[Picking a place to live is a pretty big deal, and Yuna had been excited to take on the responsibility. Her list of requirements is a little longer than most people's; close proximity to a large elevator or something on the first floor is necessary to accommodate Togo's wheelchair, and after bullying Karin into agreeing to stay with them, they needed at least two rooms. Yuna and Togo were fine with sharing, but three's a crowd, even if the third person isn't a ridiculous tsundere. Karin would probably like to be close to the gymnasium, too, but with Yuna's flower-pressing hobby it shouldn't be too far from the gardens either, and of course, they'd have to attend school, so somewhere equidistant to all of those places would be for the best, and -
Needless to say, it's a lot of work for someone who's never really had to worry about finding a place to live before. Yuna's only ever lived with her parents before, and she hadn't realized there was so much thought into deciding on where to live. She was determined to find a place that everyone would be happy with, but she also wanted them to be surprised by her decision...which puts her in a bit of a rough spot.
She's troubled, so it's time to talk to someone, which is why anyone passing by may be confronted by a teenager:]
Excuse me, do you mind if I ask you a few questions about apartments?
[Locked to Togo and Karin - The First Hero Club Meeting]
[Now that they've found a place to stay, their first order of business should be to decide on a plan of action. Yuna's interested in starting up a Cerealia branch of the Hero Club at school, but she'd like to run it past the others first, and she's sure some of them have some suggestions too.]
So, before we make any decisions, does anyone have something they want to say? We don't know how long we'll be here, so we should make sure we discuss everything we need to now.
[Surely nothing can go wrong, and no devastating discoveries will be made.]

Hero Club Meeting
[For some reason, Togo pulls out... a pair of beverage cans she picked up from a vending machine while Yuna was apartment hunting. Not really clear on what they are, this being an alien planet, but she hands them to Yuna and Karin before continuing. Her expression is dead serious.]
Back in the asylum, I asked both of you what your last memories were before arriving here. The reason I asked that is because the events you described... for me, they happened several weeks ago.
In other words, from your perspective, I'm from the future.
no subject
But...you said you could still transform, right? Why would you be able to do that if you were...
[Of course, she knows there's really only one possibility here. But she doesn't want to think about that.
The Taisha said they were done.]
no subject
Maybe CERES just screwed up when they brought you here. We don't need to transform anymore, right?
[ it stings a bit as she says it. no need to transform anymore. no need to be heroes anymore. it should sound like a relief but karin's still smarting over it. just a little. ]
no subject
You both have the right to choose to not hear this. The world we came from doesn't exist any longer. Whatever happened there, in the grand scheme of things, isn't important. And... nothing I have to say will bring you any happiness.
So, if you'd rather preserve your happy memories as they are, then I'll stop talking. Otherwise, I'll tell you about the events that followed the destruction of the 12th Vertex.
[All things considered, though... she knows what they're both going to say already.]
no subject
It doesn't taste like anything.]
Even if it's something that'll make us sad...if you really thought it wasn't important, you wouldn't have said anything, right?
[She doesn't like the way this conversation is heading, but she'll hear Togo out. That's the least she can do, really.]
no subject
Whatever this is, it sounds like it's a big deal if you're making us all sit down to talk it over.
So what happened?
no subject
All right. First, I'll address the immediate aftermath of the battle, and the information that was being withheld by the Taisha.
Yuna, I'm sorry to put you on the spot like this, but you can't taste that drink at all, can you? It's probably just like drinking water.
no subject
[She isn't sure what alien vending machines are supposed to dispense, but judging by the bright colors on the label, it probably wasn't supposed to be so tasteless.]
Karin, did you taste anything?
no subject
[ she says it in a "well, duh" sort of voice as if to try and compensate for the unease she knows must be all over her face. ]
Did you just get a dud can or something?
no subject
The only person who wasn't affected was Karin. Do you understand what this means?
no subject
[Karin is the only one who didn't use mankai either. But the Taisha would have told them if using Mankai meant something like that, right? And Karin was trained by them, so she definitely would have known.]
no subject
... if you're trying to say something then actually come out with it. [ her voice is a little dangerous, as is the look in her eyes. ] Quit dancing around it.
no subject
I learned all this from talking to one of the previous generations of Heroes. The Taisha never explained any of it.
Mankai has a second stage, called Sange. The flower blooms, and then wilts. The things we sacrificed fighting the Vertex... will never return.
no subject
[It takes several seconds for the weight of Togo's words to properly sink in, and all Yuna can do in the meantime is give her a dumbfounded stare. When she finally catches up, however, she immediately objects:]
There...there must be some reason they didn't tell us, right? Maybe they just didn't know...? They wouldn't really just use us like that, would they?
[Without entirely realizing it, she's turned slightly toward Karin. She knows the Taisha better than anyone else, after all.]
no subject
You're wrong.
[ it's hard to tell what it is that's making her voice shake right now. fear? anger? probably both. ]
That can't-- they wouldn't-- I would've known about this! The Taisha would've told me about something like this if they knew!
no subject
[Togo keeps speaking in a dry monotone, staring blankly at a random point on the table. As she keeps going, the suppressed emotions gradually start to reach her voice again.]
