tried to square not being there--
Who: 2 single dads (
sunshrouded &
deontology)
When: backdated to midnight, ooc date: 3/28, ic date: 12/12 aka littlest brother's birthday
Where: their apartment
What: happy birthday to the missing little brother
Rating/Warning: maybe some tenka sads, possibly some questionable partners being partners
[Tenka had left work early today. He didn't bother to stay until the bar closed, instead actually stopping by the Pleasure District - not for any company or even to drink. Rather, he expected that the area of this world with more Eastern influences would have some sweets that he's more familiar with.
In this case, Tenka is bringing back konpeito, Chuutarou's favorite snack.
So when he gets back home, he changes into his yukata for sleeping, then settles the Kumou haori on top before he sits down to have tea, faintly humming a tune of happy birthday once the clock strikes midnight.
He misses him more than anything.]

He wasn't particularly practiced with handling children, and especially not babies, so he had not had much to do with Chuutarou's upbringing--for the short period of time that he was there for it.
But he remembers, and he remembers feeling a faint flash of pride as part of the family at his birth.
It's midnight, and now it's Chuutarou's birthday, and Sousei settles himself at the table across from Tenka, gently settling his own cup of tea on the table.
Happy birthday indeed.]
no subject
But that was still a distinctly different hurt than being without his baby brother. Still though, he continues to sip his tea before he reaches for the konpeitou and tosses some into his mouth before nudging it over to Sousei.]
Hey, help me eat this.
no subject
Even if he doesn't know what it is, it's not hard to guess.]
...Fine. You shouldn't get too much, when it comes to sweets.
[But it's said mildly, if nothing else, and he reaches for some as well. Is this...Chuutarou's favorite, then?]
no subject
So he just thoughtfully eats another before laughing faintly.]
Normally I'd take one look away and that's when Chuutarou would grab them all.
[Might as well mention him.]
It's his birthday. He'd be 13. [ . . . . and he snorts faintly.] What a shame. He's getting so old. He won't be cute soon.
no subject
...I remember.
[Chuutarou's birthday, at least. He couldn't really forget that. As for the rest...]
You sound like a weepy mother. Enough of that.
[He's not growing up too fast--he's not that old.]
no subject
[That's something that Tenka says pointedly enough. Though he does toss more konpeito into his mouth carelessly at that. It's sweet and it reminds him of Chuutarou.
He's trying very hard not to be sad.]
He's.... really growing up.
[Sort of.]
no subject
[That's what happens when time passes, Tenka--]
But he will still have more growing up to do when you see him again.
[13, huh.... that was about the age when everything went totally wrong, wasn't it? That was the age when they had to completely and totally grow up.
He's glad that that's not the case for Chuutarou, even if the entire Orochi incident made him grow up quite a bit as well.
He still has the chance to be a child.]

[A reaffirmation of the conclusion that Tenka's come to here. Even if they tell him that his time is up, he's going to fight so that he can see his brothers grow up. He wants to be there for them. He wants to hold them close, wipe their tears, watch them run out of the shrine confident and laughing.]
.... I just miss him.
[That much he'll admit openly.]
no subject
As for the rest--]
Naturally.
[Of course Tenka misses him. Chuutarou is his precious family, and it's been months.]
Are you going to mope all day about it, or are we going to celebrate his birthday properly?
[not...in the dark...with some pieces of candy... LOOK THAT'S JUST SAD.]
no subject
Bahaha!!
I just got off of work, so sue me.
[Even Tenka can be tired sometimes.... especially when he thinks about his little brother's not here. Which brings him to another point-]
Either way, why the hell would I 'celebrate his birthday properly' when he's not here? He'd be so mad!!
Nah, we can do that when I see him again.
no subject
... Then stop moping.
[really.]
You will have a birthday to celebrate when you see him again. That is something to look forward to, surely.
[He knows Tenka misses Chuutarou--he misses the Yamainu too. But nonetheless.... they can't dwell on how much they miss people, but instead what they'll do in the future with them.]
no subject
[AT LEAST NOT ON THIS SPECIFIC INSTANCE. He pops some more candies in his mouth before reflecting thoughtfully-]
But you're the one who gets mad if I grin a lot even when I'm not feeling it. [And it's not so much that Tenka's moping and dwelling right now so much as it is that he's genuinely just not 100% happy for once.
It's something he only ever lets himself feel at home anyway.]
Take it or leave it, Sousei.
no subject
Apparently you do listen to me on occasion.
[Amazing--but no, he does know, and he does prefer this to the fake smiles.]
no subject
[Look, he's at least not in such a foul mood that he can't manage sass.
Still though.... it's not unlike when he would drink with Shirasu. Tenka has always made these small allowances of when he lets himself feel sad. It just... actually means something that he trusts Sousei enough to let him witness it.]
You're just hard to please.
no subject
[He's not going to deny that, really--he knows he's hard to please. He has a lot to uphold, honestly, and he's not going to skimp on it.]
Is that a problem?
[He doesn't really care if it is, for the record.]
no subject
[He knows.]
You've gotten so stubborn.
[Though it's... also not like he's complaining.]
no subject
[Yeah, they both know. And yeah...he's gotten pretty darn stubborn.
That's just... the way it is.]
I have had many stubborn people to emulate.
[Kumous]

You're welcome!
no subject
[sheesh!!!]
It's bad form to act as though someone owes you gratitude.
