Who:
braider,
allthreefourths, & YOU
When: IC 12/19-12/21
Where: weapons shop, gun range, and all around the city
What: Astrid's adjusting to life in Cerealia...sort of.
Rating/Warning: none!
A: Weapons shop
[Astrid was responsible enough that getting a job wasn't a problem. She wanted to be productive, and to be completely honest, she hoped working in the society would help her understanding of it all.
Unfortunately, it wasn't coming as easily as she had hoped. She spent the first several days on her job struggling to understand how to run the store. Technology was not her strong point, and here she found herself surrounded by it.
But once she managed to get that down, at least for the most part, the job wasn't so bad. She may not have known a thing about guns other than how deadly and dangerous they were, but the swords part? Oh yes, did she have that down!
Anyone that comes in while she's on the clock may find her hitting the computers and saying some very not nice things to them. Or maybe it's a slow day, and she's boredly throwing a baseball bat for Stormfly to chase-- because, yes, her dragon is most definitely chilling inside with her.]
B: Gun range
[Considering she now worked with guns, it was highly recommended to her that she learn how to use them. At first, she was hesitant. It was just...unusual. But the more she learned about them, the more interesting they got.
Those that find themselves at the gun range the same days at her may find her struggling with taking hers apart and putting it back together. Other days, she's actually giving it a shot-- literally. Give the newbie some tips?]
C: Around the town
[Given that Hiccup had been in Cerealia significantly longer than her, Astrid went to him about...well, pretty much everything. Sure, he didn't know everything, but he knew a whole lot more than she did. She had always highly trusted his opinion, and when it came to things about the city, it was no different.
While she was good at adapting to change, this was taking her a lot longer than she would've liked, so she accepted every opportunity to learn and understand more. One such ways was Hiccup dragging her around, showing her the city and making her try new things.
It was out of her comfort zone, sure, but she didn't want to be in the dark about this place any longer than she had to.
Anyone out and about in the city might notice Hiccup very enthusiastically leading her around, all while she tries to soak it all in. At least she doesn't seem as overwhelmed as she did when she first arrived?]

WAIT
Actually, he sucks a lot at them. Yeah, he knows how to turn them on and type and things, maybe a little about the internet, but if something were to go wrong on one, he'd definitely be resorting to the cave-person method of tech support as well.
So he's watching her pretty closely, finger under his chin as he keenly observes.]
I never knew that made it work. Aah, I see it now.
[And then he'll give the computer next to her a swat, swearing at it loudly. And then he'll do it again. Did the screen crack? Maybe.]
Oi, so here they're voice activated like that too? What a crazy world.
[He knows nothing. But he's looking for a sword.]
no subject
It doesn't. It just makes me feel better.
[HOW SHE WISHED HITTING IT MADE IT WORK. But she's a viking, hitting things was one of their favorite past times. And it was a lovely way of getting out her frustrations, even if it really helped nothing.]
You're telling me. We don't have anything even close to this back home.
[Hiccup had his contraptions, but those at least made sense. They were complicated, sure, but nothing to this extreme.]
no subject
Right? Like, we don't have a single thing like this at home either. [flicking a few of the keys] I don't even know what these do. Ha. . . what a bunch of crap! What is it even made of? It's not even like, wood. Hah hah hah. . . !
[shutup Gintoki, there are computers everywhere where you're from. He just doesn't know how to use them and can't afford it anyway. ]
no subject
Gods, this place is insane. What I would give to be back home in Berk right now. At least the metal there doesn't talk.
[She missed it terribly, even if this place was more comfortable in comparison. But home was home, even if it was rainy and frigid and lacking in modern plumbing and electricity.]
no subject
Oh well. Still, he can empathize with this girl. ]
Right, right? More than insane, things here are just a pain in the ass. Why do I even need to have a job in the first place? I had a great job at home before this, you know?
[This sigh might be a little too nostalgic.]
It's just as hard to earn money here as it is at home. Future? This isn't better! I'm on my last few credits.
no subject
This may not be our homes, but we still have to help out. A village isn't run by one person alone, after all.
[She's used to everyone having to band together to survive year after year, so it's not a stretch for her to take up a job here.
But she shrugs. Regardless of what she thinks or says, he'll probably continue his way of thinking.]
At least it's credits here and not fish. [Sure, they had a system of exchange, but there were plenty that still bartered and traded goods. It was a smelly business.]
no subject
. . . well. What a good kid she was. He'll give a half-hearted yawn, then set down his magic money card (?). ]
So you're saying that. . . if I lived in your village, this would be a fish right now? Tch, what a pain.
A
Ah... Is a brawl ensuing?!
no subject
I would deny it, but it's giving me enough grief, it might as well count as fighting back.
[She crosses her arms and backs away from it now, but it's clear she's still irritated by it.]
Everyone tells me these things get easier with time, but it's really not feeling that way.
no subject
Those machines are very unusual to me as well. I believe that I have gotten used to my CereVice, but this is a different matter. [He scampers over to get a closer look at the machine.]
I am sure that if you keep working hard, it will truly become easier!
no subject
I hope so. Right now, it's taking everything I've got to not to rip it to shreds with my axe.
