![]() A few weeks prior to December 26th, an invitation went out to all whom already reside in Cerealia. In delicate, curling script, it read: You are cordially invited by Natalia L.K. Lanvaldear to a Winter Ball to be held on the Eve of December 26th in the Gardens. Dress in your best attire and enjoy a magical evening of dance and fine cuisine. What do you mean we should fuss about worlds being destroyed? Get into the holiday spirit, you scrooge! And in regards to the new-comers: whether you have been wandering Cerealia over the course of the past few days and managed to receive one of the later waves of invitations or have simply suddenly appeared in the gardens with nothing but the (hopefully…. appropriate….) clothes on your back, welcome. The gardens have been transformed through the work of

his hands curl together, then uncurl, and he finally sticks them beneath his thighs to keep from fiddling with them. for several long moments, he's silent, collecting his thoughts, trying to sort out how he wants to word them. haru isn't normally a talkative teenager. other people have better things to say, have better things to listen to. but this is.. important. not just for him, but also for okita-san and for kashuu-kun. to make sure that there's an understanding, to make sure that things are going to be okay this time. ]
It's-- different. Before I call them. [ he toes at the path, a tiny line drawn between his brows. ] Before I call them, they really are.. weapons. Sometimes beloved weapons, sometimes famous, but.. there's no life there, so there can't be-- they can't die, either. [ he glances up slightly. ] So he didn't die back then, because he wasn't alive in the first place. But.. the steel remembers. Memory.. it's imprinted there. So.. when I-- [ he pauses there, suddenly uncertain how to explain his abilities. ] I-- it's-- [ he glances away again, face feeling hot now, too. ] Well, it's complicated. But when they manifest, the steel's memories become their memories.
[ ultimately, what he's trying to say is that.. really, okita-san does need to make things okay between he and kashuu-kun, but he shouldn't feel too guilty. ]
.. In the end, I didn't have to bring him out. But.. I did. It seemed right.

He curls his hands in his lap unconsciously. He remembers the katana with the chrysanthemum, the cursed sword that brought death with it. Three years old, he had won it by beating a man senseless, and sometimes he had wondered if it was because the two of them were... alike. Now he wonders if the potential existing in that sword would have created something just like him. Not fully a human, never fully a human, because there are some feelings he doesn't know how to feel. Are all swords like that; like him? It's a terrifying thought, but also one that is full of longing.]
I... think I understand. And for what it's worth, I'm glad that you did. Even if he could never have actually felt all that hurt as a sword... in a way, it still existed. So if this is the only way it can be made better, I'm glad. [A soft laugh leaves his lips, bewildered and fragile like a newly hatched butterfly.] Thank you. It's an honor, to have been able to speak to him. [A small wince.] But I know that I... it made him a bit upset, seeing me, and I think he'll probably need you to speak to him later.

the warmth fades, though, and he glances back down, lifting his wrist to see the bracelet. .. ah. well.. there is something else, isn't there?
.. right. deep breath, haru. ]
.. You should know.. I mean, unless you have objections-- [ he can't imagine why he would. ] --if things seem to be working out between you two, I-- I'll let him go back to you if he wants. If you both want that.
[ back home, after all, this is impossible. kashuu and yamato are stuck with haru. and while they've adapted to circumstances beautifully, he's not stupid. he's not okita souji. kashuu should be able to spend as much time with this man as he can.
his lips twitch into a tiny frown, the line back between his brows. ] But only if it's going to be positive for both of you. And-- And until then, you can come see him anytime you like, and he can certainly visit you if he likes. I wouldn't-- I mean, I wouldn't want to keep you apart. I'll-- I'll send you our address and you can come for dinner sometime. [ the heat's back in his ears again, pale eyes sliding away in embarrassment. ] .. If you like.

