[ It was hard enough, waiting for the water level to go down enough so that Mary could return to where her apartment was (had been) without risk of drowning. Seto's hoodie, the jacket Hiro had given her... they were the only things she'd been able to find at the time, but now she can search for anything remaining from their apartment.

So feel free to come across a tiny teenager over the afore-mentioned days, getting drizzled on and trying to pry up pieces of the smaller rubble - and HNNNNNGHing at the bigger pieces of debris that she can't budge at all - as she hunts about. The stuffed animal she'd received from Lily is gone, the headband from Kaoru and Shiho has been twisted and bent beyond repair when she miraculously finds that... the dried flowers, from the bouquet Elza had given her... no sign of them. All of her tea...

Mary almost wants to cry, but not yet. She just keeps looking.

And don't be alarmed if she seems worn-out when you see her. It's not some weird elemental effect, she's just terrible at stamina. ]

If that's the case, then I need to find those books even more now!!

[ Her head lowers, as though Zara's hand is an additional weight, adding to the burden that seems to be weighing her shoulders down. This... really is a different thing from leaving home, so long ago. ]

I-I know... I shouldn't give up trying to find them.

[ He'll find a shattered tea saucer with bits of its blue floral design, if he looks closely enough. And Mary... blinks. ]

... You styled yourself to look scary?

[as soon as mary's done, flynn drops the debris about as unceremoniously as possible. he sighs lightly. doing that with one hand turned out a bit more difficult than expecte--

flynn blinks at the sudden worried outburst, sparing a quick glance down at the arm before giving mary a warm smile.]

Don't worry. It isn't a serious injury. [because broken arms aren't serious... yeah... let's just change the subject here.] Did you manage to find something?

[As if he'd think that.... but after working in silence for some time, moving slabs of debris away, Sousei frowns slightly.]

[he repeats those things back—it seems like a strange combination of items, but he's not here to judge. it obviously has meaning to her. so he nods his head and offers a small smile.]

Got it. I'll start looking over there, in case things got really moved around. It's... kinda hard to tell where things were to start, anyway.

[just wATCH NOW THEY'RE BOTH GONNA GET SICK]

[no but mary's so cute though... Her hair looks like a bush, but it's like an adorable bush. He blushes just a tad, which is because he's embarrassed!!! and also, he doesn't even deserve concern, but that's a huge ocean of angst that Julian thankfully doesn't delve into at this moment.]

I'll try not to. I'm sure we'll both be okay. [Famous Last Words... but now it's time to dig for Mary's buried treasures!!] Remember to call out whenever you need a break.

ANYWAY, TIME TO DIG IN THE RUBBLE.]

I'm Mary. [ See, there, she'll introduce herself. She hadn't gone near the school if she could help it, much too nervous about ever being a student there, and too comfortable with her lessons with Sousei to want to change that. But maybe on the streets... ]

One of my books...

[ A fairy tale collection, actually, and she holds it up in case he wants to take a peek at it. Or maybe so she can hide behind it, made shy by a helpful stranger, it's hard to say. ]

... But you should still be careful with your arm.

[immobileyes]

I know what you mean. I can't even tell where the front was, or my room, or... anything. [ She frowns, rubbing a smudge of dust or dirt off of her nose. ] It's just all one big mess.

You can try to make me laugh later, then.

[ Which is a minor concession, but she's got some stuff to unearth. ]

[ There's a pause that exists between his question and Mary's answer, which ought to be a simple 'yes' or 'no'... and yet, there she is, frowning down at the... rubble-strewn ground. ]

... It doesn't look like a home anymore, does it?

[immobileyes]

Yeah!

[ And Mary does eventually succeed, after some heaving of a bit of a chunky block (that may require Oz's assistance). It's completely soaked through, but the cover appears to be two statuesque blobs surrounded by even more multicolored blobs. Flowers, maybe. ]

... Why are you helping me, anyway?

[ Yes. Yes, of course she has to ask, why would you imagine otherwise--

She is also asking this from a nice safe distance of fifty feet. ]

I'll be okay!

[ read: She's going to remember she's exhausted in about two minutes and probably slump over across a chunk of cement to regain her stamina without actually saying anything. ]

[OZ WILL ASSIST IF NEED BE!! He's here to help!!

But oh, that cover sure is looking a little blobby... Is it meant to be like that? Is it ink running?? He just can't tell.]

Oh—! Is that one of them?

[Sayo's quiet for a moment. Even now, being thanked by people outside of the army is still... odd to him.]

... It's no problem. I just want to do something.

Yeah... [ JUDGING FROM THE WAY SHE'S HUGGING IT TO HER CHEST. ] The picture's all messed up, but I'm glad it didn't fall apart...
