[This was kind of Archer's fault. Namely because he was a lame ass when it came to interpersonal relationships and waited a biiiiiit too long before asking Rin to the ball. Which means he was beaten by the other Servant.

Archer put on the intimidating look as he waited for Saber to come out of her place of work. He wasn't intending on fighting at all but he definitely wanted to set the pace of the upcoming interaction. The quicker Saber gets drawn into the tune he sings, the faster the conversation will go. Real life 101 that would never actually cut it in polite conversation.

So when she did step out...]

...don your armor, Saber.

[Because he was certainly leaking the intent to be aggressive. Albeit intentionally. That would change shortly enough.]

[ Saber's never seen Archer at her job like this before. It makes her worry that he just has shown up like this, looking as he does. And his command makes her more worried. About Rin, obviously, and not Archer.

...And if it's something to do with Rin she has little excuse not to do so. In a blue flash of light the girl in the winter jacket turns into the knight, her armor almost sparkling as the unleashed wind pressure dies down. ]

Speak plainly. What has happened, Archer?

What has happened is this. I'm challenging you to a duel, Saber, with whatever shred of honor I have left.

[So she can stop worrying about Rin. Archer has yet to arm himself and he's always wearing his armor so that hasn't changed at all.]

[ Saber looks sternly at Archer, reaching for the hilt of her invisible blade, even though she knows full well that Archer knows it's true identity and power. ]

Even if I were to believe you have honor left to challenge me with, for what reason do you wish to fight?

[ It's got to be Rin. It has to be. This isn't exactly what Saber wants though. But if she's challenged, even by an dishonorable man as Archer, she will fight. She only hopes Rin will be able to understand why she had to afterwards... ]

Looking at your eyes, I can tell you already know the answer.

[Everyone knows how much he hates explaining things. Even in a serious situation.]

But put your blade away. Would it really be honorable for you to sword-fight with someone who clearly isn't your equal? No, we'll find another way to settle this.

It is Rin then. And accompanying her to the ball.

[ She has to speak it, because that's what Knights do. They speak plainly, they make grievances known before fighting. Because if it's not an honorable cause then there is no reason to fight. ]

So you wish to choose a competition where you instead have the upper hand?

[swordboning]

I'm going to spell this out for you. I have no want or need to take your place. We're going to be taking her to the ball together. Removing you would only hurt Rin and you going along with her without me would only be the same.

[That wasn't the point of being here. He already knew he was going to get what he wanted. The point lay in salving Saber's ego and fulfilling on a promise he had made previously.]

So there's only one unresolved aspect. Namely, I'm going to force you to recognize me. Being the brute that you are, there's only one way to get that done. With a duel in a situation where we're both equals.

Together? [ Saber looks...well she doesn't actually look upset with that idea so much. Because if she were home, with Rin and Shirou, she would have expected such an arrangement. And it was something she was looking to discuss with Archer though apparently he didn't want to talk about it!!

But she lets him speak, not interjecting, only replying once he's done, her sword now away...though it's invisible so who knows. ]

I do not see how you expect respect from me when you insult me so. ...And any duel will be on my terms, as to whether I agree or not.

[Yep, together. He wasn't going to take any other answer simply because he's that stubborn. Plus he was fairly sure Rin wouldn't accept anything other than that in the end anyway.]

The duels will be on our terms. And yes, I said 'duels'. You'll pick one and I'll pick one that we both agree to. That way, neither of us feels as if we've been cheated.

[ Saber would like to say that's okay.... but it's true she can't admit it as things are now. ]

And what will you choose as your own duel?

A simple drinking game.

[Saber can put away the pounds because of high metabolism and magic use, certainly. That also would mean she got drunk faster, right?]

[ Saber narrows her eyes. She's not sure... that's the best challenge, but they are likely equal, or at least, neither have an unfair advantage. ]

I accept then.

[ And then for her own... ]

Mine will be a game. At the arcade.

[Archer inwardly grimaces. He hates video games.

On the other hand, there's no way Saber could ever have more experience with them than him considering their disparate time periods so rejecting that claim would be dumb.]

Fine. We'll do yours first.

[ Saber doesn't like them much more, but she's seen agility and strength based ones, instead of little controls, and she likes the idea of them! Even if she never really set foot on a DDR machine she's watched people play before! ]

And what do you expect if I lost? [ She won't lose, but she will put it out there. ]

Should I expect something?

[Nope, he has none. Nor does he plan to gloat. That's too overt for Mister Jerkbag. Everything must be subtle.]

If you are challenging me, then you must have some condition that I will fulfill if I lose.

[ Archer this is how duels are supposed to go. ]

You don't need a condition for a challenge. Otherwise, even the smallest questions will turn into battles of will.

[Come on, Saber.]

[ Apparently if she loses then they both go with Rin. And that seems fair to Saber, though she does not plan to lose. Though what happens if they both lose?

Already Saber is going to start walking then, if Archer wishes for it to begin already! ]

[Let's go. Let's do this.

[ Wow, making Homestuck jokes in action spam tags, who are you?

Given that Saber walks fast, it doesn't take long to end up at the arcade, surrounded by the lights and noises and fake gun shots filling the large room. And there, in the middle, is the Dance Dance Evolution game, with two spots free. ]

I have seen others playing that one. That will be my challenge to you.

A dancing competition, huh? Fine. I do hope you're ready to be beaten.

I think you do. You didn't grow up in the era of video games so you know that you have a disadvantage.

[ She looks at him a little questioningly. ]
