![]() A few weeks prior to December 26th, an invitation went out to all whom already reside in Cerealia. In delicate, curling script, it read: You are cordially invited by Natalia L.K. Lanvaldear to a Winter Ball to be held on the Eve of December 26th in the Gardens. Dress in your best attire and enjoy a magical evening of dance and fine cuisine. What do you mean we should fuss about worlds being destroyed? Get into the holiday spirit, you scrooge! And in regards to the new-comers: whether you have been wandering Cerealia over the course of the past few days and managed to receive one of the later waves of invitations or have simply suddenly appeared in the gardens with nothing but the (hopefully…. appropriate….) clothes on your back, welcome. The gardens have been transformed through the work of

[Clearly, this lady is perfectly safe to share all of this information with. Clearly.]
I mean, Yang and Jaune and Pyrrha and Weiss are.
[...]
Actually, I guess that's kind of a lot.
[But Blake is still missing.]

That's more than I imagined. It makes you wonder... "why us", doesn't it? We're only students, after all.
[ cinder can understand why someone would find her to be a threat but eight meddling kids? other than their penchant for finding themselves in the wrong place at the right time, she can't really understand ceres' choice. you know, aside from ruby and pyrrha. the other six? not so much. ]
no subject
Well, either way, here we are. So we should make the most of it and do our best!
[Ruby's starting to get used to being in the wrong place at the right time.]
We must be here for a reason.
no subject
You think? [ despite the fact that that's a rather obvious point of reasoning to make, cinder pretends like it isn't. ] It'd be nice to think that that means were destined for something important, wouldn't it?
[ in an almost mean girls way of thinking, she's trying to bait ruby into admitting even a hint of delusional self-importance in an so "you agree, you think you're the protagonist of your own hit youtube web series?" mean girls kind of way. ]
But like you said, we should do our best and that'd be easier if we stick together, don't you agree?
[ on everyday of the week, we wear red. ]
no subject
I think so long as we can help save and protect some people, that's important enough!
[sparkle sparkle. Truly, she is pure as the freshly fallen snow.]
So that sounds great! I'm sure if we all work together, it'll be great! [totally.
jeeze, cinder, stop trying to make fetch happen]

[ ruby... you honestly don't disappoint. cinder enjoys this. she enjoys how much of an open-book ruby is. all her strengths and motivations are almost too easy for cinder to take advantage of so like any shounen villain worth her due, cinder can't help but goad her into becoming stronger rather recognize her potential and kill her (why don't we all just stab ruby???). ]
You should be careful, that might be used against you someday.
[ waits for ruby to casually dismiss that overtly ominous statement in 3... 2... ]
no subject
Huh? I mean... even if it is, we can't just leave people behind, right? That's our job--as Huntresses.
[casually dismisses that overtly ominous statement.]
no subject
That's great to hear. [ she chuckles. ] So even if our greatest enemy was in danger, you'd rescue them if they were in need? I don't think I could be so heroic.
[ and like a puppy who doesn't understand that the world isn't entirely made up of sunshine and rainbows, cinder starts tricking it into believing that everything its done up until now has cause someone pain. that being cute and playful has it consequences. just, you know, a casual manipulation of emotions. cinder is keeping it cas' cause she's a cool mom. ]
no subject
[She's considering this rather thoroughly, thoughtful. But no matter how she looks at it, she can't see it as particularly heroic. After all--]
Even if they're bad, they're still people, after all! [and their job is to protect people.] And then... they can go to prison after, or something like that I'm not really entirely sure where Greatest Enemies go.
[calm down cool mom.]
no subject
and wow, she loves ruby's naivete. it keeps her young. ]
"Heroic" isn't the right word... "Dutiful", maybe? [ cinder feigns an expression like she really needs to ponder the matter. ] It definitely takes a certain kind of pride to automatically assume someone is in need of your help.
[ which is, again, cinder's vague attempt to enlighten ruby. befriending everyone has it's advantages but also it's obvious disadvantages. it's still a delight to witness how ruby can be so unaware that she is dangerously close to being the fly in cinder's spiderweb (if she isn't already). ]
no subject
That's what we're for, right? To help people who need our help! [And people who don't need their help can handle it by themselves, or ask them for it, or whatever.
Ruby has a very simplistic view of how things work, that's for sure.
Either way, as nice as this talk of morality was, she gets distracted--]
Ooh, chocolate! Have you tried some?
