Sleigh Bells Are Ringing, Snow is Screaming… wait, what?

For once, CERES efforts in decorating and promoting holiday shopping opportunities to the public as well as chances to get into Christmas spirit has somehow yet to cause any of the usual trouble or headaches. They have not made any grand announcements or bold releases, not even attempted to sell you on on a ViViD Christmas special that you absolutely will regret not trying out. And considering how long its been since anything has gone wrong, some might be finding it a little too good to be true (or maybe even boring).

But, Christmas Eve has come and gone, and so has Christmas, and there wasn’t even so much as an attempt for some festivities. There is a light snowfall throughout the day hours, a dry snow that will cover the ground by 3:00PM, but lighter than dust. Luckily, there is little (if any) wind even in the form of a breeze.

Come the next hour, things start to creep in a different direction.
Is it coincidence
that when you
rearrange the letters
in Santa’s name, it
spells “Satan”?
That’s one big coincidence.

//SCENARIOS.EXE
PHASE I
[ 16:00 ] At 4:00 PM, the lightly falling snow will stop and no sounds will be heard.

What will be heard is faint sound of ‘hohoho’ and ‘sleigh bells’ faintly in the distance distinctly in one direction but when you turn that way it seems to disappear and you can’t pick up a trace of sound. It will keep occurring intermittently no matter where you are and each interval of 15 minutes, it will sound as if it’s gotten closer but the same things will occur.

by 6:00 pm, when it sounds really close (like right behind the character or next to them), when they turn they’ll hear the sound of laughter that comes from someone they greatly admire or care about to one side of them. However, unlike how everything else has disappeared, that person remains and even seems to recognize they are there. At first, it seems well enough as they will ask innocent questions such as “What are you looking around for?” and if told the truth, their important person will kindly brush them off as joking and tell them they are imagining it. If told ‘nothing’, the important person will prod them with curiosity (you can have it be annoying, whiny, friendly--however that character would most likely nag them to let them in, including things said such as “you can tell me”).

Regardless of choice from there, the person will eventually decide to assist in locating this sound, as your character will hear it once more and from the sudden surprise on the other person’s face it seems they may have heard it, too.

At 6:30pm, the person will give up, suggesting you guys go back (go home, go shop, go eat, whatever the character would suggest as something fun and interesting. if they are the type of character who would just simply part ways with the other and say they will meet them back somewhere else, that’s fine, too!) In the end, they will start to walk past the PC if they are in front of them, but as soon as they are behind him the PC will get a hand on the shoulder and pulled to be whispered to by that person in the ear (or any variant of it at the player’s discretion to sound more like said individual): “You always did have a habit of looking for the things you can never find. A trait of only the most worthless.” followed by a strong wind that drowns out laughter of the person when they came, but this time much crueler. The wind is gale force so the character will not in any way be able to turn around fast enough to see whether the person walks off or disappears.

Looking to the ground, there are footprints, though, that suggest that person was there. Unfortunately, the snow is light and not wet, so unless the character looks quickly they may miss the evidence. And with the wind starts the heavy wet snow, increasing until blizzard conditions are reached.

OOC NOTES:
  • If doing this prompt, people who tag into other people’s top levels can choose if they also have an important person that’s come to them in the same way or they can simply be alone.
  • Both characters can see each other’s important persons (assuming the individual tagging the top level has one), and they will treat the other PC polite enough but would do what they normally do with strangers while around their PC. Players might want to take the opportunity to do some simple ‘npcing’ of their character’s important person in relation to the tags their top levels receive or the tagged into, but it is by no means required. Just one more potential thing you can add to your threads if it helps or will be more fun/interesting ).
  • If any player-characters would happen to have the same important person, the player-character entering the thread will have their version start to slow down in their movements until they are behind them and no longer keeping up. When they turn around to look for them, they won’t be there any longer, but they will be fully acknowledged by the spectre and act as if the newly arrived isn’t remembering correctly (they ran ahead to find the player they are with now or etc.)
  • The spectre should at least be believable to be able to cause doubt on whether it is real or in their heads or some other type of trick. If directly asked, the NPC will never quite say one way or another, but sort of be sympathetic to their uncertainty or laugh it off or dismiss it… again, however that character’s NPC would react to being doubted.
  • It doesn’t have to be their “MOST IMPORTANT” person. Just someone that they are close enough to that their opinions matter/the player character really misses/they would be bothered by them not finding them worth anything/etc.
PHASE II
[ 17:00 ] Now that blizzard conditions have suddenly come into play, including white outs, all that lighting doesn’t seem to be much help (and that’s before any lighting finally ends up blowing out due to the conditions). You might want to look for that person that was with you, because you swore you saw footprints in the dry snow before it was all erased with the force of the wind.

