![]() A few weeks prior to December 26th, an invitation went out to all whom already reside in Cerealia. In delicate, curling script, it read: You are cordially invited by Natalia L.K. Lanvaldear to a Winter Ball to be held on the Eve of December 26th in the Gardens. Dress in your best attire and enjoy a magical evening of dance and fine cuisine. What do you mean we should fuss about worlds being destroyed? Get into the holiday spirit, you scrooge! And in regards to the new-comers: whether you have been wandering Cerealia over the course of the past few days and managed to receive one of the later waves of invitations or have simply suddenly appeared in the gardens with nothing but the (hopefully…. appropriate….) clothes on your back, welcome. The gardens have been transformed through the work of

phase iii;
for the most part, he mingles pretty casually, but at some point, he's being pulled aside and given a task. while the orchestra takes a break, control the music.
yuri, controlling the music. when he doesn't know the first thing about any of this. after being given basic instructions on how to operate everything (which seems simple enough, right?), he's left alone, and that's where things go awry. sure, he can operate it just fine, and only needs to do so for maybe fifteen minutes. did you know it's hard to find appropriate music on a device you've just learned to operate, especially when knowing what's appropriate in cerealia is probably very different than what he'd see back in terca lumireis?]
Okay... and, play.
[the first song that plays is immediately horrendously inappropriate, and quite possibly an assault on his ears. but he was told not to change songs midway through, so he lets it go.
the second song isn't much better, and he's left to wonder what this is all about.
but it's not until the third song that he makes the final conclusion that being a spot dj is a terrible idea.]
...That's enough. [he'll be flagging down whoever is willing to take this off his hands, though at this point? he kind of expects someone to be agitated with the sudden, unsuited music that's filling the ball. it's less of a ball and more of a disaster with music like this. seriously, don't leave a technologically inept swordsman in charge of the music, especially when he clearly doesn't want to do it, or a mess like this will ensue.]
judith;
I don't think that's a theory we should really be testing out right now. [probably. though it would be a hell of a lot more interesting.]
no subject
[ Yes, there's her point, right after she waltzed beautifully around it. ]
no subject
[because all of yuri's attempts have failed. maybe she can do something he can't here.]

natalia;
Maybe they need to get their hearing checked.
[because again, while he may be no expert on music, he's not even sure any of that even qualified as being music. probably for very different reasons than natalia, since it's not as if he's got a refined sense for these things, but still.
he knows that for an event this formal, it was definitely unsuited, and the people who enjoyed were probably the ones who also weren't used to events this formal. something like this seems like it's more suited for royalty and nobles, not the poor kids who aren't usually even allowed to look at these types of events.]

[In complete... honesty... It was a lot of racket to her, voices that were far too screechy or far too melodramatic. What ever happened to a symbol ballad? The beauty of artistry? But also she's doing her best to be a gracious hostess this evening though so far it hasn't taken her this much effort!]
But I suppose all guests will have their tastes... I just hope that more of that isn't played too frequently.
It's rather at odds with the rest of the scenery, is it not?
no subject
[at odds with the scenery, he means. yuri already knows he's well beyond out of place in this sort of setting (thanks, flynn), but he sure as hell isn't alone here. he's observant enough to have realized a slew of unfamiliar faces are mingling; he's even spoken to a couple who definitely weren't dressed for the occasion either.
who knows, maybe they're the ones who can appreciate new kids on the block and miley cyrus. they look as out of place as he feels, and the music definitely does a good job of adding to it. sorry, natalia. it's not you, it's him.]
no subject
Oh?
Then what do you think could be done to make more people feel at home?

yona;
[well, he's definitely grateful that someone is willing to take this off his hands, because it's a responsibility that yuri really just doesn't want at all here. with her picking up on how it works quickly, he's ready to take off to find flynn (and maybe strangle him for this whole situation)...
until the next song starts. and he's immediately stopping in tracks. she definitely did not do any better with picking a song that is suited for the situation.]
