The quiet of Cerealia is interrupted almost all too suddenly.

Things were broken and not working before, sure, but that was before the sky opened up -- and the clouds part. And then, above the planet, hovering almost innocently...there’s a ship.

The peace only hovers there for a moment.

Because then...then the Flamines come.

There’s a debt they have to settle.

And the time has come to pay up.

We're here.

:)

//SCENARIOS.EXE

PHASE I

[ ❓❓❓ ] And then the Flamines are there.

They just appear, suddenly, as if from nowhere. They’re a race of mercenary aliens, and fighting is all they know -- they’re definitely not going to be easy to kill by any means. They seem to have a natural resistance to magic: aside from very specific types of magic (in particular, light magic and anything highly spiritual), they absorb it. Light magic and spiritual magic can harm them, but it will take a lot to take one down.

They can be stabbed, if you can get that close.

But good luck.

Of course, they look like nondescript black shapes with masks until you knock the mask off...and then you can see the true shape of the Flamines.

They’re here to kill you all. :)

PHASE II

[ ❓❓❓ ] As if that isn’t enough… it seems the Flamines’ arrival was the last straw for Cerealia and the Nexus Code. There’s a tear in the sky, and from it… the Nexus Code, where all of the lost friends from before, can be seen. It can be entered, even, though remaining there too long can be detrimental to your health.

But people are there.

Old friends, strung up and lifeless, can be seen there, unmoving.

And…

Then some of them move. They open their eyes. They remember how to breathe. And they’re able to return, able to stagger their way back into Cerealia and take their first breath of air in a long, long time.

Welcome back to the chaos of Cerealia, friends.

Unfortunately, you’ve got nothing but the clothes on your back while murderous aliens are rampaging, so hopefully you’re able to think fast. It’d be unfortunate to die so soon after coming back.

As for spiritual and magical characters who were not in the Nexus Code...well, when they return, they’ll find that they’re covered in old, dried blood, and their clothing might have tears in it, as if from a knife.

There are no scars, though, and they’re otherwise fine. Strange.

PHASE III

[ ❓❓❓ ] As if this chaos isn’t enough… there are also the masks. Regardless of whether or not characters were around to receive them the first time, regardless what they did with them before, the masks will suddenly reappear in your characters’ hands. They can be tossed aside, but they’ll reappear again eventually, unable to be truly shaken.

Characters who received them before will receive the same mask they had before.

Characters who didn’t receive them before will receive a mask according to the trait that’s more prominent for them.

Either way...it’ll have a profound effect on the Flamines.

They will go after any character with a broken mask in a bloodthirsty rage, intent on murdering them. Characters with a barcode mask or bloody mask will be the next likely to be chased down intently by the Flamines.

Characters with a :( mask will be killed if they get in the Flamines’ way, though they will not go out of their way to chase them down.

Characters with a vine mask or feather mask will be treated with wariness, though they may still be attacked if they get in a Flamines’ way.

Characters with a grey mask will not be killed unless they are first the aggressor, as will characters with a bloody fingerprint mask.

Naturally there will be exceptions to every rule, but the masks will change how the Flamines’ generally act towards characters!

PHASE IV

[ ❓❓❓ ] But something’s not quite right.

Regardless of the battles against the Flamines, it seems Cerealia’s just been under too much pressure lately. Something had to give --

And it’s the code building up the characters that really suffers.

Their code has been hanging on by a thread without CERES to maintain it, and now… it’s finally giving out. The glitches that afflicted characters before will be even more prominent now; they might glitch from place to place, or have their powers go totally awry in odd ways. There may be a lack of powers suddenly, or a sudden difficulty staying on the ground as gravity stops working on the character.

They might suddenly be unable to breathe, or go cold, or very nearly die --

But it can be controlled, too, with effort. Characters can learn to control the glitches, gaining an ability to almost teleport, or ways to tweak their powers in exciting new ways.

With a lot of effort, they could even possibly reverse a death -- but only their own, and only once.

BONUS

[ ❓❓❓ ] There are also… birds?

Flamingos, to be exact. Who knows where they came from, but either way, there are plastic flamingos chilling all over the place. They’re just normal plastic; they don’t move, they can very easily be destroyed --

But if you touch one with your bare hands… it’ll have an interesting effect.

Characters will suddenly find that they have the abilities or the last person they touched -- but without any of the practice or ability to control it, of course.

Still, it might help with that pesky Flamines problem, right?

