[ it's another muggy, meandering day in the jungle; nothing seems to be out of the ordinary. ]
IN THE VILLAGE
[ if your character is near the center of the village, they'll bear witness to the curious sight of a herd of shuffling mushroom beasts. in terms of threat level, to the experienced hunter they may have ranked low on the scale: slow, lacking an external fang or claw, they seem to be interested only in their endless march forward.
but, if your character is close enough, they may catch sight of a red-haired young man, a manifesto of anger written across his face. one breathless moment, the calm before the storm, and then he hurls a metallic pair of gloves at the closest beast, the gloves trailing arcs of flame.
what may strike your character first is the searing heat, the thrum of the earth below their feet. the whole village is demolished in a moment, the dying cries of the beasts rising above the din. the explosion lasts much longer than it should, the line of mushrooms going up one after another.
if you're too close, you might be torn in two. you might lose a limb, or two, or three. you might go deaf, you might lose your sight. you might lose all your eyelashes, your clothes. maybe the bag of mushrooms you'd collected for dinner is now little more than ash.
keep running. the smoke trails into the air. someone is screaming. the smell of charred meat follows you even after you disappear into the jungle. ]
IN THE SURROUNDING JUNGLE
[ if your character is close enough to the village, they'll feel the blasts, one after the other. the jungle is on fire, quickly spreading. maybe you'll hear the screaming, too; maybe your lungs will fill with smoke. maybe you'll run into one of the last mushroom beasts, fleeing from the explosion only to trigger a lesser one in the depths of the jungle.
it came from the village, didn't it? maybe someone you love was swept up in the explosion.
if you manage to escape the stampede of terrified jungle beasts (some of which may stop to crunch you up as a quick meal as they dash away from the blast), maybe you can venture closer to see what's happened.
or maybe you should get as far away as possible. ]

open!
Something terrible has happened.]
H-Hey--!
[Rather than run away from it, she'll run towards the fire (if she's not stopped), enduring the heat and the increasing about of smoke and burning debris. If you're running in the opposite direction, she may run right into you, or if you're heading the same way--great!
Feel free to say hi. Don't mind her coughing and sputtering as she tries to pick up her pace to find out exactly what happened. When she gets closer:]
C . . . Can anyone hear me?!
no subject
As a sword, he's meant to protect people and others — so he does want to stand by that rule. Worried that something may happen to the other, he jets after her and there's a quick apology under his breath as he grabs her wrist. That's dangerous is what he thinks and because of that, she shouldn't be going that way? Besides, who is she looking for. ]
You should be more careful, you could become seriously hurt if you go any closer. [ More importantly, he does have to ask just in case her reason of going that far is legitimate. ] Are you looking for someone? [ The uchigatana does loosen his grip on her for just a moment. ] If you are, at least take me with you.. this place is becoming dangerous. [ But why is it is what he wants to know. ]
no subject
No, I'll . . . I'll be okay! Someone has to help!
[ Frantic and yet decisive, Leia won't stop him if he wants to come, too. She had balled her hands into determined fists, but lowers them at his mention of looking for someone.
Should she be? ]
I don't know who was in there or not. I don't know anything.
no subject
Then we can search but please be careful, you want to be the rescuer, not the one being rescued. We have to make sure nothing serious happens to us as well if he want to be capable in helping others.
[ Though as he lets go of her wrist, he gives a nod as if waiting for her cue to go. ] Where should I check, if it comes to searching for others? I could go into the fire if need be, I am a sword and I'll do my best. [ Though fire + sword is normally a no go?? ]
no subject
. . . More importantly-- ]
You're a sword? And you want to help me?
[ Jokingly, she adds with a cheeky growing smile: ]
Do you have any shield friends?
no subject
Shields? Hmmm.. I'm an uchigatana so they can be one of my possible troops. [ Though, he doesn't have one one him unfortunately. ] Maybe whenever I'm able to smith a few of them, I could show you? They technically help me in battle: miniature people! For now, all you have is me, so please allow me to be useful in some way.
no subject
It was just a joke.
I . . . I can't stop you if you want to come. [ Though it sounds like she wants to. ] So just be super careful. I don't know how useful that thing's really going to be, unless we run into more monsters.
[ She eyes his sword. ]

Varying degrees of ash cover his clothes and face, signs that he'd been caught in the fire to a lesser extent than others. The ache in his body from going airborne with the impact feels numb, however, as he looks Leia in the eyes, his own wide and full of naked panic, voice unrestrained.]
Are you hurt, Leia!?
no subject
Is she hurt?
It doesn't matter. She found him again.]
Thomas! [She throws her arms around him. Her own clothes are ashed too; there's no white to be seen and there are dark marks on her face from where you can tell she rubbed or wiped at her sweat. The hug is short-lived, unfortunately, and soon she's scrutinizing him.]
What happened? I looked everywhere . . .
[How did they get separated . . . No, what caused the explosion? She starts coughing again before she can get any answers and doubles over in an attempt to turn away from him for the duration. The smoke is getting worse.]
no subject
The smoke, however, continues to enter their lungs. Turning his grip firm, he rights Leia after her coughing spell and begins to lead them away.]
There was an accident at the village.
It's too dangerous here. We're leaving.
[His hardened tone suggests he'll brook no argument.]
no subject
Wait--
[She struggles, desperately turning her head towards the flames. She can understand his fear, though perhaps not to as deep an extent as she thinks, and it may be the only thing keeping her from successfully breaking free. That plus the fact that this sudden movement is dizzying, and she's starting to feel lightheaded.
. . . She'd rather not hurt him, either.]
Hey . . . Where are we going?
no subject
Away from the village . . . or what's left of it. It's gone, Leia. We're not going back there. It's safer here.
no subject
Eventually they're far enough away that she can breathe, though she can still taste the smoke on her tongue. Her breathing is uneven, laced with unpredictable coughs, even by the time they finally stop. It's gone, Leia. Her head spins, unable to retort coherently.]
But I can't just . . .
[She looks back at the ensuing flames upon being given the chance. She can hear them: the pleading screams, the cries for help, but from where they are, it seems almost too clear. Is she just hearing things . . . ?]
If someone doesn't stop it, everything's going to burn.

