Who: [personal profile] cardboard_journalism & the people around her
When: January 10th, morning
Where: Different places around Cerealia!
What: Myriam Scuttlebutt's newspaper, 2nd edition!
Rating/Warning: (possibly some PG content?)

[ January 10th, one week from its launch meant that her weekly publication, The Cerealia Times, was due for a new edition. Now with a staff of five people (some more reluctant than others), the paper was getting bigger, better, and hopefully more widely-circulated. Editing was done. Formats were planned out. Newsprint and ink had met in glorious harmony. It was time to distribute the paper! Here's the news! ]

A. OTA

[ Myriam Scuttlebutt, wearing her cardboard box, carries a stack of bundles of Cerealia Times in a cardboard box on a hand-truck and tries to convince businesses (especially cafes!) to set them out for people to take, free of charge. Maybe you're a worker she's trying to persuade? She will definitely be coming around to any business that accepted them last week! ]

B. OTA

[ Myriam Scuttlebutt, wearing her cardboard box, sits behind a register at the School Supply Store she works at. She rings people up blandly and then excitedly offers a copy of the paper with their purchase. ]

C. Either/or!

[ No interaction with Scuttlebutt herself, just read the paper and post your own reaction wherever they may be! Maybe leave her a comment on her inbox or go track her down to complain with another prompt. The paper can definitely be found in The Little Sister cosplay cafe, Archer's food-stand, and the Opera House. ]

D. Semi-open

[ Myriam called her fellow journalists Leia Rolando [personal profile] journaler and Inaba Himeko [personal profile] dereban for a celebratory brunch at a local cafe. She handed them their very own copies to admire. ]

"Here's our second edition! No one can say our paper hasn't been consistent, now! Order whatever you two like, it's on me! Sss, sss, sss!"

[ It looks, feels, and smells, like a newspaper, and the top above-the-fold part of the paper reads as follows ]

"Largest and best paper in Cerealia."

Date: January 10th, ? year. Price: Free

15 MINUTES OF FAME. FLASH MOB DESCENDS ON CEREALIA!
byline: Leia Rolando
Cerealia saw a wave of new faces yesterday as everyone on the streets was once again ushered onto a bus bound for an unknown location. This time, it's the convention center, where CERESCON was held not long ago--but before arriving, the new and old alike were treated to a tour of the colony. At the same time, citizens were urged to board, being promised free lunch and dinner for their cooperation during this photoshoot memorial event. Their pictures would be taken and made into merchandise--keychains, notebooks, trinkets and more.

If only they knew about "consent" and "contracts."

Their promises didn't end there, either. Both make-up artists and fashion designers took to the scene, promising royalties on all products sold to the person whose face appears on them, while giving very little choice on participation. Those who opted to leave were followed out in desperation, likely having their pictures taken anyway.

Photographers on site were equally enthusiastic and invasive. Multiple reports say some appeared to take on the appearance of cats--however, no pictures exist to prove this claim, as the appearance was said to only last a moment.

Was it a trick of the light, or perhaps something in the air that caused these short-lived hallucinations? What is the purpose of treating citizens of the colony as celebrities, and could it be tied to some deeper, darker secret?

Whatever answers lie ahead, new arrivals are sure not to forget this red-carpet introduction!

[ The below-the-fold story reads:

"Medical center overflows with persons affected by 'strange' camera-inflicted illness!" byline Inaba Himeko. Paired with the top article it reports about the cameras in the event and that those who stared directly into the lens were rendered unconscious. It's written in Inaba's personal style.

Another story below-the-fold reads:

"Young man uses newspaper to clean up spill!" byline Myriam Scuttlebutt.

"Tragedy was averted yesterday morning when a local newcomer identified as 'Jungo' used a copy of The Cerealia Times to wipe up a spill of an unidentified substance which had fallen on the ground in a high-traffic area. The young man humbly denied that he was motivated by heroism and was quoted as saying he mopped up the spill because "Someone could have slipped and hurt themselves."

Doesn't this young man deserve a medal? It is the duty of all persons relocated to show civic responsibility such as this! Together we can keep Cerealia safe!"

There's a picture of this man cleaning up a spill with a newspaper.]

[ Next page is Local News. The top story:

"New people warned to avoid local jerk!" byline Myriam Scuttlebutt

"A Local Jerk continues his same inconsiderate behavior he's shown others, the same as the week before. He's identified by those most unfortunate enough to be around him as "Archer," IF THAT IS HIS REAL NAME, which it probably isn't because it sounds super-fake. He also has made pretentious claims such as being a blacksmith, and a time-traveler. All new locals are highly advised to avoid him. He can be identified by his white hair, contrasting with a darker complexion, and the fact he has absolutely no shame. His hobbies include impersonating teenage girls for fun. He should be considered armed, but possibly not dangerous. When asked to explain his behavior, he had this quote to offer the Times: "I am surrounded by idiots." We at The Cerealia Times think that speaks for itself.

