The thing about Cerealia is, there really isn't any nature to be found here. Sure, you can go outside the walls of the city and explore the land beyond but who wants to risk a terrible, horrible death just to sniff the flowers? Not you, that's who! CERES understands that, CERES sympathizes, and sometimes CERES decides to take action when such problems arise. As part of the company's current "Healthier and Happier YOU" initiative, they've decided to let everyone get back in touch with nature a little.

Via ViViD.

Of course, this being CERES, the nature they've sent everyone to is more of a swamp. The place is disgusting, a real marvel of ViViD ingenuity and it smells like the dead. There's strange rustling among the leaves from creatures that may or may not want to eat you, and random pits that open up right under your feet with the goal of sending you straight into the marsh. It's not really that fun. There's no welcome sign either, no nothing except for swamplands as far as the eye can see.

Welcome to ViViD!

This is Mosley. One of our programmers forgot to include a welcome greeting for the level this time. How incompetent can you get? He's been fired now, it's fine. Instead, I will greet you today. Lucky you! You've been invited today to participate in CERES's "Healthier and Happier YOU" level where we've combined both physical exercise and relaxing meditation into the ultimate ViViD experience. Isn't that fun? You can... go camping and stuff. Or whatever. I don't... know...

Honestly, I don't even care. Have fun.

//SCENARIOS.EXE

PHASE I

[ 6:00 ] Welcome to your new healthy living training ground! What does a swamp have to do with healthy living, you may ask? Absolutely nothing! To make up for it, CERES has outfitted all players with the proper equipment for their new healthy living lifestyle. They also may or may not have let you keep your shoes based on how benevolent the ViViD gods were being at the time. (Not very.)

Oh, and all newcomers will have something additional on their fancy new yoga shirt. It will be displayed loudly and proudly all over the front and back of it. And if you're one of the few not wearing a shirt, it will be on the back of your pants. As in, your butt. It will be on your butt.

What’s ViViD trying to say, anyway?

Regardless, it probably doesn’t matter as much as finding your way through the swamp. Some sort of dry land would be really nice right now, wouldn't it? You'll have to watch out for the mud that will suck you right down under the marsh, and the creatures with lots of teeth that will never surface from the mud but won't hesitate to snap up an unwary foot or two.

CERES is sure you'll be fine. Totally and completely fine.

PHASE II

[ 8:00 ] Eventually, if you try really, really hard, you’ll make it to a house. Actually, it’s more of a shack, really. If you clamber your way out of the mud and the gunk and the marsh into said shack, you will find it to be empty aside from a table. A table hosting a huge pile of... well, health drinks. See, there's totally a health theme in this level. CERES would never make a ViViD level that wasn't thematically appropriate. Never! Health drinks of all sorts and types and sizes can be found here and there’s even a sign too; it simply says:

Take one.

Well, that seems safe.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to leave said shack until you do take one. And drink it. The door will lock shut and cover itself in more swamp until you do. Yay. Depending on your luck, the drink may do the following to you:

➟ Cause your ViViD experience to glitch. This may involve phasing through walls, seeing everything in 8-bit, or hearing really annoying old video game music everywhere you go.

➟ Cause status effects. This can include suddenly moving incredibly slowly, being turned to stone for a period of time, suddenly being on fire, suddenly being poisoned, etc etc.

➟ Be healthier. Mmm, kale and hummus smoothie. Taste those veggies.
If you try to take more than one, that’s fine too, nobody will stop you, but you probably won’t get lucky more than once.

PHASE III

[ 9:00 ] And back you go, out into the swampy wilderness. Don’t give up! Keep going! Eventually, you’ll find the end of this level. Probably.

Eventually, though, you may stumble across something in the mud and the muck. It’s... a little doll?

In fact, it’s a little doll of one of your most important people (or, alternatively, of someone you absolutely hate). It might be someone in Cerealia currently, or someone who isn’t, but either way, the doll is there and it’s clearly them (covered in mud and all). Be careful, though. If you toss it aside, you’ll suddenly see that important person being tossed aside. If you cut the doll, you'll suddenly see that person bleeding. Even if they aren’t present in Cerealia, whatever happens to that doll, you'll see it happening to them. Is it a hallucination or are they actually there? That's a little more up in the air.

And if they are present in Cerealia, well... doing things to that doll might very well hurt them too -- for real, this time, though.

Be careful! Or don't. You do you, as CERES would say.

PHASE IV

[ 12:00 ] And then, eventually you reach a quiet, swampy area. Not that the rest of the swamp isn't swampy, this area is just extra swampy.

There’s very little happening here in this swampy place; even the birds are no longer squawking. And for a long moment, everything will remain quiet and peaceful, a place of reprieve... until the swamp begins to bubble. Then suddenly, a new friend will burst out of the swamp, showering mud and gunk everywhere.

