[closed] So before they get to you, do what you've gotta do
Who: Hiro Hamada, Yu Narukami and Dipper Pines
When: Morning of IC 5/17
Where: Hiro's workshop at the tech and auto shop
What: A genius, a wildcard, and a mystery lover walk into a shop and put together an information-sharing ring.
Rating/Warning: Will update if needed
[He'd spoken to Yu a few days prior about everything and he'd passed on the message to bring Dipper with him back to the workshop the morning of the 17th. It gave them all time to recover from the carnival and get their bearings together.
Now that Yu knew of what he and Dipper were up to, Hiro felt it was time to get his friends together and really start hashing out how they would be dispersing information among the colony. It needed to be down to a specific science. They couldn't screw this up.
And it's for that reason he and Baymax are in Hiro's small workshop bright and early before anyone else is even at the shop, Mochi sprawled on his desk (specifically for Yu) and with what looked like breakfast from McCeres. There were piles of notes and documents and tools around him and when Baymax ushered his friends into the shop he wasted little time in handing the pair of them a set of glasses each, slipping his own onto his face.]
I know it's early, but we're kinda working on limited time here. We really need to start figuring out what we're gonna do next.

At least he didn't get duped into thinking there was a fire this time.
As soon as they enter the workshop, Dipper slides a pair of glasses on before he even says anything. Obviously, CERES would know where they were going - and when their signals suddenly dropped off the radar, they'd know something was up. Dipper didn't want to give them any more to work with than they already had. ]
I guess the first question is how soon can we do whatever comes next? I mean, how fast can you make these? [ Tapping the glasses. ]
Oh - and, uh, good morning.
[ #socialcues ]

He'll slip his glasses on too, a hidden smile playing briefly around his lips at the nostalgic familiarity associated with putting on a pair of glasses in order to solve a mystery. Neither of his friends here will understand that, but Yosuke and Rise will, when the time comes. There's only so many precautions they can take, and at some point, they'll be keeping their pairs of glasses - they'll all be safer then. For now, this is the best they can do.
While Dipper addresses Hiro, Yu notices Mochi on the desk. Don't mind him, boys. He'll just... be over here... kinda... doing... something...
By the time he speaks up, he's got a fat cat cradled in his arms, and speaks over Mochi's head like this is totally normal and acceptable. ]
Like I said before, I'm happy to pitch in to help however I can. I'm sure we both are, if we can speed the process up at all.
no subject
Baymax meanwhile is gathering chairs for their guests and also making sure everybody's comfortable and okay.]
I filled Yu in a couple of days ago on what we're doing. [He blows out a breath of air, his bangs flying upward for a moment.] I can make one pair probably every couple of days if I have all the materials. I'm getting a lot better at cutting the glass and laying in the filters to block the signal but it still takes time. And credits. It's sort of why I'm thinking we're gonna have to do this in phases instead of in a mass release like I'd originally planned. The first pair took a really long time to actually get built.
[He moves, pausing to take a bite of what looks like a breakfast sandwich as he wipes his hands on his shorts and reaches for a notebook to hand over to...well, Dipper, technically, since Yu has a cat.] I've thought about making one big sheet of glass and then just cutting out lenses as needed. Like baking cookies only nothing's getting set on fire. It's the frames that take time, too.
no subject
He takes the notebook Hiro hands him, nodding along as he starts flipping through the pages. ]
If we can help you build more pairs, and then the people who get those pairs can help us build more pairs... [ But then you might run into quality control issues. This isn't something they can afford to mess up. The glasses are everything. ]
I guess we need to figure exactly how many people are in on this thing - and who.
no subject
Personally I'd like to keep the building to just us. You guys have seen the prototypes and it'll be easier and faster to show you how to work with the materials than trying to constantly teach new people. We sort of talked about who we wanted to include on this thing first, but that list has changed...and I'm not even sure who you think should be included, Yu.
[The cat doesn't count.]
no subject
He just casually cradles the cat while this serious discussion is going on. ]
If you think that's the best way to get them built, that's fine with me. Three pairs of hands will still be faster than one. We can help you make them, and I've got some credits saved up for parts. As for who to tell... yeah, I've been thinking about that.
