The quiet of Cerealia is interrupted almost all too suddenly.

Things were broken and not working before, sure, but that was before the sky opened up -- and the clouds part. And then, above the planet, hovering almost innocently...there’s a ship.

The peace only hovers there for a moment.

Because then...then the Flamines come.

There’s a debt they have to settle.

And the time has come to pay up.

We're here.

:)

//SCENARIOS.EXE

PHASE I

[ ❓❓❓ ] And then the Flamines are there.

They just appear, suddenly, as if from nowhere. They’re a race of mercenary aliens, and fighting is all they know -- they’re definitely not going to be easy to kill by any means. They seem to have a natural resistance to magic: aside from very specific types of magic (in particular, light magic and anything highly spiritual), they absorb it. Light magic and spiritual magic can harm them, but it will take a lot to take one down.

They can be stabbed, if you can get that close.

But good luck.

Of course, they look like nondescript black shapes with masks until you knock the mask off...and then you can see the true shape of the Flamines.

They’re here to kill you all. :)

PHASE II

[ ❓❓❓ ] As if that isn’t enough… it seems the Flamines’ arrival was the last straw for Cerealia and the Nexus Code. There’s a tear in the sky, and from it… the Nexus Code, where all of the lost friends from before, can be seen. It can be entered, even, though remaining there too long can be detrimental to your health.

But people are there.

Old friends, strung up and lifeless, can be seen there, unmoving.

And…

Then some of them move. They open their eyes. They remember how to breathe. And they’re able to return, able to stagger their way back into Cerealia and take their first breath of air in a long, long time.

Welcome back to the chaos of Cerealia, friends.

Unfortunately, you’ve got nothing but the clothes on your back while murderous aliens are rampaging, so hopefully you’re able to think fast. It’d be unfortunate to die so soon after coming back.

As for spiritual and magical characters who were not in the Nexus Code...well, when they return, they’ll find that they’re covered in old, dried blood, and their clothing might have tears in it, as if from a knife.

There are no scars, though, and they’re otherwise fine. Strange.

PHASE III

[ ❓❓❓ ] As if this chaos isn’t enough… there are also the masks. Regardless of whether or not characters were around to receive them the first time, regardless what they did with them before, the masks will suddenly reappear in your characters’ hands. They can be tossed aside, but they’ll reappear again eventually, unable to be truly shaken.

Characters who received them before will receive the same mask they had before.

Characters who didn’t receive them before will receive a mask according to the trait that’s more prominent for them.

Either way...it’ll have a profound effect on the Flamines.

They will go after any character with a broken mask in a bloodthirsty rage, intent on murdering them. Characters with a barcode mask or bloody mask will be the next likely to be chased down intently by the Flamines.

Characters with a :( mask will be killed if they get in the Flamines’ way, though they will not go out of their way to chase them down.

Characters with a vine mask or feather mask will be treated with wariness, though they may still be attacked if they get in a Flamines’ way.

Characters with a grey mask will not be killed unless they are first the aggressor, as will characters with a bloody fingerprint mask.

Naturally there will be exceptions to every rule, but the masks will change how the Flamines’ generally act towards characters!

PHASE IV

[ ❓❓❓ ] But something’s not quite right.

Regardless of the battles against the Flamines, it seems Cerealia’s just been under too much pressure lately. Something had to give --

And it’s the code building up the characters that really suffers.

Their code has been hanging on by a thread without CERES to maintain it, and now… it’s finally giving out. The glitches that afflicted characters before will be even more prominent now; they might glitch from place to place, or have their powers go totally awry in odd ways. There may be a lack of powers suddenly, or a sudden difficulty staying on the ground as gravity stops working on the character.

They might suddenly be unable to breathe, or go cold, or very nearly die --

But it can be controlled, too, with effort. Characters can learn to control the glitches, gaining an ability to almost teleport, or ways to tweak their powers in exciting new ways.

With a lot of effort, they could even possibly reverse a death -- but only their own, and only once.

BONUS

[ ❓❓❓ ] There are also… birds?

Flamingos, to be exact. Who knows where they came from, but either way, there are plastic flamingos chilling all over the place. They’re just normal plastic; they don’t move, they can very easily be destroyed --

But if you touch one with your bare hands… it’ll have an interesting effect.

Characters will suddenly find that they have the abilities or the last person they touched -- but without any of the practice or ability to control it, of course.

Still, it might help with that pesky Flamines problem, right?

Right now?!

[He shoots a look around. They're at least not being actively pursued at the moment . . . he's got some time, though whether he has the attention span with everything going on is pretty dubious.

