Always Believe in the Heart of the Cards Except When They Tell You to Kill People

Welcome to CERES Research Tower’s latest event! For all you new folk queuing outside of the conference room where you were just made to sit through a lovely power point presentation, you will be asked to stay a bit longer and test out some games in their Game Testing Center. It’s a giant space located in the basement level filled to the brim with cubicles for everyone to sit in and enjoy their newest array of pop-up games. The games themselves will be in holo(gm) form and will feature suggestions from CEO’s post, including a simplified, 8-bit version of Tetris, Baseball, Soda Smash, etc. Characters can control the game through moving their fingers and tapping them against the holo(gm) screens.

Surrounding the cubicles will be tables of food and more food for characters to partake in. It’s all safe this time. No mind-altering candy corn or gut-exploding Knight Burgers. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the party. For those who have been in Cerealia for a while, they should have received an invitation to the event and an offer of 1,000 credits just for participating. So come on down and bring a friend or ten! Meanwhile, CEO has a small welcome for everyone-

“Good Morning and thank you all for coming!

We have been expecting you. We hope you will enjoy what we’ve put together today. Ever since we got your feedback on << RAINBOW NARWHAL MELEE >>, we’ve been developing new games for all of you to enjoy. We’ve also tried to draw in some things from your worlds. We hope to hear more feedback from you in the future.

In the meantime, feel free to sample our food, generously provided to us by TGICERES, a moderately-priced family restaurant located in the Shopping District."

PHASE I
[ xx:xx ] Music lightly wafts from the speakers as the showroom opens. Julius Vincere, CERES’ CEO, delivers the opening announcement before leaving the room. He’ll be watching through all the video cameras placed around the room, so be on your best behavior! You will be guided to one of the many cubicles where you will sit and wait for a screen to pop up with a game. Once that game is defeated, another will pop up and another and another until your character gets hungry/has to pee/is so done with this shit.
PHASE II
[ xx:xx ] Among the game rotations is a simple 8-bit fortune telling game starring Aria, the fortune teller. Come be enchanted by her mysterious wiles as she reads your future. She will do some 8-bit arm motions before summoning a ring of cards that will float around her. Characters will be encouraged to pick a card -any card. Once one has been selected, it will turn around slowly and unveil a card from the major arcana. Aria will then give your character their fortune, and that will be that. End of game. Onto the next!
PHASE III
[ xx:xx ] You’ve left the testing center, and the evening has passed. As you wake up to perform your normal daily tasks, a niggling urge emerges at the back of your mind. It’s faint at first, just a whisper of a suggestion that pokes at your brain like a mosquito bite. However, that bite starts to grow bigger and become infectious. As the day wears on, you find that one little suggestion escalating. The next day is even worse. It starts to dominate your every thought, making you carry out actions you never thought yourself capable of. Who is this person in the mirror? Who have you become?
PHASE IV
[ xx:xx ] By day three, the impulse is now a full-blown addiction. It’s set into your psyche completely. You’ve become something else entirely –the embodiment of the card. You will be acting out everything without anymore resistance, and it won’t stop until the clock strikes midnight. That’s when you’ll reel back to your senses, and when it’ll all have felt like the worst dream ever. Or a nightmare really.
BONUS
[ why:o'clock ] Among all the games present, there is also an 8-bit version of CERESLearn. Yes, you remember the magical game that won your hearts over not too long ago. It will come complete with the same rules. You choose a subject, you choose an 8-bit teacher among the three (Astor), (Hilda), or (UN-Zippy), and you watch them as they try to erotically teach you what you want to learn. Is that an 8-bit boob or her arm? Who knows? But beware… as you may remember, these teachers house a very terrible secret.

They will transform into an 8-bit giant bug that will chase around your protag as you guide them to run away with your finger, but you can also flick the bug on the holo(gm) screen to send them away for good. Those who figure out that little cheat code will immediately receive a special real-time shoulder rub as a reward from a robot that looks eerily like a carbon copy of their teacher of choice.

Welcome to CEREALIA's latest event and intro post. For your convenience, we have compiled a post detailing what's going on right here and feel free to consult the FAQ if needed. Please leave any lingering questions in the OOC post, and we'll answer them as soon as we can. If this post goes into overflow, we will make a new one to deal with the ever-hated captcha! Worry not!

[ If they had stopped and talked, maybe this could have been avoided. But when you challenge a knight, a honest to god, pulled the sword out of the stone knight to honorable combat, then there is little Saber can do to back down. She doesn't bring out Excalibur, instead staying as she is. She doesn't feel magic, or any sort of thing from the other girl, though she knows she could be taking a chance underestimating her. ]

This will do.

