[ Styx pauses for a moment. ]

Okay, I know I'm being unfair, but- c'mon, you've gotta give me something more to work with, here. That was a hell of a first impression, and I don't mean that in a good way.

I'm all about first impressions! Good and bad!

[However, being the social savvy guy that he was... Hiro couldn't just simply leave things at that.]

So why don't we hang out and get to know each other a bit? Jungle adventures make for the best friendship building experiences.

[ IS. IS THIS GUY FOR REAL. ]

What? No! HELL no! There's nothing adventurous about being in a jungle! And the last time I did "friendship building exercises" with someone, we killed, like, dozens of guys between us!

[ A beat. ]

Which was certainly enjoyable, but that's not the goddamned point!

Dude! Do not not watch the military jungle adventure movies? This is where all kinds of camaraderie is built between people.

[AH WELL. That was certainly an eyeopener, yet Hiro doesn't flinch in the slightest.]

Um... I've killed tons of demons and aliens with my friends if that helps? Can't say that I did it for the sport, buuuut it had some fun moments.

The hell's a movie?

[ OKAY, well, speaking of eye-openers. Or maybe just half-lidded-unbelieving-stare-ers. ]

Demons and aliens. Y'know that fib would be more believable if you'd just stuck with one or the other, right?

It's like a TV except it's on a bigger screen. Much better quality too.

[Hiro looks at him completely blankly and speaks without any humor in his voice. Thought that might have made it even more difficult to believe if he was lying or not.]

No, no... I'm serious. I definitely fought stuff like that. Nearly died a lot of times too.

Oh, yeah, REAL helpful explanation there. Thanks for nothing.

[ Styx rolls his eyes. He sure as hell isn't blinking first!! ]

Uh-huh. Well, unless you're in the business of pulling anti-demon swords out your ass, I can't see how you beat 'em up. What, you run into them with your face until they give up?

You're welcome. Nothing comes for free, so I'll accept no charge. [This sassy bitch.] However, I canshow you one once we get outta of this jungle.

[Anti-demon swords? That sounded like a video game he used to play. Hiro's lips curl up in some amusement.]

I had to whatever I could. Pipes, my bookbag or even my fists if I wanted to survive. Otherwise, I summoned other demons or used magical spells to up the ante a little. [He couldn't call himself a magician or a professional summoner...]

Oh, you sassy little-

[ What brain-to-mouth filter? Styx trails off, peering down at him with no small amount of suspicion. ]

What, so you're some... pugilist-mage-summoner? I can hardly contain my skepticism.

Your best friends must call you Skepty!

[So that's going to be his nickname in Hiro's head. He was perfectly aware of how weird and unimpressive this looked and sounded in theory, but he continues talking...]

Well, I couldn't myself a professional since it's not a job! I'm just an expert at surviving world ending events and stuff... So let's just stick with "veteran survivor" for now.

Yeah, anyone who calls me THAT ain't gonna stay my best friend for long, lemme tell you that.

[ Styx snorts at that next bit, though. ]

Right. "Survivor." So how long you been in the survival business, huh? A few years? A few decades?

Gotta come up with other adoring names then!

[And that was a good question. Hiro's been through two worlds of experiences, yet all in all...]

Two weeks! A week in one world and a week in another. Doesn't sound long, but it still built a lot of character for me.

[Sure, he's been through some sad and painful experiences... But Hiro felt like they turned him into a better person. It wasn't all doom and gloom as he's had plenty of happy things given back to him in return.]

Right. You go do that.

[ Styx shakes his head, looking (and sounding) not at all impressed. ]

Two weeks, huh? Get back to me after you've amassed a hundred years' worth of experience, kid.

Survival's survival. Doesn't meant how long or short you've gone through painful experiences.

[He flashes him a smirk, but it's a little different from his regular ones. There's some weight behind it.]

It's not like it's a contest. But hey... It gets easier when you think of it like a fun game.

