Lightning flashes. Thunder booms and rain patters on the roof. It’s all about ambience here in ViViD, of course. You gotta set the mood!

Welcome to the Pleasurable Super Youthful Caring Hospital Stage, PSYCHward for short. It works, shut up. It’s a stage created for your well-being, health and happiness. Be careful, though. The first step you take in the dilapidated asylum carries you right into a puddle.

Look down, and the puddle is red.

Ah.

Of course it’s blood.

It’s only going to get even more fun from here.

Good Day. I Am The New Introducer For ViViD Levels. Mosley? Who's That?

Anyway, Please Have Fun And Remember To Be Safe. Safety Is Our First Priority At CERES.

Thank you. Enjoy.

//SCENARIOS.EXE

PHASE I

[ 4:00 ] The first room any people familiar with the ViViD song and dance routine will find is one that is...wonderfully full of body bags. Body bags everywhere -- on the floor, on the shelves, uncomfortably tossed over the back of a chair...and each body bag has a helpful tag.

Handy.

Of course, within each bag is a newcomer; they won’t be able to escape the body bags until someone else unzips them. They’re dressed in little more than hospital gowns, toe tags still attached to bare feet.

Welcome to ViViD! Enjoy your stay.

Of course, there has to be an element of surprise to it. Some body bags contain living, breathing newcomers, yes. But the others?

These contain corpses. The toe tag on them indicates a loved one or someone important to you -- or someone you hate beyond all else. You open the bag, and there is their face, achingly familiar and frozen in death...but blink and suddenly they’re the corpse of a nondescript stranger.

PHASE II

[ 6:00 ] Step out of that room and now it’s the asylum proper. Lights flicker. It’s dark, but it’s still more than clear to anyone with ears -- something’s stalking everyone in this place.

The shadow flickers on the wall, the lights go out -- you turn a corner and there it is, jumping out at you with an unearthly cackle --

A puppet.

It hangs there limply, utterly harmless.

All around the facility, these harmless puppets lurk. In lockers, behind doors, in dark halls…

But they’re all literally inanimate and harmless. Whose dumb idea was that?

PHASE III

[ 10:00 ] But slowly, the atmosphere changes. Go in deeper, and the sounds around deaden until there’s nothing left but the dark all around and the sound of your own breathing. And yet, irrevocably you know, whether as an aspect of the level or something else entirely --

Something is actually hunting you now.

It makes no noise. It can’t be seen. But it’s stalking, and it’s on the hunt.

To make matters worse, now the asylum seems to have become a proper maze, with dead ends everywhere, and practically no light to see them by.

And the only other souls you’ll see are the other people stuck in the maze -- but there’s something not quite right about them either. You can see...bits of their code, lurking under the surface of their skin, and as you watch, it’s being corrupted, bit by bit, the longer they’re in the dark.

If you look down, it’s happening to you too.
Better hurry.

There’s only one way out.

PHASE IV

[ 14:00 ] And then you step through a doorway into light.

You escaped the maze, but this is an asylum, and you’re about to see why. There are rows upon rows of cages of aliens. They cry out and reach out through the bars with webbed or clawed hands or tentacles, begging for release.

Let them out, or don’t -- the exit to Cerealia proper is right there at the end of this room, inviting and safe.

But if you do elect to let them out, the entire room suddenly goes silent.

And there, in that cage you opened, there is no longer an alien, but instead a doll. And it’s watching you. Stay any longer, and the doll with start to move, reaching -- and if it touched you, suddenly you’re the one locked away behind bars.

On the plus side, when you take the exit to Cerealia, it’ll deposit you in the Pleasure District, where massagebots will reach for you to try to drag you in for a sensual massage.

Welcome!

PENALTY

[ ??:?? ] You were caught in the maze.

It’s hard to say even now what it was that caught you, but now you’re strapped down to an operating table, and there’s a flat-faced doctor standing above you.

The restraints can’t be broken.

There’s a prick of a needle, and you fall unconscious -- and that’s probably a mercy. When you wake up, you’ll be back in the asylum somewhere, but missing a sense -- the one from your character’s application will be gone. A character who is sight will have been blinded, for instance, and a character who is touch will feel nothing. This will last until they log out of ViViD and get into Cerealia.

