[ ah, yes, he is a giant do-gooder, with that forced response to her awkward behaviour. it's funny, actually, how that helps her relax--if only because she knows the type of person she's dealing with.

but, milla nods, both to the question of if she likes them and whether she'd like to eat, as she opens the basket and takes out a sandwich, gently putting the flowers to the side. ]

I should warn you, I've never gone on one of these before.

[ as if that wasn't obvious. ]

[ more laughter coming from this guy, and he takes out a sandwich of his own. he doesn't take a bite yet, and would rather let milla do the eating first. he's more comfortable now for some reason, but he isn't about to go pretending everything's happy and gleeful now and start eating.

that'd be awkward as hell, but. he's ready for the picnic, at least. and it's when he grabs his own food that he responds with arched brows: ]

Don't worry about it. I'm the same.

Never had time back at home because of school, and my brother.

... You haven't? I thought you would've, considering the flowers, the... everything.

[ the manners, the friendliness. he's way better at navigating this situation than she is, which makes her feel lost and comfortable at the same time.

a pause, as she considers something. ]

Though I guess the more surprising thing is how normal those reasons sound. [ everyone here is so... odd, weird, something. not that she's exempt, but she would've sooner expected "yeah, there's like an apocalypse/i have to unite japan/i'm a sentient sword so i haven't had time for that, y'know?" than school... and brother.

is that weirdly refreshing? hm, maybe. though the mention of family does make her think of her own sister, so-- ] What was wrong with your brother?

[ and she'll just take a bite of her sandwich as she awaits his response. this isn't so hard, she thinks, this isn't... so... hard?? ]

[bropane]

[ he lets out a chortle, ] Just because I haven't gone dating much doesn't mean I can't be a gentleman.

[ ah... but he doesn't mean to make it seem like she's wrong, or anything. but, too bad. he's already said it. and he doesn't realise that maybe his wording could have been better.

as for milla's other question— ] My brother- well, he's a bit of a troublemaker. I gotta be around for him all the time, you know?

[ to which he heaves a heavy sigh. ]

Well, I used to. I can't do that anymore.

[souperb]

[ gentleman... right. it's that combined with the rest of what he says that gets the wry smile on her face, before she shrugs it off. here's where she should comfort him, isn't it? that sigh sounded like a say-something-positive-thing. she has no idea.

oh, well. ]

You say that like you'll be here forever.

[ that's not quite a reassurance. it's not like her to just say "oh, don't worry, you'll be back home soon with all these people here!", but the way she says it implies that he'll be home. soon, sometime, someday. some year. some century? that's why she assumes he's speaking of this as if its in the past, anyway.

shifting on the blanket a bit, she continues: ]

A gentleman do-gooder and his troublemaker brother, huh. That makes sense.

[ the slightest hints of fondness, a small bit of jealousy, probably. ]

[ he still hasn't taken a bite off his sandwich, and he just stares at the piece of lettuce popping out of the bread before saying— ]

Hey, can I tell you a secret?

[ a beat, before he meets milla's eyes. ]

I know this is the first time we've met and all, but it might be easier to tell someone who barely knows me, you know?

[ that's a little sudden.

she does have a small moment of hesitation, brows furrowed as she wonders what he's getting at so quickly. milla keeps her gaze locked on his, and it's only because he seems so serious that she thinks about it.

and, ultimately-- ]

... As long as you don't expect me to know what to tell you.

[ she doesn't think she will, and she's not quite sure what it is he could possibly tell her on the first date, but. ]

What is it?

I guess it's something somebody should know first on a date, [ he laughs again.

he wonders why he's so willing to tell milla, especially when they just met. but he does have a point. if he wants this "date" to be a good one, he has to say something important about himself. ]

But I can't go back to my own world once all of this is done. [ he pauses again, looking to see what milla's reaction might be. would she get it, he wonders. ]

[ it doesn't take a genius to figure out what tadashi means by that, and milla could be an idiot and still figure it out, considering she's in that situation herself. how many possible scenarios could you have where someone can't return to their own world?

just one she can think of, and she tenses up immediately as a result.

yes, she gets it. gets it more than he knows. that's why, even it's inappropriate (it super is), she just. snorts. ]

You need to work on your pickup lines.

[ and then she wonders, because he'd been honest, and meeting someone like this was rare. it's easier to admit to someone who'd actually understand, right? ]

... But if that's what you consider something someone should know, then-- [ ... ] --You're not the only one.

[bropane]

It's- [ okay, that really makes him laugh. ] It's not a pickup line.

It's something I've just been thinking about for a while now since I got here, and that's been... what? Two months?

Sorry to hear that it's the same for you, though. [ not the turn out he was expecting in this conversation, but what can you do... ]

[ ... hah, she made him laugh, and it's on a topic like this? it's odd, but the mutual circumstances does make her relax a bit more.

enough to smile, at least. it's not a big bright one, it's a little wry--but most of it is genuine. ]

What was on your mind for two months? About it, I mean.

[bropane]

[ his answer is quick and simple: ]

My family, [ and a pause. then he realises that maybe he should clarify that he's not married. ] My brother, my aunt... but if worlds really were consumed, then- [ he rubs a palm at the back of his neck. this is really a depressing thing to talk about, he thinks. but at the same time, he's glad he's actually able to tell somebody how he's been doing these past two months. ] I guess I've lost them too. They didn't just lose me.

[ he looks at his sandwich, and grabs a napkin to wrap it around in. looks like he's lost his appetite for now. and his eyes meet milla's. ]

Can I ask you the same thing?

[ family... that makes sense. she'd thought about hers when her world was gone and she was left. most people would, especially someone like tadashi.

milla doesn't think she'll eat much after this either, but... she picks at the sandwich anyway, not quite expecting tadashi to turn the question back on her. maybe the more surprising thing is the fact that she's actually considering an answer. ]

I wouldn't dwell on what they tell you.

[ her words of reassurance first. she doesn't believe them, honestly, and considering those what-ifs was just asking for a headache.

she knows, she's been thinking about things that give her headaches for the past couple of months too. ]

... Though that's easier to say for me. [ milla doesn't need to dwell on what they say about her world, she already knows. the rest of what she's thought, however... it's Complicated, and she's not sure how to voice it. ] My thoughts... Were mostly whether or not I made the right choice.

[ and if the little girl she left behind was okay, but she knows that she is. ]

[ tadashi's seen way too many movies, played too many video games, read too many comic books—you get the point. basically, he somehow makes an assumption that milla chose to sacrifice herself for something or someone, and that's how she... well, died. and that's pretty heavy, so when he blinks, it's slow and serious. his mouth's opened up a little bit, both impressed and sympathetic towards what was milla's situation. ]

I bet you did.

[ that's all he says, as he knows he ask about it. he tries to lighten the mood now, as it's gotten a bit too dark— ]

And you think CERES is lying about the worlds thing?

she does lower her head a bit, a low chuckle escaping at that. yeah, do-gooder, she'll group him up with the rest of them. they know what to say and say it without shame, and that's just.

But yes, I do. When have shady corporations ever said anything you can believe? [ spirius, for example. ] I trust them about as far as I can throw their cushy offices.

[ and she's right about the shady corporations thing. after all, he wouldn't trust krei tech with anything now that his own mentor's said something about it. ]
