[But they're hair... Or, they're supposed to be.]

All the more reason never to switch! It's not bad to stick with what you know. [Chuckling, he starts to walk again, looking this-a-way and that-a-way.]

But-- um, some of the things are helpful! Like microwaves help you heat up food a lot faster!

[lionly]

Microwaves...? [He blinks.] Faster than the oven at the apartment does?

[BUT IT'S ALREADY SO FAST]

Yes! Like, in um... three minutes!

[ TECHNOLOGY... ]

[lionly]

We're talking about warming up food, Mary? [HE THINKS THAT SHE'S MADE A MISTAKE. Surely she must have.]

Yes! You just hit buttons and it pings when it's done!

[lionly]

I'm not really sure that's...

[...possible?? But Mary wouldn't lie.] So that's it. You just press a button, a few minutes go by, and then you can eat... A~ah. This world is really too strange for me to keep up with.

It was supposed to keep us safe from other people... so Mother said not to go outside.

[Elza's expression sobers, his eyebrows drawing together in a concern.] Were there people after you...?

... They were hunting a monster. And I wasn't careful enough.

[lionly]

A monster? [...] But what does that have to do with you?

[immobileyes]

[ There's a very long silence, before she points to herself and bows her head. ]

They meant us.

[lionly]

[Silence from Elza, for a long moment. Perhaps this is why she doesn't smell quite like a huma, or why her hair moves? And why that one time that thing froze up after she looked at it? But it doesn't matter, when it really comes down to it.] How foolish. They had no sense at all, if they thought you and your mother were like that.

[immobileyes]

It's... it's true, though. [ And Mary mutters this, shaking her head. ] I'm not a princess, or even human enough-- I'm a monster, and that's why I should have known that people would hate us. I-I'm sorry for not saying anything--

[lionly]

... [Elza slowly releases her, moving to step around in front of her. And, mall or not, he'll lower to a knee in front of her and move to gather her hands between both of his. He squeezes her hands gently.]

To me, I think that you make a wonderful princess. You don't need to be huma, you don't need to be anything or anyone but yourself.

[immobileyes]

Elza...

I believe I should be saying that to you. You're a wonderfully kind girl, Mary.

[He squeezes her hand... and then he moves to stand once more, looking down at her with a gentle look.] In comparison, I'm not that nice at all, you know?

[immobileyes]

[ In response, she doesn't look convinced at all. ]

I think you're the nicest.

[lionly]

Are we about to get into an argument over who's the nicest?

[Elza chuckles and teases, giving her a smile.]

[immobileyes]

[ That makes her smile in response, shaking her head. ]

That'd just be silly.