Traveling outside may be more dangerous than you intend, however, not because of the cold, but because you can’t see who’s (or what) coming at you nor who’s (or what) coming behind you… or from any other direction, either.

Pretty convenient for an accidental murder in the form of a hit and run by a moving vehicle.

...Or a sleigh speeding forward by the work of nine reindeer and equipped with saw-blades used for ice cutting in place of the normal runners. You will want to get out of the streets as fast as you can because, while you will not be consistently chased, increased attempts at various times will be made on your life the longer you stay out.

While your character is welcome to run into the nearest place they can or continue to stay outside despite being an intended murder victim, the combination of the disorienting whiteout along with the sleigh attacks will strategically attempt to push characters towards the large mall that has been now shut down for the evening. They will find the doors unlocked and most likely others there that have be also driven here by the same situation. Somethings not right, though. Because the mall suddenly doesn’t look the way it once did, especially if you were just there earlier in the day. You are about to find out that the lot of you aren’t much safer, inside, either. Be prepared to run or fight your way out.
PHASE III
[ xx:xx ] Depending which side of the mall you enter from depends on the layout of the mall and what you’ll be finding. Please note Cerealia’s mall is incredibly large so it would be quite the effort to go from one end to the other. However, it is possible, and if you reach the middle of the mall, the two variations of the mall will collide with one another. Once you step over into the other version, whatever dangers you faced from the other side will cease. However, now you have the other sides dangers to face, as well.

3A: WARM
The mall looks as if it’s been abandoned suddenly—there are no guards or any sign of movement initially. Despite the power being out, you will actually be able to search if your characters want to and get the power to turn back on. Be aware that turning the power back on in the mall will result in a change noted below for both prompt 3A and 3B.** Regardless of whether you turn the lights on first or stay in the dark, you will find the multi-levels of the mall scattered with various gifts, left for all of you as gratitude for complying with coming to the mall. These may or may not be your definition of a gift, however. Every package is addressed to someone who has shown up at the mall, yourself included. While wandering by a gift that doesn’t have your name on it will do nothing, doing the same for one that does… Merry Christmas to you! Santa’s elves will be busting out of the packages and will solely be focused on you and you alone. They’ll be sporting just about anything and everything you could think of they could use to harm you, but it’ll be in the form of a creepy toy or candy (to try and choke/suffocate you with if they manage to get close enough to you to do it)—basically anything that could be harmless but is now not, but they will avoid any direct death methods. Their intention is incapacitate you to the point they can eat you. Note they are not easy to kill, but they are killable. However, there will always be at least one elf out chasing you. You might want to team up to take these guys out. (think of them as the hardest normal enemy on a map for your level).

Whether you turned the lights on yourself or not, at some point the lights will come on and make your lives more festive: different elves will be appearing on the upper floors with just about and every possible projectile weapon. There is probably even a canon or two, as well, so watch out! But probably nothing bigger than a canon… and no rocket launchers because there would be no fun in that if everyone died too quickly during playtime. These types of elves are more numerous but they are easier to dispatch and do not have a specific target. They also don’t care if they kill you, but they are more likely to try and slow you down so they can watch you become dinner for one of the bigger ones.

3B: COLD
The other side of the mall looks like quite a bit different and in heavy disrepair.

It is also possible (although more difficult) from this side of the mall to turn on lights (even if the lights will be a lot less numerous than on the other side of the mall.) There are no christmas decorations here, just the snow littering the wrecked structure. Even though it is clear there is a hole in the roof, for some reason the blizzard outside is not through it. Instead it’s just a quiet and light snowfall.

