If Armin is surprised that someone who isn't very big themselves can pick him up so easily it doesn't show. Then again, his squad captain is in fact three cm shorter and considered to officially be Humanity's Strongest weapon. It's not so difficult to believe that someone powerful like this man might be similar in that way.

It is still embarrassing, however. Armin grips hold of what fabric he can get hold of and closes his eyes, a little dizzy. So, vampires can also run very quickly...

"Is it usually far?"

Are you in a hurry? [That's funny. But at least she's close, if that's the case!

The follow up question he takes more seriously, however.]

I didn't want to be helpless anymore. Mm, what's your name?

[She knows his after all, it's only fair.]

[Armin is more than used to nosy, crass people, but he's certainly not sorry to see someone minding their own nose for once. He feels backed far enough into a corner as it is, it's nice to have just a little less pressure in this particular interaction.]

Due to the climate control, do you think? I guess someone could regulate the city's care taking too in that case, is that right?

Rapunzel. [ His is a good question too; she's impressed (she hadn't realised the absence of introduction at all - and she usually picks up on everything like that) and rewards him with a grin. ] What made you think you were helpless?

[Oh! A name he can actually pronounce! That's the first he's heard here. It's an odd sort of relief.

He digs a toe into the muck at their feet anyway, not sure how to explain the feeling of being prey to someone else. What's more, it was always that way for Armin. Even before he'd ever faced down a single titan, he'd seen dozens of bullies rain down kicks and punches and spit and insults.

But how best to get all of that across? Armin considers his answer carefully.]

My friends were brave naturally. I'm still trying to learn how to be. Where are you from?

[ Ah, he'd make a good chess player, she imagines. This time, however, she'll hide her smile by turning away to watch one of the more dangerous looking frogs as it attempts climbing a tree. ]

Has it worked? Have you gotten more brave?

It's great! I've always thought he had good leadership potential, just needs experience and such...

Similar, yet still on a different level entirely--Mika's not even moving as quickly as he could, but it's still a pace a human would have difficulty matching. For that matter, while Mika is a cut above the average run of the mill vampire, his power pales in comparison to that of the nobles'.

"How should I know?" Mika's just as new to this as Armin is, after all.

[Fear doesn't seem to be something one can train away so far in Armin's experience. Having the training to react at least is much better than not, though.

It's no surprise either to hear that the name of the place she comes from is unfamiliar. That's what he was expecting, really. Aren't they all from kingdoms that are unknown to one another around here?]

So, what were you waiting for?

[And that, frankly, is not fair. But it's the only question she's dodged so far, which makes it the most interesting one.]

yeah if he lives to adulthood he'll be doing something interesting for sure!

That's true, it's a stupid question. Armin isn't in the habit of asking stupid questions, so it shuts him up quickly to have it pointed out to him. He'd gotten so used to being in over his head, but this is a whole different...reality, and sometimes lack thereof.

He quiets down, deciding he'll learn best if he stops interrupting.

[ zero looks up at the kid this time, faceplate blank and showing nothing. this is information that they will not share. after a pause, they raise their hands in a shrug. ]

Some things buried are not meant to be unearthed by any explorer.

[He was afraid of that. Armin stares down at his boots again, mortified. To be carried back to safety by captain Levi is an enormous waste, but the captain isn't wrong. He's not going to have an easy time getting back alone.]

Definitely. He's such a great character all-around really (not that I'm biased at all..... XD)

Mika doesn't mind the break from talking, it lets him focus a bit more on watching where he's going. Even with keener senses than a human, navigating a swamp is tricky business, especially moving as quickly as he is now. That, and it lets him ignore the question of just why he decided to help this guy he only just met and isn't even sure yet whether he can trust him.

Or maybe that's just it in and of itself; as far as Mika can tell, Armin is just an ordinary human, with no access to the kinds of demonic weapons and devices the Imperial Demon Army uses. Certainly he'd looked plenty helpless when in that monster's grasp, not to mention terrified when he learned what Mika is. Which, as Mika's thoughts drift in that direction despite himself...

"... Normally, I only need a small amount of blood at a time," he says, answering an unspoken question from earlier. It doesn't mean he couldn't easily drink someone dry, of course, and many vampires routinely did just that, but Mika isn't inclined to just wantonly kill people.

[Oh. That name...it's difficult, to Armin. He glances up again, uncertainly. The world at home was so small. It was almost impossible to come across unknown things aside from on the battlefield. He's a little nervous to repeat it, in case he screws it up. Better to try, though, and make the mistake early if he must.]

Tah-dah-shee?

