[ She nods, but her voice grows softer, quieter. ]

There's nothing they can do to me that's worse than what I've seen before this. So...there's that.

[A little bout of silence follows, where most people would probably be wondering what sort of life she's come from to say something like that so certainly.

But in the end, Kaoru has no curiosity to voice, and simply nods.]

With luck, that will see you through. If nothing else, you can go into that city understanding that they aren't kind despite what they would like for us to think.

Yeah. [ As dismal as it is to believe. Though she's heard even humans only trust their leaders so much, so she doesn't feel bat at all for being suspicious. ]

What is it like, the city?

[That sure is The Truth... As for the question, Kaoru pauses to quietly consider.]

It's... large, bustling. Very - I believe the word is "high-tech"?

[saudadist]

[ So a typical big city, as far as she can figure. Doesn't sound too out of the norm, but she's not going to let herself get complacent with that idea. The moment she does, it'll turn out the place has like...flying cars or something silly. ]

Sounds about right...

I believe it's been compared to the twenty-first century and beyond, if that helps at all.

[Being from the nineteenth century put Kaoru at a definite disadvantage at first, even taking flying cars and robots out of the equation. Microwaves? Working lights and running water??]

[ Huh, not so futuristic as she's been thinking, at least. ]

About what I'm used to, then. I see.

There are, of course, a few advancements that stand out. We ourselves could technically be considered as such, I suppose.

[ The implication he carries sours her mood even more than before. Are they not real? Robots? That can't be right, she can feel, hear, see, everything! ]

What are you talking about?

Ah... In the power point upon arrival, surely they mentioned the Nexus Code, yes? That they rescue us from this code - that they pull our code into the city from there. Though we are certainly real, they would have us believe that our true bodies were likely destroyed. In that sense, we are every bit as much a technological advancement as our surroundings.

[It's still a little beyond Kaoru's understanding despite being around for so long, but at least the explanation's gotten easier to give over the months.]

[saudadist]

[ Code? They're all code? Like in computers or something like that? Though her gaze no longer falls on him, confusion muddles her face as she glares holes into the grass a few steps ahead. ]

...unbelievable.

[ So, she's real, but based on a "true body" elsewhere? Then what happened to her true body? She consoles herself with the knowledge that whatever they've done to it, it can't be any worse than what happened to it before she showed up here. Thinking about it unsettles her stomach, so she doesn't let herself dwell on it for too long. ]
