The Gifts that Keeps on Giving ((You)) Nightmares

It's been a whole month without any new arrivals. Who knows why? If you ask CERES, they won't bother with any in-depth explanations. They will simply claim that none of the code out there has been responding to their recovery methods, so they had to rework a lot of their technology. However, after several weeks of grueling work, they have finally experienced success! A fresh new batch of faces is coming in, and to celebrate their arrival and the real upcoming holidays, CEO Julius Vincere has arranged for a Christmas-themed carnival for all to enjoy.

Those who arrive will wake up in Cerealia and be given a long, boring explanation and powerpoint as per usual before being ushered onto a bus (there is no escape. The robots will force you onto the bus one way or another). You will be unwillingly carted to the theme park where you will be immediately assaulted by a giant array of lights followed by several rides that you can enjoy. After you disembark from the bus, one of the snowman robots will be waiting to give you tickets to the rides and show you around as part of the Grand Opening. The amusement park will remain open for the rest of the month of December so anyone can visit as they please. The first couple tickets will also be on the house for new arrivals, but the rest will have to be bought with credits, so choose wisely! (Or try and sneak into the rides -- then face the wrath of the snowman robots and their snowman firearms :D)

PHASE I

[ xxxx ] Do you like ferris wheels? This is an enchanting one where you get to ride around in a giant snowflake at a very limited speed. The wheel will turn excruciatingly slow before stopping abruptly, leaving you trapped at the very top. We hope you're not afraid of heights because you're going to be in there for a while! The windows on the snowflake will rapidly darken leaving you and your fellow riders trapped in the darkness. At that moment, you will feel something warm breathing down your neck and along the back of your ear. As you reach over, you'll feel like the chair underneath you is made of snakeskin, and a hissing sound will intensify as the "chair" squirms and as the breathing gets louder and hotter. Scrabble at the doors, fight your way out! Will you escape or not? Probably not, but the experience will last only a good five minutes before the lights come back on and before the ferris wheel starts moving again. The chair will appear as normal, and there will be no one else inside except any fellow riders who came with you.

PHASE II

[ xxxx ] If the ferris wheel didn't "do it" for you, then perhaps a fun house will? If you're a fan, that is! This Christmas-themed funhouse features a wonderful walk through a snowy forest convered in singing reindeer. The more you walk through, the more you will notice things like within the distorted mirrors, there will briefly appear strange specters. You will also hear a bunch of howling in the background, and while you may think that you're safe since they're trapped behind a mirror, you are very wrong. The lights will go out once more, and you will hear the mirrors shatter all around and feel yourself being grabbed and hurled to the ground. Whatever is coming for you is something you can't see, but it's advancing fast with impressive strength to hurl you back once more. You will feel pain erupt through your body before an engineer will appear to get the lights back on. Once they're back on, the reindeer will be happily singing, and all the mirrors will appear as they were before -unbroken.

PHASE III

[ xxxx ] After those interesting adventures, another option would be to simply visit the rocking santacoaster, a large, sprawling roller coaster that reaches 150 mph. You will be strapped into a sled and be shot through the tracks where you can scream and cry all you want except once you reach the tunnel, everything will come to a sudden stop (whiplash pending). You and the other riders will be in there for a few minutes, surrounded by a dozen santas as they start to fly out from the tunnel walls, carrying swords and swooping down to take a swipe at you. You better duck or be prepared to be cut up by their blades. The rollercoaster will abruptly resume, and when you reach the end, you might notice some bleeding, a little bit of hair missing, or some clothes shred up. If you ask the snowman robots about it, they will just shrug and claim they don't know what you're talking about. Please go enjoy a snowcone on the house!

PHASE IV

[ xxxx ] The Christmas whirl will be your last stop for the evening! This is a ride that goes round and round and round while tilting. Everyone will be strapped into it while standing up and forced to hold on as it spins, and somewhere in the midst of the spinning, the ride will suddenly malfunction. Yes, big surprise there! But it won't stop spinning. It will just be a rockier ride, and you will seemingly enter a new space where you will be among the stars and seeing planets all around you. Your own home planet will be amongst them before it breaks open like an egg and out crawls a friendly visitor. If you get bit by it, you will spend the rest of the day and night experiencing an array of possible symptoms, including: a voracious appetite, a fear of light, the urge to 'mate' with anyone who smells especially good, heightened senses, the ability to climb on all kinds of surfaces, irritability and crankiness... (( you don't have to experience them all. you can pick and choose which one you like. ))

BONUS

[ whyo'clock ] What's that jingling you hear in the background? Why, it's Santa Clause! Coming here all the way from the North Pole. The park will stop, and all the snowman robots will gather in the square, ushering along as many people as possible. Santa-Bot X-3 will be seated on his chair to welcome all visitors to sit on his metaphorical lap and tell him what they want for Christmas. He will then give them a nicely wrapped present and tell them that it's exactly what they asked for, but they can't open it until they get home. For those who can't wait and choose to open it quickly, they will get some nice treats from Mundus Caelestis. But beware! Those who do take this gift home will experience a weird after-effect as the lovely red and white toy will come to life on its own and hop out of the box that evening to try and violently electrocute the owner. The other one is completely harmless.