I got a feeling that's not the sort of thing they're gonna want to hear, either. [as far as his ears can tell, it's arguably worse. things yuri definitely doesn't get: rap. he may be no expert in music, but a song starting off that way just... hm. he's not sure what to do with this.]
no subject
She might have just accepted that if he hadn't returned.]
...you think so too? I guess that won't work. There's so much to choose from... I should change it, right?
[Not like there's any guarantee whatever comes next won't be just as bad, if not worse. Still, she feels like since she's here, she should try to do it right.]
no subject
[he shrugs. honestly, he doesn't care all that much about it when this is probably just making a big enough mess as it is. it's kind of a lose/lose situation, as far as yuri sees it. isn't this exactly why events like these are supposed to have professionals handing these matters at all times?
maybe he's still a little surprised this fell into his lap even if he's rolling with it. then again... his luck is pretty cursed, so maybe that has something to do with the outcome. either way, he's keeping a pretty neutral (if not slightly exasperated) stance on it.]
This is probably not helping things at all.
pyrrha;
Well, that makes one person.
[because yuri definitely did not enjoy that. or the two that came before it. but hey, if it's out of his hands now? then if she elects to keep going with that sort of music, it's not really his problem.
in any case, he's absolutely sure he was never supposed to wind up doing anything like this. it's not really natalia's fault, but there's not much that can be done for one of the professionals wishing to leave it unattended for a moment while they take care of... well, whatever it is they wanted to do with a small break.]
Pretty sure that's not exactly what they're looking for with something as formal as this. [he knows that much. wouldn't the nobles find music like this crass? he kind of does, and he's far from that type at all.]
no subject
Regardless, her hands stay off the DJ table.
Better men and women than her have met their match here. ]
Perhaps - you can defy their expectations. [ Imagine all the faces Natalia would make, Yuri! Imagine it!! ]
no subject
[he's not going to buy into it that easily. even if he takes her comments in stride (and seems even a bit amused at them), there is just certain bait he's not taking. three songs was absolutely more than enough for him; his approach from here on out is hands-off.
hell, if it was his way, from here on out he'd he walking out the door to get out of this formal getup. that's not really an option until he can get flynn off his back, though, so for the time being, he's left to abandon any lone wolf tendencies and socialize a bit.]
Maybe you should give the expectation-defying a go.
no subject
Pyrrha hadn’t intended on taking over, not strictly, but seeing his discomfort made her rethink that stance. She is unaware of how reluctant he is to socialize but if he wishes attention taken off of him after that disaster, then why not? Pyrrha steps up, her heels clicking delicately against the DJ booth’s floor.
And then this happens.
In the first few verses, Pyrrha does her best impression of a human popsicle, thoroughly bewildered by the lyrics. To Yuri, she ends up mouthing, ‘Rasputin?’ And then, by the third “love machine”, she’s struggling to turn the song off. ]
flynn;
I'm gonna start charging you a fee every time you do that.
[which is yuri's way of saying "hands off," before he backs up and immediately loosens his tie again. it's so suffocating to him—as if a formal event like this couldn't feel choking enough, the tie around his neck can only make it worse. ties are, in fact, evil as far as he can tell.
he really doesn't care what flynn wants in this situation, because flynn had absolutely no regard for what he wanted (which was to be anywhere but here. they've got bigger fish to fry. and while they can put off the end of the world to go hang out in yumanju, he doesn't want to put off getting back to the end of the world for some strange formal ball.]
You know what would do me good, Flynn? Not being forced into situations where I don't belong. Just like being in the knights didn't work for me, rubbing elbows with people in their playing field doesn't either. [he can socialize just fine if he wants to, but let it be somewhere that works for him. this? this isn't it, no matter how much flynn wants it.]
no subject
Seeing and experiencing something new won't kill you. [a pause] And you have to admit this is about as new as it gets. [his expression softens.] I'm not completely comfortable, either, you know.