[ He'll take a seat in one of the chairs Baymax provided - and settle Mochi in his lap, don't you judge him - before continuing. ]
If it's alright with you both, I'd like to include Yosuke and Rise. They're from my team back home. They helped me solve the murders in Inaba, and I know they're trustworthy. Minato-san would make a valuable ally as well. [ He's only barely smiling as he talks, but the look in his eye challenges both his younger friends to tease him when everyone in the room knows he asked Minato out just yesterday. ]
As for others... Hiro, I assume you're including Tadashi and Ruby. [ A beat as he thinks. ] Then there's Athena, and Kyoko Kirigiri. That should cover it for people I think need to absolutely be included. What about you two?
no subject
I've still got lots of credits in a savings account Mabel left me, too, if funding them becomes an issue.
[ But now that it sounds like they've got that at least somewhat squared away, he glances up. When Yu's got Mochi settled in his lap, Dipper passes the notebook off to him. ]
Those all sound fair to me. [ He's hardly surprised Yu would want to include Minato - don't think he doesn't notice that smile - but Dipper would have included him anyway. ] I'd add Yang, but she can sort of be grouped with Ruby. [ He assumes few secrets are kept between the two of them. ] There's Edgeworth, too. He's been doing his own investigation and had a lot of interesting things to say when we talked about it.
no subject
With what they'd discovered the previous evening with the mask, they really needed to move on this and he's grabbing another notebook to scrawl out the names.]
I didn't know you had another friend show up from your world. That's fine, I trust your judgment. Athena's absolutely priority, too. I trust Athena a lot, and she's the one who helped get that timeline organized. She's been here for ages. [He knows Kyoko very vaguely, but again, he has to trust Yu's judgment.
While initially he'd tell Dipper to save those credits, he's starting to feel the strain on his own bank account by funding this project. Dipper's living with Yu. He's safe.] I'm hoping funding doesn't become a huge issue but it might in the future.
I don't know Edgeworth, but I remember you mentioned him last time. [And later that morning after this meeting, he'd wind up speaking to Edgeworth himself.] Yang can be grouped with Ruby, and they can decide how much they want to tell Weiss. [Weiss is still terrifying, news at 11.] Thing is...I'm thinking we need to break this into a couple of groups. We cannot paint targets on everybody's backs. That's not fair. There's a couple of people I think should know a lot of things, but maybe not everything. [He'll explain who those people are in a moment.] Does...that make sense?
no subject
Miles Edgeworth? I know him. He's an intelligent guy. I agree he and Yang should be included. Anyway, yeah. [ Now he looks up. ] There's other people I'd like to get involved, but they probably shouldn't know everything that we know just yet. They'd have to have a pair of glasses on while we talked to them, but we could just lend them someone else's pair to conserve resources. As long as that's the case, I have a few other names I'd like to add. Is that along the lines of what you're thinking, Hiro?
no subject
...Rei, definitely. I know she'd argue with me that she and her friends can handle themselves but I can't compromise them like that when Rei's already a target for other reasons. My friend Roxas, too...and Mary. But I think Mary should know everything anyway. Let me think about it. What about you guys?
[What's clear here is that he's not intentionally slighting people. He firmly believes this is the best course of action instead of charging in with one giant group this time.]
no subject
[ He's not trying to be cynical, just realistic. In Dipper's case, those two things often go hand in hand, but he hardly expects that CERES will let them get away with this forever. Eventually, they'd have to figure something else out.
He leans against the table, arms crossed. ] There's Phoenix Wright, too, but Athena will probably tell him. I think they're pretty close. If we're including Rei in that group, she'll probably tell Ami and Minako...and if Roxas and Mary are going to know, then Xion should, too.
[ Because they all live together. Not because he has any bias at all. ]
no subject
Unlike his friends, he sees no need to call Dipper out for wanting to include Xion. See, guys? Maturity. Instead he only nods again, closing the notebook and passing it back to Hiro. (He devotes a little more attention now to stroking Mochi's head.) ]
Inaba Himeko has been pretty helpful to me in the past. She's great with information, and I know she'd like to help. Dipper, you've spoken to Rapunzel, right? She said she knew you. She only just got here, but she's already got theories. I'm going to talk to her again soon, but if she's onto something, she might really be able to help us.
[ There's a beat, and he pauses. And pauses. And then his eyes hood. Here, he looks directly at Hiro. ]
... Katsura-san. I'd like for him to be able to help.
[ Yu-san.
Are you inviting me to trust in you? ]
no subject
And screw maturity, he's still smirking in Dipper's direction anyway. Right. No bias at all. Mochi purrs thanks to Yu's constant attention and Hiro nods along with his friends' suggestions.]
