You Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance

You were always warned about the little things that go bump in the night, but you didn't believe them, did you? After all, ghosts don't exist, and things aren't really out to get you in the dark. As the month draws nearer to its final days, however, you're going to want to double check that belief of yours.

On the eve of the 20th, continuing on, you'll feel the signs. It'll begin with a flicker, something barely noticeable. Conveniently, that day, the cinemas will start showing some creepy movies (maybe you'll have seen similar ones back home, or have you?) and you can access Ceres' TV stations- amazing show and movie line-up on their devices or TV screen. All seems to be normal, really... except for the weather that seems somewhat chilly and dismal throughout, with chances of storms every now and then. 'tis the season to be spooky, after all. It's just the weather being weird...

Until you get the feeling that something is in your house... and you sure as heck didn't invite it in.

How will you know? Well, you might hear it, whispering in your ear, or maybe see it as just appearing as part of that movie, or on a Holo-screen you're walking by, and disappearing as quickly as you hear or see it...

"You'd better not shout, you'd better not cry, you'd better not pout NoT TeLliNg YoU whY Gonna taste you, spit you out, smell you soon YoU STINKy LOuT. Hope you like the company. We've been dying to meet you."

//SCENARIOS.EXE
PHASE I
[ xx:xx ] Your first day will go normally enough, even if some things at work or school will behave a little oddly. Nothing too major, but enough to give you a sense of unease through the day.

The real fun begins when the evening is in full swing, because things will feel even worse than before. Objects will disappear and reappear in the wrong places, your HoloGM at home or the workplace will decide to suddenly flicker into strange shapes and frightening objects before turning to normal, and who threw that lamp??

If you were planning on spending an evening of peace, well. We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but... on the positive side, there's a fun stream of spooky shows to watch?! Just ignore the possibility of someone joining you... or not. Ignoring a guest isn't nice, you know. Will you run into the arms of a lover or friend, or run and hide? The choice is yours.
PHASE II
[ xx:xx ] You're going to really not like what comes next, deep into the hours past 3 a.m. Hope you're not a cranky sleeper, because you may want to be up for this. Your Cerevice will blink a strange message that will merely read "W A R N I N G" and flicker to normal before you feel that your privacy has been completely compromised.

Or at least haunted.

Because the next thing you know? Ghosts. Lots of them. And they're not going to wait before giving you chase and letting your senses take the hit. Of course, you might just get lucky and not be visited by any of the ghosts at all- but then again, things will just continue to make you jumpy and spook you out throughout the time the others suffer. Hope you weren't counting on a lot of sleep. And as for those of you who will eventually become victims of your unfriendly visitors, well... hope your friends are around to help. Your CereVice certainly will.
PHASE III
[ xx:xx ] What a rotten week. If you haven't been visited by your ghosts of eternal damage, you're going to have a nasty week at work with things going wrong and everything just points at you. If you have been hit by a ghost, you're going to be suffering the after-effects throughout. The good news is, your CereVices will do their best to compensate for what you did lose. You can voice activate them or touch activate them, or have them give you textual directions. Your healer friends however, can come in very handy and attempt to fix you up- and may even succeed! Though some effects may be stronger than the rest. Even ViViD will have some intriguing new stages that may put your recent condition into focus and have you work through them to gain a better boost.

Just don't be surprised if it isn't entirely effective, but hey, remember when we said having friends is a good thing? Hope you've been making some, because they might just be the only chance you have against suffering this alone.
PHASE IV
[ xx:xx ] As the week draws to a close, the effects of the hauntings will start to wear off, and surprise and joy, things will seem normal again. People won't be experiencing any irritations and jumpy situations at home anymore, and all will be well.

Then night will fall and they'll come again.

For those of you who were lucky enough to escape, the only trouble you'll have is the screams of horror and the frightening situations your friends are in (did we mention you had to make friends?)- you may have to get out of bed to help, hunt around- and probably put your life on the line.