[ Remember to apply proper warnings on threads with sensitive or inappropriate material and do let a mod know if your thread careens off into maiming or canoodling so we can lock the log. ]

[ There's immediate relief, too, when she is no longer pointing that gun at him. He lowers his hands with an uneasy smile, but still happy. He knows that he can't actually die since it's a video game, but that doesn't mean he's keen on seeing what it feels like all simulated. ]

Yeah, it's really me. I know this place is kind of confusing.

[ He'd needed some convincing, too. And just like Naoto, she's already working on a way to do it. Yosuke lowers his hands to his sides, still loosely holding his kunai, but in a posture he hopes is non-threatening. ]

Something you don't know? [ He raises his brows at that. ] Uh...I was gonna get my ears pierced last minute before moving out to Inaba with a bunch of the guys I knew but chickened out last second, heh.

[ That's embarrassing. ]

[personal profile] truedetective 2016-07-17 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
[She nods, a slim smile pulling at her mouth. That certainly sounds like Yosuke. Which means it's either really her senpai, or a simulacrum so perfect that there's no difference. She'll take her chance on trusting her friend.] Thank you. Then you're not just a trick of this simulation, then.

[A short pause. That does seem a little embarrassing, so...] ...the first time I tried firing a revolver, I was unprepared for the recoil and the handle of the gun hit my face.

[She's quick to move on from that.] Have you explored any of the rest of this place? This is as far as I've gotten.
youraffection: (they still think of the cause)

[personal profile] youraffection 2016-07-17 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
[ Whew, so she believes him! That's good. ]

It's a lot to swallow, I know. When I first arrived I saw actual holograms of people we know. It was pretty trippy.

[ Going to gloss over the details on that one, though. Boy that's a memory he doesn't want to think about too deeply. ]

...Ha, really?

[ He's not snickering, but he can't help but grin. That's sweet of her to follow the rules of quid pro quo even though he wouldn't expect it. ]

Yeah, I wandered around a bit and found a room full of body bags. I thought you might be in one of them 'cause I found another guy in one, but obviously I didn't see you there.
truedetective: (04)

[personal profile] truedetective 2016-07-17 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
[She's going to say something about the holograms, but... something doesn't add up.] Yosuke-senpai... why on earth would you suspect that I would have been in one of the body bags? I opened several but all I found were corpses. There was no indication that anyone I knew was inside any of them.

[So either she's missing something, or...]
youraffection: (game001)

[personal profile] youraffection 2016-07-17 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
...Really?

[ Well... ]

...Okay, so a bunch of the other ones I opened had dead people in them, but when I walked into the room I saw one of the moving. When I opened it, there was an actual guy in there. So when I found him, I thought that maybe you might be in one of them too.
truedetective: (08)

[personal profile] truedetective 2016-07-17 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
--one moment, Yosuke-senpai. There's something I'm missing. [She frowns.] What would have led you to believe that I would be in them, just because someone else was? Suspecting that there were other people in them would be one thing, but suspecting my presence is exceptionally specific.

Unless... are you saying you had some reason to suspect that I'd arrived here?

[personal profile] youraffection 2016-07-17 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Just like Naoto to get to the bottom of things. Yosuke exhales through his nose with a nod, crossing his arms carefully so he doesn't actually stab himself. ]

Rise-san was able to sense when you showed up. And since everyone shows up in the game when they first arrive, we decided to come in and meet you. They did the same thing for me when I got here, too.

[personal profile] truedetective 2016-07-17 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, the missing piece. [Naoto nods, smiling softly as everything falls in place.] That explains why you were looking for me in particular. I understand now.

...though, if you and Rise-san entered together, where is she? Did she remain on the outside?
youraffection: (pic#10014480)

[personal profile] youraffection 2016-07-18 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Er, yeah...about that...

[ He looks a little sheepish, shifting his weight to one side. ]

We all came in together--Rise-san, Yu, and me--but we got split up. So she's around here somewhere. She's probably tracking us now.

[personal profile] truedetective 2016-07-18 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
[Dammit, Yosuke, we can't protect the one non-combat member of our party? Naoto's eyes narrow and she's about to say something, but...] --tracking us?

Like with her Persona, or is there another way?

[Because if it's with her Persona...]
youraffection: (pic#10035950)

[personal profile] youraffection 2016-07-18 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Well...outside of the game someone created this App that will let you track people coming in and out with our cellphones. Yu's went off right after Rise got your signal ping, right? But in game she's gotta use her Persona. But she's gotten really good, Naoto-kun. She can kind of sense things even without summoning it.

