Where: a classy little bar in the pleasure district.
What: in an attempt to see if he has any basic social skills, rideaux has invited steven out for drinks. things escalate.
Rating/Warning: 14A for alcohol consumption, some heavy drunken flirting, and a morning after, but nothing worth locking.

[ it isn't that steven is nervous about this meeting in the slightest - when rideaux has asked him out for drinks, it was in a snarky, borderline malicious way that steven understood. this is nowhere near a date, and he intends to hold his own and prove the other man wrong about whatever silly assumptions he had made about him thus far.

still, he'd be lying if he said that he wasn't anticipating whatever interaction was going to come out of this. he can't say that he likes rideaux very much, but he seems like an interesting person. if he's the kind of drinker that finds himself to be loose-lipped upon having one too many, he might learn a thing or two.

of course it doesn't occur to him that he himself may be the first one to get tipsy, but that's a bridge that will be crossed later. for now he's sitting at the bar, finger swirling around his glass of whiskey (neat, no ice) as he waits for his "companion". ]

[ he stays close for a moment, looking over steven's face and watching his expression, before drawing back and reaching for his drink instead. ]

Why don't we scrap that last round and start over with a more appropriate question.

[ though it's phrased as a suggestion, it's really not. ]

[ the breath he lets out when he moves away is closer to sounding like a light sigh, but it's easy to miss. that sudden loss of distance has taken the edge off of his attitude - his smile is calm again, but far less confident. ]

Are you quite sure about that?

[ he's stalling for time to take a looooong sip of his drink. ]

[ he takes a fairly long sip of his own, and closes his eyes for a moment before smiling back. ]

I am.

[ he sighs, drumming his fingers on the bar counter slowly as he thinks about what to ask. it needs to be something vague; something non-personal. at this point, he wants to stand by his statement about not revealing much more about himself. ]

How do you take your coffee?

[ innocent enough. ]

[ it is, and while it's a bland question, it does manage to temper his sudden bad mood a little and get things back on track. ]

Black, one sugar.

[ and hopefully steven won't have to worry about his personal space bubble being invaded again. hopefully. ]

Milk and one sugar, but I usually prefer tea.

You do seem like the type.

[ while it's not technically an insult, he definitely has a mental image of tea drinkers as prissy and out of touch, and it's pretty clear that that's what he's implying without actually saying it. ]

How old are you?

but he'll be choosing to keep quiet and take it as a compliment. no need to be picking fights, now. ]

[ hm. he's not really sure what he would have guessed, but he supposes that seems reasonable. ]

[ hm. that makes him raise an eyebrow. ] I would have guessed younger.

[ actually, he will choose to take that as a positive comment on his appearance, and confirmation that he's getting his money's worth out of these botox treatments. ]

For a martini? Stirred, naturally.

[ his world does not have a fictional secret agent with irrational drink preferences, so he's not sure why this is even a question. ]

[ pokemon loves its punny pop-culture references, so i can probably assume that said secret agent exists with some sort of pokemon partner. looks like the reference flew over the other's head, though. ]

At least that's one thing we can agree on.

[ he's somewhat cooled down by now -- thanks in part to that stirred martini, from which he takes another sip -- and he looks at steven with some thought for a few seconds before settling on another question. ]

Is that your natural hair color?

[geophile]

It is. It runs on my father's side.

[ silver-haired dreamboat, reporting for duty. he thinks it suits himiself quite well, and it definitely puts eyes on him. ]

[ rideaux would have to agree there, if a bit begrudgingly; though while it looks decent on steven, he certainly wouldn't trade that color for his own. dark hair suits his personality and his style -- and it's a lot more convenient for covering up certain things that he'd rather not put on display. ]

And-- well, one of these is mine.

[ basically his, anyway. he uses dye in the same shade as his natural color on his roots to cover up grey hairs, of which he now gets more than he'd like to admit and can't easily pluck out anymore, but whatever.

he runs his fingers through his hair and lets it fall over his shoulders as he turns his attention back to his drink. ]

So in other words, if you're still looking at me and thinking about drapes, yes, the carpet mostly matches.

[ what the fuck, dude. he was taking a nice sip of his drink before that comment almost made him choke on it. he certainly wasn't thinking about if before, but now... ugh. way to fluster him. ]

[ with this drink nearly gone now too, he takes out the olive and eats it off the pick, though not as smoothly or deliberately as he did the last time. ]

It's hardly that. Speak to anyone else in such a manner and you'd surely be giving them the wrong idea.

[ he'd been prepared to give a snarky response to whatever steven's answer was, but instead, something about that phrasing rubs him the wrong way -- propositioning someone in a bar would make him trashy, right? -- and he takes a second to finish his drink before he says anything. ]