Because those that did get affected, will be dragged into a place of horror and fright, of shivers and quivers- Vidia's Secret: Premium Lingerie to suit all tastes. A beast of horrifying proportions awaits there, ready to tear your friends from limb to limb, so we do hope the captives are prepared to fight, or die trying.
PURGATORY
[ why:o'clock ] You died while fighting against the final boss. Sucks, but it happens. That's why you're here, after all. There isn't much, but make yourselves at home. The surroundings will look pleasant enough, little recovery huts with some cute digital medics of all types waiting in there to help you out. After about 12 hours in Ceres time, the characters will step out of ViViD and be given gift bags with "You Tried" stars on them, each containing a sexy set of lingerie (and animal onesies for anyone below 16) and pampering materials like bath bombs, chocolates, candles and shampoos to take the trauma off the last few days. For those that survived, they'll be getting the same, as well as "Well Done!" stars on their bags (and an extra massage coupon)- and all parties will recieve a little note contained within reading: "We're sorry, have some gifts. You can blame one of your own for being too curious, though. Remember to read the instructions next time, and don't go on witch hunts!"

For those exploring Purgatory, just relax and enjoy the view. Also, your characters might have woken up wearing the lingerie or onesies during their "recovery treatment"... we're sorry they're the only clothes they'll get until they leave. :(
[ Remember to apply proper warnings on threads with trigger-y or inappropriate material and do let a mod know if your thread careens off into maiming or canoodling so we can lock the log. ]

[ Gon has faced up against plenty of enemies that outmatch him and lived to tell the tale — in fact, that kind of seems to be his modus operandi — but Killua knows very well by now how much Gon doesn't like running from a fight. If it's difficult, then that's all the more reason to keep on. Nobody ever grew from fighting opponents weaker than them, after all!

Which naturally means that Gon is loathe to give up this fight. ]

There's no such thing as somebody who can't be beat, right? That means there must be some trick we haven't thought up yet.

[ Which means that nope, he's not ready to throw in the towel yet. ]

[ Normally, Killua would agree, except for the fact that their attacks aren't doing any damage. They're giving it all they've got, and this guy hasn't even flinched. Something weird is going on. Even if they don't do much damage, they should at least be able to make him pause; they're not that weak.

And yet as Killua dodges a swing of the chainsaw, leaping to the side and going in with another should-kill strike at the ghost's chest, there's nothing. His nails hit the ghost's skin and slide off.

They can't win this. Not if all of their attacks have no effect. The problem is convincing Gon of that, of course.
]

He's stronger than us. [ Killua's voice is tight with strain; he can feel fear bubbling up in his chest even as he tries to swallow it down, tries to keep it at bay. ] Gon, we have no idea why we can't damage him. We're not in the game anymore.

Yeah, but we've already come this far, haven't we? There's no point if we give up now!

[ And without waiting to hear Killua's answer, Gon charges up for his next attack, waiting for the monster to get close enough before he unleashes his attack. ]

Show me — scissors!

[ It would've been enough to split boulders into two, but the Nen-powered attack just glances off of it. Gon jumps back almost immediately, but not quite fast enough — the chainsaw just barely clips him, enough to leave a gash on his upper arm, but barely even registers on Gon's radar as an actual injury. ]

[ Yeah, see, things that are okay: fighting monsters when they actually have a decent chance of winning, even if Gon's fighting style tends to be "get beat up until he figures out a way to pull through." Things that aren't okay: undamageable monsters in unwinnable fights with Gon veering toward going to get himself sliced up for absolutely no reason. Killua refuses to watch Gon die trying.

Even if the ghost isn't letting off any kind of aura, anything that makes Killua feel like just curling up into a ball until it goes away, this is still an untenable situation. He darts in, manages to at least shove the monster back and farther away from Gon, and snaps out:
]

Stop it. We're not going to win!

[ He knows how stubborn Gon can be. That's why he doesn't wait for a response, just grabs Gon by the wrist and bodily drags him out, running flat out through the halls of the... some kind of store? Whatever, until they reach the mall proper and he can yank Gon into a utility closet, slam the door behind them, and press himself to it, listening for any signs of pursuit.

