Shopping District

[So. Things are still super weird. Everything about this colony and everything he’s learned over the last couple of days has been very strange to him, not to mention stressful.

Initially when he woke up a few days later shivering he had assumed maybe he was sick. Not that that had mattered. He burrowed further in his blankets and that was that…except that it wasn’t. Everything felt cold, even Baymax activating his internal heater did nothing for him.

So he left. He took off, taking his robot on the train with him and headed for the shopping district. Over the course of the day he’s wandering with Baymax, occasionally burying himself further and further into piles of clothing. Sorry if he startles you by being there.

On the other hand, taking Baymax anywhere is always a hassle. When Hiro’s not trying to warm up, he’s chasing after the robot, occasionally bumping into people.]

Baymax! Wait! [Baymax might not be fast, but it’s easy to get separated from him. Heads up, he’s not at all watching where he’s running. He might just run right into you…or through you. Or through a building. Well that’s not normal, is it? Who knows where he’ll end up.]

CERES Game Center

[Being nearly invisible is kinda bad. He’s almost completely faded by the time he makes his way to the CERES game center with Baymax at his side. The robot and invisible-boy are blocking the entrance to ViViD today due to the fact that Hiro’s sitting just outside of it scowling at it, moving around the system to try and figure it out without going inside. If he sees someone passing by though or even approaching to play, he’ll catch their attention, trying to grab them by the arm and phasing right through.]

[ just remembering it makes her a bit mad. if hiro's observant enough, he might notice that her necklace's display changes from a sky blue :) to a red >:( face. ]

There were blades all over the tracks and the sides of the rollercoaster, we got cuts all over if we didn't duck or hide ourselves in our seats.

But, I wouldn't worry about the park, now. It's safe now.

[He sure does notice, and he wants to ask...but it'll have to wait a few minutes. Why doesn't he remember this? Why doesn't he remember some killer rollercoaster? How did Baymax survive without being popped?]

They really like pushing limits around here, don't they. [He shakes his head.] ...sorry, I don't remember any of that. Think I'll avoid the park for a while anyway.

You've been here a while? What else can you tell me about this place? ["What else can you tell me about when I was here" is partially what he means.]

It's okay if you don't. I mean, I don't recall you being around here for long, anyway. . .

[ she looks away as she starts poking at her moon earring. ] Come to think of it... I think you really just came in here, stay for a few days, and left. Your code got corrupted so fast.

I hope you get to stay here longer now, though! Your robot's just so cute!

[ did hiro want information... sorry, she's distracted right now. . . good going, lawyer. ]

Thanks for that reassurance. [Flatly. Oh so flatly. The idea of his code being corrupted is a little unnerving and something he'll probably want to ask Tadashi about. Or maybe that guy Tadashi had mentioned. Bellona's assistant.

Of course, he's distracted when Athena's distracted and there's a mildly proud look up at Baymax.] But yeah, I guess he is. His original creator designed him to make him more approachable.

My huggable design makes me a better healthcare companion. [And Baymax sounds so proud of that, too.] Hiro has upgraded me to be an even better companion.

[...Baymax, let's not tell the nice stranger all of our secrets, okay? Hiro rubs the back of his neck, eyes still drifting back to Athena's necklace to see if he can figure that out even while he's talking to her.] You know anything about robotics?

Do I?! [ that question totally gets her excited, and her necklace turns from its default sky blue display to a green :D face. ]

I don't! [ she says proudly. why did she even bother getting all excited, then??? ] but I grew up with robots. So they're like family to me.

[What the hell is going on here. He almost wants to facepalm because that's...not quite the answer he was looking for, but hey.]

Baymax is pretty much my best friend...he's family to me, too. A lot of people around here aren't really sure what to think of him though, huh, buddy? [He grins up at Baymax, not really waiting for an answer.]

But that means you've gotta be from a place with some pretty advanced tech, right?

I guess we're pretty advanced! It's the year 2027 where I'm from, anyway.

[ she nods at baymax, smile unfaltering. ] I think it's nice that he's around. He's a nurse, right? I work at the medical facility certain days of the week. The nurses there are mostly robots, too.

[Advanced enough, he thinks, and there's a large actually excited grin following.] Yeah? It's 2032 where I'm from so it's not that far in the past. [It also reminds him of the lady he met inside ViViD with the robot who'd said she was from that same year.]

I was really glad to see him after we got out of that hospital though. He's mostly a nursebot. [Mostly.] Let me guess though, the doctors are actually aliens. too? What kind of bots?

We have some doctors who are just like us, [ she says, and a hand rests on her hip. ] If I had gone to medical school, I'd totally be working as a doctor there, too. But right now, I'm just a psychologist. Lots of research for me!

[ she's so eager about it. nerd hiro, meet enthusiastic nerd athena. ]

And the robots are just... androids? I don't think there's anything special with them. But they can feel certain emotions, and they look like humans. It's pretty tough to figure out if one's a robot or a human in that place, to be honest.

A psychologist. [He's a little more wary of that just out of his slightly distrusting nature, but it quickly passes. Research is something he understands perfectly fine and he doesn't seem to have trouble grasping what she's saying.] Definitely a different kind of doctor.

I might have to check out these droids then if they're that lifelike. Baymax obvious doesn't look human, but he feels certain things. [Or so Hiro thinks.] ...speaking of emotions. [He looks back at Athena's necklace.] What's going on with that thing?

Oh, you mean Widget?

[ she loves talking about her own tech and robots, so she perks up when hiro notices it. in fact, widget's display changes to green again. ]

He's an AI my mom made. Say hello, Widget!

