Who: Vincent Nightray (
ofmisfortune) & Kaoru Nagumo (
souredsweet)
When: During the intro mingle
Where: Business + Housing districts
What: Gross shitheads being gross shitheads while trying to pretend they aren't gross shitheads
Rating/Warning: PG13, will change if needed!
[Except no, no murder here, only fine upstanding members of society!!
Kaoru's gone about the rest of the day like usual after combing through the new arrivals, greeting a fair share out of bored and lukewarm curiosity more than anything else. The one person that's actually important is already in the city and Kaoru couldn't care less who else might arrive. ...Well, a not-quite-ancestor showing up had definitely been an unpleasant surprise, Shuu, but that's less actual care and more an overwhelming feeling of wanting to murder whoever had been responsible for it. And maybe Shuu, too.
The mindless store work is enough to allow Kaoru room and time to simmer down, at least. A good thing, since being in possession of an easily-riled temper can make it hard to act in accordance with an outward persona at times, and Kaoru very much needs that act today. It was also boredom that drove Kaoru to accept Vincent's request, quietly intrigued by someone so friendly in the face of the overwhelming situation at hand. It's a way to whittle time, if nothing else, and to continue building up a solidly positive reputation. People are more likely to defend the character of those in their good graces, after all.
So!! Whenever Vincent meanders over, Kaoru will either be finishing shutting down the store or already sitting on a bench outside. If it's the latter, an elegant-looking box is being held carefully, but Kaoru's attention seems to be caught by the people wandering up and down the sidewalk for the time being.]

Particularly for the benefit of his evening company, Vincent bathed and preened before setting out to the suggested meeting location, so it wouldn't be until Kaoru was seated outside that he would find the other.
Hand gliding along the bench's back, the blond rounded to take a seat beside him. ]
Good evening, Miss Nagumo. I hope I haven't kept you waiting too long.
no subject
You haven't; please don't be concerned. [Kaoru shifts a little to be able to look at Vincent more fully rather than from the side, then offering a brief but polite nod. There's a little upward lilt of curiosity in the next question.]
Were you able to find the person that you were searching for?
no subject
Regrettably, I did not. [ His mismatched eyes lower to set on Kaoru's hands, of which he places one of his own upon. ] It's with good fortune that I had good company to look forward to, regardless.
no subject
Even so, I hope that you may be able to see him again soon... [Because regardless of whether or not that spiel about homes being destroyed is true, Kaoru assumes that pretty much everyone would prefer for their loved ones to be stuck with them. Easier to keep an eye on.
Both hands shift, then, turning palm-up so that Kaoru can gently hold Vincent's in a gesture that toes the line between reassurance and concern.]
It can be difficult, spending too much time away from those you know.
no subject
There are a few others here, whom I am familiar with, but I can't say that circumstances would ever allow for trust between us - or anything like it. [ A careless shake of the head, and Vincent breathes a laugh. ] It might not seem like much, but my master's ambitions were my only sense of purpose. That's why I need him.
[ That's what he tells himself, at the very least. ]
no subject
I can't say that I understand it entirely, but he must mean a great deal to you in that case. I would hope that you may be able to find a new ambition to sustain you here, but such a task isn't so easily accomplished...
[Carefully crafted notes of sympathy and gentle upset are woven into Kaoru's tone, artfully presented with pursed lips and a little additional shoulder tension.]
no subject
Mm. My prerogatives simply differ from theirs; I wouldn't deem it unfortunate.
[ Making enemies never bothered him, and that isn't about to change anytime soon. He'll always do whatever it takes to protect the people he cares for most.
The smile he wears extends to his tired eyes, as he wraps his fingers more securely into Kaoru's hold. A small show of reassurance, in return. ]
In any case, I hope you are right. With the information I've been given, it seems that humoring the higher forces here might do well to increase his chances of restoration, which I hope to bridge the gap, until then.
no subject
Perhaps not in severity, but a situation like this is one in which a person may benefit from the faith of a friend. [Stealing words right from Chizuru's mouth and putting a more elegant spin on it, wow... The concept is foreign to Kaoru on a personal, emotive level, but enough time watching others means that the same concern can be mimicked quite well.
That topic isn't lingered on for long, though. Especially not with talk of CERES at hand.]
