for rei.
It just seems hard to believe that they were already here when I was told my planet was recently destroyed. It seems like I was lied to.
[ Yu leans back in his seat, drumming his fingers on his cup. ]
You should know something. Yosuke is here.
no subject
I'm aware he's here. I can feel his presence. And...you should be very aware that you were lied to.
[Her fingers click on the sides of her cup and she sniffs.]
Unless you honestly believe that alien invaders came and destroyed your home in an instant and you were completely powerless to fight back.
no subject
I'd planned to discover the truth for myself.
[ He wasn't sure what to believe. Did he think CERES was telling him the truth? Not necessarily. But there was no alternative story, either, until he had a chance to investigate. He still doesn't know what the possible other answers are, either. ]
no subject
[Her own fingers tighten a bit and she picks up the cup, taking a sip.]
I've personally infiltrated their facility. And I've been here long enough to know a bit more than most.
First and foremost? There's no mention in any of the records that CERES has, both in their private and public sections, on the Flamines.
no subject
But the information she has to offer is more interesting. Yu sits up a little straighter, his expression of incredulity doing half the talking for him. ]
Our supposed enemies.
[ A beat. ]
This could mean a few things. Either our worlds are safe and the footage we see is fabricated, or if they are being destroyed, it's CERES doing it. It's probably the former... [ He muses aloud. But then he shakes his head. ] But why?
no subject
I can't begin to imagine their motives. They haven't asked anything of us, and they've not really even been openly cruel. They don't lock us up, and they largely seem content with keeping us mollified when if they had more sinister designs imprisonment would be easier.
no subject
[ He sure seems to think they've got a more sinister plan. But it would make sense, right? Why go to all this expense, after all, why try so hard to bring so many people from so many different places here at what must surely be such great cost if not for a very good reason? CERES must get something out of it. Something very important. No one would do this without some kind of benefit. And it doesn't seem to be for their own good, either, or why lie about the Flamines?
Yu shakes his head. ]
There's only one way to get more answers.
[ And it isn't an easy way, for sure. Not on top of the raids and infiltrations that have already taken place. ]
no subject
[Rei lays her palms flat on the table and looks right at Yu, eyes focused and hard. What she has to say is something she hates, something she fully expects anyone in their right mind to hate. It's hard enough, really, just being here day to day.]
We have to be patient and wait, figure out opportunities and seize them, and keep one another apprised of what's going on. There's a lot I should tell you while I have you here, and I know it may be hard to take in, but at least some of it will be familiar.
Spirits, for instance, and the flood. I...can get you a note pad if you'd like.
no subject
Do you really have one...?
[ He wouldn't say no. He's got a pretty good memory, but if this gets really detailed, it wouldn't hurt to have the ability to write this down on something other than his CERES-issued device. ]
no subject
[She slides it out, tears out a few pages and offers him a pencil.]
Always be prepared. Anyway.
This world has four spirits, as far as we know. Maris is the spirit of Water, Caeli of Air, and Ardeo of Fire. I have not yet come across the name of the Earth spirit. But Maris caused the flood damage you see around the colony.
[Her fingers curl up, eyes flashing.]
CERES was holding another spirit captive, they told us after they arrived.
no subject
Captive?
[ He lifts his eyes. ]
How do you hold a spirit captive? No - that's not what's important. Which one? And you said was. Is that spirit free now?
no subject
[A beat.]
And yes, it is free. It was not one of the four elements, but another. One they called the Bridge. Female, according to them. One of the groups involved in the raid managed to rescue her.
[And she doesn't know Yu well enough to open up about Mosley's involvement. Not yet. ]
Maris and Caeli took her with them as that group left. I was not with them, though. I don't have firsthand knowledge of her looks or anything.
no subject
I want to know more about the Bridge and the raid, if you can tell me. If she's not an elemental spirit, what is she? And what was the raid for?
aaand notifs went down. I'm sorry. I'll just have to focus on this tomorrow.
[A beat.]
And the raid itself was bad. We were separated early on. Three groups. One found a bunch of machines, but I don't have an accurate description of what they did. One found the bridge, and my own found five ghosts bound in cages. I freed them, and we made our escape.
Only...five of the six of us died, along the way.
[A sore point to be sure.]
they are. so down. i checked this on a hunch. no worries.
The fact that he actually drops his pencil out of shock should say it all, though his eyes also widen marginally. He's never been prone to huge reactions except on very rare occasions. This isn't one of them. But he still looks horrified, if only in an understated way. Somewhat hushed: ]
You were the only survivor?
no subject
[It's a simple word, and the look...the tone he takes...it surprises her. It was more of a reaction than she'd seen so far.]
I was. But...that was a few days ago. The other people? They're alive. They returned. It's...really unsettling, I know but death isn't permanent here. You can die, and you're returned to life a few days later. They are all alright. Unhappy, unnerved, but...alright.
no subject
Yu leans back in his seat, pressing a hand over his mouth and taking a moment to breathe in slow and collect his thoughts. It's hardly bad news to hear. He'd certainly rather all those people be alive than the alternative. But it's unsettling in a fundamental way, to know that death is unreal here. He wonders what Yosuke will think.
Finally he nods and sits up straight again. ]
I'm glad to hear they're alright.
[ He'll take up his pencil again and jot down a few more notes, trying to recollect his thoughts after news of that magnitude. ]
Was there anything to learn from the ghosts?
no subject
Nothing from them specifically, they didn't speak beyond a 'thank you' but they were upset at CERES. Furious, even. The room had been built to keep them in, that much was obvious. You don't make a place like that without a very specific purpose. And they were definitely prisoners, behind bars and all.