...I agree with Katsura. I know you guys might have different reasons but...he's the one who really pushed me to start looking into what CERES was doing to us. And he was on the last raid with me. I trust him a lot even if he's...sort of crazy. [He bites his lip, thinking again.] I'd like to include some other people I've met recently, too, in the list of people who should at least have some clue of what's going on. Mitsuru Kijiro, Trowa Barton, and Jack Frost. The first two are people that I think could really help us out in finding more clues about this place. Mitsuru's really smart and kinda scary, and Trowa was part of the military back home. And I didn't meet him recently but Jack's been around for a while. He was on that first raid as part of a separate group, and he was close to Hiccup.
[A moment of silence for Hiccup, really.] ...I'd like to keep Sorey and Mikleo up to date, too. Especially since Sorey just got back from the Nexus. Figure those two could tell the other seraphs, Alisha and Rose. I don't know if you've met any of them. ....and also Saiduq. He's given me a lot to think about and research lately. He can choose what he wants to tell Hiro and Otome.
[He's shifting to pick up a paper cup full of coffee, sipping it to make himself stop for a few minutes.] It's just a matter of sorting the list into people who should know everything we know, a second tier who knows almost everything, and a third tier of who the people in the second tier will tell. Is this getting too complicated? [He'll just flip the notebook open again to start scribbling down a bracket of who would tell whom.]
no subject
I'm with you on Inaba. Rapunzel is...yeah, I met her. She's...definitely got a head full of ideas, I'll give you that much.
[ He keeps listening as names are rattled off, though he pushes himself upright at the mention of Katsura's name, looking between Yu and Hiro like there's some kind of joke he's missing out on here.
Granted, Dipper had only talked to him once, but that conversation had been...unusual, to say the least. It's not that he found Katsura distrustful - just unpredictable. But if Yu and Hiro were willing to trust him, Dipper would follow suit. ]
I think complicated is just the way it has to be if we want to be at all efficient. Fortunately a lot of the people in this list know each other. It's just a matter of sorting it out - like a phone tree or something.
[ Though he's admittedly a little uncertain of the idea. There are already a lot of people on this list that he doesn't know personally, and while he trusts Hiro's and Yu's opinions, how much was too much? ]
The question is...do we draw the line somewhere? I mean - if we keep spreading the information, how long before it ends up in the hands of someone willing to sell us out to CERES? The more people involved, the higher the risk that everything we're doing will be compromised.

Flynn Scifo
Lili An
Other than that, he keeps his peace until Dipper raises his question. ]
Yeah. I think we can trust the people we've been talking about so far, but we need to be sure about what information we're giving everyone. We don't want to overwhelm them, either, and we're not certain what they each know. Maybe what would be best is if we write down what we want everyone to know, and decide from there.
no subject
You mean like...maybe making an actual list. Like the timeline Athena and the others made. A document, sort of, but not something we can store on the CereVice? [He glances almost woefully at the journal.] My notes are pretty scattered...I've been meaning to get them organized but more things keep happening so I've been throwing it together when I can. You really think that might be best?
no subject
What exactly do we want to share, though? We've learned a lot since we started investigating. There will also be more that others might have to bring to the table. How do we incorporate that, then. Update when we get something new and just send out a new sheet?
no subject
Handwriting everything would take a while, though... think we could use your laptop, Hiro? We compile a document, encrypt it using one of Dipper's ciphers, and print it out. Anyone who reads it has to have a pair of glasses on.
[ He taps a finger on his chin. ] We'd have to update it manually, but I don't think that's too big a deal once the initial document is done. As for what to share... Hiro, you've been on both forays into the CERES headquarters, right? There's also our trip into the jungle. Plus, each of us can add whatever theories we have based on the evidence we've seen. That's a lot to go on as it is.
no subject
Updates wouldn't be bad. We can have one document solely dedicated to this and any time any of us have updates we can come here, put on the glasses and work on it. I'll have to password-encrypt it too just in case. [But then Yu asks that question and he slows down again.] ...I was on two of them, yeah. There were the tours that happened right before I got here and I have a little information on those. Katsura was on those, I think. Yang and Phoenix too. We have both trips to the jungle, my two trips to the tower, some of the theories me and Dipper talked about...
[A low, long exhale.] This thing's gonna be massive by the time we're done, but it's the only way we can keep it organized.
no subject
Better to give people too much information than not enough, I think. I mean, maybe some of our ideas aren't going to go anywhere, but we won't really know unless we follow them, right? And there might be something someone else has learned that can answer a few of our questions already.