Then he very slowly starts to smile again. Reaching out, he brushes his fingertips over Haru's wrist, the metal of the bracelet slithering against his skin. He doesn't say anything, doesn't ask, because he really doesn't need to. Not with the way Haru had stared at it for a moment, as if it was a life line which he was considering cutting, and also like the imprint on your heart of something you would soon have to learn how to lose.]
I'd love to come over for dinner, if it wouldn't be too much trouble. It's... pretty lonely in this place, you know? So I'd like that very much.
[He pauses, pulling his legs up after a moment or two and winding his arms around the, the pose making him look strangely childish as he turns over the rest of his answer.]
A sword - I mean, a metal sword - can only have one owner, right? Because only one man can wield it at a time. But it's not like that anymore, is it? [He tilts his head, watching Haru's face and seeking confirmation.] Kashuu is not a thing and I think neither of us would feel comfortable saying that we own him. And a person... a person can have more than one home. So if he wants to stay with me from time to time, I'd be really happy to have him with me, if that's what he wants. But I can't imagine that he'd want to- to choose, you know? So maybe we should just tell him that he's... welcome, and wanted, and that he doesn't have to.
no subject
ugh, this is silly. why is he feeling like this? he suddenly straightens, taking a breath and lifting his hands from between his knees, slapping his cheeks lightly. okay! he can do this. it's no big deal.
he turns back to souji again, eyes maybe a little overbright, but solemn face serious and open again. ]
I always treat them like humans, because I love them, but the truth is that a lot of them still like to be 'owned', Okita-san. So I guess that's what I'm saying. Kashuu-kun is always, always welcome wherever I am, but if things work out so that he wants you to be his owner again, that'll be fine with me.
[ of course it will be. it's important for kashuu to get what he needs to heal.
he pats his pockets, pulling his cerevice out and--is that another okita souji? no, he can't brain this right now--finding the correct name, he swiftly taps in a short message with his address, sending it off. ]
I'll talk to everyone about a good time to have you over. I might need to ease Mutsu-kun into the idea a little..
no subject
But this... this is fine. It's going to work out.]
Then we do whatever he wants, and respect his wishes regardless of what they are. After all, being someone else's can be... good, provided it's what you choose for yourself.
[And doesn't he know it.
It feels good to know the worst of the tension has passed, and they can slowly return to some sense of normality - as much as that meant, in this place. He laughs, and this time it's full and light at the same time, sheer mirth and enjoyment in the sensation.]
I had a bit of a run-in with him too. He's... suspicious of me, and I understand why, but I think I managed to calm him down a bit. I don't know how it was in your world, but his old master is a friend of mine - even if I've tried to kill him a couple of times. So I hope him and I can be friends too, one day.
no subject
he blinks mildly at the mention of the other man's unusual relationship with his version of sakamoto, then simply shakes his head. ] Ah, well.. if you met Mutsu-kun, I'm sure you noticed that he's friendly. [ really, really friendly. ] He gets along fine most of the time with Kashuu-kun. He and Izumi-san-- [ that's izumi no kami kanesada, naturally. ] --butt heads pretty badly, but it's mostly because Mutsu-kun doesn't know when to stop talking.
[ so there's hope for souji! as long as no one badmouths sakamoto.. or guns.. ]
no subject
Because I'm sure Izumi-san didn't inherit any of a certain person's stubbornness, huh? [Look, he can already tell that there is a connection between a sword's personality and the master they feel closest to, even if there of course are differences. Kashuu seems both a lot more dainty and a lot more willful than Souji is, but they have the same needy nature, the same dependency, the same kind of hearts, desperate for love and big enough to contain the vast amounts they need.]
But yes, he seems very friendly and kind, much like the Ryouma-san I know - quite possibly even more so. So I'm sure things can be worked out.
no subject
[ the laughter slowly begins to bleed the tension out of haru, his skinny shoulders creeping back down into a more relaxed pose. maybe it'll be fine. okita-san seems nice like this. and though he knows the man's capable of devastating violence, well.. haru keeps company with literal deadly weapons. devastating violence is simply part of his day-to-day life now.
his mouth quirks up faintly--you'd almost miss it--in haru's version of a smile, maybe a little shy at the edges. ]
That's good, though. You'll get to meet everyone you haven't met yet. Ah.. not that everyone is here, but.. there are a few. [ some people think their households are busy? they haven't met haru's yet. ]
no subject
[Lies. He enjoys poking fun at people, and will probably reference the 'baby of the family' thing as soon as an opportunity arises. But for what it's worth, there won't ever be any real malice behind it, and he won't aim for causing any real hurt or upset. He just likes driving people up a wall.
Congratulations, Haru, another person you still qualify as the responsible adult next to. At least he's not centuries old.He looks childishly exited by the idea, because the loneliness of this place really has been getting to him, and getting invited over to what seems like a big, noisy, complicated family... well, it sounds about as close to home as he can get in Cerealia.]
I'm looking forward to it. I've spoken a bit to Souza-san - he was the one who told me about Kashuu - and I've run into a couple of others here tonight, so it seems like fun. Oh, wait! [Getting suddenly to his feet, he immediately sinks into a deep, graceful bow.] Thank you kindly for your very generous invitation. [He pauses, the solemn formality bursting like a soap bubble, turning into a soft giggle instead.] There, now it's official.
no subject
oh well. someone has to take care of all of them, after all. it might as well be haru. and if one of the shinsengumi is another one he has to chase after to eat correctly, that he has to take care of when they're injured, so be it.
still, he blushes again at the bow, fiddling with the hem of his jacket again. ] Um, you don't.. have to thank me. I mean, you're kind of.. extended family by virtue of being Kashuu-kun's family, so..
no subject
Vice Commanderbabysitter is honestly just begging to be taken care of by someone, because he's absolutely terrible at doing so himself. Especially the whole being sick part, he really stinks at taking care of that. And he usually defaults to acting like everyone's sibling, usually of the younger variety - at least when he's not being their mom. What a nice sword-inlaw to add to your already dysfunctional family.
He laughs again as Haru blushes, once more demonstrating his lack of understanding when it comes to personal space by gently poking his cheek.]
I guess we are, in a way. But I'm pretty sure that being accepted into someone's family is usually considered a great honor, so I don't think thanking you is out of place. [He wrinkles his nose a bit, considering.] Though I don't know what the word for this kind of family would be. [
What is the word for when you both have the same swordhusband again?]no subject
.. ah.. he doesn't know why he was ever nervous around this man. he really is a lot like kashuu and yamato.. he gently waves the finger away from his face, brows lifting. ]
You were technically already part. .. And I'd call it loud.. excitable. Bewildering. A little exhausting. Very large. But.. good.
no subject
...But he's also remarkably good at taking care of others for a person like that, so maybe he can be of use in that way.
The description makes him grin, nodding.] That sounds good. Sounds a lot like the rest of my family, really. [When your family is compared to the Shinsengumi and it's kind of accurate... consider your life, Haru. Consider your choices.] But then again, I suppose it's not strange that swords and warriors have some similarities.
