[ upon kogami's suggestion, akane's taken it upon herself to find a suitable (ha ha) way of celebrating her 23rd birthday! she found the chilling cave by coincidence while patrolling the streets once and decided that she wants to try ice skating.

so after texting the guys (brother, mom, and dad), as well as a couple of friends (really, it's just a couple. she doesn't have much friends) if they're free on the 17th, she waits outside the chilling cave, hoping to meet up with her friends.

[ He pulls her up, slowly, ready to catch her if she slips again. ]

Are you hurt? [ That phone conversation with Leon is still somewhere back in his mind. ]

[mombastic]

Just my pride. [ She says it so cheerfully, though?? She's up, at least, if a little wobbly, but it looks like she won't crash again if she stays perfectly still. ] But I might feel it in the morning if this keeps happening.

[ Ah. You know, he really doesn't want more of her kids calling him up and accusing him of bringing her to a dangerous place. He should take responsibility... ]

[ With his luck, Jack Frost will just snuff out his cigarette the instant he lights it.

Otome nods, though, gingerly grasping his arm for the dorkiest-looking skate/shuffle. ]

I'll try to mostly keep my hands off of you before the first date.

[ He shoots her a curious glance, before asking directly: ]

Is that a figure of speech or are you asking me out?

[mombastic]

[ ... That was way too direct, and Otome, for once, looks legitimately startled-- but manages to recover fairly quickly with a light laugh. ]

Hmm. I wonder which one you'd prefer?

I can't promise I'd be a good date, unfortunately. [ She'd be the person to immediately ditch a fancy dinner if a call came for medical aid. ]

Likewise, it's been some odd years for me. [ He understands. He would ditch a fancy dinner to murder Makishima. (wait--) ]

If you're saying that you'd like to get to know me, then I'm not opposed to it. You may not like the things you learn, but it's important to face reality.

[mombastic]

... If you were a perfect person, Kogami-san, I'd be very concerned. [ To be perfectly honest here. ] But I'd very much like to get to know you. The bad with the good.

[ I mean, you call her at two in the morning and she still talks to you, isn't that a sign she can handle some shit? ]

[ He doesn't answer straight away, only keeping his eyes on her as they reach the railing, carefully considering her words. He wonders if the reason he liked talking with her so much was because she didn't know everything about him, but at the same time, maintaining that would just be a lie. There's no real connection in that, is there? ]

At least let me be the one to ask you. [ It's his way of saying yes, he's not actually concerned with gender expectations and such. In a way, he appreciates that she's making the first move. ]

[mombastic]

[ The sigh Otome heaves at reaching the railing is laughably loud, as she moves a hand from his arm to latch onto that instead. One eyebrow lift when she glances back at him. ]

Ask me what? You were the one who said you wanted to get to know me first, weren't you? In the library?

[ UNDER EROTICA INFLUENCE, but still.

She's delicately offering you salvation so you don't have to be embarrassed, Kogami. ]

[ Shaking her finger at him, mock-sternly. ]

[ But Koharu's not here, she's about to say, confused-- but then she remembers that even if she was, her aunt and uncle are alive in the world she'd been pulled from, so she hadn't adopted her.

Which still leaves the confusion, and she blinks slowly. ]

... It does. [ And she's even more confused now. ] But he shouldn't have had a reason to call you about me.

He did it anyway. He was worried about you. [ Naturally, he thinks. Otome just has that personality that makes others worry for her, too. He should know. ]

...For what I did in the library.

[mombastic]

[ Oh. She honestly hadn't expected Leon to get so worried to the point that he'd call someone he didn't know, instead of ask her for the details. It's... actually really endearing, to know he cares to that extent, but all the same-- ]

I'm sorry. He didn't seem all that interested after I told him you'd apologized, and I don't hold any of that against you...

Really, though, after telling me I had absolutely no reason to care about him...

[ THIS BOY. ]

No harm done. [ Leon was a little blunt, but he wasn't entirely rude... and even if he was, Kogami wouldn't say anything about it. Kids are kids. ]

Not all teenage boys know how to deal with their emotions, especially if they had a sketchy past. Perhaps being around you would be good for him.

[mombastic]

I feel like you may be giving me too much credit here, Kogami-san. If I can help him, though... I'd be very happy.

[ A pause, as she straightens up on the ice. ]

But if you're waiting for a blessing from him, you'll be waiting a while. He doesn't seem to like admitting when he likes someone.

[abhors]

Assuming he'll ever like me in the first place. [ Mini Ginoza. ]

What do you want to do?

[mombastic]

I'd like to make at least one lap around this rink. [ Without hesitation. ]

And I'd also like you to do what you want to do, within reason.

[ He doesn't give her an answer yet, choosing to focus on one request before dealing with the other. ]

First, it's important to learn how to balance. Don't stand so stiff, relax and bend your knees just slightly.

[ He takes her arms and guides them to spread out on each side. ] -- Keep these below shoulder level.

[ Otome obeys, grimacing a bit as it feels like her legs are just going to keep sliding out from under her. Okay, but this is just balancing. She's got this. And with her arms in the proper position-- ]

That's right, now lean forward just a little. [ He moves out of her way so she can try it. ] Knees bent, shoulders forward.

Try moving now, without the help of the rail. [ She'll probably fall a few times, or maybe she won't at all, but it's gonna help her get the hang of balancing. ]