He operates a food cart from which absolutely no one should eat, even if he offers it for free. It's possible that if you look up from this paper you TOO will find yourself looking at the person who is known as the Local Jerk. If so, we at The Cerealia Times offer you our deepest sympathies." ]

[ Next story is "Science and Technology - an interview with Aura Blackquill" byline Myriam Scuttlebutt, and it contains an article related to [personal profile] roboticists.

"This week, this reporter had the chance to sit down with Miss Aura Blackquill, a former lead roboticist for the Cosmos Space Center before relocating to Cerealia and becoming a HoloGM programmer. Read her answers to the startling questions YOU need to know!

Q: "Compared to the technological levels we know from 2027 Los Angeles, how advanced is the technology here?"

A: "The technology here is far more advanced. We're in a colony in space! We barely began breaching the orbit of our own Earth! They've found a way to sustain life in an environment which has nothing to do with the environment of the actual planet we're based on."

Q: "Does this include anything we would have found theoretically impossible?"

A: "This entire colony is founded on impossibility. But I suppose, if I had to give an example - I'd wager having Artificial Intelligences work the way they do here would have been seen as impossible back in our world."

Q: "What would be the worst case scenario for a malfunction from any of the technology we are used to in Cerealia?"

A: "We die."

Apocalypse in the making?! Not a question of 'what' but 'when'?! Whatever may happen, The Cerealia Times will be there!

This interview was conducted with Miss Aura Blackquill via scary robot."

There is a picture of Clonco like this: ]

[ "Weather: Probably colder. Air quality: not-the-best." ]

[ Next page has a photo of this person, the headline reads: "MASKED SUPER-HERO EMERGES?" byline Myriam Scuttlebutt.

"It is clear Cerealia's relocated inhabitants are not willing to sit still and accept a lawless situation as a newcomer who announced himself as "Galactic Patrolman" swore he would do his part to help, in his words: "keep the peace."

Time will tell if he will honor his pledge, but the real question is: why is it necessary to have a masked crusader in the first place? The criminal justice system must be expanded to accommodate all crimes and provide the justice the people need and deserve!

However, outlooks aren't positive. Local worker with the police Miles Edgeworth has gone on record saying: "CERES [regularly] demonstrates how much it knows about us and how little it cares for our well-being in this colony."

When asked what he would like improved, he was quoted as saying: "I would say accountability and transparency are important, considering how many incidents have happened and they've done nothing but toss us baubles and send us on our way when we demand better explanations."

The Cerealia Times cannot condone vigilantism, but clearly the people demand SOME action on behalf of CERES. We call on CERES to go on record with The Cerealia Times as to what future changes they expect to implement." ]

[ There's a section titled: "MUSIC". In it, space has been allocated to Jakuzure Nonon. A photo of her conducting is here.

The article, byline Nonon Jakuzure, introduces itself as a weekly piece dedicated to exposing more people to the beauty and relevance of classical music and is written in Nonon's high-handed style. This week is an article about Ludwig van Beethoven, the most influential composer who ever lived. Several pieces (fifth symphony, ninth symphony) are suggested listening and there's a note that these will be played at concerts at the Opera House, mentioning Nonon confers a discount. ]

[ Immediate next page has a story with the headline: "Fight breaks out in cafe between Nonon Jakuzure and Ryuko Matoi! Just one in a long trend!" byline Myriam Scuttlebutt.

"Nonon Jakuzure and Ryuko Matoi were seen having a brief fight at a local cafe. The fight was clearly one-sided as Ryuko overpowered Nonon and dragged her along the floor "like a caveman," according to one witness who spoke under condition of anonymity. The situation eventually de-escalated and both were soon seen talking in a calm manner. Nonon Jakuzure has reported Ryuko apologized, bringing a resounding conclusion to the violent outburst. Both Nonon and Ryuko have been relocated to Cerealia from the same world and adjusting to daily life here has been "...weird." to quote Nonon. Ryuko is reportedly a delinquent at the school which Nonon attended as a member of the 'Elite Four' which served the Student Council President, Ryuko's sister, Satsuki. They have reportedly tangled before, to the point of uniform shredding. Could jealousy be a motivator? We at the Cerealia Times will watch for further outbreaks of violence involving these two to see if they can finally bury the metaphorical hatchet." ]

[ Next section is labeled: "Letters to the Editor" ]

[ There is a letter which states, in sincere, passionate writing style, that one Rock Lee attempted without realizing what he was doing to suppress the freedom of the press by harassing local journalist Myriam Scuttlebutt. He takes full responsibility for his actions, admits wrongdoing, and sincerely apologizes to The Cerealia Times, Myriam Scuttlebutt, and the free press as a whole. It is signed with his name with a note that it was verified as originating from him by the editor. ]

[ There is a response:

"We at The Cerealia Times hold one truth to be self evident: a free press is the only kind of press worth having. In places where the free press is strong, the freedom of the people is strong. This includes journalists being able to accomplish their jobs free of harassment. We recognize Mr. Rock Lee's motivations were pure even if his actions were not and humbly accept his apology. Complaints about the Cerealia Times or the actions of its journalists should be addressed through written letters to the editor and not through personal harassment of those journalists. We sincerely hope Mr. Rock Lee's actions are an anomaly never repeated and the freedom of the press will remain paramount to life in Cerealia. We at the Cerealia Times will continue to strive to shine a light in the darkness and bring a voice to the voiceless, the responsibility of all journalists.