Without warning, that creature is going to try to grab for the nearest person (it might be you!) and let out a mighty roar when they have them. Then, they'll hold them up to... read the nutrition facts on their shirt? What?

Of course, it will try to gobble you or whoever else it grabs if it finds, say, the salt content to be acceptable (the monster is watching their carbs). If it's not, then they'll just fling you away and move onto the next snack. For those without a handy nutrition facts label on your shirt, well, it might just take a gamble and try to eat you anyway.

Great. A health-conscious monster. That's just what this level needed.

BONUS

[ xx:xx ] Finally, you’re free of the game. Without warning, you’re dumped into Cerealia properly and you’re able to scrub the mud and gunk from your clothing (wait why did that come back with you and where are your normal clothes?). You're able to then make your way to your new place of residence (or old) and...

There is a tiny tree there waiting for you. Isn’t it cute? And if you take care of this tiny tree, it will eventually bear fruit! Tiny fruit. Itty bitty fruit.

Depending on which tiny tree you get, it will be one of the following: a tiny dildo tree, a tiny bacon tree, a tiny kazoo tree, a tiny carolina reaper tree, or a (dumb) tiny hats tree.

Everything will, naturally, be tiny. Enjoy your new healthy CERES gift!

Rise!

[ When she barrels into him he's ready for her, having seen her coming. This level has been disgusting from start to finish, but he's braved his way through it for one reason, and that one reason just ran right into his arms. Not that he knew she, or anyone else from their world, would be there; but just in case. And his caution (hopes?) paid off.

Immediately and without thought he curls one arm protectively around her shoulders, shifting his body so he's between her and the monster. His outfit is, by now, as disgusting as the rest of him, not that he's ever paid it any mind since he got in here. Once he's guarding her he'll take a second to spare her a smile. ]

It's alright. We'll take it together. Izanagi!

[ The last name he cries out as he brings his head back up, and his free hand crushes the necessary tarot card to make his Persona appear. Izanagi-no-Okami slams into the monster with a massive crackle of electricity. ]

[It's instinct that causes her to curl into Yu's (weirdly bare) chest, looking up at him with a sense of both relief and panic all at once.] Senpai! [The greetings and questions can come later. Right now they had a foe to face and just like that she turns back to face the monster that had chosen to follow her. She's a wreck. She's dirty and tired and pissed but none of that matters now that she's found what she's looking for.

There's a tiny smile in response, and she's already shifting again to stand behind him, ready to support him in battle as always. Despite what she's said about how the monster shouldn't be fought alone? She believes Yu can do it. It doesn't hurt that Izanagi's here, and in that same flash of light Kanzeon appears to provide the statistics of what they're facing.]

Electricity's no good, but it's weak to physical attacks! [And salt, weirdly enough, but she's not even sure how to tackle that.] If you can freeze it in place you can knock it out.

[ Yu nods, letting his arm linger for only a moment before he releases her so she can step properly behind her. She's never been a fighter, and it's best if she stays back from combat. If the monster concentrates its attacks on him, all the better. ]

Understood.

[ He looks up again, and Izanagi leaps back before changing course. There's a massive crackling bloom of ice, and the monster screeches before freezing in place. Quickly Yu passes a hand in front of his face with a snap of blue light, and Izanagi is replaced with Arahabaki. This time, Arahabaki is slamming into the monster with Vicious Strike, aiming to deal basically double damage.

The monster goes reeling as the ice shatters, though it doesn't seem to be down and out quite yet. ]

Rise! Where's it at?

[When this is over, she'll glue herself right back to his arm but this is a little more pressing. She's not a combatant. She's always left it up to the rest of the IT, but she can't bring herself to feel scared. She's safe as long as they stick together.

She watches as Izanagi casts Bufudyne, encasing the weird tentacle monster inside a block of ice.]
Woohoo! Direct hit! [She's tracking the monster's health as Yu switches Personas, watching Arahabaki knock down a good chunk of its strength. Of course her victory's short-lived as soon as she sees it's standing up again.] Ugh! Stay down already! [Give her a moment to get a better look, frowning at what she's seeing.] It's still going strong. Better finish it off before it calls for back-up.

[ He can't help but feel a rush of mixed nostalgia and also relief at the familiar way she says Direct hit! It's only really been about two-and-change months since he last saw her, by his estimation, but so much has happened in that time it feels like it's been longer. Plus, in a place like Cerealia, there's no guarantee you ever will...

No. He needs to focus. Rather than switch Personas again, Yu keeps to Arahabaki and maintains the assault. Using Vicious Strike repeatedly is a drain on him, but it does a huge amount of damage, and to get this monster out of the way quickly, it seems worth it. He nods firmly, and whips an arm out to one side. Arahabaki takes his cue and dives in for two more Strikes in a row. Yu's left shutting one eye in a wince and pressing a hand to his aching chest - that hurts, dammit - but it does the job. After the final blow, the monster topples over and doesn't get back up.

