[ The loud crash of a body hitting branches and muffled gasps of air are the first thing that draws Gou's attention. Even though the jungle is loud - people crashing through the brush, yelling, screaming; even the animals are kicking up a fuss - she's sitting right under the tree. It's unavoidable. Her attention is drawn up and up and up, until she spots the figure.

There's really nothing dignified about hanging from a branch but Gou has seen Rei in even less dignified situations, so really, this is nothing. It's also a nice distraction from the vague throbbing in her ankle.

It even makes her crack a smile. ]

It is, honestly, a question Rei has been asking a lot, lately, though not specifically aimed at her. (Her judgment is usually sound, except for a tangential interest or two, and his tendency is usually deference, but as they say about desperate times...). This universe, whether parallel, alternate, completely made up, or even wholly virtual--in which case he should be severely struggling with his sense of self inside someone else's head, seems to not simply have it out for him, but abjectly revel in his embarrassment.

For instance, why, of all people to find him in this state, did it have to be a friend, and moreover one whom he respects and looks to for leadership (especially when that end of things seems to have fallen so easily apart)? Why could it have not been a stranger who might have laughed but wouldn't have remembered the incident long after parting? Who had no name to associate with such an unfortunate, embarrassing fate?

And why does this embarrassment always have to do with falling flat on his dignity? Face. Falling flat on his face?]

[Theoreitically, yes, he would swing, or even shimmy, his way over to the tree's massive trunk and then slowly inch himself down, safely and with whatever remaining dignity he still has completely intact. But, if he were to consult his horeiscope today, he might also find a small, helpful section emphasizing caution, reistraint, and maybe: "luck is not on your side today."

He doesn't even make it through the explanation of his plan, let alone trying it out. The branch he's fallen on, high up and thinner than the older, thicker branches below, had fractured in the initial fall and the strain of Rei's weight eventually proves too much.
