![]() You were always warned about the little things that go bump in the night, but you didn't believe them, did you? After all, ghosts don't exist, and things aren't really out to get you in the dark. As the month draws nearer to its final days, however, you're going to want to double check that belief of yours. On the eve of the 20th, continuing on, you'll feel the signs. It'll begin with a flicker, something barely noticeable. Conveniently, that day, the cinemas will start showing some creepy movies (maybe you'll have seen similar ones back home, or have you?) and you can access Ceres' TV stations- amazing show and movie line-up on their devices or TV screen. All seems to be normal, really... except for the weather that seems somewhat chilly and dismal throughout, with chances of storms every now and then. 'tis the season to be spooky, after all. It's just the weather being weird... Until you get the feeling that something is in your house... and you sure as heck didn't invite it in. How will you know? Well, you might hear it, whispering in your ear, or maybe see it as just appearing as part of that movie, or on a Holo-screen you're walking by, and disappearing as quickly as you hear or see it...

... Sousei's expression tightens. He's been respecting Tenka's wishes since they arrived. He respected Tenka's wishes in regards to Shirasu, and their living situation, and so many other small things.
But he can't here, when it's Tenka's well-being on the line.]
...Let me tend to it. You will not be able to reach it from there. [and...he's assuming that if he's not letting Sousei help, he's not letting anyone, though maybe that's an erroneous assumption.
...Slightly more hesitantly--] ...Unless there is someone else you will allow to tend to it.
[Because Tenka's well-being is still more important than how...that would feel.]
no subject
No?
[What a weird thing to say, Sousei. He's pretty obviously bewildered at that train of thought - who else would he trust more than his partner?]
Don't be dumb. [There's no one else.]
It's something I need to take care of myself.
no subject
[YOU'RE GOING TO HURT YOURSELF FURTHER. Or at least not take care of it properly, and they were drilled on the importance of taking care of your injuries properly, and come on, Tenka.]
I will help.
[so...just let him.]
no subject
I can at least dress it until morning. Then I'll go to the hospital and get it looked at properly - happy?
[A doctor. He'll get a proper doctor to look at it. A doctor who doesn't know what his scar means and is completely removed from the situation.]
no subject
Going to such lengths just to keep Sousei from helping...?]
... No. [QUITE FRANKLY, HE'S NOT.] What are you hiding from me?
no subject
Something better left alone.
[It's about as firm as Tenka can get, surprisingly. He can't try to dodge the situation with a joke like he normally would with Soramaru. He can't just leave the table without any answers whatsoever - it'd be too close to abandoning and running from the conversation. Tenka doesn't like running.
But he also doesn't like sharing more than he's ready to. Sousei knows exactly what he's been through but perhaps that's what makes it that much harder to show the physical result of Tenka's lifetime of pain.]
no subject
And now here Tenka was, hiding something yet again. It was as if they hadn't made any progress at all--except it's all the more frustrating because they have.
His tone is terse, and he focuses on what he knows to be true.]
... Regardless, I will not allow it to compromise your health. [Because...that's more important than anything. He wants to help Tenka, and support him, just as sensei had asked him to--but it's damn hard when he's being like this.]
no subject
[They'd just talked about this, didn't they? Tenka has no interest in dying and will be struggling for his life no matter what.
He knows he's being stubborn. He's fully aware that it's entirely a bad idea to keep secrets from his partner. But Tenka had been hoping that if there's anything he would take to the grave, it's this. He's not the type to boast over his scars and in this case, it's one that he'd rather the world entirely forgot. Particularly since it's a remnant of the one day where Tenka's entire life was ruined.
Still, he can't help but get snappy. Tenka understands they're partners but Sousei's always trusted him to act on his own when it was important. To Tenka, this is important.]
Why can't you just leave this one thing alone? I tell you everything else.
[It's not often that Tenka is sharp but instead of raising his voice and waking the kids, this is his alternative.]
no subject
Why can't he leave it alone? Because it is interfering with Tenka's health. Why not this one thing? Because there should be nothing. This...is not total trust, no matter what Tenka says to justify it. This is still a fractured, incomplete trust, and he doesn't even know why.
But it's clear that arguing it will change nothing, and the longer he does argue it, the longer Tenka goes without at least attempting to treat his own injury. Abruptly, without a word, Sousei stands.]
... Visit the doctor tomorrow. [Let someone else look at it, if you're so intent on keeping secrets from him. Better at least someone takes care of it. And then he turns to go. It's hard to say if Tenka wants him gone from the apartment while he tends to it or just the room, so he'll take the safest option of all. He'll go for a walk.]
no subject
[He can at least promise Sousei that much.
