[ she felt it polite to explain, after all. unfortunately, she doesn't see much wrong with her explanation so she's unaware of how startling this is for larry. it is good that they move on from that topic because if hawke had to describe what happened in even more detail, there might not be any stomach for having dinner.

she'll take the candy bag and flowers, taking a moment to sniff the flowers (which smell fantastic) and then looking inside the bag. she'll look up as he explains before fishing a hand in, pulling out a yellow one that reads "sweet pea". oh, that's so cute... she actually feels kind of guilty for the level of thought he put into this whole thing compared to her "just show up" mentality. ]

Maker, these are adorable. I haven't anything for you, my apologies but this really is a sweet thought.

[ look! it's going well! at least, on hawke's end it's going well. he's exceeding expectations for her already. she'll look towards the restaurant and then back to larry. ]

Should we sit?

[Fortunately, indeed! Larry would much rather discuss date gifts than the details of dudes' injuries that got them sent to the hospital, or...something like that.

Despite his initial reservations about how this might go based on his first few minutes spent with Hawke, her positive reaction to the gifts give him a much-needed boost of confidence. After meeting Hawke, he was immediately worried that these sort of gifts would be her thing, but they seem to be going over well! Thanks to that, he's able to get back in his date-mode stride.

This time, he smiles genuinely. He even grins a little bit.]

No no, you don't gotta apologize for that. It's kinda tradition for guys to be the gift-givers on dates where I'm from. Your company alone makes me happy!

[He's being truthful there, if not being a little over the top on purpose as well. But that's just how he rolls on dates.

Ohhh right. He laughs, then nods and offers for Hawke to go in front of them back to the table Larry had picked out.]

Yeah, that might be a good idea. I guess this place has really good hotdogs? Maybe we can grab some of those.

[ they're quaint, kitschy gifts that appeal to hawke because she's never really seen anything like them! hawke is amused very easily, really and the candy hearts do the trick. she pops a candy heart into her mouth, sucking on the thing as she listens to him and gives a nod. that's kind of standard back home for her too, the men doing the courting more than the women and the less pressure put on her the better!

she bites down onto the heart and eats it as they start towards their table, not wanting to reply with the candy still in her mouth. it's tasty, if a bit chalky. she hasn't had anything like it before. ]

I've never had a hot dog. It's ah... [ gesturing to one of the posters on the wall with a hot dog on it ] That thing, right? Sausage link in a piece of bread?

[ when they get to their booth, she'll slide in on one side and place the flowers and bag at the end, waiting for larry to sit down too. she'll grab a menu after to open it, looking through what's offered. ]

What do you suggest? I imagine you're much more familiar with this sort of thing.
failures: (✎ whoa!)

[personal profile] failures 2015-07-30 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
[Larry nearly falls into his seat when Hawke admits to never having had a hotdog before.]

H-Huh?? You've seriously never had one?!

[He's not exactly asking that in a "THIS IS A GRAVE OFFENSE" sort of way, but it's certain that he's been really taken off guard. However, he has to once again remind himself that not everyone is from his world or time.

Still, with this knowledge in mind, his suggestion is pretty much obvious!

He leans forward a little so he can view the menu with Hawke and point out the hotdog area.]

You definitely gotta try one then. And look, they've got a bunch of different ones! I'd say maybe try the classic one first though. Chili Dogs are a big step from those.

[ ah, that reaction...! yeah, hawke's getting pretty used to this so in reply she just raises an eyebrow and laughs. ]

I'm also quite new to the whole "electricity" thing too, if that helps put it into perspective.

[ but she's receptive enough when he leans over and looks at the menu to where he's pointing. this could be going much, much worse but right now hawke sees larry in the same way others see dumb dogs. she's not going to kick a very useless puppy, no. ]

What's the difference? It just looks as if one has red dressing on it while the other is... meat and cheese? [ she reads the description, eyes narrowing. ] This... cat-chup, is it?
failures: (✎ it's all good!)

[personal profile] failures 2015-08-05 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
[Hawke that is literally the most accurate way to view Larry...

Also holy crap that electricity comment. It's extremely hard to not make a huge deal out of that. He feels like he kind of has to since she just one-upped her lack of hotdog awareness.]

Whoa...I seriously can't even imagine not having electricity! This place has gotta be super crazy for you, then! Man, and here I thought all the tech was confusing for me.

[He briefly wonders if all those sword guys thought the same thing of electricity, let alone tech and whatnot.

But anyway, back to the hotdogs! Larry is more than happy to explain the differences!]

They have totally different tastes. Ketchup's like...smushed up tomatoes that you put on hotdogs, fries, burgers, you name it. You see it paired up with mustard on hotdogs a lot- it's that yellow stuff. And then chili's a spicy blend of meat sauce and cheese! Some places even put sour cream on their Chili Dogs for a touch of cool creamy goodness.

Basically, it all boils down to what you like. And since you've never had any of 'em, it doesn't hurt to start with the basics!

[This is clearly the most exciting date subject ever.]

[ hell yeah, points for hawke then! but right, at his reaction she's just going to shrug and look around at the very flashy restaurant. ]

It was startling at first but then I realized it's just different ways to get around. Lightbulbs and candles still do the same thing -- provide light. Pens and quills, letters and cerevices, trains and horses. All the same thing, just in different ways. The only choice is to adapt.

[ but hot dogs are a totally much more interesting topic here so she nods along at his explanation of them. both of those options sound really good and she bites her lip as she looks down at the menu again, conflicted. how do you choose??

... ah! she looks up at him and grins. ]

How about both? Then I get to try everything and don't have to worry if I liked one more than the other. We can share if, if it's too much food.

[See...Larry has a hard time dealing with how easily Hawke's taken to the modern world! Like...dang, how can you be that chill about it? He looks hella impressed.]

You make it all sound super simple when in reality I'd have such a hard time without the more modern stuff! But you're here just pushing through and adapting! That's really amazing, Hawke.

[He may sound like he's sugar-coating, but his expression is pretty genuine. He feels a little bad for saying the things Hawke's familiar with aren't modern, but...it just kind of comes out naturally for him.

...BUT YES THE HOTDOGS. And dang, Hawke's going for the often-overlooked third option! Larry's down for this.]

I like how you think! Both is good! I'm not gonna lie, I'm curious to see which one you end up liking more.

[ it's the protagonist in her most likely. run into unfamiliar and possibly dangerous situation? punch it in the face! metaphorically, of course.

still, he's genuine enough about it and she's... oddly flattered! people don't compliment hawke nearly as much as she compliments herself. ]

Well, thanks.

[ she can't even bring herself to snark at it, just feeling pleased to be ... admired?? yes. back to the hot dogs though -- she's always one for finding the loophole so this works. ]

I can't say I'm not curious myself with how much you've talked them up. I'll flag down a waiter then.

[ and she does. this is one thing she's learned how to do, considering she works as a waitress herself. when the waiter comes by, she'll politely order her two hot dogs along with a pitcher of iced tea! then she looks to larry for him to order too. ]

[Larry's more than happy to dish out compliments when they're due, heh.

Larry orders two of the same to match Hawke, though he asks for some extra condiments on the side for her to try out if she ends up feeling extra adventerous.

Once the waitress heads off with their order, Larry turns his attention back to Hawke.]

Y'know, I really wish you could try a Samurai Dog or Blue Dog. That would've been an awesome intro to hot dogs too. I actually had a couple stints selling 'em back home- man, those things sold like hotcakes!

[Larry can honestly say he never expected his short time as a hot dog vendor to come up in a conversation, let alone a date conversation. And yet, here we are.]
