[there's a lot about the current situation that yuri flat-out doesn't like.
he's obviously not fond of having to live in a world so separate from his own, in a place where he doesn't know what the truth is and what lies are being fed to them (he's got his suspicions, but nothing to act on quite yet). he doesn't like that he doesn't know the true fate of his friends or his world. and while he can deal with being alone, it's definitely a little worse without repede around to keep him company. it stretches further than that, from the strange occurrences he's seen and heard about to the astounding amount of complacency that comes from other people in the same situation.
maybe he can't blame people for seeking out normalcy, but there's something unsettling about it for him. it's not something that yuri can really put his finger on—could it be because it feels like people are playing right into their hands that way?
it's hard to tell.
but these are the things sitting on his mind as he meanders through the area, looking for something, anything that could possibly be useful. the city's big enough that there's a lot of ground to cover on foot if he wants to be thorough, especially alone.
it's while he's doing this very thing though that he spots milla with sword in hand. interesting. it doesn't necessarily seem like the best place to be doing this, out in the gardens where it could probably be some kind of residential safety hazard. but hey, who is he to judge? at least he's seeing someone trying to keep their skills sharp, since it's pretty apparent to him that the woman knows what she's doing.
...and of course, yuri, being yuri, wants in on it.]
You know, it's a little easier if you've got something fighting back. [he'll pipe up as he makes a casual approach from the side, smirk present on his lips. this is probably not the best way to make an introduction to someone who's holding a weapon... but eh. yuri's not about doing things the best way. he's about doing it his way. and besides... he's got his still-sheathed sword handy, so it's not as if he can't defend himself, right?
who knows? something good may come of it, so he can't resist.]

the woes of the city: the people, so many people, which made it difficult to find a place to truly be alone in the midst of the... everything. even with the weird settling into some kind of schedule here, there's still moments where milla feels oddly out of place, oddly frustrated. swinging a sword in the middle of the gardens didn't exactly help that, but... well, it's the closest she had to the outskirts of nia khera.
yet the outskirts of nia khera wouldn't have this guy here, as yuri so casually slips into view. she straightens a tad, gaze sliding to the sheath at this intruder's side as she turns her head ever so slightly in the smallest bit of acknowledgement towards his presence... before moving onto the next swing. so much for a bit of silence. now milla's left with a choice: a stubborn solo training session with... probably less value, or some kind of practical spar.
... and of course, milla can't deny yuri's point. a small sigh. ]
Is that your way of offering?
[ this time she does stop, her hand still at her side. ]

but even if she seems a little less than thrilled about it, he can also see that she understands where he's coming from with it. it's a practical sort of offer, isn't it? so when milla asks that, the smirk widens into a more comfortable smile. by the straps, yuri holds up his swords, giving his head a bit of a nod.]
It's easier to stay sharp when there's a person on the other side. That... ViViD thing feels too predictable. [since he knows it's not real. there's no risk or reward (well, there's money for winning and he doesn't mind that, but it's a lot less fun) for doing it, and he doesn't get the actual thrill that comes from going head-to-head with another person. and since he hasn't met a lot of people openly sparring or keeping up with any sort of combat, he feels like maybe it would be a waste to let it slip by.] Doesn't seem like a lot of people are interested in it, from what I'm seeing.
[so it's up to milla, really. but hey, it would be a mutually beneficial endeavor, right? they both get to keep their skills sharp, after all. he's not sure what her skill level is like, but she doesn't look inexperienced and he can adjust his own pace if it's necessary. sure, he's competitive and he loves to fight, but he also knows when to tone down the thirst for battle and the skill level acquired from having been a knight.
maybe he's also hoping he can tweak his moves a little and maybe think up a new arte or two along the way. he's had an idea in mind, but he hasn't quite worked it out yet.]

[ fake threats or not, fake... everything or not, there was still too much that happened here to get complacent. it's true, however, the predictability of ViViD--no matter how real they could get it, there was a structure to the game that didn't serve as the most valuable of battle experience, not even a carrying over of wounds as a consequence, just a measure of endurance. even she admits that sometimes she's not as careful as she should be, knowing that.
milla's not sure what to think of him just yet. he's relaxed, incredibly casual, and whether she can expect any sort of challenge from this spar she isn't sure. but... like he said, there weren't many people who seemed to be into people-to-people fighting. he isn't irritating either, not yet, so--
an outstretched sword, in yuri's direction. ]
Fine. I accept, as long as you don't waste my time.
[ blah blah blah former maxwell, though she's admittedly been humbled far more times than she'd like. into a battle-ready position, indicating her preparation. come at her, bro. ]

