A compound bow is a bow that uses a system of cables and pullys to add to the draw strength. The major benefit of a compound bow is that while it may be difficult to draw, once you've fully drawn it back, it takes almost no effort to hold it there. In short, it gives you as much time as you need to aim your shot and you won't get tired.