[personal profile] truedetective 2016-07-18 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
I see. That's very convenient. [Naoto says, and she means it. An app that can track people coming and going... she's glad for its existence. But there's also one more thing Yosuke says that catches her eye.] You mean that we can summon our Personas here, as in the Midnight Channel?

I suppose that shouldn't be surprising, given that this is all a simulation. Wouldn't giving us that power defeat the prospective challenge of the game, however? A video game where someone could summon Personas wouldn't be very challenging, I imagine.
youraffection: (pic#10049371)

[personal profile] youraffection 2016-07-19 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh! Yeah, of course you wouldn't know that...

[ He'd been pretty surprised when he first heard too. He uncrosses his arms as he straightens. ]

i wouldn't underestimate this thing. It's been full of surprises and having our Personas available is definitely a comfort I can afford. I know it's gonna sound crazy, but we can actually summon them in the real world, too. And trust me, we need them there, maybe even more.

[personal profile] truedetective 2016-07-19 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Summon our Personas in the real world? [She looks at him, her expression already deep in thought.] Do you mean similar to how we could use them in Inaba in the climax of the P-1 Grand Prix incident, or how the Shadow Operatives can use theirs at any time with those devices?
youraffection: (game009)

[personal profile] youraffection 2016-07-20 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
[ Record scratch.

Naoto can likely see the gears in Yosuke's head slow down to a halt. He pauses, narrowing his eyes. ]

Uh...What? P-1 Grand...?? Shadow Operatives? What are you talking about?

[personal profile] truedetective 2016-07-20 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
[...that is confusion on Yosuke's face. A genuine lack of understanding.

Amnesia, perhaps? There's no way he wouldn't know these things.]
Yosuke-senpai, tell me if either of these names holds any meaning for you: Labrys, and 'Captain Ressentiment.'
youraffection: (pic#10015918)

[personal profile] youraffection 2016-07-22 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
[ She's quizzing him on something. Something he clearly should know, but... ]

...So...what does this mean if I say "no"?

[personal profile] truedetective 2016-07-22 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
...fascinating. [The first, he could play off maybe as being cool about. But that nickname had always gotten underneath his skin. (Not that she could blame him; that was their design).] Senpai, it's possible your memories have been tampered with or altered in some way. [Corrupted data? Is that even a thing?]

What do you recall happening during the Golden Week celebrations in the spring following our resolution of the case?
youraffection: (turning misery into meaningfulness)

[personal profile] youraffection 2016-07-27 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
You're telling me...

[ Is he...actually not surprised by that? It doesn't seem so. Or at least as surprised as he could've been. ]

I've already forgotten everything from the last time I was here...are you saying I've forgotten stuff from home too?

[ SIGH. ]

Naoto-kun...Yu left just a day ago. It's not Golden Week yet.

[personal profile] truedetective 2016-07-28 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
[Naoto looks at Yosuke for a moment, frowning. She's not sure what he means by 'the last time I was here,' but the rest...] No. It's August of that year; summer vacation is almost over.

You didn't react to either of those terms, though. Not even the slightest twitch. You really don't remember... but it's not that you've been given false memories; you don't remember it at all.
youraffection: (game007)

[personal profile] youraffection 2016-07-29 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
[ He hates this. He really hates this. He hates knowing he's expected to know but can't recall anything for the life of him. ]

...That's not right. I just--I can't just forget stuff from back home. Here is one thing, but--

[ He frowns. ]

--dammit.

[personal profile] truedetective 2016-07-29 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
[She shakes her head.] I'm sorry, senpai; I don't know what to tell you. But I'm telling the truth.

If you really don't remember anything from spring until August... what other explanation could there be? If, as you say, there are things you already don't remember, it'd make sense that they could tamper with our memories somehow.

...but why?
youraffection: (pic#10015986)

[personal profile] youraffection 2016-08-03 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
That's...just how this place works. [ He sighs, angry, but not at Naoto. ] See, I've--I've been here before. But I don't remember that, either.
truedetective: (11)

[personal profile] truedetective 2016-08-03 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder what the reason for that could possibly be. [Sorry, she's thinking now.] It may be that having our code returned to the source resets it in a way, removing any memories gained here. I can't rule it out.

...at any rate, Senpai, that sounds frustrating, to say the least.
youraffection: (game010)

[personal profile] youraffection 2016-08-04 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
It's been driving me crazy! Because some people come back and remember everything, so why not me?

[ Another sigh. ]

But...yeah, that's just my problem. We've got to get you out of here.