[ In another moment, in another scenario, he might have pulled Yosuke into a kiss himself. He wanted it when their foreheads were together. He wanted it when he spoke those words.

But the simple truth is that they can't afford to get distracted, no matter what he wants. So he's all business like the moment never happened at all as they both ready themselves. ]

I won't stay out much longer. If I needed an escape, I have a friend who could get me out of a tight situation. But I--

[ He glances at Yosuke, his face blank. ]

I'll come with you. We'll go back and get my mask fixed.

[ All business. That's what they need to be. He's glad to be there, though. It's a selfish want to be that person that is, but it's not just Yosuke that wants to assure that Yu is okay. To hear Yu say that he'll get his masked fixed is a relief.

Yosuke exhales through his nose and nods.

There's a pause Yosuke passes the knife in his right hand to his left, before extending his right out to Yu. ]

...We'll do this together, right? Partners?

[ Maybe only Yosuke would be able to see it. Most people wouldn't even be able to tell his expression has changed. But the faintest of smiles flickers across his mouth as he switches his sword between hands. ]

Always.

[ He grasps Yosuke's hand with his own. It's warm. Yosuke... he's warm.

Of course, this is the moment that, without any warning whatsoever, one of the Flamines comes crashing in through the window, raining shards of glass everywhere with a sound like an explosion. Yu stares at it with wide eyes before lunging past Yosuke to yank open the door. ]

Go!

[ He does, he can see it. Having spent countless hours studying the subtitles of Yu's expressions, he's become quite adept at deciphering all the things that Yu decides not to say. It's enough to calm the storm in his heart just a bit. There's still the potential to chew Yu out later for this, but...for now, he's okay.

Except things aren't okay. ]

Shit!

[ Yosuke's exclamation is instantaneous as the glass flies up, raising his arm to protect his face. There's only a pause as he takes heed of what Yu is doing, before nodding and dashing through the open door.

And there are others waiting. ]

Takehaya Susano-o!

[ Really, his Persona has only been...mildly effective at its best, but it's better than doing nothing. He knows better than to use any of his garu spells at this point, but the physical attacks take a brunt of his own stamina. He'll just have to deal with it. At least this leaves more SP for healing.

Susano-o fires off Brave Blade as the large spinning saw flies outwards towards the Flamines. ]

Sraosha!

[ His Persona reappears at his side, ready for whatever command he can give. Yu leads the way at a sprint, calling out orders as he runs. ]

Focus on healing us! I'll take them down!

[ He knows from his own experience that most elemental skills don't work on the Flamines. But Hama spells have been working very well - and those he's got. But if he's focusing on the offense, he won't have the SP to spare for defense and healing. He'll need Yosuke to focus on that if they're gonna get out of here.

Yu feels so painfully aware of his mask. If they get swarmed...

He can't think about that. All they can do is run like hell for Rei's building. ]

[ He doesn't hesitate a moment to agree, though he is a few steps behind Yu. That seems well enough, considering Yu is the target. ]

You got it, partner!

[ Looking up at his Persona, Yosuke nods. ]

You heard 'em!

[ Susano-o flies along, but not without casting Youthful Wind on the party, providing moderate healing as well as a temporary boost to hit/evasion rate. ]

[ Yu hasn't been too badly injured thus far, and he has been healing himself, but it's still a relief to have the healing spell rush through him. On the other hand, he keeps an eye on their surroundings and the air, trying to keep track of how many Flamines are on them.

The number builds quickly. His mask does what it's been doing all day: acts like a beacon, drawing the enemy to them. There's only one chasing them at first, but the number swells to two, then three... ]

Stay focused!

[ They can't afford a sudden ambush, and if he's going to use Mahamaon, he has to make it count. He's running low on energy, and a misspent spell could have some very bad consequences... ]

[ That's what teams are for, man. To help carry the load and share the responsibility. That's why he's here, because Yu could go on for a while, but no one could go on indefinitely by themselves.

Yosuke mostly stays clear of the Flamine's attacks, slashing out at them as soon as they get too close. They really only seem interested in clearing him out of their way to get to Yu. He's not about to let that happen. ]

Susano-o!

[ A quick gust of Magarudyne blows debris into the air around them, knocking back a couple of the Flamines, but only temporarily, and not nearly enough. ]

Yu!

[ Yosuke slides to a stop. ]

Two more coming in! I'm counting--seven!