It doesn't matter how angry Gon might be with him. It'd be stupid to stay there without a plan, without any way to win.
]
agonism: (now is not the time to elope)

[personal profile] agonism 2014-12-23 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Gon's not angry so much as he is disappointed; it takes him a few moments to cool down, breathing evening out and making an attempt to let the good sense override his hot head, because Killua wouldn't pull him from a fight with no good reason for it. Finally, he sucks in a deep breath and then exhales sharply, nodding in Killua's direction. ]

Okay, what's the plan?
dielectrics: (53)

[personal profile] dielectrics 2014-12-24 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
[ Well, at least Gon's willing to wait until Killua has a plan. The problem is that... Killua really doesn't have even the first inkling of a plan going on. The frustration he's feeling with his own inability to come up with what Gon's expecting of him turns his voice sharp. ]

I don't know. Let me think.

[ Nothing they'd done worked. The ghost hadn't looked like it had any kind of shielding, no nen, nothing technological, just... invulnerability. Something they've never come across before, and no clues to tell him where to start. But Gon's counting on him, it's his job to figure something out.

Maybe they can at least contain it even if they can't damage it? Gon probably wont' like that idea, but it might be better than nothing until they can ask around and see if anyone else has any idea why the thing can't even be scratched. That's still only temporary, though, and besides, Gon's not asking for a plan to trap it. He wants a plan to fight it.

Killua starts pacing, steps short and jerky with his irritation.
]
agonism: (that's a terrible plan. let's do it)

[personal profile] agonism 2014-12-24 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
[ In the meanwhile... Gon has finally registered that he is, in fact, bleeding. It's a very good thing that he ended up being an Enhancer or his life would be even harder than it already is; he focuses his Nen to the cut to keep the injury from getting worse before looking up to where Killua is pacing. It's not like him to be so obviously on edge, Gon knows, so his immediate instinct is to approach, reaching out to put a hand on Killua's shoulder. ]

... What's wrong, Killua?
dielectrics: (17)

[personal profile] dielectrics 2014-12-24 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Killua freezes beneath Gon's touch, head whipping around to stare at him, only a little wild-eyed and really obviously on edge. ]

You don't wanna just catch that thing, right?

[ So what if that's not... really an answer to Gon's question? He still has a job to do, he has to figure out how they can take the ghost down. There isn't time to focus on why he's worked up, not when he's sure Gon is itching to get back to the fight. ]
agonism: (hey killua why's your backpack so dumb)

[personal profile] agonism 2014-12-25 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
If you think that's the best thing to do, then that's fine with me, but...

[ That's basically what they did to the Bomber, after all. But that circumstance seems different from this one; they had a reason for wanting to capture and not kill Genthru, whereas he doesn't see an immediate reason to capture this creature-thing. ]
dielectrics: (43)

[personal profile] dielectrics 2014-12-25 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
[ Gon's lack of gung-ho-ness for beating the monster to a pulp gives Killua some clarity, lets his mind stop racing long enough for him to take a deep breath and finally calm down some. It's hard when he still feels like they should be running, like they couldn't have possibly run far enough, and something in him quails at the idea of going back to throw themselves at the ghost again, but he manages, and finally shakes his head, like he could physically discard the panick that had been clutching at his chest. ]

I don't know how to beat it. [ He says it like a confession, like he's letting Gon down, not having a plan ready to go, but even as he says it, he knows that of course Gon isn't expecting him to, not so quickly. ] I couldn't see anything that'd keep it from being affected by our attacks.
agonism: (ngl i love gi arc for paladin's necklace)

[personal profile] agonism 2014-12-27 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, me neither. But I don't think it's possible for anything to be completely invincible, right? That kind of power would need a really strong covenant and restriction.

[ Maybe it's a highly situational kind of thing? At any rate, Gon really can't believe that there's a monster that can't receive any damage whatsoever. Even Hisoka has gotten nastily injured. Even Meruem got radiation poisoning.

Not that the second example really matters in this case, but. ]

— Killua, I can hear it getting closer. [ The buzzing of the chainsaw's kind of a giveaway. ] We should move.
dielectrics: (94)

[personal profile] dielectrics 2014-12-27 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Killua shakes himself out of his thoughts, and slants Gon a grin, only a little wan. ]

Right, let's go somewhere else. [ He's already thinking again, now that he's not stuck on how he can't do what Gon needs, mind already racing ahead to how they can figure out what will work, if nothing they can do right now will. ] We'll have to come up with something new, and then test it.