... it's not good. He looks down at the medical kit in his hands and shakes his head. His partner tries to take care of him and Tenka has a feeling that he's going to feel the effects of this for some time. Yet when he thinks of reopening old wounds with memories of that day, it causes more of a pain in his chest than anything that this injury can throw at him.
Still before, Sousei really manages to exit, Tenka's already sighing.]
Help me up?
[He doesn't want to do this in the living room.
He's awfully selfish.]
no subject
They weren't always like this. He knows they weren't. Once upon a time, Tenka had been so eager to share everything with Sousei--home, family and dreams.
But he does suppose things change and changed, no matter what progress it felt like they were making. Ultimately, it's a fair second or two before he reacts. And then, quietly, he turns to help Tenka up, one hand at his upper arm, and the other supporting under his armpit.
Fine. He really hasn't ever been able to deny him anything, huh. He knows what Tenka wants, so it's automatic to help Tenka towards his room without a word.]
no subject
In a way, Sousei already knows exactly about what Tenka's hiding. He was there when the wound was fresh and Tenka had completely passed out from the pain, unable to cope with the feeling of having his skin ripped through, not even realizing that he was partially immobile until he woke up on an operating table.
Sousei knows. Sousei knows all of that and Sousei listened through all of Tenka's stories when he recounted his experiences.
But he still can't bring himself to let him see something that not even his brothers have witnessed - the scarred over flesh that reminds Tenka of his struggles every single day. If he doesn't take his medicine, the wound would win.
But this is strained and awkward and Tenka can feel it. The guilt is settling in quickly because he is not lying or skipping over a subject - he's simply directly telling Sousei that he doesn't want to share something. Even for Tenka, it's a rather vicious wound to be dealt.
So as they approach his room and Tenka slides open the screen, he pauses.
He opens his mouth as if to say something and then he closes it. What does he say?
'Trust me'?
Well, that's hypocritical.]
.... Sorry.
[Perhaps that's worse.]
no subject
In a way, it does feel like a slap to the face. But then, he's been dealt those, metaphorically or literally (with a book, at least), so...
So maybe it's just not worth it to fight this. Sousei learned quickly, acting as the leader of the Yamainu, that there are some battles you can't win. If Tenka does not want to share it, then it won't be shared, no matter what. When he's certain Tenka is steady enough on his feet, and when he is in his room, he simply lets go, allowing his hands to drop to his sides.]
...I do not want your apologies.
[In a way, apologies are cheap--because he really can't be that sorry, if this still takes priority. But he'll leave Tenka to it now, sliding the screen shut again with deliberate gentleness before he turns to leave the apartment. He's exhausted, physically and emotionally, but he can't stay there either.
At the very least, he needs to take a walk and clear his head--and if that gives Tenka time to tend to his own injury, then that's just as well.]
no subject
Tenka had turned to try to patch up his back and was instead met with pain. He tried to use a mirror to figure out which way to dress his own wound but aside from getting the bleeding to stop - painstakingly, which involved a lot of teeth grinding - he's unsuccessful.
It's maybe an hour of trying later and risking opening his wound up at least twice more that he realizes that he's not getting anywhere. Every glance back in the mirror just brings him face to face with the scar that he hates to see too. He'd told Sousei that he would patch up his wound and go to see a doctor-
But if he can't fulfill the first part, he's betraying his word to his partner.
. . . . . fuck.
So he spends another 30 minutes after that stewing on his problem. Let Sousei see his scar and bring up bad memories for his partner or... fail to do something that he told his partner that he'd do?
He'd betrayed Sousei's trust once before and told himself he wouldn't do it again.
Despite Tenka's pride, it makes it easy. He doesn't doubt that Sousei would take Tenka neglecting his own health right after saying that he won't take any chances with dying as more offensive than seeing a scar from 10 years ago. Then it's just working himself up to realizing that after keeping one secret to himself for ten years, he'll finally give it up to another person.
But after hours of running from a ghost together, leaning on his partner to get back home, and even sharing a futon just like when they were kids.... if it's Sousei, it'll be fine.
So Tenka sighs as he stands, putting on his cloak with the Kumou crest on it on top of his pajama pants, taking the medical kit in his hands, and walks right back to Sousei's room for the second time that night. Again, after a slight moment of hesitation, he enters and goes to sit in an empty spot on the futon before nudging Sousei.]
Pssst. Wake up.
[God, he hates admitting when Sousei's right.]
no subject
So he's not particularly happy to be woken up by said partner.
