01\\Novus/Replea (Evening, the 14th)
[ He finds his stool on the creaky side as he downs yet another cocktail—some bitter radioactive swill that does little but to dull his taste buds yet does wonders to chip away at his memories of the week before. Synthpop throbs in the background, bodies undulating on the dancefloor behind him, some of them with their minds all drugged up and floating freely into an alcohol-fueled ether.
It’s a shitty place that’s about as intimate and human as a robot’s chrome-plated bum and he hates it here; hates the noise and the drinks and the company (or his lack thereof), but the latter is precisely the reason why he’d chosen to come here instead of seeking out someplace smaller and cozier for a drink. Company feels a little weird when they’re likely going to tell you to stop drinking anyway (dammit Yang and Natalia).
So he’s drinking here and trying to man up a little, trying to smile. The latter’s easier with alcohol, of course. As the evening wears on and the music gets louder Koujaku gets some of his cheer back, to the point that he’s singing along (terribly) to whatever the deejay puts on and throwing his arm over the shoulders of whoever happens to be seated next to him. Be afraid. ]
02\\“Thistle Do Nicely” Flower Shop (Afternoon, the 15th)
[ He’s slept off as much of the hangover as he could this morning, but for the most part he’s peeled himself off of his bedroom floor, straightened his hair, and wandered out into the outside world whilst squinting at the light. The dark circles under his eyes and a persistent, throbbing headache made worse by catchy club tunes from the night before do little to alleviate his condition, but fuck it. He needs a walk.
He wanders the first mall he’s stepped into until he stops at a flower shop, only blearily recognizing some of the floral arrangements as the ones that might have appeared in Natalia’s winter bash not long ago. Huh. He could definitely use the company of flowers, in any case—he’s still reluctant to go into the CERES Gardens, after all, but strewing a few of these babies around his apartment might liven his place up, if not his mood outright.
He saunters down the aisles, examining the wares with interest before he stops at one flower in particular and has to catch a whiff of it. Alien or otherwise, this one isn’t anything he’s familiar with. ]
Wonder what these’re called.
03\\Shopping District (Basically the wildcard option; Daytime, the 16th)
[ One advertisement in particular catches his eye as he’s walking down the streets with you, either because one of you is on an errand and the other’s offered to help, or because you simply decided to walk together for no other reason than because you felt like it.
Koujaku isn’t very interested in shopping himself, nor is he intent on setting up his hairdressing business out on the streets like he normally would have done. He simply wants to disappear into the crowd for a little while, to drink in the bustle and noise of the place, because in a hopeful kind of way he’s seeing people still getting on with their lives despite the Flamines’ rudely cutting their previous ones short. And Koujaku knows all about abrupt endings, doesn’t he?
He stops at an advertisement playing out over one of the giant holographic screens—a trailer for some sappy romcom—and hey, at least movies came with proper endings.
He looks away from the screen as some lovey dovey pop song begins blaring out from the speakers, self-consciously scratching at the back of his neck as he does so. ]
Let’s move on. [ He shouldn’t be getting distracted right now, anyway.
Unless you’re Natalia, in which case you would’ve caught on already… ]
04\\Niteo (Wildcard Option the Second; Evening, the 16th)
[ Well someone’s sure in a better mood tonight. Maybe it’s the concert, maybe it’s the company, but Koujaku’s feeling all fired up and this time he hasn’t got any alcohol to blame it on. His suit’s neatly pressed and he’s still got his sword strapped to his back—presumably to make him look even more intimidating as a bouncer, if the tattoos don’t already help—but he’s perfectly comfortable in his uniform and perfectly at ease around practically everyone that comes inside.
Are you a fellow bouncer just starting out? Or maybe you’ve just started working this shift together? Maybe you’ve both been at it since forever?
Or maybe you’re one of the performers for tonight, and regardless of the audience’s reception to your act, Koujaku’s still got a kind word to toss your way. On the house.
Whichever the case, if you happen to be exiting the premises by then or are lingering nearby to pass the time or something (so long as you’re not causing any trouble or keeping the customers away), he’ll pretty much give you a wave from his post. ]
Yo! Good show tonight.

Then again, sometimes you run into somebody who just understands.