But this is side of the mall where there are LESS, but quite a bit more dangerous enemies. The elves that appear are identical to the ones in packages on the other side of the mall, however, they do not sport weapons other than their sharp teeth and claws (despite pictures, these features aren’t super noticeable on the ones on the other side of the mall like this side until they get at your throat). They are also faster and while they also want to eat you, they don’t care if they rip you apart in the process before getting to eat. All-in-all this would be a lot more of a visually gruesome death to experience as well as watch as the victim will end up in pieces. Since these are a little stronger than their counterparts hiding in the presents, there also aren’t as many (probably 1 for every two characters at all times). They would be the strength of a small mini-boss.

But, it won’t be long because you hear some inhuman snorts and growls that don’t sound very animallike, either. looking up you’ll find that it looks like Santa’s let his 9 reindeer out for the hunt and they’re coming in after you.

There’s only 9 of them (you know dasher, dancer…etc. etc..), but they are each the strength of a harder mini-boss. They withstand a lot of damage and the more injury they take, the more aggressive/frenzied they become. They will eat you/tear you apart/trample you/impale you with their antlers, whatever. While you’ll see them come in from the roof, they act like predators and use the shadows and disrepair of the mall to their advantage to try and corner you and otherwise surprise you. Your best chance with them is to stick together as one of you alone won’t be able to kill one of them), but they will make every effort they possibly can to separate all of you to take you each out one by one (and, why yes, the reindeer will gang up on you once they separate you like a little lamb from its heard…).

This side of the mall is definitely a team-effort survival trip. Each reindeer is slightly different in its methods, but who can really tell the difference when things are at this stage? Rudolph IS THE BOSS OF THE PACK… taking him out first will help your characters greatly, although he’s also the most difficult (and your characters would have to icly figure out killing him will actually help them out, too).

***CONCERNING TURNING ON THE LIGHTS (PROMPTS 3A + 3B): If characters on either side end up turning the lights on manually, they will also end up releasing a creature that is unkillable and will stalk your characters until you are too far away from it and it gives chase to another (so you have to run away when it finds you). The trick to encountering it the least amount of times is to constantly keep moving, although this will make any strategic things difficult against other problems being faced. It is possible to stun it/slow it down temporarily to aid in characters escaping when it shows up if the character has the ability to do it (summons, magic weapons, superhuman strength characters, etc).

This monster is also the only one that will not cease its attacks and ignore you should you cross between the center of the mall. So, yes, if it’s chasing you and you run straight through… it’s gonna CHASE YOU STRAIGHT THROUGH into the other version/side of the mall, so don’t stop D: !!
PHASE IV
[ xx:xx ] And if you didn’t run to the mall, or didn’t get chased by santa’s killer sleigh, or heck, maybe you stayed inside your apartment all day? Don’t feel too safe for too long. If you aren’t celebrating christmas properly, aka in an area (a building, an office, a bathroom stall, your apartment, your bed etc etc) that is lacking either a Christmas Tree or the proper milk and cookies for Santa to assist him while he is so busy this night, he’s not going to be happy. Which means, he’s going to come punish you for your lack of respect for the hardworking. It doesn’t pay to be impolite to your elders, you know. This is why we can’t have nice things.

The room/area has to have both the Christmas Tree and the milk & cookies in order to be safe. This is literally the only way to keep Santa from coming at you with a machete like a jolly serial-killer. He starts with a machete, but he can pull just about anything out of his toy sac (semi-automatic machine gun, you got it…). Because Santa is magical, he is unkillable and you can’t injure him, either. The best you can do is break his weapons to stall him and hide, but he’ll stalk around looking for you, telling you what a naughty boy/girl you’ve been and now you’re hiding from the consequences! You can hide from him under beds, in lockers, closets, etc, and while he won’t open any of those things unless you make noise to alert him, he will leave. Don’t stay in the hiding spot for too long, though, because he will come back and that time he will find you.

The trick to getting off of Santa’s murder list? While he disappears once he’s lost sight of you (maybe 15-20 minutes is the grace period that he’ll leave you alone), get a christmas tree and get those milk and cookies out. OR run to a place that has both of these things.

While Santa is chasing/stalking you, he will talk to you and give hints on what the characters need to do to be spared (things along the lines of “good little girls and boys always leave Santa milk and cookies for his long journey” and “where is your christmas spirit? not even a christmas tree for old santa to put his gifts under.” etc etc.).