I would say that it isn't best to trust that the higher forces here will act in your benefit, either. As time has passed, they've begun to seem less and less reliable... [A kind way of saying "don't get your hopes up", basically.
BUT THAT'S DOUR, so Kaoru decides to shift topic gears a little with a small nod of apology and a:] Please excuse me for saying so; no one needs to hear such a grim thing so soon after arrival, true as it may be. Ah— [And then Kaoru's free hand drops, this time resting against the side of the box.]
Speaking of that... Since apartments can be so empty when a person first moves in, I thought that I might get you something to make it seem a little less barren. I hope that you'll accept it.
no subject
Faith isn't something to benefit from. He'd had faith in Jack, in the idea he could do something good, and finally, that he would at least be able to save his brother from lifelong misery.
It always sounds so comely, though, doesn't it? ]
Ah, that's quite thoughtful of you. I'd be honored.
[ Tilting his head to observe the box, he lifts his hand from the other's, so that he may gesture toward it. ]
May I?
no subject
[Kaoru lifts the box up by its sides, dainty and careful, before holding it out and over so that Vincent can take it.]
I apologize; it's a little impersonal, since I don't know what your preferences are. Even so... A kitchen without tea seems to me like a space that one would not wish to spend much time in at all.
[Something something, touch of home, blah, basically. Kaoru doesn't know much about that either, but a tea set is one of the only personal items that has snuck its way into an otherwise very barren apartment, even if it isn't used very frequently.
As for the box itself, it's made of a very nice lacquered wood that opens after a latch in the front is undone. Inside is a small tea set, though it likely differs slightly from what Vincent is used to, since Kaoru has apparently decided to make good on that "I'll teach you something from my homeland" remark from earlier. There's also a very small paper bag that's been folded over and tucked inside one of the cups. By scent, it's primarily a green tea of some description - a lighter sort, maybe, or something mixed with a white tea since there's less bitterness present.]
no subject
Apologies are hardly necessary, Miss Nagumo. I had been content with your company alone; a gift is very generous of you.
[ Carefully, he places it on his lap to open, and once he identifies the contents inside, his features soften. Tracing over the handle of the pot, he regards its detail with wonder - and once he spots the bag, he'll pick it up so that he might softly inhale its scent. ]
Sets like these are rare, where I come from, and yet, its color very much reminds me of home. [ Nightrays and their blues... ] It's quite perfect, actually.
no subject
I'm glad, in that case. To be without even a single reminder of home... I couldn't imagine it. [Couldn't care less, maybe. Chizuru is more than enough of a reminder... But with that said, Kaoru gestures toward the bag with measured gentleness.]
I hope that the tea is also suitable. You seemed to me a person who wouldn't favor a bitter drink, or something too floral... I tried to temper the lightest green tea that I had with dried cherries from a white tea.
no subject
Humming just so, he nods. ]
Ah, so that's what it is. I can't say that I've tried a blend of that variety before, but it smells pleasant, undoubtedly.
[ Replacing the box's contents, he closes it with a fond pat to its lid. ]
Your instincts are impressively astute, miss. Thank you.
no subject
[Implying that Kaoru is very much not one of those people which, basically. Mostly because Chizuru had not yet arrived when Kaoru had, and the thought of a world where she had died on her own had been something incomprehensible.
At the compliment, on the other hand, there's a fleeting smile.]
I've been told so before. [In less kind terms, but hey! The sentiment is still there...!] You're very welcome. If it wouldn't be much trouble, I could prepare a pot for you tonight? The steeping time is very fickle, so if it isn't taken care of, it might become bitter... I could show you how long to wait.
no subject
Home was a complicated place, to begin. [ Leaning in just a bit closer, until their shoulders just barely touch. ] I was thinking that you're right; reminders of our personal history are important things, especially so.
[ His mismatched eyes fall on Kaoru's hands, as though to ask permission, as he slips a palm under his. ]
And I would be delighted to learn yours. In exchange for your lovely tea, I hope you'll allow me to treat you to dinner?
no subject
If it wouldn't be too much trouble for you, I would be equally delighted to accept. [Leaning in a little, too, but stopping just shy of putting any actual pressure against Vincent's arm. The soft shyness is replaced with an understated amusement, and Kaoru's eyes flick back up. They seem to linger for a second longer on his right eye than his left.]