[ Makoto's emotional susceptibility to young, impressionable children and felines alike is a mortal weakness. While her presence alone doesn't curb his anxiety in the matter, he is a good deal more relieved when she assents, squatting down so that they're momentarily at resting eye-level. She's really tiny, too?! What the heck. ]

Oh, I'm Makoto! Thank you for accepting my request.

[ Nonchalantly rising to his full height, he pats her head with decided warmth, like he wouldn't be disinclined to hold her hand walking inside if she reached out to snatch it mid-air. ]

Since you're an expert and this is my first time heading in, maybe you can show me the best path to take?

[Makoto is truly an angel. Lily doesn't mind the eye contact when he moves to her level, it's nice to have someone do that. Especially since he's so tall, like a lot of other people she knows here. She's surrounded by gentle giants.]

I'm Lily! ...Mako! Nice to meet you, Mako! [Mako was an easy one for her to remember, she's thankful for that at least.

Blinking from the pat Lily feels her cheeks burn softly with color before she reaches for his hand. The last time she was in here it scared her so someone big would help right?]

Yeah I can do that! It changes a lot though.

[ Oh no, his hands are tied. Makoto has no choice but to adopt Lily into his family in complete disregard of her inordinately tragic and homicide-filled past ... he'll make sure to introduce her to Ran and Ren at some point if they ever wind up around (ha, ha, ha). ]

That's a really pretty name! It's nice to meet you too, Lily!

[ And there he goes, doing his best not to smile like a complete dummy (and failing miserably) when she takes hold of his hand. Someone needs to tell him that he'll be the one crouching behind someone almost half his height before the trip's over, but it's not like he's aware of what's in store for them. ]

Sort of like we have to take a different route every time? ... Well, it wouldn't be any fun if it was predictable. Is it okay if you lead the way, then?

[Adopted into another family she is on a roll here. It's hard for her to believe it when her born into family wanted nothing to do with her. Still she is more than happy to have the hand around hers. Usually she likes ridding on people's backs but hand holding has become a second best thing for her.]

[Might have caused her to blush a little, not used to everyone saying it was pretty. Looking up at Makoto she tilts her head a little. He looks a little...nervous. She has to wonder if he will be okay.]

Yeah...You can! Are you going to be okay, Mako?

[ He's taking things nice and easy first, okay. It'd be pretty horrible if he ended up snatching some poor mother's child and taking them for a joyride on his shoulders right off the back — Makoto's pretty much working on the assumption that Lily has a) loving, wonderful parents to cherish her very much and b) a wonderfully innocuous life free of pain and existential horror until she proves him wrong. ]

[ While he's mentally prepping himself to not end up shrieking his head off the first few minutes in (another repeat of the ferris wheel incident isn't on his bucket list by any stretch), he regrettably isn't keeping tabs on the anxiety spasming on his features. Still — when Lily draws attention to it — he smoothes out his face into another gentle smile like nothing's wrong, because that's true. For the time being, at least. ]

I'll be alright! It's not like there's anything scary waiting ahead for us, ahaha. After all, it's a funhouse! Those are nothing but festive.

[Easy is good she will never really complain about that. However Makoto is in store for the biggest shock of his life when it comes to Lily's life and past. Most people seem to get upset when they here, she even had one man sniffling back tears. It doesn't bother her though she was with the Baskervilles.]

Not right now there isn't.

[His smile is a lot nicer than his fearful face...she wonders if he will really be okay inside. After all the last time she was scared and summoned her chain when Jae-Ha tried to ask her a question. In her defense he did surprise her though.]

There is scary stuff inside...I'm hoping it's changed. A big monster came out and threw people last time.

[ Bleeding heart that he is, he'll likely end up bawling if she ever manages to wrap around the subject matter to the topic of affectionate parents, or the lack thereof in Lily's life. For all intents and purposes, she's harmless — an assumption which is partially the product of preconceived notions and partially her own enthusiasm. In his mind, no one so small and vivacious could possibly be a killer.