[ He pushes the door open and takes a look down the hall: clear for now, but probably not for long, and he motions Gon out. ]

We'll try as many times as it takes. No matter how stupid it seems, we'll try anything until we find something that works.

[ He's planning on having a bit more strategy than that to what they do try, but for now, it's a good enough plan to start with. ]
agonism: (the unlikeliest of weapons: fishing rod)

[personal profile] agonism 2014-12-29 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Right! I'm counting on you, Killua. We'll find a way somehow.

[ But first, not dying from being trapped in a utility closet. The good thing about the chainsaw is that it makes their opponent conspicuous. He darts down the hallway, stopping when they come to the end of it. A left or a right, but lingerie on both sides.

At times like this, you gotta go with your instinct!! Gon points to the right. ]

Let's go this way?
dielectrics: (93)

[personal profile] dielectrics 2014-12-29 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'll follow you.

[ Gon's instinctual sense of direction is as good as anything else, considering neither of them has been inside a Vidia's Secret before. Is the exit past the bright pink lacy teddies or the sequined memory foam bras? Killua has no idea and he was happy not having a reason to ever try to figure it out.

This is a really big store, actually. Like, really, really big. Just how much lingerie do the people around here need? Killua's starting to suspect there's something wrong with the dimensions of the store, considering how far they've run and not yet found an end to the ruffly aisles of merchandise, but they also haven't passed duplicates of anything yet, so maybe the place really is just that massively big.

They can't just keep running, though. Well, they could, they've got the stamina for it, but it's a lot easier to think and set out a trap if they're not dashing around. When they've covered at least a mile of distance, Killua puts on a little speed and nudges Gon's arm, pointing him toward what looks like... yes, that is indeed some kind of romantic, rose-covered gazebo set up in the middle of the store, but at least it's shelter of a sort.
]

In here. We can see him coming, but there's enough cover if we sit on the ground.

[ Instead of on the very plush, very red, heart-shaped bed. ]
agonism: (ngl i love gi arc for paladin's necklace)

[personal profile] agonism 2014-12-30 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
[ Ooh la la, Killua. How forward! Not that the romance of the set-up even registers in Gon's mind in favor of how much cover it gives them.

He wrinkles his nose a little now that they've gotten a few moments to rest. This Vidia's Secret smells really strongly of perfume, it's enough that it masks the other scents in the shop. Plus, it just smells way too strongly, Gon kind of wants to sneeze. ]

Maybe we should use these racks to slow him down. [ Surely nobody will miss a few dozen push-up bras and cute panties? Then again, it's not like Gon has ever had need to pay attention to such things before in his life, so he wouldn't really know. ] ... I can't tell if it's still following us or not.
dielectrics: (36)

[personal profile] dielectrics 2014-12-30 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's fine, we probably lost him for a while—

[ Killua stops. Slowly turns to look at Gon.

Sure, they're far enough away that they can't hear the chainsaw any more. And yeah, they'd taken an awfully winding route through the lingerie forest. But this is Gon, who'd followed Leorio's cologne miles out of the killer swamp. Killua's... honestly not sure what to make of this statement.
]

Wait, what do you mean you can't tell?
agonism: (i never said it was a good plan)

[personal profile] agonism 2014-12-30 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
This store... it makes me want to sneeze really badly.

[ He can't even begin to explain how thick the perfume is, especially considering that he's sensitive to scents. At least it's not, say, A&F, but it's still permeating the air so thoroughly that it's making it hard for him to sniff out anything else from a distance. ]

But we should be able to hear it before it gets too close, at least.
dielectrics: (06)

[personal profile] dielectrics 2014-12-31 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
[ Killua nods in absent agreement, but he's still not ready to stop at least being... mildly concerned. He knows Gon's sense of smell is way better than his is — probably better than most dogs' are — but still, he's not usually sensitive enough that he can't track someone in a store that... really doesn't smell much. ]

What's making you wanna sneeze? [ He frowns and takes a deep inhale. ] I don't smell anything weird. [ Or much of anything at all. ]
