how would rei deal with any of it? he reacts to the mildest stimuli in the extreme.
well. rin's made himself a vessel of protection. rei has ways of corralling haru to which even makoto has no access; at least there's that.
plus, rin had missed him. selfish or otherwise, having another friend to shield him from his own fractured thoughts is a boon. ]
Yeah. Him and Haru have been here a couple of months longer than I have.
[ speaking of...
well, it's not the right time to fill rei in, and he probably shouldn't break makoto's confidence, all things considered.
still, it's a temptation that's difficult to resist. ]
They're kind of... weird. Around each other, I mean. Some shit happened before I got here, and they're still figuring their shit out. Don't let it get to you.
[ it's all the explanation rin can give. he starts leading the way back to the apartment. ]

Here. And so it seems that in changing everything about the world around them, it's started to change them as well. Logical, perhaps, on a psychological level, but the point doesn't sit well with him.
He'll question it later, when he has a better idea. Right now, it's idle gossip, and not an attractive point to push. Though he does note, with no small amount of bitterness, that at least this isn't his first acquaintance with the loop he's--once again--left outside of.]
A couple months?
[That's the part that stands out the most, regardless of Haruka and Makoto's reported dramatics; it's just one more thing that makes absolutely no sense. It's difficult enough to swallow aliens and this nonsense about source code and some faceless corporation's savior complex, but--]
We'd have noticed if you'd gone missing!
[You know, back home. Where time isn't thrown to the wind as much as every other irrefutable law of the universe he's ever known.
This is never going to get easier to swallow.]

fun. and now rei gets to relive all of that. ]
Yeah, something about time distortion. Don't try to wrap your head around it -- I don't think we have the science to explain half the crap that goes on around here.
[ but that's not the most important part. rin sobers, slumping forward as he walks. it would have been easier if rei had heard all of this from makoto, maybe. or maybe not - rei did come to him when he wanted help with his swimming. rei does see him as an authority figure - on some level, at least.
it's a heartening thought. rin's spent so much time in tellus reflecting on how to wring utility value from the meager skills his easy life has offered him: his ego has taken more than a few hits.
his smile is wry when he directs it back towards rei. ]
General consensus is that the Flamine threat is some kind of front for whatever CERES is trying to do. Our world's still out there somewhere.
[ and we'll get back there, come hell or high water, says the all-too-familiar glint in rin's eye. ]
