PHASE I [ ❓❓❓ ] And then the Flamines are there.
They just appear, suddenly, as if from nowhere. They’re a race of mercenary aliens, and fighting is all they know -- they’re definitely not going to be easy to kill by any means. They seem to have a natural resistance to magic: aside from very specific types of magic (in particular, light magic and anything highly spiritual), they absorb it. Light magic and spiritual magic can harm them, but it will take a lot to take one down.
They can be stabbed, if you can get that close.
But good luck.
Of course, they look like nondescript black shapes with masks until you knock the mask off...and then you can see the true shape of the Flamines.
They’re here to kill you all. :)
PHASE II [ ❓❓❓ ] As if that isn’t enough… it seems the Flamines’ arrival was the last straw for Cerealia and the Nexus Code. There’s a tear in the sky, and from it… the Nexus Code, where all of the lost friends from before, can be seen. It can be entered, even, though remaining there too long can be detrimental to your health.
But people are there.
Old friends, strung up and lifeless, can be seen there, unmoving.
And…
Then some of them move. They open their eyes. They remember how to breathe. And they’re able to return, able to stagger their way back into Cerealia and take their first breath of air in a long, long time.
Welcome back to the chaos of Cerealia, friends.
Unfortunately, you’ve got nothing but the clothes on your back while murderous aliens are rampaging, so hopefully you’re able to think fast. It’d be unfortunate to die so soon after coming back.
As for spiritual and magical characters who were not in the Nexus Code...well, when they return, they’ll find that they’re covered in old, dried blood, and their clothing might have tears in it, as if from a knife.
There are no scars, though, and they’re otherwise fine. Strange.
PHASE III [ ❓❓❓ ] As if this chaos isn’t enough… there are also the masks. Regardless of whether or not characters were around to receive them the first time, regardless what they did with them before, the masks will suddenly reappear in your characters’ hands. They can be tossed aside, but they’ll reappear again eventually, unable to be truly shaken.
Characters who received them before will receive the same mask they had before.
Characters who didn’t receive them before will receive a mask according to the trait that’s more prominent for them.
Either way...it’ll have a profound effect on the Flamines.
They will go after any character with a broken mask in a bloodthirsty rage, intent on murdering them. Characters with a barcode mask or bloody mask will be the next likely to be chased down intently by the Flamines.
Characters with a :( mask will be killed if they get in the Flamines’ way, though they will not go out of their way to chase them down.
Characters with a vine mask or feather mask will be treated with wariness, though they may still be attacked if they get in a Flamines’ way.
Characters with a grey mask will not be killed unless they are first the aggressor, as will characters with a bloody fingerprint mask.
Naturally there will be exceptions to every rule, but the masks will change how the Flamines’ generally act towards characters!
PHASE IV [ ❓❓❓ ] But something’s not quite right.
Regardless of the battles against the Flamines, it seems Cerealia’s just been under too much pressure lately. Something had to give --
And it’s the code building up the characters that really suffers.
Their code has been hanging on by a thread without CERES to maintain it, and now… it’s finally giving out. The glitches that afflicted characters before will be even more prominent now; they might glitch from place to place, or have their powers go totally awry in odd ways. There may be a lack of powers suddenly, or a sudden difficulty staying on the ground as gravity stops working on the character.
They might suddenly be unable to breathe, or go cold, or very nearly die --
But it can be controlled, too, with effort. Characters can learn to control the glitches, gaining an ability to almost teleport, or ways to tweak their powers in exciting new ways.
With a lot of effort, they could even possibly reverse a death -- but only their own, and only once.
BONUS [ ❓❓❓ ] There are also… birds?
Flamingos, to be exact. Who knows where they came from, but either way, there are plastic flamingos chilling all over the place. They’re just normal plastic; they don’t move, they can very easily be destroyed --
But if you touch one with your bare hands… it’ll have an interesting effect.
Characters will suddenly find that they have the abilities or the last person they touched -- but without any of the practice or ability to control it, of course.
Still, it might help with that pesky Flamines problem, right?

bonus
While that's fine and dandy for both Izumi and Kashuu, the latter's lack of control over the bullets is probably what's causing problems that are exacerbated by the hand waving. Friendly fire has never been so frightening, even if Izumi is capable of projecting shields.]
Kashuu-san! Off! Please turn it off!
no subject
On the plus side, he does kind of stop waving his hands around like a baffled monkey for like five seconds, since he's concentrating instead on trying to figure out what the off button for magic bullets is.]