[She's pretty sure her bosses would not appreciate her doing that.]
no subject
Astrid-san... I understand that it must be great to be able to practice with such a weapon! But we must practice the virtue of patience in this trying time...
no subject
I'm not really going to do that, you know. I do have some self control, as much as these computers irritate me.
no subject
I did not mean to underestimate your self control. Gai-Sensei has told me a lot about the value of self control, and it is great that you practice it already! [He gives her a thumbs up.] With that understood, let's work on this computer problem!
no subject
[She remembers him teaching her about the CereVice and he didn't seem super familiar with them then. Even if he hadn't just told her now, she would've guessed he didn't have them back home either.]
no subject
A
So have a seven foot pirate ducking into the door just when a particularly not nice word hits the air.]
Well, now I know I've come to the right place.
no subject
All the same, the last thing she wanted was for someone to walk in the door right when called the computer "son of a half-troll, rat eating potlicker."
Needless to say, when Thatch speaks, she straights up pretty fast.]
...Please tell me you didn't just hear that.
no subject
I seem to have gone temporarily deaf.
[he gestures at the computer]
Anything I can help with, miss?
no subject
[well, okay, about guns and swords, not about computers. But she ends up shrugging.]
Yes? No? I don't know. [long sigh.] To be honest, I think I'm just doomed to battle it out with them while I'm stuck here.
no subject
[he leans nearby, trying not to loom, though that is somewhat difficult given his height, trying to ascertain the problem]
This kind of thing can be tricky for people from places not used to them.
no subject
[She moves away from the computer with a soft grunt of frustration, but she doesn't quite start walking towards the back just yet.]
No kidding. My home has nothing of the sort, so getting used to it? Hasn't be easy.
no subject
Mind if I give it a shot?
no subject
Yeah, sure. Follow me.
[She waves as she starts to lead him around the displays, passing through a doorway and finally to a workbench, complete with anything and everything he might need to tend to his sword.]
How's this?
no subject
Just fine. [He takes out the first of the cutlass']
So tell me about yourself, miss. Or if not that, where you come from?
no subject
As he pulls out his cutlass, she crosses her arms and leans against the nearby wall, admiring the blade.
But his questions have her smirking.]
Berk? It's nothing special. Just a whole lot of ice and vikings that could really bathe more often. But the dragons make things a little more interesting.
no subject
C!
... Hiccup?
no subject
And this is-- [ ah, there's a familiar sounding voice, which interrupts him as he's left to turn around and... ] Mary!
[ no, no, this building isn't mary, but the small girl approaching them, who hiccup is receiving with a friendly smile, certainly is. ]
no subject
...Mary?
[She gives him a confused look, but then her attention is turned to the young girl that approached and evidently knew Hiccup.
Oh. Well that made more sense than the building being called "Mary." Not so surprisingly, he's as popular here as ever, huh?]
no subject
no subject
still, astrid would like mary and would not at all treat her like snotlout (who deserved it, probably, so). he knows that much too. ]
I guess it's time for little Berkian icebreaker. [ with less headbutts and more friendly words. ] Mary, this is Astrid. She's from back home. Uh-- Astrid, Mary. I met her here, and... she saved my life once?
[ because that's totally something you just ADD IN but he needs to emphasize that mary is Pretty Great, okay. ]
no subject
Wow, you did? Thank you, for that. I'm glad to hear someone was looking out for him before I got here. He is pretty hopeless on his own.
[She could never pass up a chance to give her boyfriend a hard time. She knows it's only a matter of moments before he starts protesting, but even so, she shoots him a teasing grin and nudges his side with her elbow.]
no subject
H-he had Toothless, so it wasn't really anything that big, but-- it's-- nice to meet you??
[ She means that not as a question. ]
c.
(Slowly, of course. The thing is small, even for a robot. Every few moments, she’ll have to pick it up and redirect it.)
That’s where she’ll come across Astrid and Hiccup. The latter is more familiar than the former but, any friend of blah blah is a friend of blah. You know how it is. With a smile, she’ll engage in the most pleasant of pleasantries. ]
Hello, Hiccup. [ And an equally cheery hello for Astrid follows immediately after. ]
no subject
Hey, Pyrrha! And... Pyrrha's cat. [ is what he adds in, when his gaze hits her little robot companion. a half-second pause is next, as he realizes that perhaps he should follow with a bit more, so... ] Uh, right. Astrid.
[ a hand gesture to pyrrha. ]
This is Pyrrha--the girl I told you about before. [ then, a gesture to astrid. ] Pyrrha, Astrid. She's my girlfriend from back home.
no subject
It's nice to finally meet you, Pyrrha. And... Pyrrha's cat, too? [She's adding the cat on at the end because Hiccup addressed the robot thing and now she feels obligated to do the same? She has no clue if she was actually supposed to, she's just following his lead.]
no subject
Nice to meet you, Astrid.
[ With a flick of her hand, the cat rears up, settling obediently at her heels. Cybuddies aren’t very analogous to the animals their based off at times. ]
This is [ insert name here, because the naming process is still happening in another thread. ] He was just repaired, so he’s got a lot of energy. Say hello, little guy.
[ The cat mews. It’s half the realistic meow of a cat, half a jaunty series of mechanical beeps. ]
