[Ooh sweet potatoes. Has he ever had figs before? It's tasty sweet, though! Even if he ends up dropping the rest of it in the bowl. Slippery...]

Family gatherings...that's very thoughtful of you, Koumei-dono! Are family gatherings usually special affairs like this? [With special family gathering foods and everything!]

They can be-- when you have a big family.

[procuring a spoon, he handed it off to Nakigitsune and took a seat so he could speak to the both of them.]

Between all of my siblings, their retainers, and their spouses, there's at least three dozen of us in total-- and that is only factoring in a guest or two per person. The hallways and the rest of the palace in the capitol would certainly not be empty if we ever did find reason to have such a gathering. With the current political climate, however, such occassions are rare.

[Thank goodness for spoons...now he can safely nibble at it without fear of dropping again.

Also lifting the spoon over to share with fox! It may not be a large potato fig thing, but they can both manage with tiny nibbles.]

...Like the Toushirous. [Referring to the three dozen siblings.] Your palace sounds as lively as our citadel! It's quite nice, isn't it? Being able to enjoy so much lively company.

It can be, yes. [He said, smiling fondly as he thought on the pleasant times that shone like brilliant gems in a time of war.] And it's why I'm glad to you and your friends for letting Kouha and I stay here. Neither of us would know what to do with ourselves if we live on our own.

Nakigitsune and I were alone for quite a long time before we joined our companions here...it really is much better to have companionship outside of ourselves.

[Naki lifts his eyes up from the now-empty spoon, looking over at the smiling Koumei.]

You're good company.

[The seeming young man and the fox were as inscrutable as always, but it took a man accustomed to subtlties to appreciate the depth of the sentiments that the duo held.]

Thank you, [Koumei said, gracious as ever.] I find the both of you to be excellent company as well.

[yaayaa]

We're glad you think so! [says the smallest fox, tail waving cheerfully.]

Ah, but now that I think of it--are human families usually quite so large? Three dozen certainly sounds like a lot! [They might've misunderstood that bit with servants and guests, but.]

OOPS I LOST THIS

I'm not entirely certain if it is or isn't, [Koumei admitted, in a subtle show that he had been somewhat sheltered as a child.]

But, if we count everyone properly, I've got eleven siblings and over half of them are married. Their spouses, along with family friends or other guests, can easily make the numbers rise very quickly.

[He's just going to leave out the fact that the reason why he has so many siblings is due to his father's philandering right now. It might be too much for Naki and Smallest Fox to understand.]

Oohhh. We do not know much of spouses, but having so many guests does seem like a very full household! You must have quite a large manor--or perhaps a citadel? Regardless, it does sound nice!

[Nodding nodding! As Naki's gaze slowly falls to the rest of the food on the table.]

We've an entire palace in the Empire's capitol, Rakushou.

[Koumei smiled, a little glint of something mischievous in his eyes.]

I'm not sure if I've told you, Naki and Little Fox, but Kouha and I are both the younger brothers of the man who is to stand as Emperor-- should this war our country is facing go in our favor.

[yaayaa]

What! You're royalty!?

[The fox is shoxed!! Though Naki looks like he doesn't totally understand.]

We wish you luck in your war! Victory is always the preferred outcome, after all!

[Spoilers: Smallest fox doesn't know much about this stuff either.]

[The smile didn't faulter a second, but it seemed a touch more melancholy at those words.]

It can be, yes. I only wish for the safety of my brothers, sisters, and countrymen-- and those are the most important outcomes for me.

[yaayaa]

[Ah...Naki stared at the man for a moment, as if taking in his facial expression or the meaning behind his words.]

.....Me too.

[War and victory and things like that were important, he knew, but--his master's safety was more important, to him. The safety of the other swords, the safety of his fox.]