How?! How do I turn it off?!
no subject
At the very least, the barrage of energy bullet nonsense ceases for the five seconds Kashuu stops moving around like a monkey.]
"Off"! Say "trigger off"!
[It's the phrase that'll dismiss the Trion body and, with it, the hellish bullets with no sense of direction. The buildings around them must be in poorer shape than before. Anyway, Izumi doesn't lower his shield just yet, because who knows how many more bullets will go flying between now and "trigger off."]
no subject
[There are definitely a few more wild bullets going ricocheting about between the time Izumi says "trigger off" and when Kashuu does... It's like they know the end is coming and they're going in for a last hurrah. SO, a few buildings take some damage and the sidewalk around him is peppered with cracks and dents but at least they're both alive...!]
...Um. You okay?
no subject
That scared me! How was that even possible?
no subject
[He holds his hands out in front of himself and experimentally waves them again, but fortunately there isn't a hail of bullets accompanying the gesture this time... Small miracles.]
—You're okay, right?
no subject
[And those that did come after him, he blocked with his shield. Small, great miracles.]
Those were Trion bullets. It looks like you were using Asteroid the whole time; we're lucky it wasn't Meteora. Still, I can't believe you even managed to pull that off . . .
no subject
[If he was aiming, he could have shot at the Flamines! Instead he just shot up their buildings even more...]
I'm not even sure what any of those things are, but I don't wanna deal with 'em again.
no subject
Just to make sure, you don't have a Trigger, do you?
no subject
As for that, Kashuu's brow furrows for a second and then he shakes his head.]
I'm not even sure what you mean. Like, a gun trigger?
no subject
No, it's what we use to do what you just did. But I guess that answers it. [He cups his chin, directing the question at no one in particular.] How did you do it, though? It happened so suddenly.
no subject
I have nooo idea. Like, one second I was just looking at that space over there where there aren't any flamingos, and then suddenly there were just lights all over the place and things blowing up!
[Suddenly firing off energy bullets is a very disorienting experience.]
no subject
Over there . . . ? [Izumi looks in the aforementioned direction before glancing down at himself.] I don't feel any different.
[And why Trion bullets, of all things?]
Is it because I'm nearby?
no subject
Yeah, over there! ...Hang on.
[He'll trot a few paces over to the left, frowning a little.]
What about now? I don't feel any different, but I didn't feel different before stuff started firing all over the place, either.
no subject
Even after Kashuu moves, nothing happens. Izumi glances around before raising his hands at his sides and summoning two cubes of Trion. Everything is coming together just fine – no wonky bullets, no sudden abilities beyond his moveset.]
No, nothing's changed. Seriously, what was that about?
no subject
[HE'S STILL NOT SURE WHAT TRION IS. Energy? Magic? Magic energy?? A mystery. He'll edge a little closer apprehensively anyway, though.]
no subject
[With the lack of a better target, Izumi directs the cubes to break into individual bullets and shoots them at the plastic flamingos. Even with Kashuu's proximity, everything is still working as expected. A mystery, indeed.]
I don't get it . . . What else were we doing before?
no subject
Um... I dunno what you were doing, but I moved that flamingo over there?
no subject
That flamingo? Why?
no subject
Mostly I just wanted to see if they were attached to the ground or if they'd start moving or something.
no subject
Then if I move it back . . .
[Picking the flamingo up by its body, he moves it to his right side. Then he gives it a moment.]
Nothing's happening.
[Maybe he feels a little less hungry, but what's that got to do with anything?]
no subject
...Maybe it was just some kinda really weird glitch? I mean, usually my arms just go through things or I can't feel stuff, but I guess anything's possible.
[He doesn't sound terribly convinced, though.]
no subject
I guess, but what kind of a glitch gives someone another person's abilities? That's a little weird even for a malfunction, isn't it?
[Are they fusing into one entity? That's kind of nasty – no offense to Kashuu. With a groan of frustration, he shrugs.]
We'll figure it out later! We still have no idea how far behind those freaky aliens are, so we should get a move on.
no subject
Yeah... It's definitely not like anything I've seen before.
[He glances down at his hand and flexes his fingers a little, and then looks over toward Izumi again. He doesn't want to fuse into one entity, either?!]
—Right, right. O-kay! Forward for now, then!
no subject
Based on the direction they came from, Izumi decides to continue marching straight ahead, stepping over the mess created by the shooting incident earlier. The flamingos seem to stretch on for miles.]
This is a serious invasion, though. Has something like this ever happened before?