Koujaku beams at him, offering up a flushed smile and a tighter grip on his shoulder, because hey, they're all bros here, right? They're all one big
homohappy family… ]Shinpachi! [ He yells it a little too loudly in his excitement. ]
'S really great. Really great, seeing ya. Oi! [ He motions to the bartender. ]
Get this guy a drink, too! S'on me. He's a bro. He's like—He's like family…
no subject
Like family? [ It's pretty much going too far for people who haven't seen each other before all that much - it's probably why it comes with a grin. (He doesn't mind the bromo, though.) ] Oi, oi, a drink's fine, but don't end up spending all your money on more.
[ Since Shinpachi is a mooch, but a semi-responsible one. He would pull everything out of Sano's pockets, sure, but he'd feel worse doing it to Koujaku while he's like this. ]
no subject
Whatever this is. Just get drunk with him already Shinpachi the expense will be worth it. ]
'S my money anyway. 'Sides you—you desherve it. For bein' a bro. [ Herein he downs another frothing glass of beer. Ahh, the good life. ]
no subject
[ Especially not since Shinpachi both loves booze and is perpetually broke.. so someone else buying him his drinks fits in perfectly with those two things combined. He figures that a few drinks won't get Koujaku in huge trouble, anyway. And otherwise he'll just offer to help out later.
So when the drink is set down in front of him, Shinpachi grabs the glass and easily just swallows half of it in one go. What's taking it easy when drinking, Shinpachi doesn't know that sort of activity, nope siree.. ]
Man, you should've told me this is where you get your booze though! [ Gently elbowing Koujaku in the side. Which means that since Shinpachi's usual is way over the top, this is more a normal elbow poke - not enough to shove Koujaku out of his seat, as drink as he is. Hopefully. ] And here I was already wondering "geez, where does that Koujaku always go to get drunk, I never even see him around.." It was almost like you weren't a healthy normal guy!
[ Since apparently in Shinpachi's world view you're not normal until you get drunk off your ass at least once a week. ]
no subject
Get outta here. [ He snorts, attempting to down his entire drink in one go, but unlike Shinpachi he manages to get 3/4ths of the glass down. Most of it’s spilled past his lips, however, and dribbling most ungracefully into his kimono.
Welp, he tried, but what’s coordination? ]
The stuff here is shit. [ Who cares if the bartender’s within earshot? He’s not going to be dishonest to Shinpachi of all people. ]
This is—This is just the kinda place where you get lost, y’know? [ Okay, maybe he’s not being too clear about that. Bottom line is— ]
Where nobody’d see you around, and—and—and—stuff. [ That seems like a satisfactory enough explanation to him. Makes perfect sense, really. Getting all invisible in this joint when he could very well be nursing cheaper swill from one of the smaller taverns in the district. At least then the stench of illegality won’t seem quite so strong.
In Koujaku’s world you drink to your friends’ health—their livers notwithstanding—not to some drug deal gone smoothly. ]
no subject
Getting lost, huh.. Shinpachi keeps smiling, but the grin is a little more wry at this point. ]
Guess I can't say there's anything wrong with getting lost. [ Even if it's something Shinpachi wouldn't really do.. he's too open with all of this friends for it. But he gets that other people are different from him. ] But.. at least make sure to always come back after, yeah?
[ Maybe it's not the best idea to give Deep Advice to someone who's drooling booze down his kimono, but.. whatever, Shinpachi'd feel bad if he didn't at least say it. Koujaku's a better person than someone who deserves to die in some ditch of the road. ]
no subject
He tries his best to look serious, except that flush to his cheeks and that unsteady gaze is probably ruining the effect. ]
Sure, I will. [ He motions to the bartender for another glass. It’ll be another long night yet. ]
Just, y’know. Just…sometimes it ain’t that easy, y’know? Bein’ a hero. [ Being someone the guy you’re in love with always looked up to. Being put onto a pedestal of your own, because it kinda got you friendzoned and that’s just depressing all around. Or something. ]
no subject
[ Shinpachi sure doesn't view himself as a hero, he's just a regular guy who happens to be good with a sword thanks to years of training.. that's about it. But he's met people in these sort of places who seem to think he's great, almost like some sort of hero-- Koujaku included.
But hey, at least he won't bother to stop Koujaku's action of ordering another drink. He's not passed out yet, anyway. ]
I mean, it's just either something you are or aren't, right? A hero.
no subject
At least Shinpachi gets to be on a police force with some honor to it. ]
I guess so. [ But what is thinking when he’s slowly drowning his brain cells in alcohol. ]
But…it’s like. Like. What if they think you’re a hero when you’re not? What if they’re the hero instead?
