice to meet you" somewhere in that yawn. really.]

Phase III

[Zero walks into the room, stopping in place when he catches sight of the wonderland of mirrors plastered on every surface of the room. His eyes fall on the large glass in front of him where moments later an image begins to shift into place. His head tilts as he makes out an old dungeon just like the ones beneath the Academy. He watches as someone approaches a figure on the ground--- His eyes widen as he recognizes his brother, and his eyes flick to the claw marks on his side moments before he falls into his arms in the memory.]

......Ichiru.

[His eyes begin to water as his fingertips trace the outline of his younger twin in those last moments. Even with his memories a mess, he remembers what he wanted from him. To take his blood and make them one once more. But he couldn't do it.

Tears slip down his face as he watches the scene unfold. The way he clung to him, begged him not to make him do it. How could he? His own beloved brother? But he could never could deny him anything, let alone his last wish.

The images slowly fade, leaving him with the bitter-sweet memory of his brother. If someone is there, he won't notice, not for a long time.]

Bonus

[His dark grey mask carries bloody fingertips, a disturbing sight he's grown used to. However, over the course of his time here, Zero doesn't realize just how much the color of his mask has affected him, not until he accidentally steps on a bug. Somewhere in his mind, a metaphorical switch is turned on throwing his emotional meter out of whack. Anyone passing by can spot a very devastated Zero quietly grieving on the ground over a dead bug in his hands.]

I think you're the one that doesn't understand, Leon.

[his says, and his tone is muted—but it's definitely case because he's trying his best to stay calm. whether it's to keep anger at bay or to keep himself from breaking down into despairing tears.]

It's not pointless. You're here, you're alive, and that matters. I can't watch it again! I can't... I can't stand there and watch something else happen to you if I can help it. Don't you get it, Leon!?

[don't he get how much it hurts stahn? how much pain he has to go through every time he remembers the feeling of that lift going up while leon remained? how he had to hear the sounds of the water rushing into the cavern while he was powerless to do anything? that he had to watch leon resign himself to death as some kind of penance that nobody ever wanted from him?

it haunts stahn every single day, and right now... it's worse than usual. because the mirrors reflected it so clearly, and that cropping up in his head just makes his hands tremble.]

It... could've killed you. I can't—[his head dips so that his hair covers his face, and his clenches his jaw tight.

stahn's still a crybaby, no doubt. of course, he can't even finish what he was saying, which is pretty simply put "I can't watch you die again."

he's had enough trauma already, hasn't he?]

[ whoops. with the sword silencing and stahn... maybe waking up sometime in the next century, plagg figures he should make himself more scarce. there's silence, and then he disappears completely beneath adrien's hair.

(and the boy does blink at that, not realizing that they may have slipped in the "keeping the kwami secret" department just yet.) ]

It seems like it... I don't think we should stick around too long, Stahn, so let's go. I can help lead you around while you shake off the rest of that sleepiness. [ pfft. okay. he'll approach stahn a little bit then, and maybe he shouldn't, but adrien's taking his wrist to tug him to move gently. #yolosunshinebros don't belong underground with creepy... creatures.... in the background. ] Ichetomeeyou too, by the way.

[In a lot of ways, he's been tiptoeing around this problem. In a lot of ways, Leon hasn't been ready for this confrontation.

But he's just as worn as Stahn now. Reliving all of that, even in just a mirror, had been exhausting, and he still feels ragged. On top of the monster, and the fear of seeing Stahn throw himself in front of him for that, and get injured because of it... he can't handle this anymore.

He can't keep it to himself anymore.]

Yes. It could have. [His voice is cold, and sharp, and unyielding.]

And what then? I would have been dead. [So what. He already is. He doesn't care.] And if that monster had killed you? What would our world have done? There is no one else who can wield Dymlos. There is no one else who can stop Hugo with the others.

[His fists are clenched, teeth grit together, even as he stares Stahn down fiercely, because this--is how he feels.]