Once you complete this, he will return and be planning to be murderous once more, but once he sees the tree and cookies he will immediately stop and be extremely jolly and forget you in favor of the cookies in milk as well as putting a couple presents under the tree like he didn’t just terrorize the living snot out of you with sharp objects. And then he’ll be heard with his trademark commentary for those familiar with the Santa Claus lore: “MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL GOOD NIGHT…” and disappear without (anymore, or at least, yours) bloodshed.

[In these conditions, having something in mind doesn't mean anything; it's hard to tell exactly where they are, much less where they're going. And even if she wanted to go one way, the wind is almost actively pushing her in another direction, so she gives up trying to find something concrete and decides she'll dive into the first place that becomes apparent. Whether it's someone else's house, or the office of the prime minister, or a portal to another dimension--

Portal... Wait a second. Couldn't she just...?

Oh, for crying out loud, why didn't she think of that the second they got attacked? Slowing down, she raises her hand and creates a portal, not bothering to double-check her landing because it really, really, really doesn't matter to her at this point.]

Hurry up!

[The telling scrape of metal against ice comes around again, and she doesn't wait for him before letting her form dissipate into the portal.]

[personal profile] rebelia 2015-05-04 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
[What, she can still do that here? IV doesn't have the time to be offended over the fact that they've been running all this way like aimless fools when she could have just –

At Rio's demand and the alarming sounds of metal against ice, IV throws a quick glance over his shoulder before following suit. It's been a while since he used this method of travel, but that's not an issue when Rio's decided the destination for them. He lets her power carry him to that place, where, with luck, they won't have to deal with such an absurd thing as a killer sleigh.]
icefallen: (Come on、Ryouga...)

[personal profile] icefallen 2015-05-04 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
[When she steps back onto solid ground, Rio surveys her surroundings -- or tries to, considering how dark it is in here. A power outage... wonderful. But from what eerie silver light does make it through the windows, it looks like the mall, only not nearly as closed up as it should logically be in these conditions. There's some stuff littered on the ground, though... What is going on?

She can hear voices from further inside; surprised yelps and people shouting things indecipherable from this range. There's some odd clacking and thudding of objects she can't quite determine to go along with them, too. Uncertain what to make of it, she glances at IV. Out of the freezer, and into a much different frying pan, it seems...]

That's one problem out of the way, but... What is all this?
rebelia: (11)

[personal profile] rebelia 2015-05-04 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
[IV hits the scene shortly after Rio. The sudden darkness clouds his vision, making it difficult to see, but his eyes adjust soon enough and he turns his head toward the noise. Once the initial clamor dies down, he returns Rio's glance.]

Whatever it is, at least we weren't followed.

[At a second glance, the objects seem to be packages of some sort. IV walks on ahead for a better view. When there's no sign of movement or anything of the sort, he stoops down to study a name tag attached to one of the packages. It's addressed to somebody he doesn't know.]

They're . . . gifts.
icefallen: (Oh.)

[personal profile] icefallen 2015-05-04 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Christmas gifts in a mall, I could somewhat understand. But...

[Not that she's feeling very merry or in the holiday spirit, anyway. Checking out a different one, then another, then another, they all seem to be addressed to different people. But there's a few names she recognizes -- one of them is definitely Vector's (and, she imagines, it is a hunk of something less-than-pleasant). Standing up, her eyes travel down the abandoned walkway.]

Aren't these all addressed to people here? But what are they doing lying around here? And... does that mean there's two for us, as well?

[There's something really wrong about this. As if a bloodthirsty Santa wasn't bad enough, her stomach is starting to do anxious flips. This is too convenient.]
rebelia: (12)

[personal profile] rebelia 2015-05-04 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
[After checking several more packages, IV does come across a name or two that he recognizes. The same thought as Rio's occurs to him then, and his eyes narrow before he rises to a stand.]

If there is, I'm not opening them. Who knows what's inside.

[Not that he's keen about finding out what's inside the mall as a whole, either, but he starts to head down the abandoned walkway. He needs to know what's waiting here and if what lies in wait is relevant to what (whom) he'd seen outside. It leads him to wonder as to Rio's reason for bringing them here, which he'll ask about in a faintly softer voice.]