The fight against the Vertex didn't end with the battle you remember. The Shinju's barrier... everything past it is an illusion. I went past it, and saw the real shape of the world with my own eyes.
Each of the twelve creatures we defeated was actually a combined form used by hundreds of smaller Vertex. In the living hell beyond the wall, I saw the rest of them, already working on rebuilding the ones we destroyed.
[Togo pauses, remembering the sight. She suppresses a shudder.]
The Vertex that I saw must have numbered in the millions.
no subject
[Yuna slams her hands on the table, standing suddenly.]
Togo, if we were the only ones who could fight the Vertex, then the right choice is to do it! Even if we do have to go through those kinds of losses, if the alternative was a destroyed world...
[But their world is destroyed now, isn't it. She doesn't finish her sentence, trailing off while she slowly sits back down.]
Heroes don't give up, even when they're up against millions of enemies. I wouldn't have given up, even if I'd known. I still won't.
[If their world is restored, that might mean the Vertex getting restored with it, after all.]
no subject
Everything she's done has been pointless.
She can't, won't allow that to be true. ]
Maybe you saw wrong! Or maybe that girl was just lying to you! None of us have ever met her before, so why should we just blindly trust whatever she says? You're telling me you believe in some random girl more than you believe in the Taisha? In the Shinju-sama?
[ she spits that out like it's a curse, like it's poison on her tongue. for togo to believe this over the taisha and the shinju-sama... what the hell had she seen out there? ]
no subject
[Even after everything she's said, Togo almost doesn't continue. If she keeps talking, it will mean one of two things: Admitting her guilt, or lying to her friends.]
The... The last thing I remember before coming here...
The Shinju-sama's barrier couldn't stand forever. I saw the endless Vertex pouring unopposed through a massive hole broken through it. Vertex pouring through into what little remained of our world by the thousands, endlessly, heading straight for the only target they ever cared about.
[They don't need to know. It's already over, so there's no reason to tell them who created that hole.]
We didn't beat the Vertex. Even if we can undo what the Flamine did, as some have suggested, we don't have a home to return to.
no subject
The phrase rings in Yuna's head, repeating endlessly, desperately. That can't be true, because if it's true, then there's no point to trying. There's no point to being here, there's no point in trying to save Itsuki and Fu - ]
...I...
[Togo wouldn't lie, and she's saying she witnessed it with her own eyes, so as much as she wants to deny it, it must be the truth. There's no way Togo would have said anything if she weren't certain. Yuna believes that with every fiber of her being. But even so...]
I'm going to try anyway. If we can undo the Flamine attacks, maybe we'll be able to undo the Vertex attack too.
[Five against millions isn't going to end well, but it's better than just giving up. She believes that with every fiber of her being, too.]
Karin, what are you going to do? I don't want to believe any of this either, but...if Togo is saying it, then I think it must be right.
no subject
Karin stands up abruptly. She knocks the table as she does so, making her can rattle and finally tip over spilling foam and fizzing soda. ]
What's it matter what I do? What's it matter what any of us do anymore?
[ her voice is dark and her eyes are dull, shaded by the way she ducks her head as she speaks. ]
If what Togo's saying is right then what's the damn point of doing any of this if we just get used up and thrown away? If we can't even do anything when it really matters?!
no subject
[ Togo understands. Everything Karin's asking now is something she asked herself when she found out. If the world is so broken, why not just give up?
But things are different now. ]
Even if our world is beyond saving, there are others that aren't. We can start a new life here, and we might be able to make a real difference this time.
no subject
[For all the good it did them.]
We saved our world every time we won! We made a real difference!
[Even though Togo says they eventually lost.]
Saving everyone else's worlds is important. But saving ours is, too, Togo.
[Even if there's nothing left to save.]
I'm not going to just stay here until I know we can't go back. I can't give up on Fu and Itsuki like that!
[Even if it means facing the possibility that she really won't ever see them again.
Even if it means she has to do it by herself.]
public option!
I...do not mind. But I am not very familiar with the...technology within them.
[ Given that he looks like he's from feudal Japan that much is probably obvious. ]
no subject
[She laughs a little sheepishly. This is probably something she should be asking Togo, but that would ruin the surprise.]
no subject
[ He's not sure the circumstances with all of them. ]
no subject
[She makes pushing motions with her hands.]
Do you know if they have accessibility options like that? Lower counters to take into account that she's always sitting, bathrooms with handrails so she can hold herself up while she gets in and out of the bathtub, things like that...she really likes to bake, so I'd hate for her to not be able to do that because the counter is too high to be comfortable. It's okay if you don't, but I'd like to make it feel like home until we can find a way back to Japan.
[She's always willing to help her, of course, but it's definitely better to be able to give Togo the opportunity to do things by herself, too.]
no subject
[ Though he looks at her thoughtfully before he nods. ] I understand. Perhaps there is someone here who could even cure her. Their technology here is...fascinating.