[ She's talented in many forms of swordsmanship, but a wooden sword is more apt to her tastes than a shinai. With a nod, she reaches for the hilt, to take it into her own hand. ]

I would give you one chance to rescind your challenge. [ Saber already takes a fighting stance, her hands on the sword as if it were a broadsword. ]

[There is definitely no magic on Peko's end, and if confronted with it, she really won't have any idea what to do. She does take careful note of how the other girl holds the sword, analyzing her grip even as her own hands tighten around the hilt of her shinai. Peko's grip is noticeably different, her stance a little more narrow, hands spaced more widely apart. Kendo is a little different from how one would use a broadsword, after all.]

I am interested to see what you can do, [she offers simply, settling into her stance and readying herself to see if the other will attack first.]

[ The weapon in Saber's hand strengthens, though to a normal human they might not see it. Saber's ability is to make any sword she holds into a magical weapon, though not quite on the level of the legendary Excalibur. She wishes a fair fight against this girl, as honorable combat would entail, but she does not want the sword to break on her first strike either.

She doesn't wait. Like a breeze she is standing still one moment and then dashing at her opponent. Her sword swings almost inhumanly fast, a handful of strikes not meant to disable, but to test the other's ability. ]

[A blink, and Saber's gone. A hiss of air through Peko's teeth, and then she's moving faster than she'd anticipated having to move. The first blow lands to the sound of a pained grunt, but the second and those after are neatly blocked she presses forward, stepping to the inside and trying to return quick strikes of her own.]

What have you done to the sword? [she manages shortly, continuing to attempt to gain the advantage. There's no way Peko could see anything, but the resistance of the shinai against wood feels wrong with every blow she blocks.]

[ Saber is not surprised by Peko's parries, it's what she expected. A swordsman of any caliber would not have had Peko's stance, nor those eyes that were focused on Saber's body and not her blade. But she is more than expectant of the counter attack, her wooden sword almost impossible coming to meet each one, using only the most minimal of force to deflect them away from her as if they were nothing. ]

I have strengthened it, so that it would no break. [ Her answer is simple and concise, though she sort of leaves the question of does magic exist up to Peko to ask herself. ] You form is perfect, you are clearly a worthy opponent.

[ She doesn't counter just yet, leaving a small distance between the two of them, just enough distance that the ends of their blades could almost touch. ]

[Peko stills when Saber does, keeping that distance without lowering her guard. She accepts the compliment with a nod and answers,] As are you.

Explain how you strengthened it.

[For the moment, at least, it's interesting enough to distract her somewhat from the overpowering need to fight and prove her own personal strength.]

man those were some bad typos im sorry!

[personal profile] invisibleair 2015-01-19 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
It is a type of magecraft. I poured my prana into the sword.

[ Again, she explains, without much in the way of a real explanation. She did it with magic. It's stronger now. In a fight like this, no matter how evenly or unevenly the match, speaking too much could be a danger. She expects an honorable fight from Peko, so she imagines she wouldn't attack in the middle of her explanation, but it never hurts to be careful. ]

Come! Show me your technique!
perfectstrike: (fierce)

you're fine you're fine!!

[personal profile] perfectstrike 2015-01-20 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[That isn't an explanation at all! Peko's only left with more questions, but at Saber's demand, she sets them aside for now. Another kind of magic... she's seen far too many strange things recently to dismiss it entirely, but it doesn't mean she's comfortable with it.

She doesn't answer verbally, instead snapping to the offensive, the shinai slicing through the air as efficiently as a steel blade as she strikes several times. There's no wasted motion; blows that don't come close enough to even try to connect are meant as feigns for lower or higher strikes. The blade really does seem like little more than an extension of her arm as she tries to force Saber back, meaning to try to limit her movements by backing her against a wall.

Through it all, her expression doesn't change, fiercely intense yet devoid of any real emotion.]

thanks!

[personal profile] invisibleair 2015-01-20 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Magic isn't something that even Saber understands truly well. She has it inside of her, she is surrounded by it, and she can even use some herself, though it's not as simple as that. After all, there's a difference between the spells Merlin could cast and her own abilities. Still, she wants this to be a fair fight, as honorable combat should be. So if this girl is a normal human without magical assistance, than to do anything more than strengthening the weapon she was loaned, then it would be unfair in her mind.

Saber does not retreat. Her feet are planted on the ground, her practice sword coming in short arcs to defend the strikes. This girl is above a level Saber would expect from someone her age. Despite Saber's own appearance as a high school girl, she is still stuck in her ways about many things.

She's fought on many battlefields before, and her instincts have never steered her wrong. She knows the layout of this battlefield, so to speak, she knows she cannot corner herself. And so when she sees an opening in Peko's offensive she sidesteps through a downward slash, following it with her two handed swing to the girl's midsection from her side. ]