Why did you choose this place, anyway?
icefallen: (A-HEM.)

[personal profile] icefallen 2015-05-04 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
[The question is pretty simple, but it makes Rio blanch, obviously caught in her moment of stupidity.]

I-- Um, well...

[It's not necessary to describe how it works to him, who she has heard from Ryouga to have used the portals before under Tron's power. But when you visualize a location on a three-dimensional map without actually knowing where you're traveling from, it apparently can give some strange results. Not that she's ever had reason to find out, based on all her memories; while it's useful information in general, it's hardly useful to her now that she's already misfired.]

I messed up, all right? It won't happen again. So let's just--

[She doesn't get to finish the thought, because the next present they pass bursts open with a loud pop, and things that look like anything but elves land on their feet as if they'd been waiting for this moment. Rio jumps out of her skin, whirling around with her heart in her throat. Watery-skinned and jagged-teethed, they almost look like an undead horror movie creature.

...And act the part, too. One has a jump rope and is brandishing it in the same way as a lasso; another has a big lollipop it seems to want to use as a hammer; yet another has a set of jacks. The pattern seems to continue in this way, and they start to move, still with that crooked grin on their faces.]
rebelia: (13)

[personal profile] rebelia 2015-05-04 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
[He knew those presents were bad news from the moment he saw names attached to them. When the big reveal happens, he isn't as surprised as he might have been caught more unawares, and so he's ready to leap into action the moment one of the hideous elves comes near; he scuttles toward and kicks it hard enough to send it bouncing across the floor. The effort's hardly enough to do any real damage. IV is only human, after all.

The others begin to close in on them, their makeshift weapons poised in each of their unique ways to do harm. It's comical, but not appreciative in a circumstance like this one. IV turns on his heels as he reaches out to snatch Rio by the wrist in order to bolt down the walkway.]

Looks like one of our names was on there. [Why else would it have burst open?] Let's go!
icefallen: (Try saying that one more time.)

[personal profile] icefallen 2015-05-05 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
[As she runs alongside him, Rio glances back at the elves in hot pursuit of them, and begins to feel something pull to the surface of her heart. Even if they run, what else could be waiting? Another "gift"? And who says they'll even stop chasing them at all if they loop around?

She thinks to herself about how IV didn't hesitate to pull her out of his giant mistake -- maybe he just wasn't ready to be at fault for someone else's death yet, but regardless, a fragment of her feelings from back then become too vivid to ignore, and she yanks her wrist free, jumping up and over the short elves in one bound as they skid to a halt and try to turn around again.

This time it was her mistake, so it's up to her to do the same thing for him.]

Hmph. So it is me they're focused on...

[Since they didn't beeline straight for IV with that opening she gave them and all. A pause as she takes a few steps back to put IV safely out of her range, withdrawing her lapis from inside her coat. From just that, it's pretty clear what she intends to do.]
rebelia: (09)

[personal profile] rebelia 2015-05-05 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
[Startled, IV staggers to a stop and spins around when Rio yanks away from him. What's more surprising is how she jumps away and the elves follow like he's not even there. That's good news for him. At the same time, he looks on with a sense of foreboding, because putting distance between them can only mean Rio's up to something by herself.

He takes a step forward, still cautious regardless of the elves' concentration on Rio, and then stops there as he eyes the lapis now in her grasp. Seeing that, he gives her a shout that, maybe, bears a hint of apprehension.]

Hey, Rio!
icefallen: (Want to try saying that again?)

[personal profile] icefallen 2015-05-05 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
[Rio hears him, picks up the peculiar note in his voice, and hesitates, her breath catching in her throat while uncertainty darts across her face. She didn't consider that maybe he doesn't want to see Merag again -- and who would, in his position? He's freshly off being killed by them, after all. But... if she doesn't do something... Who can she protect? Not him. Not even herself.

She holds still for a second in indecision, just long enough for the one with the jump rope to latch onto her leg and start trying to climb up. Tearing it off her leg (and leaving a visible slash in her tights from its claws), she flings it into a store window.

