[Even despite his first attempt at this didn't really yield much in the way of results, Ryuuga's undeterred. Even if he doesn't seem to have to worry about Gates or Inga for the most part, he's still checking things out around the city when he can. There's multiple ways that someone can run into him:

a.) He's back in his Knight uniform, patrolling alleyways and other shady areas for trouble, breaking up fights if necessary, but always going for disarming an opponent quickly over anything else. Though with some of these fights, he does look like he's having a good time. Almost feels right, honestly.

b.) Some might see a streak jumping across rooftops and ledges (or run past you if you're up on the roofs as well), the glint of gold unmistakable as a figure in wolf-like armor takes great leaps in a huge hurry. Do you dare follow?

c.) Or you may have seen him in one of his few moments of respite, eyes closed and resting for a few moments as he's leaned up against an empty wall or bench before he starts up again. He's used to running on little to no sleep considering his job back home, so this isn't too much different.

d.) Others might see him hanging around the edge of the labyrinth, looking incredibly uncomfortable but still determined. This place creeps the hell out of him for sure, but he can't help but feel the need to investigate. He's got his duties to think of, after all - even if they're technically moot due to the nature of this place.]

Well, it's a gateway of sorts for the monsters I usually fight. [That comparison's actually not completely off the mark ...]

They use those Gates as a means to possess people. [Though his expression is actually turning a bit cloudy at this point. he's not sure if he really should continue, considering how gruesome Horrors tended to be by nature alone.]

[There's a definite hitch of fear in there on her saying the word "ghosts".]

[Surprisingly, no. He does notice the slight tension in her voice when ghosts are mentioned, but he shakes his head.]

More along the lines of demons than ghosts.

[Thankfully he's interrupted from explaining further when the barista comes back with their orders.]

[She's not sure if demons are better or not but at least her latte is here and it looks delicious. (And more importantly: not occult or even vaguely ghostly.)

Shiho waits patiently until everything has been set down before picking up her spoon and stirring her drink round and round and round in order to make it seem like she's not affected by ghosts at all.]

...Is that supposed to be better?

[Ryuuga winces before he takes a bit of one of his sandwiches, using his attempt at eating to help him figure out how to really word this. Or just distract himself? He's not even sure himself.]

It's the truth? Though there doesn't seem to be any signs of them coming around, so I might just be being paranoid. Kind of a bad habit.

Generally the Gates come from objects charged with negative karma. It's hard to really tell unless you have a sense for that - or tools that can detect it.

If people start disappearing mysteriously or someone seems to be acting more aggressive, that might be a sign as well? But that's apparently pretty common across the board, it's not limited to Horrors.

That's just how it is for us, I dunno.

Basically. I wouldn't go so far as saying there's prophecies - but I did make a promise to someone close to me a long time ago that I'd get stronger.

[There's a small smile on his face as he says that, though it seems to be tinged with sadness. He quickly snaps out of that, though. No point dwelling on that, and especially in front of someone he barely knew.]

Doesn't that basically make you some sort of shounen manga hero? Next thing you're going to tell me that you also ate a weird fruit that gave you powers or something.

I guess it does if you look at it that way. [He lets out a chuckle.]

No weird fruit, promise. Just a lot of training and a secret weapon or two.

[Some of his fellow Order members might consider themselves more than human, but that just put them out of touch with who they were before everything, to him.]

Thank goodness he seemed more comfortable now though.

Trust me, everything after that kinda made up for it in the craziness department, for better and worse.

That's not very characteristic of a horror story, though. Don't you guys usually start with some kind of horrible murder to set the tone?

[Not that she gets scared of those unless ghosts figure into it somehow.]

[Though honestly he could see why people would think his life is like a movie or something - to an outsider, the Makai Order and everything it entails is nothing short of a nuthouse.

[She can definitely sympathize with what it must be like to be so formulaic that people no longer had to watch in order to know what was going to happen.

And it's not meta until Shiho starts telling him about their artist and why he needs to stop putting plot-important details in the four-panel comics that come at the end of each book.]

That coming from a guy who has a "usual" order at this place. Or does boring not count towards food?
