[open] this ae night, this ae night
Who: People who went to the tower, and then people who want to hear about what happened in the tower!
When: 8/25-8/26.
Where: The CERES Tower, and then the Sanctuary
What: A catch-all log for the CERES Tower Exploration, and then a discussion of it!
Rating/Warning: Will edit when needed.
THE TOWER
[ As per the mod post:
All groups will find that the tower is deserted, and all technology is shut off. Through some fiddling, some of CERES’ databases can be accessed, but only in the most basic of safe modes. Hacking will just get everything to shut off again, as it takes too much power from whatever emergency power source allows the systems to turn on.
There are no dangers, but even so, the characters won’t have long in the tower before their code starts to warp strangely. If they stay too long, they will be glitched right out of existence -- and then right outside of the tower. They will find that for the next three ic days, all food tastes burnt and sleeping is extremely unsatisfying, to the point that they don’t even feel like they need it, before they go back to normal. Characters will have a maximum of 3 IC hours in the tower before that point.
Feel free to thread out characters meeting up before the exploration, or bumping into each other in the rather big tower, amongst other shenanigans! ]
THE SANCTUARY
[ there isn't much of a preparation for this, but there will be a text blast alerting everybody to go to the sanctuary if they so please to discuss what people have found in the tower.
as usual, a variety of flavours of pizza is being served. there may not be pizza for everybody however, as athena is rather broke. (sweats) remember to leave your cerevices in the basket by the entrance! ]

Visiting most of them made me feel better the first time... Occidi-sama didn't say anything, but her shrine left a nice feeling. Same with Aredo-sama.
[ there's that whole joke that she's claimed by Maris, doesn't know it, and has gained approximately "he eats what I leave as offerings" which feels like satisfaction (but is not a blessing) (other than not being eaten, she supposes). ]
It was the first time when I met them that Maris-sama was talking about how he wants us all gone. I didn't really understand what people meant about being claimed when it sounds like he gave up in helping after we couldn't live out in the jungle. Um! But I did get to ask him if he could sense CERES, and he said he couldn't. Not right now, not ever. Maris-sama could never sense them at all.
no subject
I had a feeling it might be so. No wonder they couldn't even rescue their own kind from CERES without our help. [harrumph] Maris would get his wish a lot faster if he would actually help, but that implies that they can. I'm willing to guess at this point that they don't have any way of sending us home.

We belong to CERES in a way. We're here because of them, and not because we're... called by the spirits. They don't have much power here in this city. Cerealia is hard on Tellus. That's the feeling I get, when talking with them. I don't know if it's just the contract or if it's something else CERES does.
[ She's honest in that there's way more she doesn't know than she does. Her hands fist into her shirt for want of anything else to do, held tight at about the level of her stomach. She wants to have a better sense of things. ]
Maris-sama didn't answer when I asked what reason any spirit here would have for sacrificing people like us on their altar, though.