[The potion is a different matter. Armin fidgets a little, wanting but not sure that he ought to trust it. Regardless if it helps or not, accepting it or refusing it means something in this situation. More than the ability to trust a stranger, or the wisdom to mistrust.

If there's anything that Armin has learned in his military career, it's that absolutely no one should be trusted, but there's the desire to trust everyone. He'd like to believe it might be different here if they're all meant to be on the same side, but he doubts that. He glances up, seeking out the older man's eyes. If it's a lie, it could easily be a very good one, but Armin wants to trust him. He doesn't have anyone here to believe in yet, after all.]

[ Time won't have changed her intentions there; her dodge is more subtle this time, but it's still a dodge. ]

When was I waiting for something? Does that count as my question for you also? Does that?

That admission is a surprise, but... reassuring. Armin tucks that knowledge away and also the volunteering of it for later. It seems almost like a kind gesture, again. What the man says doesn't always match up with his actions. There must be a reason for that. Perhaps where he's from vampires aren't very well received. That hardly takes a stretch of the imagination. Armin puzzles it over for a while before he breaks the silence again.

"So, hunting isn't always necessary?"

[It was worth a shot, though Armin laughs in surprise at the playful questioning about the questions. He covers his mouth afterward, surprised himself at the outburst. It's unusual for someone to make him laugh. Even with Eren, it's a rarity. But...it's nice. Even if she's clearly dodging his questions.]

I guess those can cancel out.

I somehow knew I'd like him from the moment I heard the kid screaming "heretic!" at him..... XD

Hunting. That's an interesting way to put it, and not something Mika's cared to think about before. Though now that it's been brought up, however, it makes an unfortunate amount of sense. Before the virus wiped out most of mankind and the vampires made the remaining human children into their 'livestock', they probably did hunt in some way or another.

Which doesn't do anything to reduce the strangeness of thinking of those terms applied to himself, of course.

"It's not," he says.

[ Likewise, she's finding it shockingly easy to answer and generate questions without any reserve or fear. What's the worst that could happen? She makes a fool of herself? Probably that's already happened; he must think she's some kind of crazed, sloppy, strange-looking wild child. ]

Well. Since that answers the last. Wanna answer the first one anyway?

[ ah... perhaps this guy isn't used to names like that. ]

Tadashi, yeah. I got you, don't worry.

[ that's... that's all he says. he'd really rather not inconvenience armin any further but he does look at him expectantly. ]

it's always the quiet ones

Being considered prey is nothing new to Armin, so it's the natural way to identify the situation. He's unaware, upside down and backward as he happens to be at the moment that he's said something so disconcerting to Mika.

Rather, he's relieved to hear the response. It's more of a confirmation than surprise at this point, honestly. If Mika happens to be a monster, then that's how it is, a happenstance. Certainly, it isn't because that's the essence of Mika himself. If it is, Armin has seen absolutely nothing to suggest it so far.

He finds himself relaxing, even in a situation like this and during such an awful conversation. "Then I'm sorry about before."

When you had all the time in the world.

[That's all he knows of the answer to that. He wonders what it must feel like to wait for something, more than a few minutes, a few hours, a few days. His own life has been such a whirlwind that the longest wait he can think of is waiting to be rescued when acting as a decoy.

He wants to ask what the most beautiful thing in Corona was, or if she's ever killed a man with a tangle -only that won't be funny if the answer is somehow yes. He wants to ask what her favorite food is, because people here seem to have quite a lot of foods he's never even dreamed of.

Instead what comes out isn't even a question.]

That sounds lonely.

[The wording sounds a bit strange and unfamiliar, but the sentiment behind it gives Armin a warm feeling in his stomach. That's what a friend says when they give you a boost up an apple tree, and even coming from a stranger it's oddly reassuring.

It might be a mistake, but Armin only debates a few moments longer before he reaches out and hesitantly accepts the potion.]

Thank you. I won't let you down.

[He hopes he won't, at any rate. If this man is willing to spare supplies on him, then he'd better do his best to use them well.]

[ And what she feels in response isn't even an emotion.

No, her reaction is more visceral: a cringe that starts in her face as she draws shoulders up, wincing, and recoils, bending over her stomach as if to protect it - and her - from any further harm. Any more painful truths. Loneliness of the kind she's lived isn't something you look at head on; you paint it, smile through it, dance around it. Kill the dark with sunshine.

Even if some sources of light need rest every once in awhile.

Rapunzel smiles and shakes her head, kicking a foot out in front of her and wiggling the toes absently. ] Some people would love to have all the time in the world... [ Her mother, for one. ] Many people probably. Time is... precious. Time is... is life.
