["Homesick" probably isn't the right word to use in this situation, or the right word to use when applied to Kaoru at all, but the pull of tradition is pretty strong. It's much nicer celebrating the coming of the new year in a way that's vaguely familiar, even if the tradition itself has shifted over the years.