Yu releases a shuddering sigh. If he were smart, he'd switch Personas right away and heal up, but he has more pressing concerns. He turns instead to look at the girl behind him, his smile at once curious and concerned. ]

Looks like we did it.

[The repeated use of Vicious Strike takes the monster down bit by bit and as she's tracking its health she's being careful to monitor Yu's, too. The problem is that they're alone. There's no one she can call to to say that Yu's health is low and needs someone to heal him. It's up to her right now to keep him safe. Their whole team might not be here, but she's always done what she could to protect her friends. That won't ever change.

There's a startled gasp as she watches him take a pretty big hit, her mind immediately flashing 'danger!' even though he still has a good chunk of his health in-tact. Healing Wave only heals a small amount, but she knows it's effective when she feels it wash over her, too. Kanzeon's dismissed shortly after, leaving Rise standing just behind Yu. The monster's down, slowly sinking further into the swamp and disappearing from sight. It's just the two of them now.

And he gives her that look. There's that look and something in her breaks just a little before she rushes forward, arms flinging around him in a tight hug. It's been longer than she's liked since she's last seen him, nearly two months since he'd left Inaba. She knew he was going to return for Golden Week like he promised but things were still lonely without him. they all felt it.]

Nice moves, Senpai. [There's a teasing sound to her voice but it's drowned out by the relief of finding him finally. It's about then that Yu might also notice that there's a small doll dangling from one of Rise's hands and now lightly hitting him in the back.] You're still kinda low on health...are you okay?

[ The Healing Wave has him breathing a little easier. He straightens, lowering the arm he had pressed to his chest, and is about to say something else when she's throwing her arms around him. Yu can't say much to that. After a beat, he wraps his arms around her in turn in a gentle hug. ]

Hey, it's good to see you too. [ With quiet humor. He'll release her after a moment, placing his hands on her shoulders, though he won't step back. ] I'm alright. As long as that thing is really down...

[ Once the monster's dead and down for long enough to count as the battle being over, something happens: Izanagi's Victory Cry kicks in, healing Yu completely. He takes a deep breath once it happens, feeling a lot better. ]

[Thank you for humoring her, Yu. She's been on a mission to find her friends since she first was dropped in that garbage heap of a city and now she's spent the whole day trekking through a swamp. She'll whine and complain about it for a while, but she also knows that if she had to she'd do it again. Anything to get to them and make sure they were safe. When they pull apart she's staying just as close, glancing at the swamp behind them and taking notice of the bubbles still appearing on the surface. She doesn't sense immediate danger, at least.

She feels him breathe in deeply and knows that his health's gone back up which is good enough for her. Looking away from the swamp she faces Yu again, arms still loose around his shoulders and her hand grips around the doll's wrist a little too tight. Sorry, Senpai.]

You're way stronger than it is. [#admiration.] But we should get going just in case. [She says, as she makes absolutely zero moves to go anywhere. She's still smiling up at him for a brief moment, taking in his expression and making sure he's totally fine...before she starts to talk.] Do you have any idea how long I've been looking for you?! First they threw me in the trash heap and now a swamp! This is disgusting!

[ He doesn't mind that she keeps hanging onto him. He's pretty used to that, actually. He keeps one hand on one of her shoulders, letting the other hand drop as he turns his head again to watch the monster disappear into the muck. Gross.

Yu looks back at her as she starts to rant. That's just like Rise... not that he can blame her. ]

A trash heap? [ He might normally think she was exaggerating, but he wouldn't put it past CERES to dump her into literal garbage. He also can't help but notice a strange squeezing sensation around his wrist... what was that? Also, what was that doll she was holding? ] Straight into a swamp... that's pretty unfortunate. They made Yosuke and I play through some video games when we got here. [ He won't mention they were life size, lethal, and actually pretty upsetting. ] Come on. If we stick together, I'm sure we can get out of here pretty quickly.

[All she can keep doing is reminding herself that the two of them are safe as long as they're together. The swamp's still pretty low on her list of places to be, but Yu being calm about all of this makes her realize this isn't nearly as dangerous as it could be. At the repetition of the trash heap she nods, pulling out her best pout. The look is most definitely over-exaggerated, but she's very serious.]

It was awful. The city was eroding and there was trash everywhere and I fell in the sewers before dumpster-diving. [But she nods at the suggestion, grabbing Yu's arm and starting to tug him in a direction she thinks might help them get out.]

Video games...like Void Quest? [She's trying to grasp how all of this is happening by comparing it to things she's seen before.] Why are they making us do this anyway?