He blinks once, blearily, and pushes himself into a sitting position. It's not hard to spy that medical kit, and despite everything, despite the irritation and frustration and vague feeling of that lack of trust, Sousei's initial reaction is still concern.
Did something happen? Did Tenka end up worse, somehow?]
Are you alright?
no subject
[c....asual.....
But alright sass aside, Tenka sighs and nudges the medical kit closer to Sousei.]
I.... couldn't fix it by myself.
[That's something he can admit. It's something he admitted to Shirasu too, back when he was the one that Tenka would bug in the middle of the night when he needed help with something. But now, instead of asking for an odd favor, this is... the equivalent of Tenka giving up his last secret. The last thing that he kept for himself over 10 years to avoid worrying anyone.
But since he couldn't fix it himself, it was either this or make his word to his partner meaningless. He made his choice.]
...... it's a given, but you don't tell anyone else.
[If you help him and see the scar that he's managed to hide for ten years.]
no subject
But in a way, that's how Tenka has always been. So he sets that aside for the far more important aspect of this, namely making sure that Tenka is patched up and not going to hurt himself worse.
So he tilts his head at the words, before he gives his answer in turn.]
...I promise.
[It's a promise that he makes very carefully, because he can't break his word, especially not to Tenka. But...if this is what it takes, then this is what it takes.]
no subject
Just knowing that much manages to get Tenka to sigh a bit in relief. He's apprehensive enough about Sousei seeing the scar and he was there to see it when he was still open. But if it was ever mentioned in passing to Soramaru or Chuutarou, should he ever arrive, Tenka doesn't think he'd want to deal with it. Soramaru knows the wound he was dealt too.... but even now Tenka isn't sure how much he know about everything that comes with it.
Sousei knows what his scar means and Tenka trusts him with it and all the secrecy that comes with it - even if it's the harder path for certain.]
... I'm going to warn you now. You're still not going to be happy.
[Which is enough reason why Tenka didn't want to share this in the first place.
Regardless, he shrugs off his cloak, setting it aside before turning his body so that Sousei can see his back - still faintly bloody from the wound, though even the place where skin was broken is nothing compared to the long, deep scar that runs down his spine.
Can't blame him if he's a bit tense.
But his partner being able to trust him is still more important than his comfort and that's what he's decided.]
no subject
But he'd picked himself back up.
He's still here. And he's still here because he was able to learn how to keep going and how to be strong, no matter what was thrown his way. So after that brief pause, Sousei begins rummaging through the first aid kit, though all he says is--]
Honestly.
[This was what the fuss was about? He doesn't see why. He finds one of the alcohol pads (handy things, these modern medicine kits) and sets to cleaning away the blood, and adds quite frankly--]
This was why you bled all over your floor?
[He has seen this injury before, and while he knows that Tenka suffered a lot because of this injury, and all that came with it, he can tell so very easily that he's tense.
Maybe it's entirely wrong, but somehow in response to Tenka's tenseness, Sousei just can't be as serious.]
no subject
You're picking now of all times to care about home decor?
[Sousei you have literally never cared about their floors before as long as Tenka cleaned up whatever mess he made and yes that's going to extend to the blood too.
But it works.
His shoulders aren't as rigid and he's close to trying to turn his head to see Sousei.
He's distracted.]
no subject
You did not have to hide this. [Not to the extent of compromising his own health...honestly, tenka.]
Now stay still. You'll make my bandaging uneven if you keep shifting.
no subject
So for the first time in... too long, he laughs at that. Softly and not as loud as his normal booming laughs, but this one is genuine. Quiet as it is, he really is just amused.
It's slowly sinking in that habits during their ten years apart don't really need to be kept because they're really, really not apart anymore.]
I hide it from everyone. Too many questions would come up.
[And that day is one that Tenka doesn't like to talk about.]
no subject
I don't have any questions.
[After all...he was there. He does know what this means and where it came from. He's hardly going to let Tenka relive it, after all--and honestly, he just wanted to take care of that injury.
So with it all resolved--]
Finished. You will still need to go to a doctor tomorrow. [But you can put your clothes back on and stop fretting now.]
no subject
At least until the last sentence sinks in even as Tenka is shrugging on his cloak again to cover his back and turning to face Souesi with a frown.]
What? I let you help me! I don't wanna go see a doctor!
[Here we are again.]
no subject
[really, it's an expression of fondness, really!!! Probably. Maybe.]
It is too deep for me to take care of properly. [So he settled with cleaning and bandaging it.]