...There's an idea. There must be something in the shops they can "borrow" for their purposes, right? Putting her lapis away, she lets her eyes wander to the storefront windows.]

Find something! I don't care what it is!
rebelia: (22)

[personal profile] rebelia 2015-05-05 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
[At a momentary loss, IV can only give a rigid nod before he darts into the nearest store. It's shocking that Rio decided against using the lapis, and the fact that she did propels him to move faster with a greater sense of urgency. The elves may not be after him, but it isn't his well-being he's concerned about. He cost her her trump card.

With his luck, there's not much in the store that can be used as a weapon. There's a fairly tall stool behind the counter, though, and he decides that that's good enough. He hooks his hands around two of its legs, and then, stepping out toward the nearest elf, swings.

The jacks scatter across the floor as the elf holding it, struck by the seat of the stool, goes airborne. It's about the best IV can do.]
icefallen: (Something's wrong...)

[personal profile] icefallen 2015-05-05 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[Her hands are shaking at this point. Now what? She could portal out, but how many others who have been driven here don't have that luxury? Rio steels herself, kicks another elf away, and dashes behind a mannequin display, removing the arm of it and using it to bat her pursuers away.

After a few rounds of punting them and having them boomerang right back towards her, she decides enough is enough -- these things aren't going to give up until she kills them, but she also won't leave the others who have been stranded here under the same circumstances. Opening a portal behind IV, she looks up as she starts stepping back.]

...Go. At the very least, you should be safe.
rebelia: (17)

[personal profile] rebelia 2015-05-05 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[For the most part, IV sticks close to Rio in an effort to fend off the elves' assault (they still refuse to go anywhere near him, and it's beginning to rub him the wrong way). Much as he'd hate to admit it, they're not making progress. If anything, they're more than likely to wear themselves out first.

He starts when the portal opens behind him, whirling and then back around to watch Rio. That's not what he wants to hear at all.]

Are you serious? There's no way I'm running!
icefallen: (I'll protect myself!)

[personal profile] icefallen 2015-05-06 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
[Rio stares at him for a second, or as long as she can considering she's still getting attacked. After another swing of the mannequin arm, she sighs in defeat and drops it.]

I'm beginning to see why Ryouga's relationship with you is what it is.

[Closing her fist, the portal closes with it. Once more, she takes out her Baria Lapis -- if he won't go, and she won't go, then she's just going to have to bite the bullet and change, whether either of them like it or not.]

...Sorry.

[Her eyes dart quickly up to IV's, as if to convey something, and then are blocked out by light when she transforms. Her duel disk manifests, too, and while it could almost certainly be used as a weapon in its own right with those points, it's got better uses. Stiffening her posture, she heads right for her extra deck and places her monster on the disk. It isn't necessary to summon her over-hundred Numbers here; her usual fare should do.]

Come! Sylphine!

[There's a feminine, birdlike call when the Sub-Zero Bird Beast does a quick flip in midair, hovering between Rio and the elves. She wastes no time issuing her command.]

Ice Ray!

[It seems like a mere shower of large projectile icicles, but they're charged icicles, it seems, because the ones that hit the floor leave a small, fresh trail of ice in their wake. The ones that hit the elves lodge themselves in and freeze the area around the impact site, but on they go, rolling right back up. Only this time, the rebound is more sluggish than before; obviously it did some good.]

Hmph... persistent.

[The apology stuns IV into silence as he watches the scene unfold, from how Rio changes (it's still her, because she told him either name was fine) to how her summoned monster manages a proper counterattack after all this time. The display is, to be honest, incredible.

At his side, his hand twitches out of longing for his own duel disk, to be able to set down his own card and fight alongside her. It's a need he can't fulfill until he finds replacements, so he's stuck with standing where he's conveniently out of the way.

Still, IV doesn't miss a beat when one of the elves rolls back up next to him. He all but slams the stool down on it – a combination of deciding he no longer needs it and might as well, because he tears away without a second glance to focus on Rio again. Indeed, the elves are rather sluggish at getting back on their feet.]

A few more times should be enough . . .
icefallen: (Stop right there.)

[personal profile] icefallen 2015-05-07 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
"A few"? I don't think that will be necessary.