Someday, Cao Pi would have children - sons to carry on his legacy and daughters to shine like gems, like their beautiful mother - but he hadn't, yet. But his own experiences at his father's knee made him treat other children more like short adults. At least, Chihiro seemed to be handling herself pretty well, he's impressed.]
You haven't given me your name yet, young one.
no subject
I'm sorry! I'm Chihiro Ogino, sir. It's nice to meet you!
[ this part said as she straightens up again. argh! she'd been doing better with this! ]
no subject
It sounds as though you hail from Wa, like many people here. It is a country across the sea from mine.
no subject
[ she smiles a little in return. it's not a familiar name to her, but she's also... well. headached and a bit mentally overtaxed the last few weeks. ]
Mm, I'm from Japan. Or Nippon. I hadn't really realised how many of us are from some version of my home, though we're all from different times.
[ Though with him mentioning location...! ]
West across the sea we have both China and Korea. Further up there's Russia, too.
[ she falls silent then, realising she's really close to rambling on geography, of all things. ]
no subject
China is what modern people call my country, yes. Miss...Chihiro, is it, then? You have already told me more than I was able to get from anyone else.
no subject
I'm glad that it's helpful. It's something I can do. It feels worth doing to keep trying.
[ she brushes some of her hair back off her cheek, for all the good it does her. ]
no subject
[if Cao Pi can motivate kids, he can motivate anyone]
no subject
Yes. Though... do you think the spirits are all aware of what the Bridge does? While supporting the Bridge?
[ she vaguely thinks that Athena's write up had mentioned that Occidi didn't appear to know but... ]
no subject
[he viewed them like noblemen clustered around the emperor, all dealing with their own lands and people and concerning themselves with the petty squabbles of who was laying claim to whose castle this week, all while the emperor was busy signing death warrants and enslaving the weak to work on his tombs and temples with no one to gainsay him. But that metaphor, he figured, might be over Chihiro's head. Either way, it could turn out to be the sort of situation where someone versed in political diplomacy could play them off each other. If the Bridge was the one who could send them back home but wouldn't because she preferred to feed off their spiritual energy, they were going to be in real trouble.]
no subject
Mm... then I hope Occidi-sama will have reason to listen to us soon. If only so we know where she stands, too. Or where any of them do. Caeli-sama is more distractable than the others, I think, but I don't know any more what they think than how the rest do. Other than understanding when people want intruders in their home to leave. Even if we didn't ask to be here, we're tied to the ones who've made a big mess of everything here...
[ she breathes in and out on a count of three. no lie, this makes her headache worse. ]
Sir, do you think we're considered full people on our own? Other than to each other.
[ to anyone else? the Flamines? the spirits? or are they just assets or liabilities attached to CERES? ]
no subject
I am not sure I can answer that, little one. I've been wondering if...we are actually real, or if we are creations of our masters, carrying false memories of people once named Cao Pi or Chihiro or...well. No, perhaps that's too grim to even think right now.
If the others could understand that we are just as much victims of CERES' meddling as they are, perhaps they would understand that it benefits all of us to work together. If Maris wants us to go away, he should help make it so, not sit back and sigh and grumble that we haven't just up and vanished of our own accord.
no subject
We're real. [ confidence in that statement. ] What kind of real that is I'm not sure about, but we're real. We exist.
[ that's real enough for her. they're not 'original,' in the sense that she understands it; she's still her, he's still him, but there were others of them. there were other bodies... other times and places they've existed. spirits of humans crossed over, leaving their physical bodies behind. they weren't less real. just changed.
in a way, that's how she thinks of them here, only with no real benefit of being in a place where death isn't still a possibility. a strong one. ]
They're our important memories. Even if we're not the only selves who've carried them, all the new ones are just ours. We're real.
[ she straightens up. ]
I feel Maris-sama doesn't know an answer, so he just says what he wants, and knows no way of making it happen. It's easy to say a thing and not need to act on it if we say, "We can't." Figuring out what makes them say, "We will anyway" feels like it's important.
[ saving her parents was nigh on impossible, begging for work had been frightening and necessary, confronting yubaba's powerful twin to apologise for a dying dragon... there are many difficult, incredible, hard to understand challenges in life. they're still ones that need to be tackled, to whatever end. ]
no subject
Anyway, he decides to focus on practical matters rather than philosophy.]
Yes, I'm inclined to think that of the four, Maris is the last one I would go to for assistance. That kind of apathy requires time and patience to overcome, two things we don't have right now. From other reports, it sounds as though Ardeo may be our best bet for cooperation.
no subject
Ardeo-sama isn't patient. Not unless he feels like being patient, I think. That may be good to keep in mind. Kashuu-san has talked with him several times, so you might want to ask him how that's been, too.
no subject
[he shouldn't be surprised, Kashuu is super-friendly with everyone]
no subject
He's my friend.
[ she is SO MUCH MORE CONFIDENT IN HIS (debatable) SKILLS THAN SHE SHOULD BE BUT UH that's part of a learning curve where individuals are concerned ]
no subject
He seems to have a knack for getting to know...anyone, really.
[not that she'd know but it's a high sign of the sword-spirit's talents that he's managed to befriend Cao Pi of all people]
no subject
[ compared to being on his own, that is. UNLIKE MARIS no who knows. she has total faith in Kashuu's ability to befriend. ]
That reminds me, though. Aredo-sama and Caeli-sama both said CERES isn't gone, because we're not vanished? I'm not sure if they meant the same for the colony or not... but that's what I think they were saying.
[ it was hard to tell because fox and cloud were a bit ambiguous??? ]
no subject
Cao Pi's face goes blank while he considers it. Logically, that would make some sense. If CERES brought them, perhaps CERES was in fact the only party with the means to get rid of them. If they were in fact valuable energy generators, just dumping them and running made no sense. Then again, the third option of being somehow physically tied to the presence of the company puts a bad taste in his mouth.]
I see. I wonder if that means they would have taken us with them if they decided to abandon the colony...or something far more unpleasant.
no subject
[ She means is it mobile; she just... isn't sure how to ask that. Though she does have one other question. ]
Sir, do you know how it is that people like us might die here but be not-dead?
no subject
[a deep breath] I have seen it happen. People said to have died, or witnessed dying, returning a few days later. I am unsure how that could be, but I am certain it, too, is tied to the technology. There are objects inside our bodies which tie us to CERES, which they have been using to collect information on us - the very reason we meet here, where they cannot see or hear what we do. Perhaps that has something to do with it.
no subject
Her head doesn't like that any better than it's like much of anything the last few (weeks I guess) days. ]
I don't like the idea of all of that... but people tell me it's true. It's wrong, but it's true. So if we can be... if we can come back, if CERES ran off with our information... they wouldn't need us. They could always make us again, couldn't they? Like back-up CDs and stuff.