yuri's all for relaxing when the time calls for it, but that can't happen if it means losing sight of the problem. he'll take what he can get though—so as long as milla's willing to spar with him, he won't turn it down. and apparently the way this will go is crossing swords first, taking names later. ah, the life of people who spend a lot of time fighting.]
Not planning on it, but I guess you'll be the judge of that. [he responds with a smirk, making a harsh, downward swing with his sword—sending the sheath flying out of the way before tossing the sword in the air and catching it by the hilt. it's a little showy, maybe, but it gets him into a battle ready position quickly.
he doesn't hesitate, either. he knows this is proving his worth to spar with, so he makes a couple of quick and basic swings and jabs, following it almost immediately with an azure edge.]
no subject
ah, no time to focus on that. at least yuri spends no time waiting on his swings--the decisiveness and confidence in his fighting already tells milla that this isn't some guy who carries a sword around for show. that's good. maybe this won't be a waste of time, after all.
her first reaction isn't to swing back. instead, she takes the defensive, meeting his blows with her own sword. she's mainly assessing his strength here--her style was hardly so methodical, but this is the rare moment where she actually wants to find out a bit about how he fights before she trades blows of her own. brute force? usually the answer, since there's no need to assess monsters. this is a little different.
the arte that's coming at her now is oddly familiar. she barely avoids the azure edge, but maybe it's the fact that it's recognizable that allows her to.
--tch. it's her turn to go on the offensive, then. yuri will be subject to a quick counter-initiation by milla. she doesn't plan to augment any of her moves with magic just yet, only because she's not sure how much he can handle and how Intense they're going to go with this spar so...
at first, there's a simple sword swing, but the subsequent ones come very quickly, as she moves into a no mercy whirling assault. ]

he's got not qualms with the way milla assesses his fighting style—he can tell that it's what she's doing, but it also gives yuri a chance to see how she defends herself, and where there might be breaks in said defense. it's all strategic to pay attention to even that much while he's on the offense.
not that it can really prepare him for what her offense looks like. which looks good; it's fast and fluid, she's got a clear handle on her swordplay, and she doesn't hesitate. their styles definitely differ, which makes it a little harder for yuri to predict where to block. he doesn't see any artes interspersed with her swings, so it definitely makes her fighting style feel a bit different. he manages to block most of them, but has to resort to a leap backwards to avoid getting clipped before he can get a more solid block and gain an opening. they're pretty evenly matched... yuri likes that.]
Not bad. [he says with a smirk, but he's still pretty damn relentless. his immediate retaliation when an opening strikes is another few simple hits, this time followed by a cerberus strike. he still refrains from chaining any more artes—this is yuri going "easy mode" while they continue to feel out the fighting styles.]

You-- [ the response never gets to escape her mouth, cut off instead by yuri's continuing strikes. his smirk wasn't so much irritating as it was off-putting when combined with that confidence, but then there's stopping for talk and not giving her a chance to respond. that's the irritating thing.
though of course, she should expect this much. this is a fight, and maybe she shouldn't have given him the chance to add in his little quip. the sword comes up to meet his once more, and when yuri puts the blade down she's all but ready to move into her offense--
--except the fists come, and she's forced to raise her other arm in defence, taking some punches and avoiding the others. the pain echoes for a moment, underneath the thoughts of maybe feeling out this guy's fighting style is useless, because his style seemed like… something she couldn't even pinpoint.
tch. he's good, so she'll take it a step further. the distance she sets after his assault won't be getting shortened--instead, milla's swinging her sword right where she stands. it might seem like maybe she took a rough blow to the head, how off she is, but the long extensions of wind that come from and follow her blade make it pretty clear that's not the case.
it's not a cast, but it's a wind blade nonetheless. ]

it's something he uses to his advantage whenever possible, for obvious reasons. but it definitely doesn't make him infallible, either—especially when he's not being as tough as he could be. yuri's not the type to go easy on people, but he does want to have a fair gauge of her ability and strength, since this is about keeping their skills sharp and prepared, rather than taking an opponent down for a clear cut victory.
(not that he really wants to lose, either.)
still, when milla backs up, yuri takes a bit of defensive stance. sure, he could go in for the assault, a relentless barrage of arte chaining to prevent her from doing much, but he wants to see what she does and how she fights. even though he's dealt with a couple of spars, or seen other people do so via ViViD, he's taken note that they don't bear much resemblance to what he's used to, and that makes him all the more curious to see what will come next.
expectations are shattered pretty quickly though, because while the execution is different, wind blade is definitely an arte he recognizes. sure, it's not one of his, but raven has used it enough times that he knows that cut of wind. yuri moves quickly to try and evade it, bringing his sword up, but it can only deflect so much—it makes contact with his arm enough to nick it. not that it's much to slow yuri down, since he can take more than that on any day... but still. she's strong, to be able to use an arte with that so easily, which makes him feel like he needs to step it up a bit.
but rather than chain into something with more finesse, he opts for something more ranged. really, the way he swings his sword with large swooping motions almost resembles milla's wind blade—except this is a larger gust of wind. it's final gale, taking on a different from than what she's used to.
but hey, it'll give him a second to regroup before he moves in again, since most of his attacks don't work too well from a distance.]