[ Deep questions, man. ]
no subject
It reminds him of it instantly, but he tries to not think of it too much, instead focusing on Koujaku. ]
If someone thinks someone else is a hero, don't you think they usually have a good reason for it?
[ It helps though - it means he can see matters from the opposite perspective of Koujaku's own. ]
no subject
It’s hard, okay. ]
Well yeah, but… [ How does he explain that whole “genocide” thing… ]
Say, uh, say you did something pretty bad. Like real bad. You can’t—You can’t be a hero if you did anything that bad…
no subject
Define "bad". There's sometimes tough choices you gotta make where you have to do one thing bad so you can do good for another thing. [ Tell him about it, that's basically Shinpachi's life right there with his rigid ideals.. ]
And then there's people who do bad stuff without realising it, but try to make up for it later. I don't think I'd necessarily call either of 'em bad people or by principle not heroes, depending on the situation.
no subject
Yet Koujaku’s presently still wallowing rather pathetically underneath all that alcohol, and he can only grope for the words he’s sort of forgetting he means.
He clings to one. ]
I didn’t have a choice. [ His father made it for him, which was even worse. But in the end, his father hadn’t ever killed as much as Koujaku had that fateful day. ]
And—And if I don’t do something again, I might…might do it again. [ Goodness, he’s utterly graceless tonight. The bartender tops his glass off once more and down his courage goes. ]
no subject
Shinpachi raises his glass back to his lips, taking a gulp of the drink before he speaks up again. ]
I dunno, it sounds like there's an easy solution to that.
[ Easy to Shinpachi, anyway, as genuine and open as he is.. ]
Even heroes can ask for help sometimes, y'know. If you worry so much 'bout it, then why don't you just ask someone to lend you a hand? [ It's still hard for him to understand, but it's not like he hasn't seen behaviour like this before. Sano was exactly like this. ]
no subject
But congrats on now getting one though??Koujaku’s still peering into the bottom of his own glass for the answers, though his ears do perk up at that last bit. Damn, he doesn’t know what’s going on with Sano and honestly, all this shit should have been resolved months ago if CERES hadn’t kept on messing things up for him.
But he can’t keep talking to Natalia about his problems and…Shinpachi’s…a little closer to home. And, as it turns out, a little more understanding. ]
You…really think it could be that easy? [ Because man it bit him in the ass before. But he oh so wants to believe him regardless. ]
no subject
[ Even if there's still something a little hesitant about the way Koujaku words it, that hesitance doesn't seem to be present on Shinpachi's part at all. He just widely grins at the other, as if it really is all that easy - and it is, to him, anyway. What good are friends if you can't share problems with them, anyway? And since he doesn't even know if Koujaku has friends here from home to begin with, it's only natural to offer that sort of thing to decent people. ]
I mean, if you're lookin' for someone, I never mind lending a hand. We gotta stick together in crazy places like this, yeah? [ And Koujaku has already shown himself to be on top of that enough, considering the whole funhouse affair. ]
no subject
You’re…right. Gotta stick together. That’s it. [ His lower lip trembles in remembrance of how he’d tried to do just that before his friends from home went poof. And then came back with a German boytoy in tow.
And here he thought the funhouse was pretty bad. ]
Hey, Shin—Shin— [ Right too much effort to pronounce things ]
Thanks for—for having my back. Never got to tell you that. The back thing. Yeah.
no subject
How cute. So it's moments like these where it's really obvious who's the younger one here, huh? ]
No problem, man. [ About the having his back thing, yes, maybe also about not really getting his full name there, whatever.. ]
Just don't drive yourself nuts fretting 'bout it, that's all I'm asking in return.
no subject
Heh, I’ll try. [ Or he’ll try to remember to. But why worry about that now, indeed? Shinpachi’s put him in a much better mood and he’s back to climbing that wonderful alcoholic high. Clearly Shinpachi needs to climb Mount Shitface together with him, doesn’t he? Because Koujaku’s ordering them both another round of drinks and raising his own glass as a toast besides. ]
To heroes!
no subject
[ The drinking part. Not that Koujaku saying he'll try isn't great too - at least he'll be making an effort, that's what matters. And Shinpachi might try to keep an eye out for the other as well, just to make sure he's doing well. Especially since Koujaku's such a good kid.
Picking up his own glass, he raises it before (lightly, instead of breaking their glasses..) knocking it against Koujaku's. ]
To heroes..!
[ There's still a long night ahead to get shitfaced during, after all. ]