On the other hand, his flare of emotion is dying down, so the flame is starting to go out anyway as he closes his eyes and takes a deep breath.]

Maybe I could, like . . . shoot it at the monsters!

[She knows he's kind of freaking out. They all are. So she thinks back to one of the first times she ever met Leon and instead she takes his wrists (not his hands because. Well. Knives.) and holds them to ground him.]

You could. They seem to be affected by magic. I don't know if this counts though. You're safe right now, we have time. [And then she tries to sound cheerful.] I already have enough boys running around the colony being reckless. Don't add to my list yet.

[She does notice that the flames are dying down and it's the only reason she continues this way.] Have you encountered a lot of them yet?

[It is working; he's focused on her now, and on answering her, so the flames die out quickly enough. Not precisely under his control, but not entirely outside of it either. He drops both knives so he can grab her wrists back, because whatever, he can just pick them up later.]

Not really. They've been leavin' me alone, mostly. 'Cuz of my mask . . . that's what I hear, anyway.

[His shoulders jerk in a sullen shrug.]

It's messed up! Anyway, I've just been tryin' to find my people and help if I can. I'm really glad to see you, Rise-chan . . .

[The flames are dying down enough and the knives are dropped, and it's for that reason she immediately flings herself at him to hug him tightly. She knows what his mask means, but...it's just something that's happened. In a way (a very strange, scary way) she's grateful that his mask is the way it is so that they're leaving him alone. It's one less person to be terrified for.]

Not as glad as I am to see you. [It's mumbled into his chest, but it's there.] I don't understand what they really see in these masks or why some people are being chased more than others. But the broken masks make sense. [...something occurs to her.] When was the last time you saw Kirigiri-san and Togami-san?

[He feels fucked up about it too. But right now, with her in his arms, he just feels relieved; it courses through his body like a shot of some kind of sedative, calming his heart just a little. She's here and she's all right and it's so comforting right now to have two damn seconds to touch someone, drink in a human presence.]

. . . A while ago. I ran into both of 'em and did what I could, but with all the glitching and shit—I can't keep track of anyone, y'know? I lost 'em both. . . . I know they both got broken masks, too.

[His arms tighten around her, reflexively.]

[She nods sadly and leans further into his grip, not minding at all. The Flamines won't bother them for a bit, let her have this, gosh. Still, that's troublesome.]

Kanzeon and I have been working as fast as we can, but you're right. With all of the glitching it's too hard to sense where everyone's going and keep track. I've been having her rest so I can use her when I really need to. [She frowns lightly.] Yu-senpai has a broken mask, too. And Yosuke-senpai has a barcode on his. They're out there somewhere but it's hard to get in touch with them right now.
babermetrics: (would you like apples or bees?)

[personal profile] babermetrics 2016-11-18 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Shit . . . you shouldn't be here with me . . .

[But even saying that, he's not like he's letting her go. Maybe if she takes him at his word and pulls away, but not until then. Until then, he's going to hang on tight and remember this feeling. It'll get him through some hard times to come, he knows it.]

I ain't that selfless, though, so I'm not gonna send you off or anything.
pseudonyms: (Follow us back to when)

[personal profile] pseudonyms 2016-11-21 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
They're together, I hope. [She doesn't appear to even think about moving, not when she's just found him. She's curled up in his arms and using this time to process what's going on. Not only is she grounding him, he's helping to ground her.]

We should stick together, too, until we find our friends. It'll be easier and faster if we're working together and we have each other for back-up. [Sure, pretend to be logical and not just "you're mine and I refuse to lose you", that's fine, Rise.] What do you say?
babermetrics: (my paintings are now invisible)

[personal profile] babermetrics 2016-11-22 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah.

[He presses a kiss into her hair. It's the kind of thing he'd do with some entirely different meaning another time, but right now, he's just so relieved he feels weak with it, and thinking along the same lines she is: I refuse to lose you.]

Y-yeah, we'll try! It's gonna be fine! We'll get everyone together and find somewhere to hide. Then it'll be okay!
pseudonyms: (I'm gonna break your little heart)

[personal profile] pseudonyms 2016-11-22 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
[Strangely she seems to perk up at that, drawing her own strength from him as she leans back but also takes his hand.]

I hate hiding when we have to stop all of this, but that's our best chance of getting out of here. We should start retracing our steps to find the others! With everybody glitching and moving so fast that'll be way safer until we're in closer range. I should be able to feel them. [Them, of course, being Kirigiri and Togami. Her own friends have their bond with her that she can track easier. But she smiles up at him anyway. Can't be worried, can't be scared. They have to keep going.] Shall we?