[Feeling her pride flare a bit, she slams a foot down stubbornly in front of her. It should have been one hit, as far as she's concerned, but clearly they're just too stupid to die when they're supposed to.]

Sylphine! Perfect Freeze!

[Sylphine fires off a stream from her wings that looks like water, but impacts like the very essence of winter itself, flash-freezing the elves to the ground and most likely dulling their senses to boot. There's a faint shimmer in the aftermath, and the bird-beast drifts back, seeming to know exactly what her duelist is planning to do next.

Without a word, Rio walks up to the elves, seeming calm but giving off a threatening aura. The speed at which she swings out her leg to sweep them all with is hard to process, but it's a hard enough whack to not only incapacitate all of them, but to break the very ice they're encased in. With limbs frostbitten and probably a few bones broken, the remaining elves slump to the ground with a few stubborn twitches and weak reaching for their target before giving in.

She doesn't dismiss Sylphine in the aftermath, though, only glances at IV -- beyond him, even, right down the hallway.]

There are other people here in the same situation as us, aren't there? And I'm sure not all of them have the ability to defend themselves. At the very least, I want to stay here and help as many of them as I can before I try to leave.

[Then her attention focuses back on IV, eyes softening a bit. It's a bit surprising how effective the Barian gaze can be when there are no other facial features for her to express emotion with.]

...Last chance. Are you sure you don't want to go back?

[The whole display is incredibly brutal, yet still nothing that surprises IV, who's already witnessed the ruthless might of the Barians. A part of him seizes, however, upon being the next recipient of Rio's attention.

He opens his mouth to protest, only to pause as the air is about to escape his throat.

The implications of her words are clear as day to him. He shouldn't be here. A human without any of his primary assets like him has no place in the battlefield. That he's so laughably weak next to the likes of Rio, who's what she is, stings his pride as a duelist and more. No matter how softly she looks upon him, IV can't help the clenching of his jaw at the brutal truth. He doesn't want to go.

Friends don't walk away to save themselves while hanging the others out to dry. They're not supposed to do that. That's not how this works.

But this isn't something as linear as a duel. He can't stand by and watch, because there's no telling what might appear in a place teeming with unknown danger like this. The circumstances make the decision for him and he grits his teeth before turning away, his voice quiet.

I get it. I'll go.
icefallen: (But what if...?)

[personal profile] icefallen 2015-05-07 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[Suddenly, it strikes her how he just took her words, and her face changes that minute bit to look surprised. It can't be easy if he doesn't have his deck or disk, or even his crest and bracelet, but Rio doesn't have faith in her ability to protect all of them, not anymore. It isn't him, it's her. But would he even believe that?]

IV, I wasn't trying to...

[No portal opens just yet; she is still the one in control here. In the end, it's up to her whether he gets hurt or not, and it's a burden she's not sure she's capable of carrying.

...Back then, she couldn't protect anyone either, only made things worse. Who's to say it will be different now? Forgetting momentarily that she's still a Barian, she steps closer to him. Even if she puts him back in his apartment, there's nothing to say that murderous thing from before won't track him down there, too -- and then he'd really be in trouble.

Her fists close up. As long as she knows where he is, she can at least try to keep him safe better. He doesn't deserve to die twice; she knows what that's like.

(Dying really hurts, after all.)]

Fine. I've changed my mind. You're staying here, where I can keep an eye on you.

[Whatever she intended, they don't see eye to eye, much as if they're engaging in two separate conversations at once. IV's wounded pride flares when Rio steps toward him, and he responds in kind. It shouldn't bother him, but her Barian form in their current situation puts him on the defensive, whether or not he's aware of his tone.

He should be happy that she changed her mind. Instead, his hands curl into fists, and he feels slighted that he can't be trusted to take care of even himself – and more importantly, to make his own decisions like he's some kind of unreliable buffoon.

It aggravates an old, old wound that closes up his chest.]

I told you, didn't I? I'll go. If I stay here, I'll just get in the way.
icefallen: (Of course I'm complaining!)

[personal profile] icefallen 2015-05-08 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
[Now she's just stuck -- if he goes, he's going to feel like shit, but if he stays, he's going to be pissed at her for disrespecting his wishes. Against her better judgment, she sighs and continues drawing closer to him.]