-Editor, Myriam Scuttlebutt." ]

[ The next section is titled:

"GOSSIP"

It reads as follows:

"Hello Cerealia Denizens! We’re back to wet your palettes! Let’s not waste more time!

Wanted: Someone to handle this wild mare!

Name: Sir Integra Hellsing
Gender: Female??
Interests: Being better than you!
Disinterests: Loud youth!

The reward for finding her a three month long relationship is 300 Credits! Pictures or it didn’t happen!

Moving onto developing news, it seems that Miss Ryuko has become a hot commodity! While she’s roughhousing with Nonon in a cafe with abandon, another contender has entered the ring! Nui Harime has laid her claim upon the girl with questionable hair styles and nothing, not even Nonon, will stand in her way! Who will come out on top?!

Rock Lee Strikes Again! This time, our Romeo is using cute, adorable squirrels to bring all the females to his lawn! It’s a great idea! More men should follow his example! Far better than running down love interests!

Speaking of which, throwing dinosaurs seems to be the way to meet hot guys! Athena Cykes has totally fallen head over talons for Leon Kuwata! No one can deny that terrible soul patch, dreamy eyes, and gruff personality! Which is more lethal, Athena or his good looks?!

Here is a SPECIAL ALERT! Citizens beware! There are burglars living amongst us! Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey break into an apartment! What are they stealing?! What about that poor victim?! Shouldn’t the police do something?! Hide your family jewels!

Until next time!

Miss Tattler"

[ Next page is dedicated to "Missing Persons" and reads as follows:

"An unverified person styling themselves "Lord" Cain C. Hargreaves is searching for his butler, a mister Riff Raffit. He is described as "quite tall, broad-shouldered, with fair hair and blue eyes, probably wearing a well-pressed suit in blue or gray. He's left-handed, strongly built and maddeningly altruistic."

Riff Raffit is of such reportedly high character he is likely to be seen "...rescuing a kitten from a tree, aiding a gentlewoman with her garden or teaching underprivileged children how to box." Any reports should be addressed to "Lord" Cain C. Hargreaves. No reward has been offered for this information. Mr. Hargreaves has expressed that as his employer, he is considering docking Mr. Raffit's paycheck."

"Friends are searching for beloved pillar of the community Apollo Justice, pictured here: . Mr. Justice has been missing since yesterday morning and various persons are just worried sick about him. Please report all information to Athena Cykes." ]

[ At Archer's foodstand for lunch, Pearl spots the paper. How exciting! This time Pearl doesn't even pretend to read the actual news articles before skipping to the gossip section. She's tutting over Sir Integra and how someone should date her when she spots the name of two of her favorite people, gasping.

Has someone else finally spotted Mystic Maya and Mr Nick's love...? (She also spots the bit about Athena, but sorry friend there are more urgent matters to get in a tizzy about.) ]

"Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey break into an apartment..." What! This is a lie, Mystic Maya and Mr Nick aren't burglars! How can they print something like this!

[ Throwing down her own copy on a bench, she throws herself at the stack of copies, pulling out a pen. ] These all need to be fixed! I can't let people believe these lies!

[ That's right, she's going through the stack and crossing out parts. Now some of the papers read that Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey are wonderful, good people in pen. She also adds a note to the part about Sir Integra saying she's very pretty and likes Russian books while she's at it.

She will fix every single paper in Cerealia or run out of pens trying. ]

Hey, lady in the... box. [ what ] Do you pay well? Also, this paper reads like an over the top work of fiction. I hardly believe anything in it is true.

C - Open to Anyone

[ Nonon's opening night came and went, and she picked up the next copy of Myriam's newspaper, already certain she's not going to like what she sees. Stupidly, she went and talked to Myriam about more of her issues with Ryuko, and can hardly be surprised to see that story in there. She's proud of her own column, right above that, hoping people just assume that Ryuko is the weird one or something.

But it's the gossip column again that has her eyebrow twitching in anger. Or maybe it's something else. Her relationship with Ryuko has been feeling like it's changing, and these stupid gossip columns aren't making it any easier for her to figure out. ]

I'm going to find this Miss Tattler and blow her eardrums out! [ She's in her usual spot, the same cafe Ryuko had dragged her around in, uncaring that she's causing another minor scene.

Or run into her anywhere else to discuss her column, her performance, her love life! ]

Maybe, to your surprise, you'll find that relationships aren't a zero-sum game. I'm aware a lot of people dislike me but put up with me because I bring more to the table than I take away. As long as they don't rely on me, I don't care what they think.
