[ upon kogami's suggestion, akane's taken it upon herself to find a suitable (ha ha) way of celebrating her 23rd birthday! she found the chilling cave by coincidence while patrolling the streets once and decided that she wants to try ice skating.

so after texting the guys (brother, mom, and dad), as well as a couple of friends (really, it's just a couple. she doesn't have much friends) if they're free on the 17th, she waits outside the chilling cave, hoping to meet up with her friends.

it's time… to chill! ]

I feel like you may be giving me too much credit here, Kogami-san. If I can help him, though... I'd be very happy.

[ A pause, as she straightens up on the ice. ]

But if you're waiting for a blessing from him, you'll be waiting a while. He doesn't seem to like admitting when he likes someone.

[abhors]

Assuming he'll ever like me in the first place. [ Mini Ginoza. ]

What do you want to do?

[mombastic]

I'd like to make at least one lap around this rink. [ Without hesitation. ]

And I'd also like you to do what you want to do, within reason.

[abhors]

[ He doesn't give her an answer yet, choosing to focus on one request before dealing with the other. ]

First, it's important to learn how to balance. Don't stand so stiff, relax and bend your knees just slightly.

[ He takes her arms and guides them to spread out on each side. ] -- Keep these below shoulder level.

[mombastic]

[ Otome obeys, grimacing a bit as it feels like her legs are just going to keep sliding out from under her. Okay, but this is just balancing. She's got this. And with her arms in the proper position-- ]

[abhors]

That's right, now lean forward just a little. [ He moves out of her way so she can try it. ] Knees bent, shoulders forward.

Try moving now, without the help of the rail. [ She'll probably fall a few times, or maybe she won't at all, but it's gonna help her get the hang of balancing. ]

[mombastic]

Shoulders...

[ Her eyes are narrowed now in concentration, and she slooowly moves forward-- but doesn't get all that far before her balance swings a little too forward, and she slips with a yelp. ]

[abhors]

Is this the part where I'm supposed to be good and not laugh?

[ He can't help but look a little amused anyway. ]

How did that feel? [ He helps her to her feet once again. ]

[mombastic]

I thought we went over the laughter rule...

[ Grumbling, but it's extremely halfhearted. Once she's on her feet, she adjusts her balance again, letting go of his hands to try once more. She won't answer his second question, but she remembers the feeling of leaning forward too much, so she'll correct herself accordingly.

... And fall two more times, but then she's finally moving. Not quickly, but forward progress! ]

[abhors]

Dolor hic tibi proderit olim.

[ He skates beside her, slowly as she's finally moving unassisted. ]

"Someday this pain will be useful to you". Falling is just a part of learning, Yanagiya, and you're already improving.

[mombastic]

[ Wryly, glancing over at him: ] I used to say the same to all the children who came in with sports injuries. [ Only without the Latin. ]

I'll remind myself when I'm dealing with the bruises later.

[abhors]

Take your time with the lap now, if you complete it without falling, I'll tell you what I'd like to do.

[ A pause, before he echoes the rest of her words from earlier. ] Within reason.

[mombastic]

So that's the carrot, is it...?

[ A nod, determined, and she focuses her gaze ahead. There'll be a few close calls, but DAMMIT SHE'LL MAKE IT. ]

[abhors]

[ Since she's supposed to do it this time without any help, he'll just stay behind and keep an eye on her from a distance. In the meantime, he lights a cigarette, hoping to finish it before the good doctor returns (look, he was due for one!!). ]

[mombastic]

[ He really might make it. Otome's taking it slow and gradual, only slipping a few times, but catching herself in time before she approaches him.

... And slides right past him, because she's still not very good at stopping. ]

[abhors]

[ There's an empty can of soda on the side and Kogami drops his cigarette in it before skating his way towards her. ]

That was pretty close, I had my doubts for a second.

[mombastic]

You shouldn't underestimate doctors, Kogami-san. We don't stay down easily.

[ Rather, maybe it's just Otome who's stubborn. But she's still pink-cheeked from the effort and beaming and totally pleased with herself. ]

[abhors]

My mistake.

[ Her efforts get a little smile out of him, too. Sometimes the best way to get a workaholic's mind off work is to give them small distractions like these. ]

It looks like you don't stop that easily either. [ Both figuratively and... skating-wise! ]

[mombastic]

Sometimes it's just easier to not think about stopping. [ figuratively. ] And I can't really do it as neatly as you can. [ literally. ]

[abhors]

I suppose it's time for me to deliver my end of the bargain.

Dr. Yanagiya. [ So formal. ] If you have the time, I would like us to meet again at some point in the week, so we can get to know each other more in person. [ There, he got his "glory" by being the one to ask!! Though it's vaguely worded - is it a date? ]

[mombastic]

[ That was the vaguest most formal-- and Otome suddenly laughs, barely managing to refrain from shaking her head at just how bad at this he is. ]

Should I say 'request granted'? I feel like 'yes' wouldn't match your formality well enough, Kogami-san.

[abhors]

[ He rolls with her humor, even though his face is as straight as ever. ]

Should we shake hands on it?

[mombastic]

[ Solemnly extends her hand. Did he think she wouldn't-- ]

Careful, I hear this makes things binding.

[ From an outsider's view, it almost looks like they're doing an actual business deal, especially with the way he carefully takes her hand (she's a doctor, it's valuable!) and shakes it to seal the deal. It's all cool and suave, until-- ]

[ --a snowball hits the side of Kogami's face. Looks like some of the kids are getting too into it outside of the rink. WAS IT GINO???