[ a squeaky feminine automated voice speaks: ]

He talks. [Good job, Hiro, glad that's been established. The fact that it's talking and changing though is fascinating and there's a "wow" under his breath as he watches.] Hello, Widget. [He grins.] What does he do? Besides changes colors for whatever reason.

He's like a little computer, but aside from that, I can use the Mood Matrix.

[ Well, ok! Time to activate Widget. She draws a circle in the air before her using her gloved hand, and blue lines follow the trace of her fingers. A smiley face pops up in thin air, and it winks. "Hello Athena", Widget says. And now, there's a 3d display right in front of them that looks like this, except... you know, different text and not navigation links. ]

Do you want to see what it's like?

[Athena, is that a real question? He's just staring, jaw dropping a tiny bit because that sure is some holographic 3D shit right there and that's awesome? A hand moves like he wants to touch the display, but he doesn't quite get there.]

Uh, yes? Absolutely. What is it? How does it work?

[ she clicks on an app and a screen pops up. ]

This is the Mood Matrix. It visualises what emotions you're feeling right now... like. . .

This stupid song keeps bothering me, and I hate it! [ she says it with a lot of passion, and the red emoticon starts blinking wildly. at the center is an image of her trying to sleep on a bed. ]

So it's like a giant, holographic mood ring? [That's basically how he sees it, and it's actually pretty cool (even if he's a little lost on why she needs something like that. He can't judge. It's not like Mochi needed rocket boots.)] Pretty cool.

[...wait a sec though.] Wait, what song?

It's not just a mood ring! [ HOW OFFENSIVE. ] Try lying to me right now.

[ and put any underlying emotions in brackets! ]

And the song about death... I kept hearing it a while back, before we entered that place where they keep corrupted codes.

[WOW IT WASN'T MEANT TO BE OFFENSIVE. He actually holds his hands up in defense, eyes wide.] Lying like...about anything?

[Because that sort of makes him nervous. It's not that he's nervous about lying. He lies to people on a fairly normal basis...lies about where he's going, lies about where he's been, sometimes lies to Aunt Cass about taking apart their appliances for projects...but lying on the spot? It makes him a little anxious and he grins slightly, shaking his head.] Okay. I'm actually Baymax's original creator. [Which. Is like 80% untrue. No seriously, bad at lying on the spot.

Though he's more interested in this death song.] That's the first time I've heard anything about it. [...wait.] And what were you doing there?

[ an image of baymax get displayed in the middle of the screen, and the blue emoticon blinks - though not as wildly as it normally does when athena uses it. so she tilts her head in curiosity. seeing it is one thing, but hearing hiro's emotions at this moment is another. ]

Anxiety...? [ she says it out loud, but it's more like she's talking to herself. she gets distracted by hiro's line of questions. ]

I've got sensitive hearing, so I guess it must have just been me. But people were also experiencing weird things the same time I was... like, some people were feeling so cold and all. [ ugh, just thinking about it makes her mad, and scared. the holographic screen itself is blue now, but it turns red as soon as she mentions it. ]

A lot of people were there - as well as those who used to be here. I'm not sure why, though... And we all thought we were going to end up like them, too. I'm glad we didn't.

[ and the screen turns purplish. ]

[He watches curiously, a little surprised to see Baymax's face appear on the matrix but not entirely skeptical. He mimics Athena's headtilt, not entirely sure what she's looking for…and then she pinpoints his anxiety and there's another spike of it. No? That was not what was supposed to be taken from this (in his humble opinion, anyway.)

But he doesn't acknowledge it if she doesn't either.]

Yeah. Tadashi and I both had the cold thing going on…and phasing out. It's been a really weird couple of days.

[But uh. Athena? That's a little worrying.] You mean the people with corrupted codes? [Also guuurl, your matrix…Baymax is also concerned by the sudden spike in Athena's emotions.] I'm kinda glad nobody else ended up like them, either…but where did they go from there?

[psycholawgy]

[ it was just an example, anyway. and she can tell that hiro's a good guy, so she won't prod further if he doesn't want her to - which she feels might be the right thing to do right now. ]

Tadashi... your older brother, right? I got into a fight with him when he arrived since he bought all the cotton candy for you. [ a pause. ] Sorry - that's... stuff you don't even remember. I'll try not to bring it up. [ and she laughs sheepishly. ]

And yeah, them. The ones with corrupted codes. [ ... she sighs, just remembering how horrible it was of an experience for her. the purple screen doesn't disappear. she's truly sad about this; sad and fearful. ] I think they're still there.

At least, I hope so.

Yeah, that's him. [He shakes his head because that sure sounds like his brother. Spoiling him and getting annoyed when someone tries to say no.] It's okay. I don't mind? It's...kinda interesting to hear about stuff that happened before. Maybe I can figure out where those memories went, see what went wrong with my code.

[He can tell she's upset. Baymax can tell and he frowns suddenly. It's scary to think about, but he's not as scared as he should be. He's actually sort of mad the longer he thinks about it.]

If they're still there, there has to be a way to get back in, fix their codes, and bring them back. CERES has to believe that, too. Why else would they keep them?

They were once restored codes, right?

If CERES is working on restoring them back, then of course they'd keep them... [ that's a theory, anyway. she already knows something about how CERES is an energy-selling corporation... but she hasn't connected the dots yet. ]

And if they're working on restoring them, then they probably wouldn't mind an extra hand from somebody who knows what he's doing, huh? [It's a quip more than a serious suggestion, though he's very much interested in what will happen if he tries to mess with the corrupted codes.] Couldn't hurt to ask.

[psycholawgy]

I dunno about that. [ the pitch of her voice goes higher at "dunno", and drops back to normal afterwards. ] Mr. Mosley said CERES has terribly high standards.

[ though, mosley's not even a college graduate and yet he sits to the right of the CEO. just how contradictory is that? ]