...Though I'm afraid my personal history isn't of great intrigue. Home is only complicated by virtue of being in a warring state. [Which Kaoru has no interest in, honestly.] I hope that you won't mind if I learn a little more of yours?
no subject
Wonderful. I would be happy to share with you, Miss Nagumo, but don't you worry. Tea is a good way to begin, and one that I'd be entirely content with, until you feel inclined to further impart yourself.
no subject
[The small smile present grows a little warmer, and Kaoru's free hand covers it briefly before gesturing outward.]
Shall we, then? I wouldn't wish to keep you waiting outside at this hour. It's been getting chilly at night lately, hasn't it? [and then they get snowdomed, wow, BUT FOR NOW it's just an unpleasant irritant.]
no subject
Has it? I suppose I'm rather used to it.
[ With Pandoraland seemingly in a state of snowpocalypse for a good portion of the year, he's likely even thinking at that moment, Hey, at least it isn't snowing....... ha.
He briefly slips away to pick up the boxed tea set, and carefully tuck it under his arm, once up on his feet. One freed, so that he may offer an aiding hand to Kaoru. ]
Of course, you're welcome to my coat, if you find yourself cold.
no subject
[Said with a curious lilt, because Kaoru does not come from the snowmaggedon. Tosa is by the sea, so ocean breezes are about as cool as it gets most of the year...
But when the hand is offered, Kaoru will take it with a grateful nod. Even after standing, Kaoru's own hand lingers, touch soft and light.]
Thank you for the offer. The walk from place to place here is usually not so cold that I find myself troubled, but I'll rely on you if that changes. [A brief pause; Kaoru's gaze rises to the sky. No clouds, no snow - not bad.]
no subject
[ To Kaoru's thanks, he gives a modest nod. Still hand in hand, Vincent carefully leads them forward, around the bench. ]
Mm, speaking of, I'm still unfamiliar with the area. I think we'd have better luck sharing a suitable dinner, if I leave the choice of location up to you. I hope you don't mind.
no subject
There's a cafe by my apartment that's open well into the evening. Their fare is light, though; I hope that isn't an issue? Soups and sandwiches seem to be their staple. [If there isn't any protest from Vincent, Kaoru will gently take the lead, setting off down the sidewalk. And for more ultimate smalltalk, back on the topic of weather:]
Ah, is that so? I'm a little jealous... I live too far south for there to be much snow. By the ocean, as well - so the seasons change very prettily, but it rarely gets cold enough for more than a light dusting that only lasts until sunrise. The winters in the north always seemed much more interesting with all of the frost and ice that they got. My sister lives in a place like that, and visiting was pleasant.
no subject
Seemingly considering the idea, he nods with an anticipating hum. ]
Not at all, especially with convenience of location considered.
[ And just like that, they seem to be walking whilst holding hands, in public. Scandalous. At least one of them is wearing gloves, and also happens to not give a shit, beyond presentation... but this place seems incredibly lax, all considered. Still, it all isn't without some amusement. ]
I think that sounds breathtaking, personally - your home. I suppose we all desire that which we do not have, hm? [ A passing chuckle. ] Though, I can't deny that the snow is beautiful.
no subject
I must admit, the location is why I visit the place so frequently. Though it does have a pleasant atmosphere... It's nothing at all like the tea houses from home. [Which are so stiffly formal that Kaoru feels even more pressured to present well than usual. The downfalls of being a member of high society...
That said, make that two people who don't give a shit, even though Kaoru at least has the mindfulness to make it seem more like guidance - a little less personal, even though they hardly get a second glance just holding hands. Old mannerisms die hard, nevertheless. Propriety!!]
I suppose... In the end, snow would likely lose its charm to a degree if I were to spend much time surrounded by it, in the same way that the ocean is just a part of everyday scenery to me now. [There's a thoughtful pause and then, with a smile:] Not to say that it isn't beautiful, of course; it's my favorite part of Tosa. When the ports are empty and no one is around, the beaches are something to admire.
no subject
In truth, I've only experienced such things through paintings. My recollections of the ocean are bustling with energy; waves roaring, and families spotting its shores to admire it.
[ As impersonal as Kaoru may try to be, he's intimate enough for the both of them. The way he maintains pace, so that his arm may comfortably rest against the other's, and his almost feline-like way of watching the other move and speak. ]
I am familiar with the significance of tea and its practices, at least, though I'm unsure how tea rooms might compare to a house.