But his mouth audibly clicks all the same when he averts his gaze from the looming brickwork of the funhouse to settle on Lily, smile dissipating in a matter of seconds. ]

... A big monster? What do you mean? Shouldn't they have already closed this place down if people were injured?

[Lily will have to comfort the mess that is Makoto. Most the time she is harmless unless ordered otherwise or around Break. The man still angers her and she wants to kill him herself, the last time she was stopped from doing so.

Looking up she shrugs a little bit and then looks back to the house.]

It breaks the mirrors! No...this place likes to do dangerous things sometimes.

[ At least he can count on Lily when it really matters — although he'll definitely need to find a way to dissuade her from arbitrary acts of murder if they're going to remain on good terms unimpeded.

Breaking mirrors, though. That sounds horrifically unlucky ... ]

Why don't we go somewhere else in the meantime, then? Until it gets fixed.

[ Speaking as if he actually plans to lead her into that death trap later on (read: he doesn't), Makoto gives one of her hands a gentle squeeze and leads Lily away from their presumable demise in the funhouse and toward one of the many stalls ringing the amusement park instead. ]

How about another game? Or would you like to get something to eat instead?

[She hasn't killed anyone here yet...so that counts right? Plus someone told her she couldn't behave and she has to prove him wrong!]

Okay, if you want to Mako!

[Looking back at the house as they walk away, she's curious if it is still trying to kill people. Knowing this place it's safe to bet it might be. Looking at the stalls she looks a little more cheerful towards them.]

A game? Okay! Um...I like the treats here too. What kind of treats do you like Mako?

[ Small mercies. But as long as she's on her best behavior, they won't have any problems?!

Absently rubbing at his chin with his free hand, he assesses their surroundings, eventually settling on one stall in particular, eyes pinned on one stand housing a sundry variety of carnival treats. ]

Whenever I'm at a fair like this, I really like the goldfish scooping games. I don't think they have any here though, unfortunately! And — I like sweet things, mostly. I don't think I have any one favorite treat.

[ A slight pause. ]

Why don't you point out what you want from that treat stand over there and I'll buy it for you? Afterwards, we can try out another ride. How's that sound?

[No problem! Just watch out if she starts calling him 'Nii' too. She's learning what the add ons mean!

Lily had never been to a fair before coming here, she had seen them but never really been. Plus they were a little different in her home. They were fun here, minus the killer rides.]

Goldfish...scooping? What's that? I wanna try that! I like sweets too!

[She smiles brightly, glad they like the same thing.]

Um...candy apple! [She points to the stand ahead of them.] The red ones! Okay, I will go on one with you.

[ He's already picturing her as the little sister he never had, it wouldn't be that much of a stretch. Makoto has a mortal susceptibility to adorably tiny children, okay. Sue him.

His fairs were usually nonviolent and didn't land people on hospital stretchers? The largest contrast, bar none. ]

Hum, how to explain ... back home, they'd have a stand with a huge basin filled with water and a bunch of goldfish. And they'll give you a tiny paper net to catch them. But see, they're really fragile scoops, so if you aren't careful they'll break before you can get a single one. I wasn't too good at it, so I think you'd do a much better job than me!

[ In gesticulatory movements, his free hand flits in the air by way of illustration, demonstrating the motion of catching fish prior to arriving at the stand and ordering a candied apple.

After the credit transaction goes through, he hands the treat off to Lily, staring around to assess their surroundings. ]

Are there any rides you haven't been on yet?

[Lily does have the perks of being small and cute going for her at least. That is something that has saved her in the past luckily.

Those sound like the best kind of fairs!]

...Do you get to keep the fish? Or do you let them go again? I wanna try that! Can we look for that?

[She really hopes they have something like that. Now she wants to prove that she can do it for Makoto. It seems like something this man might like too so they should really try to find one.

Watching him buy the apple, Lily takes the treat from him and starts to bite at the apple. With the question bright blue eyes scan over the fair before she things about it. Any rides she hasn't tried...hm...]

There's the spinning ride! I haven't gone on that.

[ Oh, Lily. You sweet summer child. Makoto's going to have the shock of his life if/when he finds about your illicit affairs?! ]

If you want to keep them, the vendors will bag up the ones you caught for you. It doesn't normally happen in winter festivals, but it doesn't hurt to look.

[ As long as she's enthused, Makoto's enthused with spending the rest of his time idling around the park in peace. His eyes rove along the same general circuit of rides she's fixated on, eventually conceding to rub the nape of his neck in token contemplation. ]

It doesn't seem like a scary one. It might make you queasy though! Do you normally get sick going on rides after eating?