Uh-huh. Well, you COULD see it all as a fun game, but you either end up stronger than steel, or stark raving mad.

[ He sizes up the human again. ]

Or maybe a little of both.

I think I'm on both ends of the scale! After all... You can't be a hero without being a little mad.

[Something loosely based off what a friend told him. Regardless of what others thought of him, he did what he felt was right and fun for him.]

Alright, look, I gotta ask- does EVERYONE around here want to be a hero or something? 'Cause between you and that Little Red Riding Hood, you've already got the market cornered in this damn place.

What's wrong with being a hero? It's a fun thing to do. Being a bad guy can be fun too, but there aren't that many benefits to go along with it.

[He was flexible enough to understand why people did bad or screwed up things, but it didn't meant that he had to like it.] Anyway... What'cha got against it? Why do you wanna be a bad guy?

Nothing's wrong with being a hero, but it's not a job description! Everyone here makes it sound like some sorta full-time profession!

[ Styx shakes his head. Man, if only this kid knew. ]

Besides, I never said I wanted to be a "bad guy." It just ain't that simple, that's all I'm sayin'.

Oh... Is that all? Well, you've got a point. I've definitely made choices that I've got some regrets about and I'm not entirely proud of. Nothing in this world is easy.

[He'll just casually shrug his shoulders.]

It's the people who think that the hero gig is all black and white that end up being complete morons and burn themselves out, anyway~ ♪

Right. Guess you're not nearly half as dumb as you look. So you pick that all up along the way, or did you figure that out on your own before that thing with the demons?

[ Which he still doubts actually happened, but that's neither here nor there. ]

Maybe I am, maybe I'm not. ♥

[There's a sly little smile when he says that. Hiro certainly did want people to think that he was dumb and weird.]

Along the way, actually! Two of my friends ended up being good examples for that. One of them is all about friendship and justice, but he took his heroism too far and became a monster in his pursuit of getting revenge. That narrow mindedness of his nearly got a few of my pals killed... So I spoke and punched some sense into him to make see things differently.

And as for the other one... Well, he had some good ideas and wanted to help humanity... But he sucked at empathizing with people and did some cruel things that made him distant and difficult to get along with. He was a different kind of monster, but the same song and dance went for him too. They became better people in the end, thankfully.

[Yamato and Ronaldo were both troublesome guys... They were on different ends of the scale, yet they were so alike in plenty of ways. Having a balance between being heartfelt and goal-orientated were two things that Hiro learned from them.]

[ Well, Hiro's certainly succeeding in that aim. Still, Styx listens with- well, not rapt attention, but closer to mild interest than anything. ]

I knew someone like that first guy. Less about friendship and justice and more about the revenge angle, though. He was also a berserker. We talked a little about that whole "let's not get your friends killed" thing, but I didn't survive a hundred years by arguing with someone who can break fully armored knights over one knee, you know?

Still. One punch fits all, huh?

Ameeeen to that my big nosed brotha! If you're too passive, then no one will listen. But if you're too assertive, then you'll just scare people away.

[He didn't seriously mean anything with the big nosed quip. It was just Hiro's way of poking fun. Can't stop his sass train when it starts rolling! It felt like there was more Styx than he thought... At least, he didn't have to label him as 'bad guy' and keep an eye on him.]

Still... Sounds like your friend is a badass customer! I wouldn't mind sparing with him for a little entertainment! I'm tougher than I look, y'know.

[The jury was out on if Hiro was seriously considering this or just joking. Well, Daichi of all people knew that Hiro did some crazy things whenever he was bored... And that didn't change even during an Apocalypse. Pulling pranks on people, getting "experience points" by hunting and killing stray demons, socializing with people even while the world was collapsing... The list was looong.]

[ Styx snorts. He's been called worse, but that's not what he's hung up on, anyway- ]

I'm no one's brother, pal.

[ Still, there's not a whole lot of heat behind his words, and he keeps on going. ]

And you've never actually seen an orc in your life, have you.
