[ That's a surprisingly agreeable response. IV nearly clicks his tongue, but decides on something more sophisticated instead as he takes Shuu's answer for an invitation to a meaningful conversation – if it can amount to that. ]

Nothing's wrong with a little celebration. It's when you keep on celebrating without a thought for what's going on that it becomes a problem.

[ IV doesn't mind the occasional excitement. But even he starts to feel off if all he does is fool around and not do something about their situation. ]

Are you saying here people think about what's going on at all?

[ Yeah, he's still bitter. No matter whether he's his usual catty self or a little more oddly subdued like this, Shuu will forever be bitter, it's his thing. And the stuff he's seen in this place just hasn't impressed him, even if he doesn't really help things along with his usual attitude at any other time. ]

Even when weird stuff like this happens, they just say "oh well" and start celebrating weird love days or something again. [ Valentine's Day wasn't exactly a thing in Sengoku times, okay. ] What kind of useless attitude is that? If they don't care whether they die or not, then why don't they just hurry up and die?

[ .. okay, so he's still harsh. ]

[ Disbelieving of what he's hearing – or perhaps not, because this is a demon he's listening to – all IV manages is an unimpressed huff. He can feel the bitterness rolling off of the other in droves. If Shuu weren't so naive in IV's opinion, he might have been offended by the statement that they should all meet their demise and be over with it. ]

Is that what you think? Then you really don't understand humans at all.

It's true that there are people who may think that way, but there are those of us who celebrate to keep our spirits up. What's the use in fixating on things that cause pain? That's no way to live.

[ Fixating on things that cause pain being no way to live?? You have to be kidding him, isn't that the only way to live.. Or it's the way Shuu's been living, anyway. It's partially just because of his surroundings, but it's made him unable to focus on anything but his negative feelings half of the time. ]

You must be a lucky guy to be able to think like that!

[ His voice perks up all of a sudden, but it's more fake than anything else. And obviously so, on top of it - there's a bitterness about the statement that's really hard to miss.

Yeah, that's more like the usual Shuu. Except this time it's more like a defensive mechanism kicking in instinctively. ]

[ IV hears his old friend knocking. Bitterness is as familiar to him as the back of his hand, so much so that Shuu's annoying tone doesn't rile him up as much as it could have. Is this what he would have sounded like if he'd talked to a mirror less than a year ago? ]

I wasn't lucky. That's why I can think like that now.

[ And with this, he thinks he suddenly understands this juvenile demon more. There's a great deal he still doesn't know, but he knows a fake act like that when he sees one. He owned that charade before. ]

[ There's a part of Shuu that's at least mature enough to understand what the other means.

He's saying he understands. That he knows what it's like, because he wouldn't say it's no way to live if he didn't know just how much it sucks to live that way--

But acknowledging that other people have feelings too is hard. Especially when acknowledging your own feelings is already hard enough, so of course Shuu is just going to be obstinate about it - it's the only thing he knows how to do. ]

If you were a really unlucky guy, you still wouldn't be able to say those things.. don't you think?

[ He giggles, but still just as fake. ]

Although being stuck here with these weird kids makes you pretty unlucky too, I suppose!

[ IV scowls at the mention of the children. He doesn't dare to turn around as he goes on ignoring the accusatory droning behind them. If he focuses on this obnoxious faking, he can pretend they're not there. ]

That's why I said I wasn't. Things have been different since I realized that they don't have to stay broken. Who knows? You might benefit from it, too.