[flynn glances around the area, still obviously in awe of how grandiose everything is. all the food, all the fancy clothes and whatever else: not even in his wildest dreams could he have imagined being here. then again, the same applies to becoming commandant. so much unbelievable stuff happening so quickly, it's a wonder his head isn't literally spinning.]
Being at something like this feels so surreal.
[lower quarter kids at a ball without getting kicked out after a minute? unheard of. that's actually the other part of why flynn dragged yuri here, just for him to experience something so impossible even if it definitely isn't yuri's thing.
and maybe he also didn't feel like being the only awkward poor kid at a fancy ball. hey, even a goodie-two shoes like him can have ulterior motives. a small smile comes yuri's way as flynn looks back in his direction.]
And I'll probably be stuck with going to these on a regular basis back home.
[so don't complain about looking acceptable for a couple hours.]
no subject
[even though there is a bit of bite to yuri's words, there's nothing about it that is actually malicious. the bite comes more from his annoyance at flynn's insistence and pushiness than any ill will—especially not about that position.
hell, if anyone is suited for that, it's flynn. if anyone is going to be able to make the changes to the empire from within and not follow the path that alexei set for the knights? it's flynn. flynn can learn from those mistakes, and from his own. yuri knows that. but yuri also knows that along with that, a lot of other things have to change too. day by day, flynn ends up a little further away from their roots as kids from the lower quarter; they may not be forgotten, but they'll become distant memories in time.
which isn't a bad thing. yuri knows he won't treat himself as above it, but use it as motivation—flynn is a guy that's destined to do great things and be remembered for them. he knows these things, so yuri can't be mad. even if there is something vaguely cathartic about the whole thing for him, he can't be mad on the whole.
...even if he is still annoyed about being dragged here to begin with.]
Pretty sure everything about this is unreal anyway. I think we passed the realm on beliveability the second we got sucked into this whole mess.
no subject
also so terrifying. everything will change. he'll change. he'll have to. no one in a position of power can be anything like he was. it's a fear unvoiced to anyone, but the fear of losing the freedom to be himself lingers on the edge of his mind more often than not. being commandant means being an ideal. it means holding yourself to the highest possible standard. it means being perfect. he's had a taste of it in the past few months and, truthfully speaking, the work is overwhelming. no complaining came, he would never, but some days he wished he could at least sleep like a normal person as opposed to random power naps throughout the week. the situation holds partial blame and won't likely change in intensity any time soon.
it boils down to the hard truth: he can't be that same lower quarter kid anymore. every move made, every action taken, every word spoken: everything needs to hold that same perfection to it. it's a burden he'll happily accept if it brings about change but it doesn't help ease the butterflies in his stomach about it.
nor does it erase that small hint of jealousy at yuri's freedom, freedom no longer available to flynn. ah well, he can handle it. yuri deserves that freedom far more, anyway.]
Fair enough, though I'd argue we passed it after a giant floating turd popped out of the sky and was gonna bring about the end of the world.
shoe;
...Well, at least someone is enjoying it.
[he guesses. he really didn't think anyone would be enthused by this, but hey... if he's enjoying it? more power to him, probably. he's not about to spoil shuu's fun here, even if his eardrums are saying he probably should.]
no subject
Why shouldn't I..? Isn't it a good song? [ You humans and your shitty taste, to be honest!! This is way better music than whatever they might have had back in Sengoku times.. probably nothing too interesting.. ]
.. Be-si-des, aren't you the one playing the music? And yet you don't like it?
[ Judging every single one of Yuri's life choices in this moment. ]
no subject
[meaning the music, or how it really works. he shrugs a bit in response. maybe if he knew how it really worked, he'd have an easier time at least parsing things like genre, but he's pretty lost about it himself. even if he is playing it down to an extreme here.]
no subject
[ Well, that's a quick judgement. But that's what Shuu is all about - you know, as most five year olds do.. ]
You're managing the music, but you're not even bothering to listen to it yourself or enjoying it.. then what are you doing here? Aren't you worthless in that case..? [ SLOW YOUR ROLL, SHUU, THIS IS A PARTY.. ]