[ Which brings him to another idea he's been tossing around... ]
What do you two think about having in-person meetings with the group where we can actually discuss things? Glasses mandatory, obviously, so it might be awhile before we can get everyone together. But it'd be a great way to hash out some of our theories.
EVENING 5/20;
After pooling all of the information they felt was safe to share (all four being careful not to attach names to certain masks), it became clear that some patterns were easier to figure out than others.
-The masks with bloodied fingerprints were tied to people who had killed someone in their past. This information was confirmed to Hiro by Mikleo, but Hiro did not share names. No names were shared by any of the group of people who possessed this mask for the sake of privacy. However, they were able to say it was a verbal confirmation and a solid explanation.
-The masks with the blood dripping down them were also confirmed to be tied to people who had died. The quartet figured out it was people who had died either at home (via Hiro's knowledge of Leon and Mikleo and Minato's knowledge of Shinjiro) or people who had died in Cerealia (Minato's own mask.)
-The cracked mask seemed obvious. It was clearly associated with masks that had been broken. However, there were other masks that were cracked that hadn't been tampered with the way Yu's had. Interestingly, they were all three girls and all closely associated with Yu.
-It was about that point that Minato pointed out that the masks seemed to be tied to traits of people or actions people had done. Murder, dying, or breaking the mask. That seemed like a great theory until they got to the next mask.
-Dipper spoke with Miles Edgeworth who reported that the mask he possessed was covered in bloody fingerprints. However, reports from Edgeworth also gave them the information that one Ema Sky had a mask which possessed a sad face that progressively became sadder. Minato reported that Mitsuru had a similar mask, and due to Hiro's conversation with Adelina (who had the bloody prints on her mask), Alice Lidell also possesses a sad mask. Hiro had no problem telling the group that Ruby and Tadashi also had a similar mask. With such a various group of people it was hard to conclude anything more than the fact that the mask was disappointed in these people for not doing something. The idea was shelved for later investigation.
-Hiro's own mask was another that perplexed them. With a barcode that progressively grew they couldn't think of what that might be associated with since it wasn't tied to anything. Ruby had told Hiro Yang had a similar mask and Inaba spoke with Yu and Hiro as well about the masks. It took time, but after offering the information that Yang built her own weapons and realizing Inaba also worked with computers, they came to the vague conclusion that it might be associated with tech. Arguably, that was a stretch since they were three varying levels of tech. There was not enough information to draw a firm conclusion.
-With three of the four boys taken care of, they turned to the subject of Dipper's mask. The ivy pattern was spreading wild and fast but like with the blood the mask was as smooth as ever. Yu had spoken with Jaune Arc who also had a similar mask. While Dipper and Jaune may have some similar personality traits, it wasn't something that could be considered evidence. Yu and Minato brought up that it may be tied to the jungle, since Dipper had been on both jungle excursions…but if that were true, why didn't the rest of them get it? There was not enough information to draw a firm conclusion.
-Rise had spoken to Yu and informed him that Rei Hino and her friends all had a feather-covered mask, which is the mask she herself possessed. Rapunzel had also reported having a feathered mask. The boys hashed out ideas of what it could mean (it could be tied to spiritual beings or people who are spiritual, seeing how Rei is a priestess), but due to too few Persona-users having a similar mask and Hiro not owning up to the fact that Rei and her friends are Sailor senshi (and not believing Personas to be anything spiritual), they were unable to really conclude what this meant at all.
-As a sidenote, it was about then the boys realized Rapunzel's mask was the only one with two different effects. It's ominous as hell and now they're all worried about Rapunzel. Thanks Rapunzel.
-The last mask was a gray one that progressively grew darker. Hiro had spoken to Mary and learned that she and Roxas both possessed this mask, but they were the only ones they'd spoken to with such masks. Hiro knew that Mary wasn't technically human, but he's unaware of Roxas's Nobody status. There was a joke that it was associated with people with blonde hair but again, there wasn't enough evidence to even try and figure it out (especially with Hiro refusing to talk about Mary being a Medusa.) There was not enough information to draw a firm conclusion.
Overall, they had pulled the data from over twenty people. It was more than enough to start with but the fact that there were some things they couldn't figure out disturbed all of them. They argued and discussed and hashed out ideas for a few more hours before Yu raised a hand and concluded that they weren't getting any further. This was the information they had, this was the information they'd have to give out to their friends. Hiro and Dipper had argued and tried to keep going but Minato was the voice of reason and agreed with Yu.
This was all they could do for now. It would have to be enough.
