Who: Sousei and Kratos aka the Deadpan Dad Duo and then Sousei and Souji aka Stop Making People Bleed On the Floor and a bonus Sousei and Tenka Make Bad Life Choices
When: IC: 1/13 | OOC: 6/1
Where: The Dojo
What: this is how bonding works
Rating/Warning: Just dummies being dumb here
kratos;
[Sousei spends the majority of his time at the dojo (even more so now that there's so much noise and activity in his apartment) so it's really no surprise that he's generally there when other people come in to check it out.
Case in point: Kratos.
Even wrapped up in his basic sword exercises, Sousei couldn't miss that red hair, and so when he finally finishes his repetitions, he lowers his sword and tilts his head towards the visitor. He's not even quite out of breath yet, but then--he practices a lot.]
... I don't believe we ever exchanged names, though the circumstances probably explain enough about that.
souji;
[On the other hand, someone Sousei is always down to spar with these days is Okita Souji. The Shinsengumi captains are all wickedly skilled, and he has to fight hard to hold his own--which means that by the time they're finished beating on each other with those wooden practice swords, the both of them are black and blue.
Good job, guys.
Either way, Sousei seems satisfied, even as he pauses and frowns at his bokutou--there's some blood on it, and so he reaches for a cloth to clean it. They may go a little harder than is intended when it comes to this sort of thing.
And, quite frank and deadpan--]
Did we get blood on the floor? [wow he has so much concern for Souji's well-being]
tenka;
[It's...admittedly been really nice to be able to spar with Tenka again. It's been a really long time, but even so, they fell right back into the pattern easily. So they've gotten back into the swing of sparring, and of pushing each other to be better and better and better and--
Well, maybe that's why their spars are getting more and more intense.
Sousei doesn't want to lose to Tenka, after all, and he knows Tenka is the same way; they've always been like that, even as children, and now it's even worse if anything.
So this spar in particular has been incredibly intense, and Sousei knows immediately when he's overstepped--he doesn't have the time to correct it, and he knows Tenka's going to score a hit no matter what he does.]

LATE orz
Then he gives the practice sword a wipe with some tissue paper before setting it back in its proper place, beaming at Sousei.]
That was a lot of fun. It's been so long back home since I got to practice against anyone properly, I feel like I've gotten a bit rusty, you know? It's good to get my blood pumping like this!
YOU'RE FINE
But so long, huh... he's from a little further along in the historical timeline, so he knows, he thinks, what Souji is talking about.
...]
Is it safe to do so here, then? [A sincere question--who knows how things work here. Maybe Souji is better. But...maybe not.]
no subject
Don't you start too. It's bad enough with Yamazaki-san watching my every move back home, and Hijikata-san telling me I should take it easy all the time.
[And here he has Horikawa hovering over him every time he's visiting the swords... It's not like he doesn't appreciate the concern, but he'd rather do without it.
He's back to smiling briskly in a moment or two, his tone light and carefree.]
Besides, I've been eating my medicine, and the doctors here say I'm not going to get any worse!
no subject
... You're not one of my men. Your well-being isn't my responsibility. [That's not to say that he won't keep an eye on Souji's health, but at least it's stealth-agreement that he won't mother hen like the others.]
If you are fine, that's all there is to it.
[for now]

I'm not planning on not taking care of myself. After the whole Christmas-thing I had to stay in bed for a week, and it was really boring.
[Being stuck in bed away from home was in no way better, just different. On one hand, it didn't drive home the feeling of uselessness quite so hard. On the other, it had just made him miss everyone more sorely.]
You know, you're definitely the kind of person... you can tell just from talking to you that you're used to command.
no subject
...I am, yes. I am the commander of the Yamainu.
[He picks up his sword and replaces it at his side properly, and then crosses his arms thoughtfully.]
We are a force dedicated to protecting Japan from threats. ...Somewhat after the Shinsengumi's time.
no subject
He exhales slowly as he hears them mentioned, forces himself not to ask exactly when that time ended, when they passed into history. He knows he doesn't really want to know.]
I can't say I'm surprised. [He tilts his head a bit, brushing his sweat-soaked fringe away from his face a bit. Can't help being curious.] What kind of threats?
no subject
But Souji is also the first to have actually...well, asked what sorts of threats. He supposes he shouldn't be surprised; Souji did his own protecting of their country, so naturally he'd still be concerned with it. But even so, Sousei can't exactly say "we protect the country from evil malevolent giant snake spirits and the like".
Yeah. Not that, quite yet. He doesn't miss a beat.]
From whatever may pose a threat to the citizens, truly. Civilians, especially. There is the police as well, naturally, but we handle greater threats that they cannot take care of.
[So sometimes serial killers, sometimes orochis, you know how it goes.]
no subject
A bit evasive, huh? That's alright. If you feel that there are some things you can tell me, I understand.
[He shrugs a pair of narrow shoulders lightly, a soft laugh leaving his lips.]
As long as the protection of civilians works, there are some things which are always best kept secret.
no subject
...Indeed. There are some things that are better left unknown unless necessary.
[He should know; while he had to know some of the things he does, he almost wishes he could go back to when he was blissfully ignorant of just how far their government had sunk.
But.
Well, there are things they have to learn and deal with as well.]
no subject
To tell the truth, I've never really been that well-informed when it comes to politics and secrets. I'm a captain, and the men under me trust me to make the right decisions and give the right orders in the field, but that's all the leadership I was ever made for.
[His tone is placid, calm; the voice of a man who is completely certain of his purpose in life, so centered within himself that you could use him as a gyroscope.]
It's not as if people ever bother to keep me out of meetings even if they're secret, but usually I'm there because Hijikata-san wants me around for something.
no subject
It's definitely been awhile since he's heard anything so certain.]
I would imagine Hijikata's judgment to be sound in those matters, at least. [He hasn't met the man himself, but he would suspect so.
One doesn't manage to run the Shinsengumi as long as that without being pretty damn savvy.]
Regardless, the Yamainu's purpose is to protect Japan. That much is true.
no subject
It's pretty often because he wants a backrub, though. [A small grimace.] Or sometimes because he wants me to play secretary. [His voice softens into something more serene, warm with admiration and trust.] Still, I trust his judgement as I trust nothing else, so I can't disagree.
[After that particular embarrassing little interlude, he'll simply beam brightly at Sousei.]
Your dedication to your cause does you credit - though it must be a bit difficult here, so far away from home. [He knows a lot about that.]
no subject
...Thank you. [The praise, as ever, takes him off-guard. They were secretive back home, and he'd never really intended to be a hero in the spotlight. Still, it isn't a bad thing to hear, especially not from someone who has to care for Japan just as much.]
It is aggravating, if nothing else. There are things that I have to do, and they are not being accomplished so long as we are here.
[Sigh...... it's hard when you're the dutiful sort and yet can't do your duty.]
It's ridiculous. There must have been better choices for this than you or me.