Oh, stop it. That wasn't what I--

[She's on the verge of berating him for being such a petulant toddler about this, but a flicker of light catches her eye, and it makes her stop.

Ah... so he does have something he can use, and it's reacting to the energy it's picking up from her at this very moment. Her eyes fall on his bracelet, which she hadn't noticed until just now in all the confusion. Why didn't he just use that before?!]

...No. You're not going to get in the way. You're going to stop being so petulant about it and use the weapon you've had all along, because we're going to work together to purge this place as best we can. Understand?

[God, he's just as stubborn as Ryouga. Rio gives him a look much like the one she might wear with a human face, almost comically so considering how different her Barian form is and the emotional baggage it has for both of them.]

[personal profile] rebelia 2015-05-08 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
[He blinks and pulls back, straightening. That she's more or less told him to "grow up" doesn't sit in his thoughts for long. Whatever she's looking at (never mind how she looked at him earlier in a manner unbecoming of her present form), he doesn't understand what she could mean as he follows her gaze.]

"Weapon"? What are you talking about?

[The bracelet bleeps at the same time that IV notices it. Assuming this to be what she's referring to, he lifts his hand with an arched eyebrow to inspect it. He still puzzles over Rio's words: He doesn't see how the bracelet can be applied outside of duels in a place like this, considering the highly specific purpose with which it'd been crafted.]

This is supposed to be my weapon?

[No, he doesn't understand.]
icefallen: (Oh.)

[personal profile] icefallen 2015-05-08 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
[Perhaps he wasn't the one who crafted it, and therefore wouldn't know, but though the container is just technology, the power inside it is of Barian origin. And that, she can work with. She's just... not quite sure how it will respond to such a thing. Rio puts her hands on her hips, another posture more human than not, and strides up to tap the crystal on it.

It reacts with a warm glimmer, and she hums as if getting up in his personal space to figure it out herself is no big deal.]

Ah... so it is.

[She's never done it before, but maybe... Holding her hand out expectantly, she makes her request.]

Let me see it for a moment? I've got an idea.

[personal profile] rebelia 2015-05-08 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
[Rio's proximity to him is the last thing on his mind as he looks up at her and then back down to the bracelet, still figuring out her meaning. The bracelet continues to react to her Barian presence, and he nods to nobody in particular. Good, so it's functional even after everything.

The request is an awkward one, however. IV's gaze flickers between Rio and the bracelet again, before he slowly removes the latter from his wrist. It's a valuable artifact to be handing over to a Barian, but it's his and so he gets to decide who has it. If it'll let him be that much more useful, he'll show it to her as many times as her heart desires.

He deposits the bracelet, gem and all, on Rio's palm.]

Here.
icefallen: (But we did it.)

[personal profile] icefallen 2015-05-08 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
[It's tough to see, but she smiles, inasmuch as a Barian can smile without lips. Rio turns it over and over, then dips her head low and draws the gem of it up towards the crystal on her headdress. What follows is strange; even the gems in her hair seem to glitter in response to whatever it is she's doing, and her eyes fall closed as she focuses. To her, it feels like reorganizing wires in her mind, altering connections and changing the cables on a few of them until she's satisfied, then plugging in a little of her own energy as a power source (although, with how well-engineered the bracelet is, it really only needs a tiny sliver to get it moving).

There's a brief moment from the outside where the bracelet flashes like it's being activated again, and the faint outline of IV's crest is visible on every reflective surface nearby, including every one on Merag's body. When it calms down, she drops it back into IV's hand.]

You should already know how to use this, so I imagine the basics require no explanation. But as this was always meant to be a protective crest, I've amplified its function a bit.

[Morbid though it may seem, she turns to the forgotten corpses of the elves from before. Well, if they don't want to risk triggering another present opening, no doubt with the same contents, he may as well test it here. The "weapons" they had before seem to be just toys, so she grabs a small handful of the jacks from before.]

You shouldn't need the energy from a duel to activate it anymore. Moreover, it should be able to manifest physically now as well as protect you from spiritual harm. I'm going to throw these at you; see if you can deflect them.

[Pausing, she backs up a few steps makes an underhanded toss at him, going light enough that they won't hurt if he fails.]