His ears are still ringing and his vision blurry by the time he wakes up to where... ever the blast threw him. He was closer to the explosion than he should've been (had he known it would happen) but far enough away to at least escape serious harm.
When there's a moment to figure out what happened he finds himself staggering automatically toward the chaos. He pauses to heal his own injuries (although he notes some are going to require actual medical attention whenever he gets back to the hospital) near by and dares not venture much closer than this until he can figure out what's going on. In his present state he feels like me might be more of a liability than a help but the urge to help, as always, is a strong pull.
He catches sight of Leia though and when he notes she's rushing headfirst into the fiery mess he instinctively reaches out and catches her arm abruptly.]
Leia, wait--! [Don't go toward the fireball of death, Leia...]
no subject
She gasps, realizing she's lost count of the times he's been able to sneak up on her. She still hasn't returned the favor.]
Jude! They need us!
[Whoever they may be. She stops for the moment and turns to face him, balling her hands into fists. He's got to understand, right . . . ? He's a do-gooder, too. Not just that, the original do-gooder.
. . . Her breaths are short and quick as she stares at him, and after a moment:]
. . . Are you okay?
[She recognizes healed wounds when she sees them.]
no subject
So when he replies with his usual--] I'm fine. [--he realizes belatedly it doesn't look like that at all. So he hurries to add,] I hit my head. [Hence the need for real medical attention because he's pretty sure he might have a minor concussion here. It also explains the weirdly high amount of blood as the blow had also caused a nasty cut. His healing artes, at least, had helped that. But really he shouldn't even be on his feet.
His other wounds are a little more obvious with a partially healed cut on his forehead and a few on his forearms when he instinctively shielded himself from the blast.
His thoughts are fuzzy but he continues,] I know but the fire is too fierce for you to go charging right in.
no subject
I wasn't charging in.
[She was totally charging in. But for now she'll stop for his sake, reaching a hand up to his head where she first notices the blood. She's shaking a bit when she realizes just how much it is, but he still seems lucid, and she intends to keep him that way.]
Let divine light mend body and mind . . . Cure.
[Her voice shakes. A familiar, warm green light takes him over as Leia closes her eyes. When the spell ends, she almost finds it hard to open them again, but she manages.]
That should stop the bleeding for now. Geez . . . [He must have been close.]
no subject
He gives a small sigh of relief because that does help a lot.] Thanks. It isn't as bad as it looks. [Head wounds just bleed a lot but... she probably knows that...
He starts to cough and belatedly registers there's too much smoke in the air now.] We need to get away from here. If you want to come back to help I'll go with you but right now we might get trapped ourselves. [They might need to wait for the fire to die down at least a little bit or for those with water artes to extinguish the blaze.]
no subject
She frowns, clearly not happy about this, but eventually relents under the pressure and increasing heat.]
Fine. Just follow me.

milla's blade is out, having already crossed paths with a couple of bewildered monsters... but she sheathes it, rushing forward to grasp leia's shoulder and pull her back, gently.
of course she'd walk closer to the flaming inferno, in an attempt to help. ]
You're going to end up killed if you go any closer than this. [ and yes, milla would care.
it's going to take a hella crazy amount of splash spells to get this thing under control... times undine would come in handy: right now. ]
no subject
leia finds her words then, determined look on her face as she faces her. ]
Milla . . . People could be hurt.
[ i have to go. leia doesn't take off right away though; a part of her is still scared and hesitant to leave anyone behind, even someone as capable and amazing as milla. ]
no subject
--but those words don't come out. instead: ]
... I'll cover you.
[ even before she'd thought of it. leia would go no matter what she said, and milla leaving her to get injured while doing that, well... she wouldn't admit it out loud, but it leaves a bad taste in her mouth. ]
I can't offer much besides some water artes, but it should at least be enough to keep some of the flames away while you look.
[ these
do-gooders..... ]
no subject
Water artes sound perfect.
[ she looks relieved once everything settles. having back up is certainly not a bad thing, though there's an air of nervousness about her, too. it's been a while since they fought and worked together. ]
I hope I don't hold you back.
[ she doesn't want to see milla get hurt. especially not on her account. ]
no subject
the fact that leia's so surprised and then-- relieved is a little embarrassing. not in a bad way, but... milla figures why the girl reacted the way she had. she can't really blame her for not seeing that kind of thing coming, considering her usual demeanour. ]
You won't.
[ that's all she offers in return for leia's nervousness. the statement isn't said as if it was meant to offer some kind of reassurance (but it was), and more like a simple fact. milla herself tries not to dwell on it to much as it's another thing that's slightly embarrassing, a glyph appearing at her feet as she casts a simple splash spell on the nearest flames.
then, three balls of water surround her, and: ]
We'll move through and get who we can--if it gets bad we're leaving. [ how bad is bad for milla though?! Really Bad.
her next words are quieter. ] ... And stay close.
no subject
she materializes her staff. ]
You can count on me.
[ with a determined look on her face, she'll happily take up the rear. ]
